Mad Cow's Build a Killer Gaming Rig on a Budget Thread (4 Viewers)

Ok, so if I buy:

CYBERPOWERPC Gamer Xtreme VR GXiVR8060A5 Gaming PC (Intel i5-8400 2.8GHz, 8GB DDR4, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, 120GB SSD, 1TB HDD, WiFi & Win 10) Black

Dell - S2719DGF 27" LED QHD FreeSync Monitor - Black  (Says is includes "HDMI cable, SuperSpeed USB cable")

Should I be covered for this thing to work out of the box without having to run out to buy something else?

I looked at the speakers but they're been using headphones on the XBox and I'd prefer that if possible.

If I wanted to add another 8GB RAM stick, can you tell what type would fit?  How about this?...

Ballistix Sport LT 8GB Single DDR4 2400 MT/s (PC4-19200) DIMM 288-Pin - BLS8G4D240FSB (Gray)

Anything else?

If the kids aren't ####ting their pants in excitement I'm gonna be pissed.

Looks great.  If you really want to be a hero, then crack it open, fire it up and download the Epic launcher and install Fortnite ahead of time.

Sorry to keep doubling back to this.  Just saw this one and it looks like a very similar PC but with 16GB RAM and a few bucks less ($880), am I missing something?...

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/ibuypower-desktop-intel-core-i5-16gb-memory-nvidia-geforce-gtx-1060-1tb-hard-drive-120gb-solid-state-drive-gray-black/6289118.p?skuId=6289118

Aside from RAM difference, both have:

Processor - i5-8400 2.8GHz 6-Core

HDD - 1 TB

SDD - 120 GB

Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Included - Gaming Keyboard and 7-Color Gaming Mouse

Also saw this Dell AMD setup on there as well with AMD 2nd Generation Ryzen 7 - 2700X, 1TB HDD + 256 SSD, AMD Radeon RX 580 Graphics card (4GB), says keyboard but doesn't mention mouse.  It's $1,050 so ~ $160 more but includes 16GB RAM and double the SSD size.  Don't know about Intel / AMD and graphics cards difference though but guess this would work with Freesync on that monitor?

Tom's Hardware rates i5-8400 2.8GHz a 95.6 for gaming and 45.8 for applications and the AMD 2nd Generation Ryzen 7 - 2700X a 97.2 for gaming and 70 for applications.  No idea about the video cards and effect there though...

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1060-3GB-vs-AMD-RX-580/3646vs3923

Ugh, the more I look, the harder it is to choose.  What do you guys think between these three?

Go with the first one you linked.  The GPU will be better on that and you save cash.

The original one from Amazon or the one in that post at Best Buy?  Seems like GPU would be the same?   i5-8400 + NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB

Only difference seems to be 8GB or 16GB RAM?

Most recent with the 16 RAM. :)

After learning more after looking at these systems and components, maybe I'll just do this with the kids...

Might be fun, and there's a video guide!

Decisions, decisions...  :wall:

It's hard to imagine I'd ever need another computer beyond something top-end today.  I'm looking to spend about $2k on a killer machine and build everything from scratch.  I run a setup with two monitors, tons of browser tabs, video editing from time to time, usually have one or two game clients running.  Big things for me are obviously a killer graphics card (currently have a gtx 960), 2-3TB SSD for operating system and storage (probably starting with about 700/800 gigs with current games/files), and of course a godlike CPU.  I don't know what this NVMe thing is but I probably want that too.

Being strong enough and scalable for VR tech and 4K (if I ever upgrade my monitors- I've used the same ASUS gaming monitors ever since @theglorydays) is probably a good idea too.  Wouldn't mind some recommendations for an antivirus/cleanup program to keep things running smooth either.  Thanks brohans.
I'm off Friday, I'm thinking about having the parts overnighted and setting it up.  Where's the best place to compare/contrast the parts, buy them at a good price, and make sure they're all compatible with each other?

This is what I’m leaning toward so far.  Looks like I still need to pick out a cpu cooler.  Not sure how big of a problem the m.2 slot vs. 6gb sata thing would be either
2 things. 1) you need a little more power supply, I'm guessing.  @) You can get Windows OS 10 Pro way cheaper via a PM. Like 30$.

Nice 3000.00 comp though!

Was looking on Newegg and saw this one for same price but with Intel i5 and 16 GB RAM, think I may go with this unless you foresee any issues?  Would have been nice to get something that worked with the cheaper Freesync monitor I got but with a NVIDIA 1070 8GB and 16 GM RAM I think this should power right through Fortnite and any other games my kids decide to play.  Or do I not understand the GPU / monitor sync and screen tearing?

I so want to be done with this...

1070 is a BIG upgrade over the 1060 too

Think I'll cross my fingers and buy this thing.

And I thought the USS Flagg and Commodore 64C were expensive Christmas presents when I was a kid...
Well, it is really for 2 kids right?  So it is like 4 presents total, if that helps :)

Thanks (I think 😂).  Price isn’t much of a concern so much as the parts rating out well and being current.  I mean, I don’t want to be completely stupid here but I spent a lot of time comparing parts on userbenchmark.com, the hope here is that I’ll never have to buy pc components again (other than 4K, VR stuff, and peripherals in the future perhaps).

On the OS, it looks like I’ll be able to reuse my windows 7 professional product key to get it on the new bios.  Or at least it let me download/install win10 with no registration issues last night.  Thanks though.

Well, it’s done.  I ordered the parts on Wednesday and they should be arriving via UPS today.

Ive never built one before, so if you guys got any guides or whatever it’d be much appreciated.  Thanks

Gaming desktop's been a paperweight for a few months due to a motherboard (or processor, couldn't fully isolate) problem.  Been anxious to replace but money hasn't been there due to a Vegas trip and Christmas.  Now that's all past, so was going to pick up the i7-8700K processor and the Asus TUF Z390 Pro Gaming motherboard while I can get them at Micro Center on sale.  Processor is $70 cheaper then Amazon and when I combo the board I get another $30 off.  Any reason not to do this such as known upcoming sales or hardware releases?

My aunt is looking for advice for a gaming system for my nephew.  He currently has a Cyber Power system that is about 5 years old if that helps.  Budget is $1500.  She probably isn't going to build a system so this will have to be plug and play.  Appreciate any advice you guys can give.

This has a pretty good rundown on premade desktops versus building a PC.  https://www.windowscentral.com/pros-and-cons-pre-built-desktop-pcs

Basically premades are easier, come with tech support and warranties, while building a PC gives better performance for cost.  But $1,500 is plenty enough to get something that will play high end games on high settings, allow him to multitask etc.

How old is he?  I think the shark move is to buy the components and build it with/for him.  He'll be more personally vested in it and come away with a better system.  But I get that a lot of people don't want to fool with all that.

For premade PCs, that webpage leads here: https://www.windowscentral.com/best-desktop-pc

Looking at the specs on those XPS 8930's, he'll be set for years.  Can even support VR if that's something he wants to do down the road.  Both of these have ~3 terabytes of storage and operate off an SSD (really fast load times).  They both have quality graphics cards that can run high end games with good performance.  You can click through with just standard, included options, both have really good specs.

XPS Tower Special Edition: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-desktop-computers/xps-tower-special-edition/spd/xps-8930-se-desktop/ $1399

If she wants to go a little over budget on a desktop with a little bit better processor, and a little bit better graphics card, she can get this one:

New XPS Tower Special Edition: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/dell-desktop-computers/new-xps-tower-special-edition/spd/xps-8930-se-desktop/ $1699

Wikibuy extension found a code for an additional $50 off too.  Good luck

For gaming pc's I prefer an Intel i5 processor with NVIDIA card, in that price range a GTX 1060 or 1070 cards would be good.  I don't know much about the "gaming pc companies" like ibuypower and cyberpowerpc, but i'm pretty sure some other guys on here have bought from them and they've been ok.  These PC's don't come with monitors, so assuming you'll need one i'm trying to keep the PC price below $1000 so the total is below the limit.  A lot of these links are similar to ones posted previously in this thread.

If you want to stick with Dell, one of these guys would work, but they are over priced for what you get: https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/compare?ocs=ddcwblsk103h,ddcwblsk108ps

Off Amazon this one is pretty equivalent to the more expensive dell, but cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0757DVF4Z

From Best buy, this one similar to the one above with a larger SSD: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0757DVF4Z

From Newegg, this one is the most expensive, but the video card is a pretty big jump from the others: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227860&ignorebbr=1

Not sure on monitors, but i'm pretty sure if you read back the last page some guys have posted links to decent monitors.

Well, I received some good advice in this thread when I bought my last laptop - almost 9 years ago - so I figured I’d try again. Looking for a 17 inch laptop that will 90-95% be used for work and word processing, but in the other 5-10% I’ll want to play some potentially graphics heavy games, though I don’t need to run them at high end setting. The Total War games are the kind of thing I’m looking at.  Because I’ll be doing a ton of typing, keyboard (and overall) build quality are probably the most important things though. I’d be looking to have this for a long time, probably well after it’s usefulness a game machine has come and gone.

My budget is $2,000 or less, hoping for more like the $1500 range.

Would something like this Alienware (or this one) be a good choice?

I also had a Dell G3 (Link) recommended to me. I had some bad experiences back in the day with Dell though (I know they own Alienware now).

Any thoughts on those or other recommendations?

Just as a quick FYI, Dell bought Alienware years ago, and so Dell makes both of those.

This article has some good ideas for laptops with discrete gpu's.  Anandtech has been around for a decade or more and is pretty reliable.

Razer makes some nice laptops as well.

Need some advice.  My desktop is about 5 years old or so.  I've upgraded the power supply, video card and hard drive.  Recently I have been trying to play Far Cry 5 and everything is fine for about 10/15 mins and then it crashes.  The fans are going crazy the whole time I'm actually playing.  When I play in a window and reduce the window to about half my screen size it seems to last much longer, but this sucks.

Here are my specs:

Intel Core i7-3770 @ 3.40 GHz (3rd Gen, I think) Windows 8.1

16 GB RAM (not sure what kind)

AMD Radeon R9 200/HD 7900 Series

I GB Samsung EVO SSD + 2GB HD

So, 1st, what could be making the game crash and 2nd, should I replace the motherboard/processor and RAM or just start over with a new machine/build?

Edit: Going to throw up the @Mad Cow bat signal.

I would download GPU-Z and monitor GPU temps.  It could be overheating and causing it.

Anything I can do if it is overheating?  Or does that mean it's on it's way out?
It can be as simple as blowing it out of the dust or replacing a fan.  Or could be going out.
So I blew out the dust yesterday and played for quite a while last night.  Ran GPU-Z at the same time.  In the middle of playing these were the readings:

GPU Temp - 91C

Fan Speed - 99% (RPM 3163)

GPU Load - 99%

CPU Temp 72C

Ran fine like this for about 45 minutes and then crashed.

Sand was nice enough to react to this post. FTR, looking at prices...

Almost all the prices are now quite a bit higher on the main components than during the Nov/Dec sales period for Black Friday and Christmas.  Probably another 300$.

What's a good site to buy a pre-built/configure-your-own from nowadays? I remember newegg and Tom's but I think there's be some controversy with them in the five/six years since I've last been shopping for a pc, right?

I usually build my own from raw parts, but I'm so lost on specs I might want to just buy a premade so that everything works. Not even sure what I need... I just run Excel and Photoshop (the home desktop versions, not the online ones), and some upload/downloading but nothing too major. I know I want an SSD for the OS but I'll probably bring some hard drives over from my existing machine. 16GB RAM, and support for two monitors. I'd love to not have to spend over $1k. Ideally if there was something in the 6-800 range I'd be a happy camper. Just need the desktop system, not any monitors.

I don't need the bleeding edge latest/greatest. Something solid that can go online, browse the internet quickly, have photoshop open at the same time and not slow to a crawl is basically it. Most of the day it's just idling running a few online service monitors and nothing heavy.
@Mad Cow and @Zasada can give you a pick list for a build it yourself, awesome pc at a great price. But they may be busy! I don’t think either have done a scratch build in a couple years.

I’m leaning toward getting this one. Alienware in that weight range.
With a sale, I configured one of these with an i7, RTX 2060 (6GB), 16 GB RAM, and two hard drives - 256 GB SSD and a 1TB regular HD, for $1699. I know that’s not a ton of space on the SSD, but I’m thinking for my relatively light gaming needs (I won’t have 20 games installed at any given time), it’s probably sufficient. The entire thing is overkill, really, but I’d like to have some nice hardware given that I buy one of these once a decade. Decent deal?

I feel like I've been on the fence for years but I finally broke-down and went to Micro Center over the weekend and bought all of the necessary parts to build a PC. I have little to no clue what I'm doing but am very experienced with LEGO stuff - I should be fine right?

In all seriousness if anyone knows of a good tutorial for a complete beginner I am all ears. I can list all the parts I bought if that would help. Seems like I want to start with the motherboard, get the CPU and the RAM on there, then mount it to the case and off we go.
