Ok, that was fun. Cold, but fun! Rainy, icy mix, lots of ice and mud on the trails, frozen feet, fun times. Totally different route so can't really compare to previous years. Also kind of a bummer that I just realized that my bib didn't have a timing chip on it so I don't show in the standings but that's ok. Watch says 28:08 for the 5k. That would be 36th overall.

What's up with this guy and his fake races?

Prairie Mountain on New Year's Day must be like the gym on New Year's Day.

Wednesday, I got to the trailhead at 0630 (2 hours before sunrise) and, as usual, I was the only car there at that time.

Today, I get to the trailhead at the same time, and I was probably car #25.

Regardless of the "crowding", the trail conditions (packed snow) and weather (~20F & light/moderate wind) were really good for me to try to grab a PR on the double up & down... and I got it.  Felt good to start the year.

Had a nice run in some fresh snow this morning. Not very far, but this was our first real snow. Love that run - no music - just the quiet falling of the snow.

After that used FOUR different shovels to clear snow:

1. Large push shovel

2. Normal show shovel

3. Ice scraper metal shovel

4. Old Ace Hardware shovel that I brought out just to get her some work.

Good way to start the year.

Well was pretty pumped to put 2020 in the rear view, just as I’m sure many were.  Just got back from a run to find out my wife was taken to the ER.  Sledding accident that resulted in a dislocated ankle and tibia/fibula fractures.  ####### ugh.   :kicksrock:
Oh crap. Sorry to hear that.

Oh damn.  I had a spiral fracture of my fibula which required two surgeries.  Old ice hockey injury.

i hope she heals up quicker than i did.  Sending good thoughts her way.

It will be a process to figure out how peloton jives with running.
In the beginning, even easy rides sapped my running legs more than I expected. It’s gotten better though. I use for 20-30 min recovery rides and as a bad weather bail out, mostly.  I get probably greater benefit from the various workouts on the app to have someone tell me what to do with a variety of core/stretching stuff. Much better than me just doing it.

Once my body got used to it, nothing got my legs warmed up for running better than the bike. All my running PRs were tri or brick related.

Tell me more.  You would do a 20-30 minute ride and then go run a speed or tempo workout?
My 10k PR was part of an Olympic tri. My HM pr was part of a big bike/HM/bike workout where my club rode out of the city to a race and then time-trialed back.

Brick workouts felt good to me once I got used to them and shifted my stride shorter with higher cadence (IM shuffle). They're hard to do here though without a group...don't want to leave the bike or run stuff outside, and don't want to deal with schlepping the bike in and out of the apartment while still needing to run. Still want to try the bike share bike to a run...but not in the cold and not without a helmet, so stuck again without meeting up with others.

Not good times for the SayWhat household.  The injury was worse than expected.  She completely blew up her ankle (multiple fractures) on top of the displaced tibia fracture and fibula fracture.  She’s in recovery from surgery this morning, which was simply to insert external pins in the bones to hold them in place so that swelling can subside over the next 1-2 weeks.  From there, reconstructive surgery with a foot/ankle specialist.  Beyond that, “months and months and months” of recovery ahead.  The doctor was very upfront during pre-op today that this is an extremely devastating injury and upon asking her what her activity level was, indicated that “you will likely always have some pain from this injury moving forward, and some (he later privately told me ‘most’) never run much again.”  He was very trying to set some realistic expectations for what post-recovery life looks like.

I’m beyond devastated.  I’m the strong one in these situations and I know I need to be optimistic and positive for her through this, but I’m struggling to hold it together.  The potential of not ever running again with my wife is heartbreaking.

@SayWhat?, I'm super sorry to hear that.  Dammit, dammit, dammit. The only hope I can offer right now is that she uses her running toughness and discipline and channels that through the months ahead. Lousy news to start the new year.

Runner friend of mine majorly ####ed up her foot in November 2019 in a freak accident in the water while on vacation in Hawaii.  All 5 metatarsals dislocated, 3 of them in multiple places.  Multiple plates/pins inserted.  They thought they might have to fuse some of the joints together, and it was unclear if she'd ever run again.

Well it took a while, but she rehabbed her ### off, and this past August she ran a mile on the treadmill.  Last weekend she did a 10-miler outside.

The moral of the story?  Don't let her feel bad for herself, help and encourage her to attack the rehab, and don't let yourselves be limited by what the doctors tell you.  HTFU.

@SayWhat? - ugh.  So tough right now.  Long term thoughts often dominate in times like these. Your ability to workout together may look different but you can still share that experience.

In the immediate, celebrate the tiny wins as the happen in the coming days, weeks and months. The ankle is tough because of limited blood flow in that area.

It sucks that this is all from a sledding accident. Be thankful it was her ankle and not her head/neck.

@SayWhat? So sorry to hear that and sending all the best to your wife. Had a bit of a roller coaster ride while out on a long run today thinking about what I have lost based on being a lazy SOB. I had somewhat put it in perspective thinking about my back hurting a little lately but it still being far better than when I ruptured a disk in my back a number of years ago. I'm not "supposed to" to run or play golf or a number of other things that I do anyway. You never know what may be in store down the road. One day at a time and hopefully you get some good news soon!

@SayWhat?

I'm so sorry to hear the awful news. I know it's going to be a long road ahead, but wishing both of you the best moving forward. Heartbreaking but looking forward to future success in recovery.

Between my conversation with Gru a while back and whomever does the NYC Zwift ride, I finally got lured back up to Central Park on a beautiful NYC running morning. It was nice to be back up there...was hoping to see somebody from my old tri club.
Lucky you! I'm sure it was better than the virtual experience from my laptop.

Tried out my new noxgear vest that I got for Christmas, gamechanger.  I have a lot of high vis stuff from work that I wear when running in the dark and I'd say 50% of the cars/people still don't see me.  Wearing this vest this morning every car that passed by gave me room, clearly saw me.

Look at @El Floppo on the brink of the weekly high in mileage - just gotta be sure to log more Sunday than @Juxtatarot and @Zasada. Make it happen.
Should be doable.  If I manage to drag my sorry legs out tomorrow morning, it will be for a short one.

I'm at the tail end of a week where I set a PR for total elevation (5,500m/18,000ft) and an almost-best 11 consecutive days of running.

So @El Floppo, you're probably just going to have to top @Juxtatarot.  Good luck!

And @El Floppo, I don't know if you read Runner's World.  A feature article in the new mag is about a woman who grew up in a very conservative sect of Hasidic Jews in South Williamsburg.  If you took Bedford St. south for maybe a half-mile/mile after exiting the W Bridge (vs. your turn back toward the river), you'd be right in her old haunts.  She eventually divorced and, with her son, "escaped" the restrictive environment and has now become quite the runner.  Her first race was a 5K looping around Prospect Park.

Happy New Year everyone!  I finished 2020 with 1350 running miles over 191:50 with 41,200 ft. of elevation.  Funny how running can work as I was feeling a bit burnt out earlier in the week, but had near perfect winter running weather today - upper 40s, maybe a bit too windy but nothing awful.  Our foot of snow from a few weeks back has all melted, so was able to have a nice long run where everything just sort of went right - was even hitting the road crossings almost perfectly.

Very sorry to hear about your wife SayWhat - sending good vibes your way.  I will just echo what a couple of other folks said in that her being active and goal oriented should give her a better than average chance of success in her rehab.

One final thing for the group - who on here is initials MR from Strava?  I couldn't figure it out from the location or any of the FBG keys on Strava...  TIA

Stop it, I can only get so hard

For all you new Peloton owners, if you need cheap cycling shorts, these are the ####. Got a pair for Christmas and ordered 3 more pair after my first ride.

Love my vest. Haven't run in the dark much lately but wouldn't run in the dark without it.
