Pawn Stars on History Channel (1 Viewer)

DCThunder

Footballguy
This show is about a Las Vegas pawn shop and the first episode was last night at 10 PM EDT. Anybody see it?

It's got some of the same formula of American Choppers, with the Old Man who started the business and is now kind of a joke, the Son who now runs the place, and some other Sons/employees who are cut-ups and clowns. But the real funny stuff are the customers who bring in all kinds of junk to pawn and their inflated opinions of what it's worth. However, I did learn some things about a Hotchkiss gun and a cavalry sabre I never knew.

So all in all, this show has some potential.

The guy with the Indian totem was hilarious. Also the dude with the cash register.

Pawn shop guy:How much do you want?

Client: 300 Dollars

Old pawn shop guy: American money? :)

Spent a lot of time in pawn shops for a small business I started some years ago...

I've seen both high drama and comedy while there (usually during the same event).

I'd say the potential for this reality show is great....

Why has the History Channel chosen to go down this road? Obviously the answer is that it pulls in more viewers, but they have to realize eventually they are going to alienate their base.

Caught about half of it last night. It's got potential.

The Vic Mackey looking dude, the old man, and the fat guy seem like an entertaining trio.

Sounds like it's upsetting to the History Channel Purists, but it seems like it'll be an informative show as well (I learned how to spot a knock-off antique sword last night).

If not, I guess the purists skip over this and Ice Road Truckers each week.

I liked the guy with the replica suit of armor. Wanted $2,500 for it and everyone looked at him like he was nuts.

The rolex that was worth around 10K, and the pawn shop only had 2K in it....geez, sounds like a very lucrative profession. They sold it for 5K, nice little 3K profit.

I used to do the advertising for a fairly big pawn shop. This show sounds pretty close to my guy's situation -- young fella whose father was big in the business and set him up to both teach him and let him make his own mistakes. The son did okay for himself despite being mostly nuts, but the customers were the best. There was never any in-between. They either wanted absolutely nothing for a treasure or they wanted a world for horse####. Some of the exchanges were awesome. As for profit, most of these guys don't want to buy anything. They want to loan the money out and then have the guy just keeping the minimum payment to keep whatever it is from hitting the sales floor. There were several cases of people pawning a $1K laptop for a $300 loan, then making $60 payments every month for more than a year.Just insane.

Yep, the loans are where the big $$$ is for the owners....They provide a service to financially-challenged people. Not saying that's a wrong thing.

And MonsterQuest.And Ax Men.

And Expedition Africa.

And every stupid friggin' UFO show they incessantly replay.

Pretty soon, the History Channel will go the way of MTV...where their name has nothing to do with their product anymore.

Oh, I've never seen any of those, but they don't sound very good (I'm not a huge fan of Ice Road Truckers either).I pretty much just watch Modern Marvels on the channel. I think this Pawn Stars thing will be pretty good though.

Loved the first two episodes here... echo the comments about this being a combination of Orange County Choppers and Antiques Roadshow. And I really enjoyed Expedition Africa, BTW.

My brother has been managing a pawn shop for about the last 12 years. I have been saying for years that there is a reality show in the making at his shop. I'll have to check this show out.

Got hooked on this yesterday. I am a reality ho though. Very interesting to watch the business conducted.

The old man and the grandson make the show. I think they are both freakin' hilarious.

The son running the shop is just so-so, except for the interactions with folks like the guy with the suit of armor and the totem.

The only thing with the grandson... and it's really starting to irk the heck out of me... is he keeps on interjecting "man" every few words every time he opens his mouth. "How much do you want for it, man?" "I gotta tell ya, man, my old man would kill me, man." And the way he says it isn't exactly west coast or east coast. More Jamaican than anything... almost like, "mon", but with a very brief pronunciation of the vowel.

Couldn't the guy with the 3 Dali's put the proofs for sale/auction online and got much closer to retail price?

Last night was the 1st time I have watched this, I thought it was pretty good. Nice Sunday night filler until Football starts.....

A reality show about some of the stars in adult porn would be a huge hit. Can you imagine the messed up lives these people lead? Just do not show the sex or nudity but just the caring for their kids and home life in general.

Wife and I watched this yesterday. I found it very interesting and informative. And despite what many of you say, there is plenty of historical information presented on this show, hence it being on the History Channel.

Caught the latest two episodes of this and I'm hooked.

Those guys must make really good money, aside from whatever TV income they are getting. I found it interesting that so many folks would come in with an item and accept way below their initial asking price. Then you realize they are in Vegas, and these folks probably have some kind of gambling issue to deal with and don't have time to sell on eBay or whatever.

Well that's haggling 101. Start off with a high offer. Pawn shop guy usually comes back with a lowball offer. Then the seller counters with something somewhere in the middle or whines about the lowball offer, at which point the pawn shop guy accepts or counters again.

Caught the show for the 1st time today, didn't think I was going to like it, but it was actually pretty entertaining.

I'm growing tired of it already. I liked it a t first, but the "I'm not an expert in the field so I'm gonna call a buddy to have a look" thing is getting old. I understand that they have the unusual items on the TV show, like the calf roping machine, but come on.

I think they do this because of the History Channel. I bet if it wasn't for that they would never bothering calling someone else unless it was an item they really believed they could sell.

I'd like to see some more more selling and pawning, not just them buying stuff.

Chumlee is gonna be the big star from this show, just like Mikey from American Choppers.

I also wanna see some more of Peaches, she's kinda hawt.

Why would they not call in an expert if they have the means to do so ? Obviously they are not going to bring someone in if they don't think they can make some $$$$$.

For grins, we drove over this pawn shop (its on the strip between the stratosphere and downtown) on a Monday morning before we departed Vegas. Some dude in a Ford Fusion pulled into the smallish parking lot in front of us, and took forever to get in his spot (very tight spots). We park and walk in, and sure enough its Chumlee getting out of the Ford Fusion. We said hi and then popped in for a bit. Its a really small store (seems to be much bigger on TV). The old man was smoking a cigarette outside when we left.

Because in real life (outside of the TV cameras) if they didn't know the value of something, they would simply try to lowball the seller. It makes no sense for the pawn shop to bring in an expert who will then tell them that the piece is worth 10x more the price that they were willing to buy it at, particularly when the seller doesn't have a clue to begin with (which I bet is at least 50% of the time). Bringing in the expert would probably only happen for a dispute on a really big ticket item.

Did you see any merchandise shown from the store still for sale? The old stack of Playboys?

Exactly.
