WR Sammy Watkins, BAL (1 Viewer)

But what if...

The playoffs and week 1 are an indication of Sammy's real role on this team?

With a power running game to keep defenses honest, and to save PM from big hits, it's easy to envisage a scenario where Watkins becomes their possession receiver, the Chiefs Wes Welker to Tyreeks Randy Moss.

If so, this could be the last week to grab him before everyone realizes what they have in Sammy Watkins - a high floor WR2.

Seems like a WR2/3 to me in that O.   Teams like to copy each other and may try to contain Tyreek.   That helps CEH and Watkins.

Sammy Watkins tweeted that he was "healthy" after taking a helmet-to-helmet shot from Los Angeles' Denzel Perryman in Sunday's win over the Chargers.

Hit in the fourth quarter, Watkins did not return. It appeared that he had suffered a concussion, but that is apparently not the case. Thursday's injury report will provide the final word. Watkins was having a quiet game (1/11) before going down after his 7/82/1 Week 1. He will be a low-floor, high-ceiling WR3 if he gets cleared to face the Ravens on Monday.

Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins is in the league's concussion protocol.

Watkins after the Chiefs' Week 2 win over the Chargers insisted he was fine after taking a head shot from Denzel Perryman in the fourth quarter. Head coach Andy Reid confirmed Thursday that Watkins is in the NFL's concussion protocol, adding that "it's more neck now than the other part." Presumably the other part is Watkins' brain. Watkins missing this week's Monday night game against Baltimore could open up more target for Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson.

Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol.

Saturday's practice report will be key for Watkins. Coach Andy Reid recently said the 27-year-old's injury is "more neck now than the other part," suggesting Watkins could still sit Monday night even if he's cleared from the league's protocol. Mecole Hardman, who recorded a 22-yard catch and three targets once Watkins exited in Week 2, would rotate with Demarcus Robinson if given the nod.

Sammy Watkins (concussion, neck) is questionable for Week 3 against the Ravens.

"We'll just monitor him as we go and see how he does," coach Andy Reid said. Watkins was upgraded to "full" for Saturday's practice, so his odds of suiting up for the Chiefs' likely Monday night shootout with the Ravens are looking good. Dynamite in Week 1, Watkins was quieter in Week 2. Coming off injury against an elite secondary, Watkins belongs on the WR3/4 borderline for Week 3.

Sep 26, 2020, 3:21 PM ET

Sammy Watkins (concussion, neck) is active for Week 3 against the Ravens Monday night.

Watkins practiced in full Saturday, so this was always the direction we expected this to go. He popped off in the Week 1 opener before a quiet Week 2 (1-11-0) before exiting with the head injury. Treat Watkins as a WR3 tonight. Inactive for the Chiefs are DE Alex Okafor, OG Andrew Wylie, CB BoPete Keyes, DE Demone Harris, and TE Ricky Seals-Jones.

Sammy Watkins caught 7-of-8 targets for 62 yards in the Chiefs' Week 3 win over the Ravens.

Watkins' eight targets led the team on a night he was cleared to play through a concussion and neck issue after leaving Week 2 early. In his two games he's played start to finish, Watkins has drawn 17 targets and caught a touchdown. He's paying off his summer ADP to this point as the clear No. 2 wideout. Watkins was also stopped inside the three-yard line in this one, setting up an Eric Fisher touchdown catch. Watkins will be a tough Week 4 play against the Patriots.

Sammy Watkins hauled in 4-of-7 targets for 43 yards in Kansas City's Week 4 win over New England.

Watkins has seen 15 targets the past two games but, in line with his career, has only averaged 10.7 fantasy points in that stint. He's averaged 7.8 per game since exploding for 21.5 against the Texans in Week 1. Watkins is a weekly FLEX option since's he always on the field behind Tyreek Hill, but performances like this are par for the course and are to be expected. He'll at least have a better on-paper matchup in Week 5 against the Raiders.

Sammy Watkins caught both of his targets for 24 yards and one touchdown in the Chiefs' Week 5 loss to the Raiders before leaving with a hamstring injury.

Watkins' hamstring knocked him out of the game in the second quarter as he grabbed it mid-route and never returned to the field. It had the look of a multi-week injury. Watkins did catch a red-zone touchdown from Patrick Mahomes before leaving the contest, but we'd say he's most likely going to miss next week's date with the Bills. Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson soaked up the snaps behind Tyreek Hill.

Yeah this looked like a 3 week IR situation to me. Was on the bench shaking his head and visibly upset, he had looked good in the game.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is expected to miss "a couple weeks."

The team's doctors are still evaluating Watkins' injury but he'll at the very least miss next week's Monday night showdown against the Bills (and likely the following game). Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman rivaled one another in routes run (20 to 18) in the second half on Sunday with Hardman notably playing 61% of his snaps from the slot. Although Robinson could very well lead Hardman in targets in the interim, the latter could easily out-produce Robinson on fewer touches. Expect both to be highlighted in John Daigle's Waiver Wire column Tuesday.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is likely to avoid injured reserve.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Watkins should miss a couple weeks with what appeared to be a severe hamstring injury. Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman rivaled one another in routes run (20 to 18) in the second half on Sunday against Vegas. Hardman played 61 percent of his snaps from the slot. He should be in lineups this week against Buffalo in 12-team fantasy leagues as a high-end WR3.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is out for Week 6 against the Bills.

Watkins is week to week but is expected to dodge the injured reserve, which would've guaranteed Watkins would miss at least three games. Watkins is unlikely to be ready for Week 7, however. The Chiefs will get Mecole Hardman onto the field more in his absence, and Tyreek Hill is due more targets as well. Watkins led the team in targets in 3-of-5 games before his injury. He's a bench hold in 12-team leagues if possible. Hardman now deserves WR3/flex consideration even if his floor remains low.

Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (hamstring) won't practice Thursday.

It's no surprise, as Watkins was expected to miss at least a couple weeks with his hamstring injury. He missed Week 6 and looks doubtful for Week 7. Fantasy managers should hang on to Watkins, who was seeing consistent opportunity in KC's high powered offense. Mecole Hardman proved last week that he's a (terribly) risky fantasy option even with Watkins sidelined. DeMarcus Robinson, after playing 95 percent of the team's Week 6 snaps and getting six targets, is the superior fantasy option this week against the Broncos.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Sammy Watkins (hamstring) will "most likely" be out for Week 7 against the Broncos.

As expected. Demarcus Robinson ran a route on 100% of Patrick Mahomes' dropbacks on Monday night and finished with one fewer target (6) than Travis Kelce (7). Expect a similar workload for Robinson against the Broncos' injury-riddled defense. Mecole Hardman remains a deep league FLEX option after playing 40% of Kansas City's snaps and failing to record a single catch in that same game.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) remained sidelined for Thursday's practice.

Watkins isn't expected to play after missing practice on both Wednesday and Thursday. Kansas City's starters were benched in the second half of Sunday's blowout, but Demarcus Robinson has still been used as the team's No. 1 wideout over (and has run more routes than) Tyreek Hill sans Watkins the past two weeks. Robinson remains a WR4 against the Jets' invisible secondary.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports Sammy Watkins (hamstring) isn't expected to play in Week 8 against the Jets.

Watkins was trending this way after not practicing this week. The Chiefs have no reason to rush Watkins in a game they can win without him. Watkins should have a better chance at returning in Week 9.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) was a limited participant for Wednesday's practice.

It was the first time Watkins practiced since initially suffering his soft tissue injury in Week 5. Mecole Hardman was used ahead of Demarcus Robinson for the first time all year against the Jets, but that would likely come to an end if Watkins is able to get back on the field versus Carolina. His participation to close the week will be crucial.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) remained "limited" in Thursday's practice.

Watkins is tentatively on track to suit up for the first time since Week 5, but nothing can be assumed for a player with Watkins' injury history. A "full" Friday session would erase any doubt. If Watkins does get the go ahead to play against the Panthers, he will return as a probationary WR4 as we assess his health and role in the Chiefs' evolving skill corps.

Nov 6, 2020, 12:32 AM ET

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is questionable for Week 9 against the Panthers.

Mecole Hardman was used over Demarcus Robinson for the first time all year against the Jets, recording seven of his nine targets while Patrick Mahomes and the starters were still on the field, but that would all come to an end if Watkins is able to return. The latter should be stashed ahead of Sunday but isn't an immediate trustworthy start since he hasn't played (and barely practiced) with a soft tissue injury since Week 5.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) returned to practice in full on Wednesday.

Watkins has been out of the lineup since Week 5, but the bye week proved to be a good one for recovery. The veteran receiver played over 80 percent of the team's snaps in three of the opening four games to start this season and should slide right back into that No. 2 WR role on the Chiefs in Week 11 against the Raiders.

Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (hamstring) will play this week against the Raiders.

NFL Network's James Palmer said Watkins is "set to return" after a multi-week absence. If he's a full go against Vegas, Demarcus Robinson should remain on fantasy benches and Mecole Hardman should be downgraded. Watkins was the clear-cut No. 2 receivers for KC before his severe hamstring injury in early October.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) was downgraded to "limited" in Thursday's practice.

Not what you want to see, though this is probably just the Chiefs managing Watkins' reps following his long layoff. NFL Network's James Palmer has reported Watkins is "set to return." With Mecole Hardman still on the COVID-19 list, Watkins will have some WR3 appeal for what should be a high-scoring affair with the Raiders. That is, of course, provided he plays. Today's "limited" session necessitates a Friday double-check.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) is questionable for Week 11 against the Raiders.

Watkins was downgraded to limited participation at both Thursday's and Friday's practices. With Mecole Hardman still on the team's COVID list, it's possible Demarcus Robinson and Byron Pringle are both thrust into Kansas City's starting lineup by default. Fantasy players should consider Watkins a sturdy WR3 if he's available while Hardman simultaneously remains sidelined.

Sammy Watkins (calf, hamstring) was ruled out for Week 11 against the Raiders.

Watkins was downgraded after an in-practice injury during the week coming out of the bye. His status for Week 12 and beyond is unknown, but he's flashed WR3/4 appeal when fully healthy for those with deeper fantasy bench spots. The Chiefs activated Mecole Hardman, who has been operating as the No. 2 or No. 3 receiver without Watkins, from the COVID-19 list ahead of Sunday Night Football.

Sammy Watkins (calf, hamstring) practiced in full Wednesday.

Watkins has been out since Week 5 with various nicks and dings. He's looking to make it back this week against the Bucs. Watkins' return would be fantasy hits to Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson behind Tyreek Hill.

Sammy Watkins (hamstring) will play in Week 12 against the Buccaneers.

It will be Watkins' first game action since Week 5. He's flashed WR3/4 appeal when fully healthy, although he averaged only 8.0 fantasy points per game in four appearances since Week 1. His return still ultimately hurts Mecole Hardman's and Demarcus Robinson's outlooks against Tampa Bay.

DFS Slant:

With at leats seven targets from Patrick Mahomes in three of his four complete games this season, Watkins is a DFS salary saver with decent upside against Tampa this week. Watkins is a potentially unique stack alongside Mahomes in what could turn into a high scoring affair.

Ya. I’m starting him in my flex. TB will most likely stuff the run.

Sammy Watkins caught 4-of-7 targets for 38 yards in the Chiefs' Week 12 win over the Bucs.

Watkins' seven targets were third on the team behind Tyreek Hill (15) and Travis Kelce (8) in his first action since Week 5 after battling leg injuries. Watkins is the third option in this passing game, but he's a distant one and will be a WR3/4 next week against the Broncos.

Mr. Glass strikes again.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport Sammy Watkins suffered a calf injury in Kansas City's Week 16 win over the Falcons.

Coach Andy Reid already said a majority of the team's starters will rest in Week 17, giving Watkins the season finale and Kansas City's first round bye to heal before practicing again. He's expected to return for the Divisional Round given the extended break.

I really hate the non standard thread titles when it's a guy I own and the thread title just reminds you of how much of a disappointment the guy had been.  I'm looking at you Bishop Sankey the best RB in the Draft!!!!!

Sammy Watkins (calf) did not practice on Wednesday.

Watkins injured his calf in Week 16 and didn't play in the season finale with the Chiefs' starters resting. Wednesday was our first look at how serious his calf injury is, and it appears that his status is up in the air. Watkins will need to get in a limited practice by Friday to have a chance of playing against the Browns. If he's out, Mecole Hardman would join Tyreek Hill and Demarcus Robinson in three-receiver sets with Byron Pringle also being an option. Watkins' injuries are beginning to really pile up.

Sammy Watkins (calf) did not practice Thursday.

Watkins' status for the Chiefs' Divisional Round clash with the Browns is looking bleaker every day. He suffered the calf injury and was rested -- along with most KC starters -- in Week 17. Without a limited practice on Friday, Watkins will be hard pressed to suit up against Cleveland. That would open up snaps and targets for Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman. Robinson averaged five targets in games where Watkins was sidelined while Hardman averaged 3.17 targets.

Sammy Watkins (calf) is out for the Divisional Round against the Browns.

Watkins was injured in the Week 16 win, and the two weeks off still wasn't enough to get him ready. He didn't practice at all this week. It'll be Mecole Hardman, Demarcus Robinson, and Byron Pringle soaking up snaps behind Tyreek Hill.

Jan 15, 2021, 2:35 PM ET

Sammy Watkins (calf) is questionable for the Conference Championship game against the Bills.

Watkins is expected to play given that he participated in every practice throughout the week. Although he failed to eclipse 65 receiving yards in any game following his two-touchdown performance in Week 1, Watkins was leaned on as the preferred option in last year's Super Bowl run for 14/288/1 over Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson. It could be all for naught if the Bills invite the Chiefs to run the ball with another heavy dose of two-high safeties, but this news at least ensures Watkins is active as the team's No. 2 wide receiver on Sunday.
