Panthers signed RB Jonathan Stewart to a one-year extension through 2018.
Stewart turned 30 earlier this week. There was some belief that the Panthers could release Stewart this offseason, saving $6.25 million as a post-June 1 cut, but GM Dave Gettleman apparently thinks there's more in the tank. Stewart averaged a career-low 3.8 YPC (minimum 100 carries) last season, though he did score a seven-year-high nine touchdowns, seeing more goal-line work with the Panthers trying to limit Cam Newton's rushing opportunities. Gettleman has already said he'll draft a running back this year. Leonard Fournette at No. 8 could still be in play.

Jonathan Stewart insists he's fine with the Panthers' addition of Christian McCaffrey.
"Added value to the backfield, that's it," Stewart said. Stewart might honestly relish the addition of another back, as it should help keep him healthy. Stewart also has years of experience in two-man backfields. Signed to a one-year extension in March, Stewart's roster spot is not in doubt. He'll be a touchdown-dependent RB3/4 in fantasy leagues.

The Panthers' website expects Jonathan Stewart to "see the bulk of the carries" despite the addition of Christian McCaffrey.
Per team writer Max Henson, "everyone from head coach Ron Rivera to running backs coach Jim Skipper has insisted that Stewart's role will not change." While Stewart out-carrying McCaffrey would be a surprise after the Panthers drafted McCaffrey at No. 8 overall, it's true that fantasy drafters have been sleeping on Stewart as a significant threat to McCaffrey's ceiling and floor, particularly in the touchdown-scoring department.

ESPN's David Newton "could see" the Panthers releasing Jonathan Stewart.
Stewart is entering the final year of his contract and is due a $1.9 million salary and $1.6 million roster bonus. Cutting him would save the Panthers over $3.7 million against the cap. Stewart turns 31 next month and averaged a career-worst 3.5 YPC last year despite running behind one of the league's better offensive lines. Stewart had two 100-yard rushing games in 2017 and failed to top 70 yards in the 14 others. Carolina could/should go younger at the position.

He looked like he had the talent to be a great RB, but unfortunately injuries and a RBBC approach (with another great RB) hindered his production. If someone told you after his 2nd season that he'd play at least 8 more seasons but never reach 1000 yards rushing or 10 total TDs again, is there any way in hell you'd believe them?
Oh I know. Sigh. What could have been... Dude was a beast:He looked like he had the talent to be a great RB, but unfortunately injuries and a RBBC approach (with another great RB) hindered his production.
Maybe he signs with a team who actually wants to use him? Carolina was pergatory for Stewart.squistion said:He must really be a buy low now.

The end of an era in Carolina: The #Panthers released veteran RB Jonathan Stewart, who played every snap of his career with the team. There was talk of a possible paycut but it wasn’t to be.
My summary recollection is that he was rarely ever not on the injury report. That might just be a fantasy-based, "outside looking in" observation though.Dr. Octopus said:He looked like he had the talent to be a great RB, but unfortunately injuries and a RBBC approach (with another great RB) hindered his production.
Giants agreed to terms with RB Jonathan Stewart, formerly of the Panthers.
He also visited the Seahawks and Lions on his free agent tour. Stewart will be reuniting with former Panthers GM Dave Gettleman as well as OC Mike Shula in East Rutherford. J-Stew has shown his age by averaging just 3.62 yards per carry over his last two seasons, though he's also contributed 16 touchdowns during that span. The 30-year-old is little more than a committee back at this stage of his career. The addition of Stewart shouldn't have any bearing on whether the Giants draft Penn State RB Saquon Barkley, assuming he's available with the No. 2 pick.

Makes sense, all the good RBs are in the second level being chased by the fast players while Stewart is still back eluding the nose tackle.(USA Today Fantasy Sports) New York Giants RB Jonathan Stewart has forced 124 missed tackles over the last three seasons according to Pro Football Focus, the most of any running back over that span.

Jonathan Stewart - RB - Giants
Jonathan Stewart's place on the Giants' depth chart has been "clouded" by Wayne Gallman's strong preseason.
Stewart has just two yards on seven carries this preseason, while Gallman "seemed to win over" the Giants' coaching staff with a two-score second exhibition game. Stewart could end up in a mentor-only role behind Saquon Barkley and Gallman, and isn't even the clear handcuff to Barkley any longer.

ESPN NFL Nation's Jordan Raanan believes Jonathan Stewart will be on the Giants' roster in Week 1.
Stewart has performed so poorly this preseason that he's nearly played his way off of the team's roster. He's slugged for a nightmarish -5 yards on 10 carries thus far and will likely sit in the team's preseason finale. The Giants are still hoping he can fill a short-yardage role in the regular season following his two-year, $6.9 million deal in free agency, but those duties will inevitably fall to rookie Saquon Barkley. If the No. 2 overall pick ever misses time, the G-men will be in heaps of trouble.

Jonathan Stewart retired after 11 seasons in the NFL.
Stewart signed a one-day contract to retire with the Panthers, the team which made him the 13th overall pick back in 2008 and was his home for 10 of 11 seasons. Early in his career, Stewart formed a dynamic partnership with DeAngelo Williams, and the pair helped carry the team to a 12-4 record in 2008. Stewart struggled with injuries throughout most of his career, but he was able to appear in at least 13 games each of his final four seasons in Carolina, averaging almost 925 yards from scrimmage and seven touchdowns over that span. Stewart finishes his career with the most rushing yards in Panthers history.

One of those guys I wonder what he would have been able to do if he'd been able to stay healthy.Pretty solid NFL career. Didn't live up to the 13th overall pick but is 59th all time in yards rushing. Solid career.
Tol-dozier's diesel has be idling all off season. Given that the Panther's may carry 5 backs this year, you'd be better off throwing a dart at the NFL depth charts rather than wasting a spot on Stewart.
I appreciate your thoughts. My vitriol isn't with anything you said about him, just the facts of the situation.
1. DW was a HOF caliber RB and still not too far off that level. JS will not send him to the bench.
2. Tolbert is a short yardage boll dozier, a huge red zone threat, and can catch out of the back field.
3. Cam Kent is hanging out in the phone booth waiting to emerge for 8-60 any given week. Beyond that, Superman is 3rd in the league in rushing TDs over the last three years, only surpassed by ADP and Lynch.
4. G-man has drafted two other RBs, Barner and someone else this year.
5. The OL is in shambles.
Bottom line is that you have a Barbie Mini Bake Oven sized pie available and JS is just getting a shot at the crumbs left behind.
ebf - time to pull the plug
His value drops with each passing injury, but at the end of the day he's 27 years old with a dirt cheap dynasty price tag. If he stays healthy for even one of the next three seasons and is reasonably close to his peak talent level, he'll still provide a positive return on the investment required to get him right now. It would be one thing if he were still being valued like a top 20-25 dynasty RB, but that's no longer the case. Many of the guys in his ADP range are equally unlikely to do anything, but for different reasons. I'd rather have the hyper-talented guy with durability problems than the dime-a-dozen talent with a clean bill of health. It's more conceivable for Stewart to stay out of the training room for 3-4 months than it is for someone like Lance Dunbar or James White to suddenly become a viable NFL talent overnight.
Jonathan Stewart would get hurt carrying the mail.
The mailman doesn't deliver on Sunday and neither does Stewart.
Williams inactive.
Can Stewart make something happen tonight?
More disappointment.
I don't buy it. You'll be back pimping him soon enough and leading the lambs to slaughter once again.
It took Michael Dyer a month to heal from that. You know what that means.
Pencil Stewart into your starting lineups for Halloween weekend.
Keep Pierce. At least he can rot on your bench and you won't be tempted to start him.
This is a bunch of horse hockey.
I've been here for years telling you how it is while you've been pimping this roster anchor for nearly a decade. By the way, Benjamin's injury should be a push because he was a huge TD option in the red zone. J. Charles doesn't seem to have a problem racking up yards and TDs with no WR threat.
LOL…Rather than insulting those of us who have been giving solid advice, why don't you just apologize for misleading people for the last decade.
FYI…Brown and Ginn have the speed to stretch the field. More importantly, Cam has the arm to stretch it. Personally I would place more importance on the QB than the WRs. Freaking James Jones gets gets cut by the Raiders and Giants and Rodgers makes him a top 20 WR. Also while Benjamin was looking like a good talent, let's not forget that he put the bulk of his stats during garbage time.
