RB Giovani Bernard, TB (2 Viewers)

Did not practice today due to a concussion.
Rotoworld:

Giovani Bernard (concussion) did not practice Wednesday.

This is the first anyone's hearing of a Bernard concussion, so perhaps it's a new issue that popped up Wednesday, similar to the D'Andre Swift situation last week. Bernard now has four days to progress through the league's strenuous protocols. If he can't play in Week 12, Samaje Perine is next man up followed by Trayveon Williams. It's another lost season for the Bengals.

Did Gio get a concussion during the game or walking to the bus?

Odd that we're heaving about this on Wednesday.

Although what else is new I guess with Z. Taylor.

Perine probably flex worthy for the desperate. As a Gio owner I'm not even bothering though.

Dynasty I am trying to trade him away while he has some to little value.  I do not need him for may playoff run so may try and deal him to a rb needy playoff bubble team for a chance that Leveon Bell of some other upside flier.

Giovani Bernard (concussion) was a limited participant for Thursday's practice.

It's an upgrade from Wednesday's surprising DNP designation. Third-stringer Samaje Perine has averaged 8.3 touches in Cincinnati's last three games and would likely get the first crack at Bernard's role in a timeshare with Trayveon Williams if Gio is shockingly ruled out. Friday's injury designation will be worth monitoring.

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said he "feels good" about Gio Bernard's (concussion) chances of playing this week against the Giants.

Bernard returned to practice late in the week after missing Wednesday's practice. He should be good to go for Sunday against New York. Joe Burrow being out for the season lowers the fantasy floors and ceilings for every Bengals skill position player, including Bernard. He still has a shot to catch some short passes in a game that should see the Bengals face considerable negative game script. Fantasy players should treat him as a high-end RB3 this week. Samaje Perine would probably get the start if Bernard is inactive.

Giovani Bernard (concussion) is questionable for Week 12 against the Giants.

Even if Bernard, who practiced in full on Friday, is cleared from the league's protocol prior to kick-off, fantasy players should lower their expectations for the Bengals' offense as a whole with Brandon Allen under center. Bernard has also ceded 11, 8, and 6 touches to teammate Samaje Perine in Cincinnati's last three games. Consider Gio a middle-of-the-road RB3 for Sunday.

DFS Slant:

Bernard makes for an interesting DFS bargain if he plays. The Cincinnati RB has 20+ fantasy point upside, as he surpassed that threshold in two of his last three outings. Bernard will face a Giants team that has allowed the seventh-most fantasy points to RBs this year.

Very small sample size but Brandon Allen completed exactly 0 passes to RBs in his 3 starts foe Denver (though the Bengals don't have a TE as talented as Fant who got a bunch).

But obv if you are looking to start Gio you probably cannot worry about such things at this point.

Holding, but gonna watch him from the bench this week in favor of Gallman and Brian Hill.

Am hoping he has a great game and reestablishes himself as the man going forward. His schedule the next few is sweet.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (concussion, questionable) is expected to play in Week 12 against the Giants.

Bernard has split running work with veteran back Samaje Perine in recent weeks but remains the pass-catching back of choice for the Bengals. That's important because Cincinnati doesn't project to be in many favorable game-scripts with Brandon Allen as their starting quarterback to close out the year. Bernard is a viable RB2 in PPR leagues this week.

Giovani Bernard rushed eight times for 32 yards in the Bengals' Week 12 loss to the Giants, adding two receptions for 17 additional yards.

Bernard had seven more carries than any other Bengals back, but with the passing game completely incapable of sustaining drives, there wasn't much work to go around. Bernard has now been held below 10 carries in three straight games. Joe Mixon must miss at least one more game on injured reserve, but with bye weeks functionally over and the player pool flush, Bernard is struggling to provide RB2 relevance in a dead-letter offense. The Dolphins are a shy-away Week 13 matchup.

Is this guy droppable now in a standard (non ppr) league?
The first few fill in weeks for Mixon were great. But Gio has regressed and this offense is just a dumpster fire without Burrow. I know RBs are tough to come by, but would anyone feel remotely comfortable starting this guy in the playoffs going forward?

I'm in a league with two flex positions so for me, he's potentially flex worthy.

The matchup isn't bad against Miami this weekend...especially if Tua somehow plays. Also, Perine was nowhere to be found yesterday which was a bit of a surprise.

Would I expect much? Nope. But if I could squeeze out 10 PPR points it may make do.

Basically expectation needs to be that or an average back on a team that struggles to move the ball.  Allen may get more comfortable playing and better timing may help - but the game scripts just look bad.  5 total targets to RBs - Allen just doesn't use them a lot.  My quick scans shows 3 third and short situations.  One a Gio run for the first, one Allen run for a first, one incompletion - a little small sample size but I don't think they pull him at the goal line necessarily but will they ever get down there?

Hey he's starting is the sum of the appeal.

Giovani Bernard rushed 25 times for 83 yards and one touchdown in the Bengals' Week 15 win over the Steelers, adding a 14-yard touchdown catch on his lone target.

After fumbling on his first touch last week and getting benched for the rest of the half, the Bengals went right back to Bernard as their feature back against the Steelers. The 26 touches were easily a new season high, as Cincinnati went with a Bernard-centric game plan featuring their running game. He and Ryan Finley combined for 35 carries, as Finley threw the ball just 13 times in a game the Bengals surprisingly controlled from start to finish. Bernard's scores were a four-yard rushing score on the ground and 14-yard receiving one from Finley where the QB was drilled on the throw. Bernard can't be trusted as anything more than a low-end RB2 for Week 16 at Houston.

Kleck hasn't visited in a year so doubt this thread title ever gets fixed

Giovani Bernard rushed 16 times for 65 yards and caught 7-of-8 targets for 66 yards in Week 16 against the Texans.

This was another high-volume game for Bernard, but he was outshined by Samaje Perine (146 total yards, 2 TDs). Bernard's snaps were scaled back in the second half with Perine running hot. The Texans defense is among the worst in the league, but Bernard's role is secure as one of the featured players in an offense that's missing Joe Mixon and Tyler Boyd. Bernard is a low-end RB2 for Week 16 against the Ravens.

Bernard ceded the backfield to Samaje Perine and Trayveon Williams in the blowout loss to the Ravens. Bernard was second on the team in rushing yards despite Joe Mixon missing ten games with a foot injury. His main function this season, as usual, was in the passing game. He caught 47 balls on 58 targets as the Bengals' No. 1 running back for much of the season. Bernard, who is signed through the 2021 season, should return to the Bengals as a rotational back.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports "multiple teams" having called the Bengals to inquire about RB Giovani Bernard.

Releasing Bernard on the final year of his deal would save the team $4.2 million against the cap with just $666,000 in dead money. It's still possible he simply restructures his deal and sticks around since Zac Taylor did (frustratingly) prefer to use the veteran over Joe Mixon on passing downs. The latter did handle 27 touches per game in his last three starts before suffering a season-ending foot injury, which is a reasonable outlook for his usage if Bernard is moved/released in the coming weeks.

Bengals released RB Gio Bernard.

The mustachioed pass-catching specialist will move on after eight years with the Bengals. The team has reportedly asked the veteran to take a pay cut. Bernard then asked the team to release him -- a move that will save the Bengals $4.2 million against the salary cap. Bernard, 29, has shown clear signs of decline in recent years: ESPN's Mike Clay said Bernard's 3.4 yards per carry is fourth worst among running backs with more than 200 carries since 2018. 2015 was his best year in Cincinnati, totaling 1,202 yard and two touchdowns. He'll certainly catch on with another team in the coming weeks. Joe Mixon might see a bit more pass-catching work with Bernard gone, though Mixon saw a healthy 27 targets in six games last year.

Long-time fan of Bernard, so my opinion may carry bias, but a change of scenery will be beneficial, I think.  Schefter quote: 'clear signs of decline'...I don't think that's a accurate portrayal at all. I think he has a lot left, and under the right circumstances, can generate some very respectable stats.

Also, given that he's a high-character guy, who carries weight with the city, fans and team, and around the League, I think his release was largely procedural fallout of the business side of the NFL. I have no doubt the Bengals 1st priority was too keep him around, at their optimal cap niche. They asked him to take a pay cut, which they had to do; he declined, which he had every reason to do; and based on his standing with the Team, they did him a solid by allowing him the ability to choose his next destination. I absolutely believe multiple Teams inquired about his availability. I also believe talks never evolved into actual offers, because of the circumstances I've attempted to illustrate above. Not all negotiations between teams are cat-and-mouse. He's one of those rare players who deserves the opportunity to 'go get his'. I'm sure that was all out on the table with inquiring Teams - 'unless you're going to blow us away, which you're not, make him your best offer, not us.'

He's not going to be bowing and scraping for crumbs. He's going to get muliple offers, and sign a solid deal, when the dust settles, I think. It's likely a little late in the game for him (RB) to sign a one-year, 'prove it', and hit the market again next year looking for a bigger deal, but you never know. I think Teams value him enough to make him a 2-year offer, one of which he'll take.

I'm very excited to see him in a new uniform. There's more to Gio than meets the eye - he's a solid all-around player, and pro.

I agree, he's a solid all-around player and pro, but that doesn't mean a lot for fantasy and never has when it comes to Bernard, except as an emergency flex play at best, especially now.  If you're having to start Gio Bernard your team is probably not that great to begin with.

I think you are undervaluing him - when he gets the start he's usually a solid play especially ppr.  Definitely a starting RB on a 2 RB league.

Lot's of good spots for him - some great ones are Buffalo, Miami, NE, Pitt, Atl, TB

Interesting. I wouldn't call him the favorite to win the job over any of Singletary/Moss, Gaskin, Harris/Michel, Davis, or Jones/Fournette. Maybe I could see him being the favorite to start over the current crew in Pittsburgh.

He has always been a pretty much locked in RB2 when Mixon misses time though, as well as pre-Jeremy Hill in cicny. He's very solid in the passing game, so if he starts, he gets the volume to produce a good fantasy floor. I just don't see him starting except for injury.

Buccaneers signed RB Giovani Bernard, formerly of the Bengals, to a one-year contract.

Bernard, who had at least 30 catches in all eight seasons he played with the Bengals, adds another receiving option to Tampa Bay's backfield ahead of Ronald Jones. The deal also likely takes the Bucs out of contention for a back in the draft, though Leonard Fournette's, Jones', and Bernard's contracts all expire at the end of this year. Bernard will be more of a nuisance for fantasy than actual option among this group. Ke'Shawn Vaughn is the early favorite to be healthy scratched behind all on game days.

Dude never panned out as an all out stud, but he sure has been around for a long time.
It's an interesting question as to what kind of stats he would have put up if the Bengals hadn't gotten Mixon. He's not really special but he's the affordable kind of back a smart team should want.

Fills the last real “need” for the Bucs. I was surprised he was still around. “Just” 29. RBs last a bit longer when they’re the receiving variety.

Ronald Jones is between the 20s. Fournette is short yards and inside 20. Gio is in on 3rd downs. That’s how I see it anyway.
That too. He’s being brought in for a very specialized role. 3rd down receiving RB threat was the most glaring weakness on the offense.

The Athletic's Greg Auman reports the Bucs signed RB Giovani Bernard because the team's running backs struggled with drops in 2020.

It's true: No backfield had a higher drop rate (14.7 percent) than Tampa last year. That's more than double the league's average drop rate of 6.6 percent. Leonard Fournette had seven drops on 47 targets, Ronald Jones had five drops on 42 looks, and rookie Ke’Shawn Vaughn dropped three of his 10 targets. It proved an irritant for checkdown master Tom Brady, and the Bucs were determined to address the issue this offseason, briefly courting James White before he re-signed with New England. Jones and Fournette took turns as the primary pass catcher out of Brady's backfield; neither had much success until Lombardi Lenny's impressive postseason run. Bernard's blocking prowess, according to Auman, was also a selling point for Tampa. Pro Football Focus gave Bernard its seventh-highest pass blocking grade out of 70 graded backs in 2020, compared to Jones (44th) and Fournette (65th). Even so, you'd be hard pressed to find weekly fantasy value in Bernard.

Folks expecting James White's #s from a few years ago are going to be disappointed.
Probably. The Bucs have much better receivers than Brady had to work with in NE.

That said look at the targets to the RBs they did have. Its a lot of targets and if Bernard gets the majority of those he could prove to be useful. Look at what Mike Davis did last year for example, I dont think anyone including myself expecting him to do as well as he did. I think Bernard is a better overall player than Mike Davis is.
