See if THIS rings any bells.
   That was not the French movie with the word 'Flic' in the title I was thinking of.

Not sure I'll ever be able to track down the other film since the only word I remember in  the title was 'Flic'.

"Flic" is apparently the French word for "cop", so you might have to kiss a LOT of frogs.

not the best flick. any 90-min caper film that spends 1/3 of the screen time on a guy changing in & out of disguises and hires American actors then dubs their speaking parts has too much goose liver for my tastes...

The Big Steal - TCM had a Robert Mitchum marathon the other day so I recorded a couple of them. This was fun. Not as good as The Big Sleep but it was entertaining, funny, and had some good chase scenes (for the time). Robert Mitchum is super charismatic and he and Jane Greer were great together. The Mexican stereotypes were a little disturbing but I just chalked it up to the time and enjoyed the movie.

Mitchum is so good that almost anything he is in is watchable. Greer is always a welcome sight as well.

Deep Cover would top my list of obscure neo-noirs. Scanning wikipedia's very loose list for the genre, Alphaville, The Bedroom Window (Curtis Hanson before LAConfidential),  Big Easy,  Drowning Pool, Eyewitness, 8 Million Ways to Die, Gumshoe, The Late Show, Medium Cool, Le Samouri, Sea of Love, Someone to Watch Over Me, Straight Time, True Confessions, Vanishing Point,  Insomnia, The Man Who Wasnt There, Mulholland Drive, Out of Time, Reindeer Games, Sexy Beast, Suspect Zero, Tell No One.

Special credit to a guy who i believe really wanted to be the 21st C Bogie before Tony Stark found him in rehab. Robert Downey Jr did two great turns in neo-noirs - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang & The Singing Detective before giving up

And of course, i'll remind folks of the movie i'm always reminding folks about - The Long Goodbye, the true daddy of the genre

ETA: one of the reasons Deep Cover tops my list is that it was the fightin' fave of one of my Albq pals, a drunk named Steve who claimed to have gotten a DUI once on a rider mower, interrupted his wedding vows with a laughing fit (i, the best man, caused it by doing a Stevie Wonder headroll cuz the preacher peppered his remarks with the phrase "bringing sunshine into each other's lives" too much) and would run out on the field at Dukes games anytime i offered to put up the bail. if my gang were all bored in a bar, all we'd have to do is mention Deep Cover and Steve would breathe raves str8 into the face of anyone who hadnt seen it and fight anyone who'd say a word agin it. it was a good flick, but thinking of Steve while watching makes it great.

CTRL-C, open Word document, CTRL-V.  Thanks.  Some new ones on here for me.

I was watching Anatomy of a Murder last night.   The odd things you fixate on after the vape pen - the odd cig holder the guy was smoking from, and laughing about how taboo the word "panties" were back in the day.   Good movie so far overall though!

Found a new under-the-radar gem.

Irresistible

Funnier than hell.  Highly recommended.

Won't give anything away as their is a major spoiler.

Also caught up with a really fun older one.

My Blue Heaven

Its better than I remembered.  Light hearted fast-paced comedy and Steve Martin plays his broad character perfectly.

Loosely based on the real life former mobster Henry Hill who was the subject of the movie Goodfellas.

I mean it was a little funny, but another strikeout for DC movies overall.

I don't get the praise, and it's not like I am opposed to cheesy or superhero movies.   Like I said in the SS thread, I laughed at Cena a bit, but tapped out after about 45min.   I really find Harley Quinn annoying, which obviously doesn't help.   Give me something like Kick ### for an oddball R rated take on the genre any day.

Been watching / rewatching lots of movies and TV, as usual:

Sword of Trust
Silly, sweet, and funny, this Marc Maron film on Netflix was directed by Maron's girlfriend who sadly passed away recently. Maron plays a pawn shop owner that has a chance to sell a very valuable civil war sword. Highly recommended.

G.I. Jane
I don't believe in guilty pleasures, as I like what I like. This movie is very flawed, but I love it. Demi Moore plays a fictional role as the first woman ever to be accepted into the Navy SEAL program. Viggo Mortenson is great as Master Chief. The battle at the end (much like Heartbreak Ridge) is disappointing, but I still love it.

White Lotus
This is a weird HBO miniseries, but that's what you get with Mike White. I still like White's HBO comedy series Enlightened more, but this is definitely worth watching. The music score is pretty wild, and unlike most you'll ever hear, and the photography is incredible.

Suicide Squad
Oy. Just another disastrous DC movie. Sure, Idris Elba is always great, and Margot Robbie is awesome. But there's very little humor here in a movie that's supposed to be funny.

Cena is great, but his character in Trainwreck is hilarious and that's a much better movie. I really like Robbie's Harley Quinn, but not enough to like the movie overall.

By the way, I am still pimping the free online service Tubi. Not many good films, but an amazing selection of 80s horror, action, music concerts, and sci-fi. Yes, you have to watch commercials every 20 minutes or so. But lovers of cult films will love this channel.

I guess I missed those posts.  I didn't know it was free - I will load up to the TV in the next day or two.   Commercials are a little annoying, but as long as the movies aren't edited...    I got used to commercials on Peacock anyway.

I never watch or listen to the commercials. I either get up to get some chow or I switch to a podcast. The 80s horror selection on Tubi is AMAZING. Some films I've watched on Tubi and recommend: The Wraith, The Long Kiss Goodnight, G.I. Jane, Savage Streets, Cat o' Nine Tails, and Invasion U.S.A.

Scream 4 -not as good as my memory told me.

Alien - 4k stream on Prime must have been wonky.  black screen for reason with sound.  too high, and that confused me for about 20mins.  Switched to The Thing instead

A few I watched in the last week -

  • Deidre and Lainey Rob a Train - This is on Netflix. I really enjoyed it. It was sweet and funny and tense at a few points. And it had really good acting all around. I recommend it.

  • Gunpowder Milkshake - I'm surprised there isn't more about this in this thread. Its basically female power John Wick. And I like it. I could watch John Wick ripoffs all day. Especially one that has Karen Gillan, Carla Gugino, Lena Headley, Michelle Yeah, and Angela Bassett kicking ###. Obviously its unrealistic and silly. But its fun.

  • Jolt - I mean, the fact that it has Kate Beckinsale moves it from like a 2 to a 3. Its hard to dislike anything she does. And Stanley Tucci is always great. But this probably isn't a good movie. I mean, there is some serious ### kicking. But the story is ... not good.

  • Out of the Past - Classic from Robert Mitchum. I'm glad TCM had some of his movies on so I got to see how great he was. I basically only knew him from Scrooged. This was a classic noir with a lot of twists and turns. It was pretty good - not great. But Mitchum is just awesome.

What horror movie we all watching for Friday the 13th tonight?
I watched the remake of Funny Games (aka Funny Games U.S.) What a messed up movie, but it’s not quite as messed up as Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist. WTH did I just watch?

Top 5 if not #1 Horror movie for me (saw it when I was a kid).

Also on the lines of Jdogg's post last week, I can't pimp Kanopy enough if your library supports it.   Feel like it's gotten even better over the last year.   Tons of great stuff, but does lean to the indie, classic, foreign side of the movie spectrum.   It's free, but it's capped at 10 "rentals" a month.

Yep, Kanopy is good.

Used it to watch Dear Comrades!, which I was considering paying to rent.

Turns out it was only just okay; maybe because I'm pretty aware of the evils of Communism/Socialism.
