How many of you smoke pot? Legally, or otherwise?

I have never smoked pot in my life and I am 42.  None of my friends growing up smoked pot that I know about so I was never around it.  I have also never smoked a cigarette or chewed tobacco.   The latter being odd since I played baseball until age 28.

Please don't consider this an adversarial question but how do you formulate an opinion on weed legalization without ever having tried it? (I honestly don't know if you even if have one, it's just a question that occurs to me whenever I'm in a discussion with a non-experimenter) TIA

Went with a boundless CFX  $179.  Has some good reviews so I ordered it.  I almost bought the HAZE 3 but it was like $250 and Im hoping the Boundless will be adequate.

This came in the mail yesterday.  I broke it in last night and overdid it.  I was nearly comatose, not that I'm complaining.  It will definitely take some getting used to.  I will scale it back tonight and see how that works.  First time I have ever used a vape.

I don't think rape should be legal but I've never tried it.

That is a fair question.  I am not a huge advocate either way on it but I would prefer it stay illegal because it smells like crap to me and it seems very unhealthy to me.

Well, since you personally don't like it and have an unsubstantiated bias against it health wise, let's absolutely deny other adults the right to make an informed choice for themselves!

That's an uncharacteristically lousy analogy or maybe I phrased my question poorly. Nobody, at least in this forum and at least not yet, is advocating that we try rape before judging its merit. What I'm trying to ascertain is the criteria one uses to form an opinion about legalization without ever having experienced the effects of cannabis.

I appreciate the honest answer and I won't belabor the obvious but we could probably generate about a thousand posts in here about why those aren't very effective arguments.

I think most non-users realize that pot makes you feel good.  I'm not sure it's important to experience the precise way it makes you feel good before weighing the pros and cons of legalization.

"Important" is debatable but the first question I ask someone who opines to me that they think pot ought to remain illegal is "how did it make you feel when you tried it?"  I think the absence of experience makes one miss a vital piece of the puzzle.

It's fun and interesting to me. An opponent's arguments better be especially sharp if he has no personal experience with it and so far I haven't seen hardly any of those.

The arguments against pot legalization are just bad arguments, whether or not the person has tried it.

I mean, the big difference here is that trying rape results in a victim.

Smoking weed does not.

I think there's a fundamental difference in the weed supply chain vs. harder drugs in terms of potential victims. My thinking  here being unlike harder drugs such as cocaine, heroin, etc. weed can be homegrown (e.g., doesn't need to be cooked in the middle of the rain forest with a gigantic lab). No, cartel sourced weed is not homegrown and has a garbage rep for a reason. Homegrown weed comes from someone who cares for it and sources it to you through connections, and is of much higher quality. Dirt weed and harder drugs have to come from outside the US where the stakes are higher to get the products into the US. With higher stakes comes higher profit, and with a higher profit motive comes higher probability of related crime, violence and collateral damage.

I've always thought the laws against drugs are not so much against the drug itself, but to punish the user for driving the demand that creates the supply chain and assumed related collateral damage from territory wars, etc. Homegrown weed eliminates a lot of that, still territory wars possibly with cartels for a big enough operation, but on a small scale would eliminate all of the above concerns related to importing harder drugs. I liken getting imprisoned for possession of harder drugs to possessing child porn. No, you didn't technically touch the child yourself, or in this instance your possession and usage of the drug doesn't hurt anyone directly. But, you created a demand for the people who did to create the picture or video you're serving time for possessing in the case of child porn, same for any violence incurred in the drug trade import supply chain.

Well, I have 2 kids about to become teenagers.  Keeping it illegal would make it harder for them to get a hold of and yes, smoking anything is not doing your body any favors.   My experience has been that people who smoke pot are not the type of people I would like to hang out with.

Weed is easier to get than alcohol for kids. FYI

Quit what?  I am not offended if you don't like my opinion.   If the country thought like you do pot would be legal.  Move to Colorado?

How do you figure? The reason it's easier to get now than alcohol, is precisely because it's illegal. There are no regulations. The dealers don't check IDs.

When it becomes legal, the average joe schmoe buying it will stop buying from dealers, and buy from stores. Where they have a better selection/quality/pricing.

This is going to force dealers to go legit or go out of business.

You may be right.  I'm just going from my own experience.   I have never had someone ask me if I wanted to buy weed and I would of had no idea who to ask to find out where to buy it.  If legal, it is fairly obvious where you could go to buy it.

Well, it will be eventually. Ohio is the 25th state to legalize medicinal marijuana, so we're up to half.  That's just in the last twenty years, with most of them being fairly recent.  There are more states than just Colorado where it's recreationally legal, and they seem to be doing just fine.  Hell, it's basically legal in the capital of this country now.  But there are still a lot of people like you (no offense) who buy in to the negative stigma of the plant.  Particularly in the south, unfortunately. :kicksrock:

Just curious, if one of your reasons for wanting it to be illegal is due to the smell of it, do you think cigarettes should be illegal? Personally I think that smell is way worse.

In your opinion should adults be allowed to smoke marijuana in the privacy of their own homes where you don't have to smell it?

You don't want to have this debate in this thread, trust me. The arguments against legalization have been systematically shredded and the country is moving inexorably towards legalization.

You have already admitted to knowing nothing about this subject. Now you are looking obtuse.

it couldn't get easier. Hell, I'm concerned that once it's fully legal it will be more of a pain for me - I mean, it's 2016 and I still can't buy a six pack before noon on Sunday and as of a couple years ago couldn't buy alcohol at all on Sunday at any time.

you must be one of those super liberals who feels that government should dictate peoples private lives I suppose.

I could care less if people smoke pot in the privacy of their own homes.  As long as it doesn't affect their driving skills.  Cigarettes smell nasty too.

Oh, so you mean a total hypocrite then?

Small govt! (Except where I want it to intrude due to personal and uninformed reasons at that)

Personal liberty! (Well, at least for things I'm ok with. The rest be damned).

got ya.

Prolly asked before but what HS?  You can PM me....I'm sure we know some common folks.

I have never tried pot, but was talking with my HR person and she was telling me how her husband smoked regularly but she has also never tried it.

She suggested I come over some time and we could smoke up for the first time together.

Although I have no experience, something tells me this is a very bad idea.

(Still illegal here)
