There’s a doc on Hulu called “The Wrecking Crew”.  It came out in 2008.

It’s not all that great as far as docs go but the subject matter is fascinating.

Basically there was a loose-knit group of 10-30 session/studio musicians in L.A. during the 1960s that played on just about every great song from that era.

I’d heard of many of the musicians before and had some idea of what they did but the sheer volume of their work is incomprehensible.
I hadn't known until he passed away that Glen Campbell was part of The Wrecking Crew.

3 episodes in.  A+ so far.  Good acting, fun with a bit of an undertone of gravity.
Warrior Nun definitely kept my attention, though the writer for the final episode deserves a good kick in the nuts.

They sure did go out of their way to put her in as many leg-tastic outfits as possible, a strategy I fully approved of.

Is there anything new worth watching? Looking for a good action/drama series, but feel like I'm running out of options.

We wrapped up s2 of Hanna.

I felt it kind of dragged getting to where it needed to go (away from the training ground) but was still kind of compelling enough. But then the writing really let it down once it did get there. Too much goofy mixed in with what could have been a fun ride for me.

I also am disappointed in how far it lost the fairy tale aspect of the movie, something that made the movie transcend (along with great visuals and good action)

I'm with you.  Really disappointed Fargo didn't finish up production prior to the pandemic :kicksrock:

Contemplating doing my first rewatch of Mad Men.

haven't watched it yet but have heard good things about Homecoming on prime video https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B07JPJNNM8/ref=atv_dp_season_select_s1?tag=justwatch09-20

Really liked The Sinner (Netflix) especially season 1.

I haven't seen the show, but I've read the book. It's a good read, goes quick. Not having seen the show I'm not sure if/where the book goes beyond/doesn't cover the same ground.

Did anyone bring up Ramy yet? Interesting semi-comedic look at being a Muslim in the U.S. Not a must see, but if you're running out of stuff to see...

About 5 episodes into Cursed on Netflix. The little I knew of it was a description that it was a ‘retelling of the Arthurian saga from a female (or Lady of the Lake) perspective‘. And the reviews I had read were lukewarm at best.

I have been pleasantly surprised. It’s not great, per se, but it has held our attention and IMO has been much better than, for example, Letter to the King. It’s got a lot of fairly graphic violence and Merlin is played by the guy who played Floki in Vikings.

I was really into King Arthur and The Knights of the Round Table as a kid, read all that stuff multiple times, but I only recall pieces of it now. Cursed seems to have very little to do with those books, except very superficially (names, etc.). Then again, I’m not done with it. The show is vaguely reminiscent of a mashup of Letter to the King (or any medieval setting fantasy show, really) and Carnival Row (only because of the central role of the Fae), but done slightly better than both.

Just binged this recently and enjoyed it quite a bit. If you're into the Atlanta/Dave/Louie kind of vibe you'll probably like this one.

What was the last thing you watched that you liked?
Ozark was the probably the last thing I watched most recently. I tend to re-watch series, probably because I don't want to invest time into new shows that are probably not going to be very good.

Watched Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime recently also.

I thought the first episode was a train wreck.  Unintentional comedy everywhere - I was waiting for Monty Python quotes to pop out.  Does it get better?

We've been watching S1 of Unforgotten... BBC or masterpiece theater tv police cold case procedural from a couple years ago. Centers on 1 case over the 6 episodes. And while I don't see the overdone genre lending itself to exceptional tv at this point, it's done very well. Good acting and writing that tells the story well and creates some well done characters.

The doc is pretty so-so.  I think it was made by Tedesco’s son.  It’s a little all over the place.

I thought so. Seemed to take itself more seriously at least. Still some eye roll moments. Admittedly though, my standards may be lower than most when it comes to fantasy/sci-fi.

I didn’t make it through the first episode and I just binged Britannia to the point where Hurdy Gurdy Man is stuck in my head. (What a weird choice)

I thought the lead was terrible and then  the “battle” scene choreography clinched it. You know how you would fake  “fight” by holding your buddy and pretending to gut punch him and he would jump off the ground? Take that, add 50 people and film it overhead with a crappy drone and you’ve probably done a better job.

Anyway, I made it to the dock and bailed. Missing the boat seems an appropriate summary for this one.

Watched 1st 2 episodes of Absentia. This is in its 3rd season, had a premise that sounded interesting (abducted FBI agent missing 6 years and presumed dead is found alive), so figured it was worth a shot.

Wasn't impressed by most of  the acting. Main character constantly makes stupid decisions. Too frustrating for me to watch any more. Very disappointed as I really wanted it to be good. Somebody thought it was good enough to renew a couple seasons. Maybe it gets better. I wouldn't bet on it though.

I do not recommend.

i liked the first season.  agree the main character can be a little off-putting.

I’ll Be Gone in the Dark on HBO has been better than I expected. I find most true crime docs kind of worn out, but it’s a bit different by making Michelle McNamara (including what she went through in her personal life in the hunt for the Golden State Killer) a lot of the focus.

Somebody in here recommended Britannia, so I dived in.

It's dumb, but consistent and fun. Druidic mythology meets Romans. Makes me think of a Game of Thrones tribute meets the 100 meets The Fades. The production quality is decent and there's a surprising amount of gore plus a bit of nudity. Most of the actors are cast well (the governor from TWD is the head Roman) with the best writing and acting happening on the more comedic moments. It's not top tier, but I'd recommend.

ETA...I'm 5 or 6 into S1

I need to remember to stream this. Don't have HBO but have a password.  Thanks for the reminder.

I’m mostly through S2 (had to resort to Cinema on a fire stick since I guess season 2 was only released in UK). You pretty much exactly summed up my feelings on this as well). Also, S2, has a way better Donovan song as it’s theme, though I still find the soundtrack bizarre for a show set in 43 AD. Hopefully there’s a season three just so Mellow Yellow gets some airtime.

I think I'm combining Amazon and Netflix but anyway right now I'm considering:

  • I'll be Gone
  • Catastrophe
  • Patriot
  • Fear City
See other stuff here I'd love to watch but need to bring in something the wife would also enjoy.

JoJo Rabbit is great. Didn't get a chance to see Richard Jewell in theaters. Definitely want to see that one.

For those of us with AppleTv+, Tom Hanks new movie  Greyhound is available starting today.

The film is based on the 1955 novel The Good Shepherd by C. S. Forester, and also stars Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue. The plot follows a US Navy Commander on his first war-time assignment in command of a multi-national escort group defending a merchant ship convoy under attack by submarines in early-1942 during the Battle of the Atlantic, only months after the U.S. officially entered World War II.
Good trivia question for the group that i heard recently:
In Greyhound, Tom Hanks plays a Navy Captain.............name the OTHER 4 movies in which he played a Captain?

1 - Greyhound
2 - Capt Miller in Saving Private Ryan
3 - Capt Sully Sullenberger in the movie Sully
4 - ?
5 - ?

Norsemen Season 3 now out.  First two seasons were gut-busting funny.  This one is a prequel so we probably get some of the old favorite characters back.

(Meaning, of course, Frøya)

4 - Capt Richard Phillips [in Captain Phillips]
5 - Capt Jim Lovell [in Apollo 13]

He will soon play his 6th as the following movie is still due to be released:
News of the World, where he’ll play yet another captain, Jefferson Kyle Kidd, “a Texan travelling across the Wild West bringing the news of the world to local townspeople”.

For the 5th one my guess would either be Apollo 13 (most astronauts were armed forces pilots) or Green Mile (do prison guards have ranks?)

Edit: Got it! but I missed by a few minutes while I was typing.

x2 and I think it's excellent.  I like that it's much more than just a profile on the killer or how he got away with it (a la Ted Bundy's recent docu-series).  Her relationship with Patton is rather touching and he just seems like a cool guy.  Michelle was a brilliant brilliant writer.
