Lamar Miller, 2016, Infinity and beyond (2 Viewers)

On his 14 yard run he was one guy away form going the distance for a looooong TD run.

He is on his way. Thomas was again.....blech.
I was thinking the same thing.

Miller was on my bench in all leagues but now Wilson and Ridley can suck the moak off my balls - and stay there.

Wait...

The whole Dolphins offense looked good yesterday, Tannehill was slinging it and Sherman started channeling his inner Mike Martz with the play calling. The biggest concern again on Miller is how easily he goes down on first contact, he's gotta start moving the pile and breaking some tackles if he wants to get the full load.
Breaking tackles just isn't his forte; he's not someone I'd be rushing up the gut. He's a speedster, which was showcased on his TD run where he got to the edge in a flash. I think there are going to be some big plays in store down the road but his upside is going to be capped by the lack of volume. I mean, even Charles Clay got a call at the GL, where he punched it in.

I'm concerned that, in a game the dolphins were leading or tied for a majority of the time, the backs only had 22 carries vs 34 passing attempts. I'm concerned with drives like these:

1-10-MIA20 (13:01) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill pass incomplete short left to C.Clay.2-10-MIA20 (12:58) (Run formation) R.Tannehill pass short right to M.Wallace to MIA 26 for 6 yards (G.Toler).3-4-MIA26 (12:19) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill pass deep left to B.Hartline to 50 for 24 yards (L.Landry).1-10-50 (11:43) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill pass incomplete short right to M.Wallace (G.Toler).2-10-50 (11:37) (Run formation) R.Tannehill pass incomplete short right to B.Hartline.3-10-50 (11:31) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill sacked at MIA 42 for -8 yards (sack split by P.Angerer and B.Werner).4-18-MIA42 (10:56) B.Fields punts 25 yards to IND 33, Center-J.Denney, out of bounds.or

1-10-MIA20 (9:14) (Run formation) D.Thomas up the middle to MIA 26 for 6 yards (J.Freeman; G.Toler).2-4-MIA26 (8:39) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill pass short middle to M.Wallace to MIA 32 for 6 yards (J.Freeman).1-10-MIA32 (7:59) (Run formation) R.Tannehill pass short left to B.Hartline pushed ob at MIA 44 for 12 yards (V.Davis).1-10-MIA42 (7:44) (Run formation) R.Tannehill FUMBLES (Aborted) at MIA 41, recovered by MIA-T.Clutts at MIA 42. T.Clutts to MIA 44 for 2 yards (R.Mathis).2-10-MIA44 (7:04) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill pass short left to M.Wallace to MIA 48 for 4 yards (V.Davis).3-6-MIA48 (6:27) (Shotgun) R.Tannehill pass incomplete short middle to C.Clay (A.Bethea).4-6-MIA48 (6:22) B.Fields punts 43 yards to IND 9, Center-J.Denney. D.Butler to IND 18 for 9 yards (C.Clemons).these were both from the first half, Dolphins nursing a lead. 6 and 7 play drives, just one single run. This comes from a coach who made a living off of feeding Aaron Rodgers with no running game - a coach quite content to air it out, ground game be damned.

Of Millers 14 carries, 3 came in garbage time... leading up to the last drive of the game, Miller was sitting on 11 carries for 59 yards. That's a healthy YPC, but not nearly the usage one would hope for.

further compounding the issue, Daniel Thomas continued to plod away 8 additional carries.

To me, this looks like a 65/35 RBBC in a pass-first offense. Yuck.
There was no garbage time in this game. Miller effectively ended the game with a nice 8 yard run for a first down, allowing Miami to kneel down. I thought Miller looked pretty good in this game. He had an opportunity to utilize his strength, which is his speed. He is not a powerful runner, in fact, looks to have well below average power, but if he gets a seam, he will take it and get you yardage.

There's no question about Miller's explosiveness - if he could break tackles he would be a stud.

Why would someone like Matt Waldman comparei Miller to Clinton Portis if he wasn't strong enough to run inside and break a few arm tackles. That just doesn't make sense. So either he is developing that skill or Waldman is way off in his RSP on this kid.

I would love if Waldman would come into these threads and comment on what he's noticed in NFL games vs. what he saw on college tape.

LOL. Waldman is great, but he's wrong all the time dude. Just like virtually everyone else who scouts college players. The NFL guys are the best in the world at this stuff, and they miss half the time even in the 1st round.

thomas definitely looked better on the inside runs, not gonna lie. But Miller was used as the guy to finish up the game. It was NOT garbage time as was pointed out. The game outcome was still in doubt. It was win the game when the defense knows you're running time. He came through this time. Thomas didn't get first first touch until mid-way through the 2nd Q.

Thomas has had a fumbling problem - that may be why Miller finished the game.

His comparison to Portis is his speed, agility and ability to break long plays, chunk yardage and score from anywhere on the field. Power is not his MO.....he is a classic one cut and go runner. He is a perfect fit for a zone blocking running scheme and that is exactly what the Dolphins are running under Philbin.

He is only going to get better as the season goes on. He will do far more with 15-18 carries and 2-3 receptions than DT.

Far more.

ok, point ceded. It wasn't garbage time, but the point still stands - 14 carries in a game you are leading or tied a majority of the time is not encouraging, especially when considering what happened the week prior (55% of RB carries, 62/38 pass/run ratio = 10 rushing attempts in a game Dolphins lead or tied all but 8 minutes).eta: look at this drive from game 1:

4 11:54 1 10 MIA 15 Ryan Tannehill pass complete short left to Brandon Gibson for 24 yards (tackle by Christopher Owens) 13 10 -0.22 1.53

4 11:36 1 10 MIA 39 Ryan Tannehill pass complete short left to Brian Hartline for 16 yards (tackle by Christopher Owens) 13 10 1.53 2.59

4 11:01 1 10 CLE 45 Dallas Thomas right guard for 1 yard (tackle by John Hughes) 13 10 2.59 2.18

4 10:22 2 9 CLE 44 Ryan Tannehill pass incomplete short right intended for Mike Wallace 13 10 2.18 1.49

4 10:18 3 9 CLE 44 Ryan Tannehill pass complete short right to Brandon Gibson for 14 yards (tackle by Christopher Owens) 13 10 1.49 3.58

4 9:40 1 10 CLE 30 Ryan Tannehill pass complete short left to Brian Hartline for 7 yards (tackle by Tashaun Gipson) 13 10 3.58 3.98

4 9:01 2 3 CLE 23 Dallas Thomas left guard for 1 yard (tackle by D'Qwell Jackson and Phil Taylor) 13 10 3.98 3.4

4 8:22 3 2 CLE 22 Ryan Tannehill pass complete short right to Brandon Gibson for 6 yards (tackle by Buster Skrine) 13 10 3.4 4.51

4 7:39 1 10 CLE 16 Ryan Tannehill pass complete short right to Brian Hartline for 11 yards (tackle by D'Qwell Jackson) 13 10 4.51 6.06

4 6:55 1 5 CLE 5 Ryan Tannehill pass incomplete short left intended for Brandon Gibson. Penalty on Buster Skrine: Defensive Pass Interference, 4 yards (no play) 13 10 6.06 6.97

4 6:51 1 1 CLE 1 Dallas Thomas right guard for 1 yard, touchdown 19 10 6.97 7

Dolphins had a 13-10 lead in the 4th quarter. 11 play drive, 2 rushes.

Ok you guys are overthinking this a bit... You don't bring in Green Bay's offensive coordinator so that you can install a ground & pound offense. As they have done in GB under Philbin, they will pass even when not needed. It's what he does. (Shrugs)

Lamar is a HR hitter. Not a 25-30 carry a game guy. 16-22 touches (between runs and some passes)....that is what he needs. And he will get those as the season keeps going and he breaks a few long TD runs as he will undoubtly do very soon.

He still has 1100-1200 yards easy in him with 6-8 TD's RB2 material. He can also put up a couple of monster games along the way. If he gets 260 carries (average of 16 carries a game for 16 games) and averages 4.6 YPC.......1200 yards. He will score....no doubt he will score some dazzling TD's and you can see at the GL...he is very fast to edge on HB toss and stretch plays.

This past game vs Indy was much more encouraging for the OL. Lamar had some space to run. He had absolutely nothing to work with in week one.

His time is now.

Starting him with confidence.

I like him but the Indy defense is as bad as it gets. Atl has injury issues up front, so I am starting him at RB2 across 2 league where I have him

8 carries.... yea...!

it seems the only thing that is going to make miller a viable RB2 is if daniel thomas gets hurt.

he did good I thought, but you cant control the coaches not handing him the ball.

he had a nice early long run.

I dont trust him this week vs Saints thats for sure

Doesn't that feel weird to type? You don't trust a starting running back against the Saints. What is going on this year?

Salguero with an interesting write-up here on the Dolphins offense. In short, he calls for a more balanced attack, more carries for Lamar and less for Daniel Thomas.

If anyone is interested..

Snap Percentage

Lamar Miller - 53% - 47% - 46%

Daniel Thomas - 47% - 53% - 45%

Utilization

Lamar Miller - 11- 16 - 11 (32 rushing attempts, 4 targets)

Daniel Thomas - 9 - 9 - 6 (21 rushing attempts, 3 targets)

Utilization to Snap Ratio

Lamar Miller - 3.3:1 (30%) - 1.9:1 (53%) - 2.4:1 (42%)

Daniel Thomas - 3.6:1 (28%) - 3.9:1 (26%) - 4.2:1 (24%)

I think the Saints might get ahead early and force Miami to throw alot and abandon the run.

This is certainly possible, but the Saints havent been lights out this year. They were good against the Cards, but barely beat the Bucs, who are ranked in the bottom 3 of most power polls and only put up 16 points against them. They also were a play away from losing to the Falcons (1-2) at home. They have no running game, and the only threat offensively is Jimmy Graham - granted its a hell of a threat. Colston is good, but not scary, and Lance Moore barely even exists anymore. Kenny Stills? Robert Meachem? Dont get me wrong - I understand that Drew Brees is always capable of putting up 400 and 4 - especially at home. Just not so sure that it is a safe assumption that Miami will get blown out in this game, and have to abandon the run. The Fins are not a push over this season. At least not so far.

Well, the 'phins are this close (||) to abandoning the run anyways, so...

Just not so sure that it is a safe assumption that Miami will get blown out in this game, and have to abandon the run. The Fins are not a push over this season. At least not so far.
Well, the 'phins are this close (||) to abandoning the run anyways, so...
Fair enough. I would assume that they will try their luck on the ground on Monday to try to burn clock and keep Brees off the field, but you never know. Philbin certainly didnt stress the running game in GB.

Utilization to Snap Ratio

Lamar Miller - 3.3:1 (30%) - 1.9:1 (53%) - 2.4:1 (42%)

Daniel Thomas - 3.6:1 (28%) - 3.9:1 (26%) - 4.2:1 (24%)

So, they don't trust him to pass block too often, and want to use Thomas enough to keep defenses honest when he's in there.

Not sure why that is. Every time I've seen him pass block, he's looked good.

I also think it should be noted (I haven't seen it here yet) that last week against ATL, Miller had a sure-fire 35-yard TD reception doink off his hands.

He did have a drop on a wheel route that would have been a TD. I would not say it was an easy catch, but he should have had it. Philbin did say it's an example of how Lamar's speed creates mismatches so I expect him to get many more chances at plays like that.

I thought Miller looked good tonight. For a half. Then he didn't really get a chance to touch the ball as the Saints rolled. He was in on a few series, but Tannehill doesn't seem to look at RBs at all on passing plays if it's not designed for them. Thomas failed in a few short yardage attempts in the red zone area too, but the blocking wasn't there. Got me double digits points tonight, more than I expected to be honest. I'm thinking he's trending up.

Kinda ironic that Miami sits there watching Sproles run loose all over the place and the light never comes on for Miami to use Miller in space.

I think it's clear the coaching staff is clueless.
This. I like what I see from Miller whenever I get a chance to see him play. Not sure why Miami continues to play Thomas as much as they do. Or why they don't get the ball to Miller in space more often.

LOL, that's exactly what I was thinking. Granted, Miller isn't as quick and accomplished of a receiving RB as Sproles, but it should have given them some inspiration we can hope :)

thanks for the news flash. this thread is for the Miller train. Get on or get out of the way. :welcome:

The Dolphins' coaching staff has the team at 3-1 -- they don't care about your fantasy team.
Obviously the Miami staff has done well to be at 3-1 but.....Really? I don't own Miller, but you can't tell me that you watched that game last night and didn't wonder why Miller was not touching the ball more in the rushing/passing game. He has effortless speed and I actually think he runs very well out of the shotgun. Also thought Tannehill missed him open in the passing game a few times when he was focused down field and couldn't find the simple outlet receiver so he took a sack.

While the premise that the Dolphins are 3-1 is correct, last night was certainly on the coaching staff for not running the ball more to keep their own D off the field and not utilizing all of their playmakers. (They also only took like 1 shot down the field to Wallace)

At the end of the day, I've gotten to see Miami play twice now (against Indy and last night) and do believe that Miller can be a difference-making talent and wonder why he goes for such long periods of time without touching the ball. I also believe that both he and Thomas are average pass blockers, but Miller offers much more explosiveness in the checkdown/screen game.

Just pointing out that calling them "clueless" is pretty dumb, but carry on.
Perspective is important here, which you're leaving out. People are speaking in reference to last night, a game they lost badly. It was also a game they could have won and was close at half with Mia getting the ball. Miller was clearly the most effective weapon they had in the game and he touched the ball once in the second half. Yeah, the coaching was bad last night. The other 3 games mean nothing in this context. Overall I'd say Mia is being coached fairly well. Last night was simply an abortion.

this same coaching staff was running daniel thomas out there on third downs over reggie bush last year....their current GM (who just got extended mind you) traded up to take thomas

I would hope moving forward that the dolphins move towards letting miller have every 2 out of 3 series.... rather than the alternating series thing they are doing right now.
