Let's kick off with the first 2011 rankings. These are based on the following criteria (roughly in the following order of importance): quality of offense, quality of kicker, age of kicker, kicker's home kicking conditions (dome, warm, cold), kicker's job security, long-term success (a bit of keeper/dynasty slant).

I think with kickers, past performance is no guarantee of future success, so these rankings probably will look much different than 2010 end of year leaderboard.

I didn't factor a scoring system, but I usually play in leagues that award a point extra for longer FGs (40 = 4 pts, 50 = 5 pts, etc.), so that may be a subjective factor here.

Besides player movement, I think the factors that will cause the most movement in the off-season will be strength of schedule (easy schedule is likely to result in more points) and change in the quality of team offenses. For example, if Minnesota's offense improves, Longwell may move up a lot, but probably not out of his tier.

not much thought put into this year but akers stands out for me.

with vick and the speed of their skill players spreading out the defense, they should have an easy time crossing midfield and getting into fg range pretty often. without a hammer at rb or a big 6'5 wr, they will struggle in the redzone

he was 7th in the league in weeks 1-8. since then, he was #1

The New Orleans Saints had their doubts about Garrett Hartley over the past two seasons. Last year, for instance, they deactivated him for two games, using veteran John Carney for two games in October. Now, the club appears ready to commit to him for the long haul. Adam Schefter of ESPN reported Tuesday night that Hartley has agreed to a five-year contract extension. Other outlets report a deal is imminent. The bottom line is it appears the Saints are comfortable with Hartley now.

It's still out there, but it's mostly in the fringes - perhaps a young player experimenting with it or a former practitioner demonstrating it. It hasn't seen the big time in nearly a decade, when St. Louis Rams kicker Jeff Wilkins resurrected it for the first part of the 2002 season. Even when it was popular (back in the 1980's) not many did it. Nonetheless, it still captures our imagination... LINK

Among the kickers eligible for this year's NFL draft, or signing as an undrafted free agent thereafter, is Oklahoma State's Dan Bailey. He ranks in the top five in the majority of the various draft rankings...
