I am watching every Bond movie: please kill me (1 Viewer)

Honestly after these last two movies I'm a little surprised the franchise survived.
They had made so much money for the first 4-5 movies that they bought themselves a minimum of 10 more on the hopes there would be more hits.. and oh there are.

Man with Golden Gun is one of those love/hate movies... either Christopher Lee, Nik Nak, and the gorgeous broad in the bikini will have you loving it, or you'll think it's an abomination.

Then you'll get one of the 2-3 best movies in the franchise with The Spy Who Loved Me

But until Goldeneye I really think there are only two great scripts... Spy Who Loved Me and For Your Eyes Only
Agreed.

But I have a huge guilty pleasure with Moonraker. I love that movie for a lot of little reasons.

Man With The Golden Gun is my favorite Moore Bond film. It's one of the few times Moore got the badass part of Bond down. Plus I'm a huge Christopher Lee fan.

It's always one of the lowest rated and maybe it's just my youthful memory talking but I loved Octo##### and I don't care who knows it.

That felt really therapeutic to say out loud.
Tons of eye candy in this one.

PSA: do not look for recent pics of Kristina Wayborn. :bag: oof

I always liked Lee as Dracula.

Odd that his Bond character only used one bullet but for some reason had an extra nipple.
Like a lot of 007 movies, the first half of this script is pretty solid. There's some mystery and tension as the Rodge does some spywork to track Scaramanga down. But the second half of the movie goes completely off the rails. For some reason, the screenwriters introduce the solar gadget as a plot device but they can't decide whether it's a death ray or the solution to the world's energy problems. It's also not clear what Lee wants to do with it; he's more of a mercenary than a megalomaniac like Blofeld. There's no clear direction from the solar gizmo to the final shootout so the filmmakers throw a kitchen sink full of idiot supporting characters and action set pieces to distract the audience from this fact.

For me, Connery was the best, followed by Craig. Then a tier of Dalton and Moore. I like Moore better than most. He was campy, but my favorite is when he got serious in For Your Eyes Only. That movie is seriously underrated. Didn't like OHMSS at all and I think Brosnan is very overrated. I know that everyone thinks he "should" have been a great Bond, but I think he blows it. The movies are pretty ridiculous as well. Craig has saved the franchise, in my opinion. I also like QOS better than most people, although it's clearly the worst of the three Craigs.
Brosnan and those scripts killed this franchise for me. Craig revived what I once thought was dead to me.

This would lead me to have a similar discussion that we've had about the best Bonds. I think Lee is by far the GOAT when it comes to Dracula. The only other performance I've seen that comes close is (and don't laugh) Jack Palance's TV version. That was actually really good. Some of the more recent ones like Langella, Oldman and whatever the hell that was in Blade 3 were terrible in my opinion.

I always thought Lugosi was too campy and stagey. Not enough menace. Lee had it all. He's the Sean Connery of Dracula performances.

So do I...Holly Goodhead.

Lana Wood...never understood why it always seemed like it was a chore for her to smile...but DAMN if she didn't have knockers that just would not be denied.

If Brosnan hadn't gotten Goldeneye he would have had just a dreadful run of scripts.

I walked out of Die Another Day and decided I thought I was pretty much done with the franchise... then time passed, Casino Royale was always one i'd wanted to see seriously done as a Bond movie, and Craig killed it and I was back.

And that's the Bond franchise... they'll knock you down a few times, but then they will release a great one and reel you back in. Craig's second outing was really a bad flick... but then Skyfall was one of the more memorable ones.

The Bond franchise has been a cash cow and almost a license to print money. Sadly, making a good script or great movie at times really didn't matter.

Movie, production cost, global box office (in millions) . . . (and this does not include any other revenue from merchandising, movie rights, product placement, DVDs, etc.):

Agreed. I only liked two of Brosnan's Bond flicks. His first (Goldeneye) and his last (Die Another Day). The middle two were bunk and totally forgettable.

wow, you liked Die Another Day? I guess there has to be someone

I walked out of Die Another Day
I'll watch anything Halle Berry is in until the proper conclusion.

LOL one of the few I guess.

Rosamund Pike

The invisible snow car or whatever was pretty out there even for a Bond film but I liked Die Another Day too.
I just loved the camp and it really was the first one in a long time to try and recapture the classic bond action and adventure and have a compelling villain. Halle Berry was superbly hot in this movie.

Outside of those, I can't understand how anyone legitimately likes any of the 70s+80s Bond movies outside of pure nostalgia.

As far as the 70's and 80's Bond movies the only ones I love are

1) The Spy Who Loved Me

2) Moonraker

3) For Your Eyes Only

4) The Man With The Golden Gun

Diamonds Are Forever is garbage (I will watch it when I get to it in my marathon as with the rest of this group)

Live and Let Die is garbage and a black eye on the series with it's blaxplotation everywhere.

Never Say Never Again is a glorified Thunderball remake and Connery should have never made this (guess they paid him a crap load and if you notice the theme is not present because it is not made by United Artist who own the rights to the theme song).

A View To A Kill - It's decent and Walkin is a great villain. Grace Jones is bizarre in a good way. But a below average Bond flick.

Octo##### - is utterly forgettable.

The Living Daylights - Decent, not horrible.

License To Kill - Not that bad. But Dalton never took to the role.

I like the opening scene in Diamonds Are Forever with Bond avenging his wife's death from Majesty. Other than that it's pretty hokey but it's still Connery as Bond which means by definition it's still all kinds of awesome.

no.

That movie and "never say never again" are horrible... pure dreck.

Connery is stellar in his other 4 outings and From Russia With Love is probably my #2 overall bond after Spy Who Loved Me.

For me, Connery as Bond is like pizza. Even if it isn't all that great it's still pizza which is pretty darn good.

Never Say Never Again is like two-day old Totino's Party Pizza.

Even that is better than that movie.

I'll sift through two-day old pizza to get to Barbara Carrera.

Barbara Carrera's presence in any film is best described by a line from Lone Wolf McQuade - "How'd you like to bite that in the butt, develop lockjaw and be dragged away to death?"

I actually like Dalton. The first Bond film I ever saw was Living Daylights. I was only 7 or 8 at the time but it was awesome to me with the ski chase and explosions and such.

I think Dalton played the part well, and I do generally like the Living Daylights... License to Kill is a pretty solid combination of total cheese with Wayne Newton and some of the more gruesome scenes in the series with Felix Leiter getting chewed up by sharks (spoiler alert).

Goldeneye was written for DAlton and he would have NAILED it and been a beloved Bond actor if he'd gotten that script rather than an afterthought.

There is something to be said for the first Bond you see being your favorite or ranked higher than they should be. That's the way I am with Moore.

My first was Connery but Craig is really gaining on him for me.

My first bond movie I can remember seeing was Moonraker... so Moore was the Bond I knew

I liked Dalton in the role. He had the physicality and presence to play it.
I wouldn't be surprised if Craig said Dalton influenced him with his portrayal. I think Craig perfected what Dalton was going for.
I think this is pretty accurate. I think if Dalton had the scripts and the modern tech that Craig has that he could've produced a similar result... albeit I think Craig has slightly better comedic timing.

Actually as I recall Craig has said Connery was his main influence. And Connery really seems to love what Craig is doing with the character. Connery called Moore's Bond a parody.

That was my second after The Spy Who Loved Me. Those two movies go hand in hand with Jaws gluing them together.

Moonraker is cheesy Bond goodness.

Agree with Connery about that.

As far as what Craig said I don't doubt Connery was an influence. He has to be for everyone who plays the role. But I think much of what Craig is doing is what Dalton was going for. I definitely could be wrong but I could see Craig possibly watching those films and seeing things Dalton did that he could possibly do better (which I think he has). It wouldn't have been very popular if Craig said when he took the role that Dalton had influenced him. :) Not like many Bond fans were crazy about Dalton.

I never got the Dalton dislike personally. And yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he looked at what Dalton was going for and took parts.

I have also read that Craig wants to get some of the humor back into the series. Not to Mooresian levels but more than what they have had so far.

Yeah I definitely think Craig has a much better feel for the sly type of humor that Connery mastered. Dalton's approach was heavy on the seriousness. Then Brosnan came and tried to get closer to Moore but not full-out camp which I think worked well for him for the most part.

I was watching an interview with Brosnan where he was talking about November Man and how it was influenced by the look and feel of Craig's Bond. Grittier and more realistic than what he did in the Bond films.
