WR Amari Cooper, CLE (5 Viewers)

Isn't plantar fasciaitis commonly an overuse injury?
Yes. So if he was in shape prior to camp he wouldnt be over using.

Chances for these kinds of injuries peek after about 2 weeks of starting new activities. The fact that he got it to begin with makes me question what kind of shape he was prior to camp; if hes in shape his body is used to the activity already and the chance of an overuse injury is very small

Cooper has always been a hard worker even when he was unhappy in Oakland.  I doubt he showed up to camp out of shape.

Plantar fasciitis sucks, but I had it years ago and went away almost immediately after I got some good inserts. Of course, I was not an athlete who needed my feet in good condition to play sports, so not quite the same thing, but it is easily treatable, depending on how bad it is.

I think the idea that this came from him being lazy is the opposite of the truth here. It is most likely he overworked it or perhaps has a foot shape makes him more at-risk for this issue.

It is not easily treatable if you have a bad case of it.  Terrible freaking injury man.

I agree with this.  I had this "disease" and it cut 6 months out of my life pursuing a sport I wanted to learn.  It is totally and overuse injury, and high arches are prone, like mine.  Causes the plantar fascia to stretch and fray with movement.  Anyhow NOT being lazy is how I got it - practicing way too much, but I will concede I was just clear of my twneties and not stretching/rolling it out enough on my calves and hammies.  Wound up with tendonitis all over my feet from compensating movements, and ultimately in a walking boot for a couple months.  There is a large spectrum of how bad it can be... but if it is bad, then all bets are off.

I have Amari on a lot of teams and will be watching closely from a FF perspective.

I had plantar fasciitis in both feet. My specialist told me excessive running is the most common cause (but not the only one.)

Most of my friends who’ve had it are marathoners who run 50-80 miles a week. At one point a few years ago there were like 4 of us walking around the office in a boot from the same injury.

Last I read he doesn’t  have plantar fasciitis
You’re right, 3 days ago BR was saying pf. NFL.com and a few others now reporting it as heel strain. Regardless, this first surfaced two weeks ago & it’s def a concern.

I just hate uncertainty at the 3rd/4th round turn so I’ll probably avoid. But my rankings always had him behind players ECR had higher before this weeks reports (Hilton, Diggs, Edelman, Cooks.) Full PPR.

Even if he is a go, he’s just too damn streaky for me.

From PFF Scott Barrett’s awesome “96 stats” article:

2A. Including the postseason (11 total games), Cooper averaged 17.9 fantasy points per game with Dallas last season, which would have ranked 10th-best last year.

2B. Over the past two seasons, Cooper has as many games (seven) with 80-plus receiving yards as he does games of 10 or fewer receiving yards.

2C. In 2017, Cooper scored 52% of his fantasy points in just three games (most). In 2018, Cooper scored 52% of his fantasy points in just three games (most).

2D. This means that the other 79% of the time you were starting him he was averaging just 5.5 (2017) and 7.0 (2018) fantasy points per game. Those numbers would have ranked outside of the top-75 in both seasons.

2E. Of 72 qualifying receivers since 2015, Jason Witten ranks best in targets per dropped pass (54.4), while Cooper ranks worst (11.9).

I wouldn't want Cooper as my WR1, but IMO he makes a great WR2.  His boom weeks can go a long way to winning your matchup.

I don't think anyone would be drafting him as a #1.

He’s being drafted around wr 10 or 11 so unless you draft a wr in round 1 that’s exactly what he is
He is my WR1 and I am fine with that because I have 3 WR2s.  And while I don't expect it, it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he were the best WR in all of NFL next year.  He is capable.

I have a feeling I'll be staring right at him at the 2/3 turn in a 10 man after picking first.  Especially with the questions around Allen, Brown, Hilton...pretty sure I'd pull the trigger there.  I draft tomorrow night so don't expect any clarity with those other guys.

What's the question around K.Allen?

Always loved Johnson, people always let him fall too far, because of his streakiness. Cooper would be very fortunate to have a run like he did 03-07.
4 games as the wr1 for the week and 12 games as a wr5, if healthy... Hard pass

I am starting to fade all Cowboys going into my draft -- I do believe Zeke will play, and Cooper will play somewhere in between his level of last year and his level with the Raiders (discounting a little based on unknown on the severity of his plantar fasciitis), but there is too much risk and variance overall, so will be looking at other options than Dak, Cooper, Zeke, et al based on that risk and let some other GM worry about how this pans out.

Hilton > Allen > brown > cooper

Hilton isn't hurt and there's nothing wrong with him directly.  He has done well enough without luck that the floor is higher than the others, and brissett is an above average backup.   It's pretty close to a dream situation for him - good o line to get him time, good but not great run game and no other good wide receivers competing for targets.

Allen isn't seriously hurt and should be back soon. It's always possible he misses time, but we know what he is when he plays. The Gordon holdout may tilt them a little more towards the pass.

Brown has me concerned, but his ceiling is wr1 overall.  He's done it before - more than once - but the team change puts him clearly third of the 3 for me even without the foot thing and weird behavior. I like him a little more in a ten team league because you need stud talent and you have a little more wiggle room if you miss, but i wouldn't move him over Hilton and don't personally prefer him over Allen.

Cooper was already a little overrated before the plantar fasciitis. He had a lot of meh games and a couple huge ones.  His bad games were better in Dallas than Oakland but he still profiles more as a good wr2 than a low wr1. Add an injury, contract situations for both him and his qb, and the possibility that the offense changes completely without zeke, with Witten back, and with young guys potentially emerging and I'm not going to have a lot of cooper shares at his current price.

Cooper isn't going to be a WR1 this year, but I don't think he was prior to the injury. He has a lot of boom/bust games, but if you actually watch his games there are so many times that he's wide open and the ball doesn't come his way, especially when he was in Oakland. I think that Cooper could still be a top 10 WR in this league, but right now he's still too much of a boom/bust prospect to rely upon week to week. I don't think that having Dak as a QB will affect his game as much as having Kellen Moore at OC. I'm hopeful that he can even out his play and decrease the variability throughout the season.

I own Cooper in Dynasty, and his value could be at the best point to sell, but I'm going to hold and hope that his situation continues to improve. He's still a young WR and has lots of opportunity to grow and improve.

Right now I have Cooper around WR15. If we hear worse things about his foot I might move him down to 20 and have him around AJ Green.

Cowboys WR Amari Cooper expected to be out until season opener with plantar fasciitis

He has elite quickness and route running.....Derek Carr, and the O line was the issue in Oakland.....if you watch the film, Carr is super squirrelly in the pocket most of the time.  I think with Dallas' better line and better all around offensive weapons, he can be a top 10 WR for sure, but the foot......especially for a guy who relies heavily on quickness and precise routes

Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones characterized Amari Cooper's foot injury as "more of a muscle strain."

We've heard Cooper's injury described a number of different ways—at one time it was thought to be plantar fasciitis while NFL Network's Ian Rapoport referred to it as a "strained heel." Whatever it is, the injury is still bothering him, though Jones isn't ready to press the panic button yet. "I the preseason you’re being ultra, ultra conservative," said Jones, who confirmed Cooper won't participate in next week's preseason finale against Tampa Bay. If Cooper is absent or limited to start the year, it would open up targets for Michael Gallup and Randall Cobb, among others.

Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Amari Cooper (foot) is "on schedule" to play in Week 1.

Cooper has remained confident he'll play in Dallas' season opener. Despite being able to run at full speed, his ongoing muscle strain has reportedly impacted his ability to cut in and out of his routes. Cowboys executive VP Stephen Jones said the team would be "ultra conservative" in how Cooper's handled (which means missed practices and preseason games), but Dallas' stud wideout is fully expected to be on the field against the Giants in Week 1. He'll garner WR1 status to open the year.

Garrett just confirmed Amari Cooper will practice today.

I feel like Cooper went a full round lower than he should have because of this foot scare.

The whole time AC said it wasn’t a big deal, that he could play through it but it was getting better & he expected to be 100% by the time the season started.

We’re still not even sure what it was, but latest reports were a “muscle strain” and not  plantar fasciitis - and now here we are a week out & he's going to practice.

this all reeked of “top player being held out to preserve him” and not “omg the sky is falling”.

After get got to the cowboys last season, cooper’s production soared. His numbers scaled out to a full season are like 100/1400/14

not a bad 3rd round pick for those who were bold enough to take a chance.

Hopefully reports are positive after practice - if he gets through the week ok he could be the steal of a lot of drafts.

I don't think I'll ever roster this guy. :shrugs:
To each their own. He played through this same “injury” in college. Sounds pretty minor.

and if you check his numbers after the trade to DAL he could easily be top 8 or better this year.

i avoided him in Oakland because I try to avoid Raiders in general.

as a 49er fan it pains me to stump for a Cowboy, but Amari Cooper is a bargain as a late 3rd rounder.

Same here, though I couldn't pass on Jacobs this year. And I try to avoid guys in Dallas, too, unless they've got definitively carved-out roles. I could see myself taking Cooper, but there's always somebody ahead of me who picks him or in he's a tier of guys where he's available along with somebody I like better. That's just how it's been since he came into the league. I have no animus against him or anything like that. Hey, maybe this will be our year.

Yeah, I was a little surprised he fell to 3.08

Especially with 1/3 of my league Raiders fans.

my plan was to take a RB there. But with most of the teams at the turn needing WRs, a DAL honk picking 3.09, and at least 5 RBs I liked, I felt like he was the last potentially WR1 left. I ended up getting the RBs I wanted anyway, which was pretty fortunate.

The foot thing spooked a lot of people, but for some reason i just didn’t feel like it was a big deal. I’ve been burned by those hunches before of course.

FWIW I like Jacobs a lot this year & would have taken him if he made it back.

Good luck with your raider! May Gruden be more competent than he appears. 👍🏼

I've been fairly worried, because his value is directly tied to quickness and route running....a foot injury for a guy like him is no bueno.....I'm definitely going to scoop him up if hes there when it makes sense.....he is a new man in Dallas with a QB who understands how to get him the ball consistently.

Reportedly had a similar strain in college. Played through it. AC’s value dropped a full round in ADP because of (erroneous)  plantar fasciitis report.

Cooper said the whole time he’d be ready & that he could play through it.

I realize sometimes players lie or are self-deluding, but this reeked of a way to keep a star player out of harm’s way for the preseason.

Maybe he did have a little foot strain. Reportedly it wasn’t a big deal. If his foot is right he’s in for a monster season. Especially if the other receiving weapons in Dallas develop as anticipated by many.
