The Cape Verde Islands continue the most impressive improvement arguably in FIFA's history. They were ranked 182 in 2000They were ranked 117 in 2010They are sitting at 37 right now and should move up if they hold on to beating Portugal (up 2-0 very late) in Portugal today.
This is awesome.
These friendlies count? Even the USA could have beaten this Portugal team
Yes friendlies count. They are weighted less than qualifiers in the ranking formula.

That is a very impressive run for sure but how have they done as far as qualifying for a major tournament such as the World Cup etc.

They qualified for their first ever African Nations Cup in 2012 and made it to the quarterfinals.

They also qualified for the 2015 African Nations Cup but did not get out of the group after 3 draws.

In 2014 WC qualifying they finished second in their group, but only the group winners advanced to the playoffs.

Thanks for the info, based on that I can see why they have been moving up in the rankings.

I'm never comfortable being a fan, let alone a known fan, but obviously I can't help myself when a certain club is involved. Put me down for Southampton, Palermo (the pink shirts are irresistible) and Faroe Islands. Hup.

Alaba out 7 weeks

Bayern star Alaba out for seven weeks

Austrian international David Alaba has made 29 appearances in all competitions for Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern München in 2014/15, scoring five and chipping in with three assists

Munich - FC Bayern München have been rocked by the news that defensive specialist David Alaba will be out for seven weeks after the 22-year-old sustained medial ligament damage in his left knee during Austria's 1-1 friendly draw with Bosnia-Hercegovina on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old, who suffered a similar injury in Bayern's 2-0 victory over AS Roma in the UEFA Champions League last November, had to be replaced at half time following a robust challenge involving TSG 1899 Hoffenheim left-back Ermin Bicakcic.

The versatile Austrian's absence will come as a major blow to the Bundesliga leaders, who have decisive quarter-final ties coming up in both the Champions League and DFB Cup later this month. Alaba himself, meanwhile, was "really disappointed" by the news but expressed determination to come back stronger before the campaign ends. "I have one main goal: I want to be back for the finale this season. Ill make sure I recover completely and then Ill go for it in rehab.

Bayern resume their title defence this weekend against Klassiker adversaries Borussia Dortmund already without the services of Arjen Robben and Javi Martinez, and with doubts over the fitness of Franck Ribery and Thiago Alcantara.

I'm on vacation in Panama City right now and as I was in the car leaving the downtown fish market, I saw some local wearing a Colorado Rapids jersey. Definitely did a double take.

Might be because of Gabriel Torres. He was Colorado's first DP ever and is from Panama City.

Very interesting. Do you think that he wasted all his salary and now needs to haul fresh fish in the market?

Maybe he just likes the smell.

That was the MLS goal of the year in 2011.
I should ####### hope so. Right at the top of the list in a lot of leagues most years.
I actually voted for this goal instead in 2011

me too.

that Nagbe goal was great- but he had time to juggle it twice? takes it down a notch for me compared to that Hasli goal.

Here is a video of the goals of the year from 1996 through 2010 and then the 4 nominees for the 2011 (2 of which we have already linked)

So my old high school coach finally retired.

* Started program in 1961 (that is not a typo). 53 years as coach at the same school

* Continued coaching until he was 78 and only stopped because he had a heart attack during a game last season

* All time record 696-180-127

* 20 Conference titles, 10 East Mass titles and 5 State Championships

* His 1977 team still holds a national record of going 23 straight games with out allowing a goal (my two older brothers were on this team and I was a ball boy)

Allow me to whine. My four day weekend will be spent on a six hour drive through a time portal, emerging to spend at least two days in 1965, also known as the small West Virginia town where my elderly parents live. I will miss

1. the Championship tripleheader today

2. Everton-Southampton tomorrow (no internet)

3. the inevitable stabbings at Sunderland-Newcastle Sunday

4. all the other European league matches during the weekend
