I know we've gone over this and I know you've tried with one other person, but you really need to get that sciatica addressed.  At this point, it's interfering with your overall comfort and ability to run.  It's not something to fight through indefinitely.  I would search out other providers until you find one you are comfortable with and can answer your questions and give you options.  I know you don't have much faith in the medical community but even if it means traveling outside of where you live to see someone (i.e. maybe Orlando or Miami), then I strongly recommend you do so.

ETA -- And it really sucks.  Hate to see you have to go through this.

Also, I know you've already expressed no interest in surgery.  But you are way too young to deal with this for decades if that ends up being the option to fix this once and for all.  I look forward to the day when you look back and say "why did I wait so long?".
I don't know what field you're in, but - LISTEN TO HIM!!!

I understand the wants and fears angle, but bottom line - you won't make progress nor be comfortable until the problem is fixed.  And it'll probably require making a decision you don't want to make.

In regards to the surgery I would require, there are far more negative results than positive. Some people have even experienced worse symptoms than before. Trust me, I know I need to get it fixed.

My coach ran with me today for my workout, which was nice.  10+ miles total, including 8 x 1/2-mile repeats with 3-minute walk/jog recovery.  The first part of each repeat was a 1/4-mile hill....not horribly steep (at its worst, probably 5-6% for a couple of 30-yard segments), but long.  It was really nice having my coach to pace (push) me, since all I had to do was keep up with him.  Pretty happy with the pacing given the hill...did 6:24 pace for the first one, then 6:28/6:16/6:17/6:15/6:15/6:13/6:15.  Finished the run, went to my car, and destroyed an entire sleeve of thin mints on my way to shower at the gym.

Just an easy 7 tomorrow, then 10 miles with some pick-ups on Saturday.

Where you are getting this information?  I would highly doubt that being the case.

And at this moment is the first day of the year with a temperature starting with the number 6.  I've been pushing it hard lately, so I think I'm just going to enjoy the stroll in a sleeveless this afternoon...

No beets though.

We got into the upper 50s but, of course, it's windy and rainy.

Peer-reviewed medical journals from my local library. Where else would I get them?
Listen, and I hope this comes across the right way.

I have a degree in medicine and know how to read peer reviewer medical journals and I would never consider being able to do so about a surgery such as this and know enough to make a decision about what needs to be done.

Same way I wouldn't expect another physician from another specialty to be able to know about what I do.

At this point, you need to see someone (even if it takes a few attempts to find someone you like/trust) and let them tell you what the options are.  Spine specialists have YEARS of learning/training/experience that simply can't compare to trying to read about it on your own.

Your distrust in the medical field is only hurting yourself. I get that you've had poor experiences in the past. But I still STRONGLY recommend getting an expert opinion on this that can answer all your questions.

And to be clear, this is coming from someone who tries to do as little as possible in terms of medical interventions, both in how I practice as well as how I approach my own health and my family's.

Got kind of dizzy this morning trying to run fast in the dark with a head lamp. Either my vision was weird due to the contrast or the beet juice had me trippin.

No, you listen, I have a deep respect for you and your opinion. I know it’s all coming from a good place. I have seen 4 different doctors for this issue, each one telling me something different. Aside from the time and money wasted, I get frustrated with the lack of caring. I know I just haven’t found the right one, and I will continue my search because you are getting a little too serious. I just came in here trying to search for a way to tape up my toes.

:lmao:

But seriously, the old issue isn't going away and new issues are being created.  I can't relate to your frustration, but I understand.  And I'm also happy to read that you get how serious he is about it.  I'm no medical pro, but continuing on as is will only increase the likelihood of whatever it is becoming permanent.  You're gonna have to take a big step back if you want to take steps forward.  If you don't take that step back then you're quite simply not going to go forward.

I think I'm supposed to laugh at this. Especially that last line.

I really hope you get a solution and just want to see you get back to being a BMF. I would give the same advice (repeatedly, as well) to my close friends and family and would heed it if it were myself.  Nothing but good intentions meant.

Going along with that, maybe a trip to Miami or Tampa and see someone at an academic institution. The couple extra hours of travel time would be worth it if you can at least find someone that you can trust. That's probably your best bet.

And sorry, don't know #### about taping toes.

Beet Juice: How Much and When?

I should be getting my shots today.  Gonna take 1-2 before my 10-miler on Saturday, and I'll probably try it again before my workout next Wednesday.  Will report back.

ETA:  Just in case any of you is smart enough to read the actual study...
—Dietary supplementation with beetroot juice (BR), containing approximately 5– 8 mmol inorganic nitrate (NO3 ), increases plasma nitrite concentration ([NO2 ]), reduces blood pressure, and may positively influence the physiological responses to exercise.

To summarize before y'all fall asleep: This s###'s the real deal for exercise.

However, the dose-response relationship between the volume of BR ingested and the physiological effects invoked has not been investigated.

More of this beetroot-s### is better than less, but we're not exactly sure why that is yet.  Yeah, more research for us!

In a balanced crossover design, 10 healthy men ingested 70, 140, or 280 ml concentrated BR (containing 4.2, 8.4, and 16.8 mmol NO3 , respectively) or no supplement to establish the effects of BR on resting plasma [NO3 ] and [NO2 ] over 24 h.

We talked 10 healthy dudes into drinking this s### to see what would happen.

Subsequently, on six separate occasions, 10 subjects completed moderate-intensity and severe-intensity cycle exercise tests, 2.5 h postingestion of 70, 140, and 280 ml BR or NO3 -depleted BR as placebo (PL).

So they drank it, then worked out.  BMF's, we're telling ya ...BMFs!

Following acute BR ingestion, plasma [NO2 ] increased in a dose-dependent manner, with the peak changes occurring at approximately 2–3 h. Compared with PL, 70 ml BR did not alter the physiological responses to exercise.

After hoisting a few, good stuff in their blood increased (after two or three hours; had to sit and listen to them talk and brag during that time ...ugh).  The guys that took the fake stuff didn't show improvement ...just red piss.  Ha!

However, 140 and 280 ml BR reduced the steady-state oxygen (O2) uptake during moderate intensity exercise by 1.7% (P 0.06) and 3.0% (P 0.05), whereas time-to-task failure was extended by 14% and 12% (both P 0.05), respectively, compared with PL.

The more beetroot s###, the better they performed!   :headbang:

The results indicate that whereas plasma [NO2 ] and the O2 cost of moderate-intensity exercise are altered dose dependently with NO3 -rich BR, there is no additional improvement in exercise tolerance after ingesting BR containing 16.8 compared with 8.4 mmol NO3 .

At some point, drinking more didn't mean jack.

These findings have important implications for the use of BR to enhance cardiovascular health and exercise performance in young adults

This ain't some stupid academic study.  We really learned something here!  You're welcome in advance.

They were drinking the concentrated stuff that @gruecd just received.  I’d have to drink, like, a whole bottle of the regular juice for real good effect. I think I’ll skip my dose tomorrow and chug the rest of the bottle early Saturday a few hours before my race.

For a year plus of lower back pain and a pain in the left oblique and butt when running (varies from barely noticeable to I can't run today).  Tried 3-4 months of PT and 2-3 months of the chiro.  Went to the ortho clinic on Saturday and the spine and hips checked out better than average for a 52 year old.  They started me on roids and muscle relaxers.  It's helped provide some relief.  Had my best 5 k in years yesterday with a 26:45 on the treadmill.  That may have been a weight handicapped pr.  Actually did this on quads that were shredded from a 2000 ft 4 mi decent on Sunday and breaking out the bike for the first time in ages on Tuesday.
Was just itching to run fast today.  Well a fast for a 240 lb overweight old dude.  Shouldn't have done this, but knocked 2:05 off that number above for a 24:40.  Again this was treadmill so I wouldn't sniff that outside.

Half is Saturday and the Full on Sunday.  Debating on a couple of race strategies:

1. Run like I had properly trained and blow up.  Then walk and jog to the finish.

2. Run sensibility and blow up a couple of miles later than option 1 because i didn't properly train.  Then walk and jog to the finish.

Actually I was just happy not to have the knee barking at me today and the back and hip pain was bearable for a change.

Hopefully they don't piss test a back of pack finisher because I'll be banned for life with all the #### in my system.  Anyone know if beet juice serves as a masking agent?

Also... With 2.5 weeks to go, what's the plan that gets me to meet some of the great folks here that have inspired me in numerous ways?  Haven't exactly looked at the schedule but assuming I will be leaving work early to pick up my packet sometime Friday afternoon. I'd be open to doing something that afternoon/evening and/or a beer after the races. And will it involve chief doing a live performance of his chart topping hit?
I forgot to answer this.  After the race is fine with me.

I’m not sure what time I’ll get there Friday.  I’ll probably work part of the day so it won’t be early.

3. Blow up and recover repeatedly, then puke at the end. Because you’re a BMF.

And of course, drink one gallon of beet juice beforehand

BTW, this is the same mechanism as ED drugs. So you could take a Viagra and probably get the same benefits to race.

Alternatively, you can probably drink some beet juice, and, well, you know....

@SteelCurtainare you okay?  I only see one run from you this week on Strava.
Thanks for checking in.  I’ve got the flu and trying to recover. Took Tuesday as a scheduled (healthy) rest day so I could knock out my Wednesday MP run.  Woke up at 2 am Wednesday to vomiting and 104 degree temp.

I’m now keeping food down but my energy levels are still way down. Of course this is happening during some gorgeous running weather.

I’m going to try to go to work today and then maybe, depending on how i feel, try to run short and easy later.

As much as this is messing with my mind, I’m incredibly thankful it happened now and not race weekend as I would have been a DNS the last couple days if it was raceday. I also don’t want this to linger for weeks so I want to knock it down before getting after it for the last part of this training cycle.

Thanks for asking!

Hey maybe I should be drinking beet juice. 😉

That sucks but it is better news than being injured.  You'll bounce back quickly from this.

Wow, nice work!  FWIW I run faster outside than on the treadmill (don't know why) so I wouldn't discount your performance like you are...

Been out of town and catching the tail end of this beet juice talk.  Not sure I want to see how this subject came up.

Good luck to everyone this weekend!

Well the 10k I have been targeting for a year is this Saturday. I had hoped to be in slightly better condition but all in all I think about as good as I could have done.   Have been very lucky not to get sick nor have any major ailments to slow down training. My lower back started bothering me last week after my 8 mile run so I had to change my plan this week but you do what you can. Seeing all of your efforts listed both here and on strava help with motivation. A whole lot of mornings I did not want to get up at 4:00 and go for a run but made myself do it. I can’t even imagine running in the conditions so many of you do. Keep up the awesome work everyone 😀
Here it is....

Good luck!!

Good luck @Zasada, @OrganizedChaos and @BassNBrew!

Weather for me tomorrow will be about 30 with a 10 mph wind hitting me in the face the last half mile.  Plan is to go out under 5:40 and try to hang on.

I’m not sure what to expect.  I was really dragging early in the week but my groin is much better now and my legs seem fresh again the last few days.  I’ve ran very few miles under 6:00 this year and almost all of those were on the treadmill.  We’ll see.  Hopefully beet juice magic comes through.
