***OFFICIAL*** Punk/ Hardcore Music Thread (1 Viewer)

I saw them a few weeks back, they put on an AWESOME show.  I am a fan now, and I am totally sweet on Aimee Interrupter
Just got tickets to see them next month!

Going to see the Sloppy Seconds Friday night. Stoked on that. They were one of the best shows I saw in college. 17yrs ago.... So much fun. Hope they still have it in them.

I started playing guitar in mid August. Started with learning chords, scales etc.

Last week I said, im going to learn some punk songs. Was able to learn Hope, Young til I die and Minor Threat

all on my 30 min lunch break. These songs are so simple.

The next day I went with American Jesus and I dont want to hear it.

Fun stuff.

Also went on a cruise around NYC watching Murphys Law and H2O play. That was fun too

What did you play in your band?

I need to pick the guitar back up. I was never patient enough to learn more than the 2 finger power chord. But that got me some Ramones songs and terrible originals. I still don't think I have the joints/flexibility to really keep at guitar. My hands hurt after an hr of video games these days.

The Distillers are getting back together to do a bunch of shows across the U.S. They're coming my way. I think it's a must-see, really.

eta* Sold out within four hours and I missed the window. Damn. Now I'm looking at like 70-100 bucks to see The Distillers -- even though nothing has been listed in the secondary market yet, I bet that's what it is.

Pop punk isn't my scene, but I thought of some you guys ( @rockaction) when I saw this at our local African bagel shop
Thanks for the thought.

Oh my. Pop Punk High.

Uhhh...

I'm almost game, though. Okay, I'm with it. I will say I always liked my pop-punk with some weird edge. For example, I was just listening to the Mr. T Experience last night. The Queers were also a favorite of mine. Somehow, even though it's pop punk, "We'd Have A Riot Doing Heroin" has a bit on an edge to it.

The modern stuff just leaves me a bit flat, if nostalgic.

It's funny how we think of this board even when we leave it. I can't listen to the Idles or Parquet Courts without thinking of El Floppo. The Idles is my album of the year, too.*

Acer FC's Rancid story about Lars on the bus getting weirdly anti-semitic almost ruins the listening experience for me.

I guess we just take away things from each other that we're not soon to forget.

eta* Unless RTJ3 is considered this year. Then that wins.

Speaking of Pop Punk. I am super super stoked that The Lillingtons are in town next Monday at a little club. You down, rockaction?

Wow. I don't know. Maybe. I just listened to their new one. Found out about from PunkNews and the other trades. They said they're into metal now. Their new stuff is good, but slowed down.

Hit me up via PM, Sebowski. I'll get back to you in enough time to plan for sure.

By the way, the Quicksand show was pretty good, but nothing worth going out of one's way for. Nice set, boring-### crowd.

Yeah that new album is weird. Kind of new wavy for me. I surprised to hear them call it metal influenced over new wave. It's growing on me, but I hope they play the old stuff. Funny enough I was at the venue they're playing last night for a friend's metal band and I'm going back to the spot Tuesday for the Toasters. 3 shows at The Soda Bar inside of 10 days.

Lots of people are anti Semitic. Can let that get in the way of good music. Not talking skrewdriver, but Rancid is fine with me.

Yeah Acer, I gathered that. I just can't forget the story. I also can't forget the communism, either, even though the music is great. I don't want to put words into your mouth. They're mine, and mine solamente.

My broader point was that stories from the board color our lives at times. That's all. I still will never forget Rancid as a great band who probably put out one of the greatest punk/crossover pop albums of the nineties.

The Smoking Popes are blowing up my Spotify right now. Their live '98 is pretty good. @Sebowski, that might be a more ambitious date to meet up. They play the Soda Bar on the 28th of April. That sounds fun. I don't even know what the Soda Bar is, actually. I'm so stuck in T-Mec.

Nah. You've got some wires crossed. They play on January 29th with the Bombpops. https://www.ticketfly.com/event/1609431-lillingtons-san-diego/

It is pretty far for you. City Heights. Just South of the 8 between the 15 and the 805. Not LA far though. I've made that drive for some shows. Most notably for here was the Riverdales and Screeching Weasel reunion shows. Worked till 7pm, drove up for Riverdales, drove back, worked till 7pm, drove up for Weasel, luckily a friend drove that leg back.

Yeah, I gotcha. I was talking about the Popes in April. Loose pronoun. The Lillingtons play next Monday, I think. Regardless, the drives aren't too bad. I'll PM you if something breaks.

Ah. Gotcha. I'm an idiot. Read your post wrong. It is a pretty small venue. Leads to some interesting times if it's too crowded.

How were the Riverdales? They're probably the most interesting of pop punk bands left for me, other than Mr. T Experience and The Queers.

The Riverdales can write a tune and destroy it, that's for sure.

They were incredible. One of my favorite shows of all time. I am a huge fan though and I was so excited about it. That album they put out for the reunion is so awesome too, Tarantula. I was so pissed when Ben went all Ben and punched that girl insuring Vapid would never play with him again, and that I wouldn't really feel all that comfortable giving him my money either. Though I did go to one more Weasel show a couple years later. Skipped others and will skip any more that come my way. Probably.

BTW, Jughead's book is really awesome. To tie this thread back together, he is telling/not-quite-narrating the Screeching Weasel story while on tour with the Lillingtons.

Awesome.

By the way, here are my favorite ten Riverdales songs from their first three albums. I'm not including singles, nor am I including the last two. Ben said he'd hang 'em up after three albums, because anything after three turned into self-parody. Seriously, he promised that. I humbly submit a playlist:

1) Fun Tonight (The Rev makes this song)

2) Outta Sight (A dedication)

3) Last Stop Tokyo (mid-tempo awesomeness)

4) Riverdale Stomp (anthem)

5) Mental ####### (okay, the title, but a blistering song)

6) A.W.O.M.

7) Wait It Out

8) I Don't Wanna Go To The Party

9) Make Way

10) Hampton Beach (grew up in the NE, this makes sense - a Queers homage and a closer)

Like School2. I think you posted Celtic in the dead rock stars draft, actually. When you got in that fight with Flop or something? I dunno.
okaaaayyyyy ... didn't realize you were the gatekeeper up in here

anyways, the Rumjacks belong in this thread, previous spotlighting be damned

LOL. No gatekeeper. I just love this thread. I get bored, man. Love giving my own criticism of the critics' critical musings.

And the songs are -- well they're ten times better than mine most times, and that's not false humility.

Love getting criticism from other people.

You know I'm smiling, my friend.

I posted about it in the metal thread, but nobody had ever heard of the following bands: I'm wondering if anybody has any opinions about Touché Amore and La Dispute, two post-hardcore acts often lumped in with each other.

I might go see them in LA, but tickets are pretty expensive. If anyone follows the board, that's why I took out the ticket thread.

La Dispute could be the most lyrically dense band I've heard in a long time, and the most gut-wrenchingly emotional that I've ever heard, period.

Here are two examples:

Touche Amore - Flowers and You

La Dispute - King Park

Soda Bar is way closer than LA, by the btw.

Heh. Yeah. By about twenty minutes for me (I live right by Pechanga Casino. Like, I can walk there if need be). I'm just a little more excited to see La Dispute than anybody in a long time. I love me some post-hardcore. It's a balancing act and limited funds, so I basically get a show or two. Right now the Distillers are playing Santa Ana and The Casbah. That's my show of choice, but tickets are three hundred on Craigslist and the one that isn't is talking about changing names at will call and ####. I dunno...

I'm getting old, too. Might as well just buy pretty t-shirts and forget it. You still seeing the Lillingtons?

Wow. Thought Distillers were too big for the Casbah. I never really dove in to them.

Yeah, I'm all in for the Lillingtons. Most excited about that show then any show since the last time I saw them in Brooklyn 3 years ago. I just hope they don't at the new album which I'm sure they will.

The Distillers are too big for The Casbah. And The Observatory. They sold out in under half a minute, I hear. There's no secondary market for tickets for those two shows, either. It's...something is weird. They may be essentially private shows or something. Maybe they misgauged it, or were trying to gauge the interest for further touring and albums, etc. But yeah, Sing Sing Death House is one of my favorite punk albums of all time, period. I didn't dive in either -- it sort of grabbed me. I think Tim Armstrong did indeed, despite this being a little sexist, have a lot to do with what they were writing and it all hit a sweet spot of him, Brode Dalle, and others.

As for the Lillingtons, I've tried to read up. I think most people have come away satisfied from their shows from what I've read. I think it's a healthy mix of old and new. You're going to get new stuff, but that's par for the course. My hesitation is that they've gotten into the occult and dark metal, as PunkNews had their promo photos all with pentagrams and stuff and a corresponding interview. Big deal you say? Maybe not. But yeah, I don't want to drive an hour and pay for parking, beer, etc. and wind up with some sort of weird-assed #### on my hands.

/end...well that's the last of it

La Dispute!

Actually I think I may know what's up with the Distillers show. ABC/cops shut down the observatory for a bunch of ####. I've heard different versions of the stories ranging from underage drinking, drug deals, and fights. I was just wondering where all the bands they booked would end up. Figured they would just skip SD at that point, but I guess Casbah scooped some even though they'd normally be too small. Belly Up was probably booked. I don't think Observatory is too small for the Distillers. In the past few months I saw Cake, Flaming Lips, and X there.

Oh, I see. I was talking Observatory more towards LA, though. Santa Ana. That sold out briskly, too, and there's no secondary market for tickets, really. I just think the Distillers grew in stature from what they might have thought. They didn't occur to me until around the late aughts as a classically great band. By then, they'd broken up.

But that makes sense to book the Casbah in light of Observatory North Park closing. How was X? Did Exene play with John Doe? Because that sounds huge.

first time I saw that Doyle was gonna be present - the FB posts just mentioned Jerry and Glenn (who had the biggest beefs to settle between them) - and, not for nuttin' - every time i see "ORIGINAL LINEUP!!1!11!!1!" i keep hoping to see Bobby Steele on guitar ... i love me some Doyle, but Bobby is as great a punk guitarist as ever strummed - Undead!

Dear God, that's a show.  Astoria, Queens rules! It rules planet Earth...alright!
