Cleveland Browns (7 Viewers)

.-------------------------------

Assuming Josh does get suspended.

For the sake of discussion lets say they have a plan in place and its something like this.

Their has already been at least 15 or so WRs drafted meaning that NFL rosters are overflowing with wideouts that they will either cut or trade away cheaply.

If a perrenial thousand yard WR like Stevie Johnson goes for a conditional 3rd next year then their are probably lots of 'serviceable' starting caliber WRs who are or will be available on the cheap ...
Ahem....

Dawg Pound Nation‏@DawgPoundNews24 mins

Hearing the #Browns have inquired about WR's Michael Crabtree and Roddy White and trade availability.
Good call.

Depends how you have your players ranked.

If you have two guys equal, sure, take the WR over the RB or LB
This is all I was saying Ghost. That there WERE great receivers on the board for some of those picks. And that is why I don't get it. It's almost kind of funny, so many were touting the top pick being a WR, it was our big need of the draft. Now some (most/all?) of these same folks are saying they are happy we didn't "reach" in the draft. To be honest, to me, it reeks of desperation trying to justify the picks.
Or maybe they didn't rank their players the same as you.
They aren't my rankings. They are the rankings of the posters in this thread. The same ones who are now "happy" the Browns didn't draft them.

Loved reading this about Bitonio...almost seems like they made some of the weaknesses up...

STRENGTHS Plays with vinegar and seeks to bury defenders -- nasty finisher who runs his feet on contact and consistently blocks defenders off the screen. Extremely tough and durable. Highly versatile -- can play any position on the line. Outstanding personal character and football character -- work ethic, leadership and responsibility are all exemplary. Produced the best 10-yard split (1.69 seconds) and 20-yard split (2.80) of any offensive lineman at the combine.

WEAKNESSES Tends to shoot his hands wide and needs to improve placement -- too grabby. Slips off blocks and could stand to play more under control. Operated heavily out of a 2-point stance and might need to get acclimated to playing with his hand in the dirt. Average knee bend in pass protection.

DRAFT PROJECTION Round 2

BOTTOM LINE An undersized college left tackle who projects best to the inside in the pros. Displays the tenacity, leg drive and mean streak that is highly coveted by OL coaches and could drive up his draft status. Could require some initial patience moving inside, yet possesses the skill set, intelligence and desire to successfully convert.

A twitter clearinghouse on the Browns picks:

----------------------------------------------------------

Jason La Canfora‏@JasonLaCanfora2 hrs

Browns pass on WRs. Taking best prospects regardless of position. Imagine they sign several UDFAs. Guys like Miles Austin still out there

FantasyGuru.com@Fantasy_Guru · 16h

Terrance West should be a hot WW pickup in like Week Nine when Ben Tate gets hurt.

Matt Williamson‏@WilliamsonNFL17 hrs

Even with Tate on board, RB was a need and West could see a lot of playing time considering Tate's injury history

Matt Williamson‏@WilliamsonNFL2h

We also need to remember: There are a lot of NFL Vets unemployed right now too. Roster building doesn't end today

KC Joyner@KCJoynerTFS · 2h

Desir to Browns - superb pick.

KC Joyner@KCJoynerTFS · May 8

Gilbert had five picks & 10 pass breakups (52 targets), 5.2 YPA, 6.8 VYPA in 2011. Can ballhawk & cover, but has tackling issues.

KC Joyner@KCJoynerTFS · May 8

Got to like that trade for Cleveland.

Louis Riddick‏@LRiddickESPN2 hrs

Desir & Gaines will fill out physically and should make big strides over the next 12 months. Small schools=small budgets=limited resources.

Louis Riddick‏@LRiddickESPN17 hrs

Terrence West to Cleveland is a great fit. One of my favorite players/stories in this entire draft.

Russ Lande did a nice article breaking down the 'tall corners' who would get taken later in this draft with the theme of trying to find the next Richard Sherman.

This is his take on CB Peiree Desir.

Finding The Next Richard Sherman

By Russ Lande

With the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl behind a great defense with a big secondary, many have pointed to NFL teams now wanting to find tall cornerbacks. However, NFL teams have always been searching for cornerbacks who are more than six feet tall and have the hips and speed to cover NFL receivers.

Richard Sherman was a raw cornerback prospect coming out of Stanford, but at 6-foot-2 ½ and 194 pounds with athleticism usually seen only in smaller cornerbacks, he has evolved into a star. If you look at the cornerbacks selected in the first round over the last 10 years, you see many who were drafted because they were over six feet and very athletic despite not being great college players. NFL teams hoped they could coach their size and athleticism well enough that they would become productive starters, but all too often they failed. As the search continues, here are the 2014 draft's best bets to follow Sherman's path:

2. Pierre Desir, Lindenwood, 6-foot-1 1/8, 195 pounds.

A big fish in a small pond at Lindenwood, Desir strutted his stuff in Tampa with a great week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game, which definitely grabbed the attention of the NFL as he was then invited to participate in the Senior Bowl the following week. Although he came to Mobile after a long week in Tampa, he picked up right where he left off and was one of the best corners all week. His footwork needs a ton of work, as he tends to be flat-footed in his backpedal, gets wide and takes extra steps when he transitions. However, he is a quick and explosive athlete, so despite bad footwork, when he reads the pass/route well he can close very fast, although it will be harder to get away with in the NFL.

No one will ever mistake Desir for a violent hitter, but he will fight through blocks to make tackles, which is not common amongst cornerbacks. He will need work on his jam and footwork, but in terms of talent I would be surprised if Desir is not selected on the second day of the draft.

Like it. Loved what Lombardi/Banner did last year with this strategy. Any WR we would/could have drafted in the 7th round here wouldn't amount to much if anything. Now we hold 10 picks in next year's draft and the late round throw-away picks allow teams to manuver in the mid rounds.

Tom Withers‏@twithersAP4m

#Browns have traded their final pick No. 218 to #Ravens for 6th round pick next year.

EDIT: Forgot to add the obvious. Any free agent WRs would naturally target Cleveland as their best-shot to land a practice squad spot or possibly get a legit shot at landing on an NFL roster, 'possibly' even a chance at getting playing time that they wouldn't have on most NFL teams. >>>

Brendan Leister‏@BrendanLeister30 mins

#Browns should be an attractive landing spot for UDFA WRs that want an opportunity to play early. Interested in seeing who is available.

Just got home so I don't know if this has hit this discussion yet. Wouldn't it be ironic if the Browns acquire Stevie Johnson?

Browns signed Alabama State RB Isaiah Crowell.

Crowell (5-foot-11, 224) went to Georgia as five-star prep recruit and started as a true freshman, posting a 185-850-4.6-5 stat line in 2011. He was arrested on felony weapons charges the following June, and promptly dismissed from the team. Resurfacing at Alabama State, he rushed 170 times for 1,121 yards (6.59 YPC) and 15 touchdowns in 2013, adding seven catches. Although Crowell has obvious off-field concerns, he's among the most talented running backs in the 2014 class with explosive lateral agility and a powerful lower body. He ran 4.57 at the Combine with a 9-foot-9 broad jump and 38-inch vertical. Also an able pass protector, Crowell won't need long to contribute to the Browns if his head is on straight. He's a high-ceiling Dynasty prospect and will give Terrance West all he can handle behind Ben Tate.

Manziel is an AWFUL pick for the Browns. Its stunning just how awful that is.

Manziel is a scrawny QB who LOVES to scramble and run with the football. You absolutely cannot put a QB like that in a division with the Steelers and Ravens because they will literally kill him. I look at the Ravens and Steelers drafts and they went 4 for 4 picking pass rushers in the first two rounds. They are going to bury Manziel in a heap somewhere behind the line of scrimmage and he will be carted off on a stretcher. Mark my words.

Manziel might be a franchise QB, but he does not belong in the AFC North. Awful pick for Cleveland. Bridgewater would have been a better fit since he doesn't run as much as a Manziel.

I also don't get taking a CB2 with the 9 pick. The AFC North doesn't have high powered pass offenses with multiple threats that warrant a high pick on a CB2. The opportunity cost was enormous as they had to pass on picking blue chip stud pass rushing LB Khalil Mack to do it. Who would you rather have? Khalil Mack and a CB2 in round 3, or Gilbert and Kirksey? Obviously the former. Yes they got two first rounders now in 2015 but drafting Mack is more appealing.

The way the Browns conducted their draft makes me think Pettine / Farmer do not know their division very well.

Radio City Music Hall was right when they shouted "Cleveland Sucks!"
Many will have that very opinion on Manziel. We'll just have to see what happens. I'm elated they didn't take a QB with the first pick and that they used the "free" Colts pick to take the gamble.

Completely disagree with your analysis on CB2. That player you wanted is a crapshoot in round 3, and you want to start him opposite Haden? We tried that last year and he was terrible which puts CBs (Skrine) on the field in a spot he shouldn't be in alot (outside). They also were probably surprised a player like Deshir was available that late in the 4th, but there in no way a player like that could step in and be CB2. Could be a nice find there though. I'm not sure you paid attention to how many time the Browns could not get off the field last year on 3rd down when teams threw the ball. The front 7 is pretty solid...Mingo should be expected to be better in his 2nd year...they needed to restack the secondary around Haden and Whitner with players that can play. That doesn't even factor in the changing defensive philosophy which will put great importance on Haden and Gilbert manning up on the perimeter. The first round pick next year just puts the move off the charts.

Traded pick 218 to Baltimore

And they use it on a wide receiver
Was looking...what did we get out of it? I assume a 6th next year?

At this point, I am OK with just looking through the UDFA WRs as opposed to taking a flier on a 7th rounder.
Yes, got the Ravens 2015 6th
hmm, that pick probably only ends up like 10-12 slots higher than what we had. Shoulda got 5th!!!!!!!!!!!! But fine with it

No S***, I wanted the top rated (on the Browns board) CB with their 1st pick and was happy. The Desir pick is complete insanity. You will start seeing "coverage" sacks next year. I like Bracie's analogy about veteran WR's becoming available because of the mass influx of the rookie pool. It's still early in the season. It's unbelievable that we have friggin 10 picks again next year. So this is how it feels to have a football guy as GM. Jimmy you done right for once.

Completely agree bobcat.

I'll only add one more point; and that's who gets thrown at most in the NFL? I think most would agree the #2 corner, especially when someone like hayden is locking down the opponent's # 1 on the other side. the guy on the other side is going to see many more balls by default - in their direction. Hope this kid is up to the task and I like that he's considered a press coverage specialist.

I do like how we drafted only 6 players (then immediately singed a good UDFA RB prospect), the latest being a 4th rounder, and have 10 picks again next year (with of course one of the extra picks being Buffalo's 1st).

While I do not like Johnny, every other picks seems like they have a rather good chance of being a quality player.

i know the Gordon issued isn't done/ confirmed, and that the 2014 season hasn't even been played, but:

what are the odds of the Browns using one of their two 1st rounders in 2015 on another talented yet seemingly troubled WR Dorial Green-Beckham?

Any chance one of next year's first/high rounders becomes this year's WR? Are any big name WRs up on trading blocks this year due to end of contract approaching, etc?

There's a theory floating around that Gordon VOLUNTARILY entered a program (for addiction) instead of getting caught during a test.

In this case, I think a deal would be cut w the league - hence the lack of panic from our FO and players.

----------------

Realistically speaking, Rosenhaus could have given him this advice immediately upon finding out from gordon that he would fail a test.

Logically thinking, wouldn't there be huge backlash against the NFL if they were to suspend a player an entire season who ADMITTED to a problem and voluntarily entered into a "rehab" to overcome those issues?

Suspending him for a season would send out a pretty horrible message and I feel like health care and mental health professional would #### all over the league for going that route.

Just a theory. Rosenhaus is a sly dog.

I have to temper my enthusiasm. (Wow! What a draft! )

Telling myself, "Wait. There are always busts. See who pans out & who doesn't."

They filled the hole at DB -- my biggest concern.

They filled the hole at OG.

They got a class-A QB (I hope).

They filled the ILB hole.

RB looks like a strong unit now.

No holes left. That makes us a .500 team -- a playoff contender. Next order of business is to go from average to great!

interesting theory. problem is, he should already be in a rehab program following his last suspension.

We couldn't get a 1st round pick for Josh Gordon who is without a doubt one of the most tallented WRs in the league when playing so I see no way in heck we'd have to pay a 1st round pick for a troubled WR who wouldn't come close to Gordon's talent level.

Gordon has it all, size, strength, blazing speed, made huge strides from rookie season and he's still very young with room to grow even more. Nobody out there who is or could be available is anything close to Josh Gordon.

Someone will come available but they won't be as talented but if a team is willing to dish then they have charactor issues or health or age issues attached with them so if we wind up making a deal the highest I see us going is a 3rd round pick but you can bet that fans and probably a lot of trolls from other teams will constantly be bringing up guys who suck and say we'd have to pay at least a 1st and a 3rd round picks for some smuck.

Just remember what those talking heads were saying last year when it was rumored Gordon was on the trading block. "They Browns can only expect a 3rd round pick for him." If those same morons come back and say the Browns will have to pay a 1st round pick for some guy who couldn't clean Gordon's jock then they can f'off just and that is exactly what I felt last year when they said the only thing we could get for him is a 3rd round pick.

Their will be plenty of WRs available as this thing works itself out. No need to panic, we keep both of those 2015 first round picks.

the D might being trending "Seattle" - but i see the O trending " San Fran" with a great line, power running, & mobile QB (taking their shots down field after drawing up the safeties)

Browns really could have used WR's M.Bryant (118 - Steelers) or K.Norwood (123-Seahawks) as mid round guys would could have become #2's in the 2014 season

Note that neither SF or SEA have great WRs.

They built up the D and the O-Line/run game but it all came together for them when they hit on their QBs.

Make no mistake about it, if we hit on Johnny Manziel everything else will work out.

Right. Their best receiver (Harvin) caught 1 pass in the regular season and 4 for 26 yards in the postseason. And the guy that led the team in catches and receiving yardage (Tate) is on another team now.

Seattle's WR corps was still better last year without Harvin than ours is right now. And SF has been trying to acquire WR improvements every year.

Not trying to be sky is falling. If we can get another serviceable vet we can get through the season. But if we want JFF to have the best chance of succeeding, we're going to need to prioritize getting him more weapons in the passing game next year.

Well, I suppose we could have drafted two WRs and still have problems at corner, o-line, linebacker...................

Browns have other options for WR besides draft. Trades and free agency still possible: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/24558515/ray-farmer-plenty-of-chances-for-browns-to-add-wr …
wait what????? You mean it's possible we can still sign or trade for more WRs??

Huh, I thought from may till september every player was mandated to stay on their current teams with no trades allowed, and all players released were not allowed to play again till 2015.

Maybe the sky isn't falling??????
