I've been running in Saucony Freedom ISO 2's (8.4 oz; 4 mm drop), but they've been replaced with the Freedom 3's, and I wanted to find a lower price point than that $150. Looking at some of the shoes used here, I tried the Saucony Kinvara (7.8 oz; 4 mm) and New Balance Fuel Cell Rebels (7.2 oz; 6 mm), but neither felt right. The manager at Fleet Feet suggested the New Balance Beacon v3 (8.2 oz; 6 mm), which felt great. The other item I wanted to try were the Hoka Clifton 7's (8.7 oz; 5 mm). The Cliftons felt a little snug going on, but the stride felt awesome in them with a natural forward lean. So I bought both. NB Beacons priced at $120, and the Hoka Cliftons priced at $130 ...less a $15 FF coupon from racking up runs. As some of you recommend, it can be beneficial to have different brands so the feet can adapt to each and not be in the exact same position every run. We'll see how that works. My new clifton 7s are due today or tomorrow. AND THE NEW GLOVES!!!11!!!

More info The wife is running a HM this weekend and is looking at this race for February. Her reasons make sense. First, she's getting a coach for the first time and trying it out to see if it helps. Second, she wants to train over the colder months instead of the summer. Third, this race is a downhill race (half the decline as J&J), so it'll give her a preview of what it's like as well as a chance to run a marathon without all the pressure to BQ. Fourth, it's a little vacation time to get away. Fifth, it's supposedly a beautiful course as well. As for me, I don't know what I should do with that. I actually wouldn't mind running it but I absolutely do not have enough time to train. I'm hoping to be able to start running again by the beginning of November, but even that will be at least a month just getting back into things, which leaves me only 2 months to train. That said, being a downhill race, I think I could get through it if I just focus on volume and long runs over the winter. Thoughts? You're answering your own question. If there's a half option then elect it.

Training for that will start very end of March/beginning of April (I haven't mapped out the exact date yet). My plan up until then was to work on base training again like last year that got me into a good spot before the stupid knee issue. That said, I think the timing of this could work out just fine. I'm not shooting for a BQ or any certain time. If I can get some good volume through November, December, January, February (which I did last year), then I feel I can run this without it being an A goal race, recover for a few weeks, and then actually hit my training plan in stride 6 weeks later. Worst case, I take it super easy for the first few miles and run it as a long training run (20 miles). This will get me out there and make sure I get that volume in. This little break I've been on has been good but I'm ready to get back out there. I'll recover from surgery and get back out there with a purpose.

If the half and full share a course, do the half while pacing your wife through your finish. Otherwise, sign up with the goal of running it at 9:30+ pace, like the 20 miler you did. If you can get through it without any stopping/walking, I would imagine that would feel like a great win and would be doable with that course versus the hilly one you ran. (Look at me acting like just running a full is no big deal even though I've never come close to that distance).

Just adjust your time goal. You should then have plenty of time to recover before your next cycle for Jack and Jill. Which you will then crush with all that base built up and the knowledge of a second marathon under your belt.

I have looked at that one myself, and was #2 on my list for my first marathon attempt (which ended-up being Houston instead). I love the long-run/easy option. I would love you to race it even more, but you know your availability for training more than anyone else. And your first marathon was not a disaster, that's bull####. You finished, on a tough course. Brony 7,578
I had a chance to get up north this past weekend to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for the first time in my life. It's really beautiful up there - delivered on expectations. Got in a long hike / photo hunt on Saturday. We made our way back on Sunday and stopped at Kettle Moraine North Unit outside of Sheboygan. As we're doing a hike there, I saw a bunch of runner/hikers moving through our trail with numbers on. I figured out that we were on a portion of the Ice Age Trail, but I didn't have a clue what event would be going on. Anyway, Kettle Moraine was also pretty damn nice, but both places had tons of rocks and roots. Must've been a ##### on the ankles.

gianmarco 28,012
Adventures in marathoning continues as the Marcos will both be racing a marathon in February. This won't be nearly as exciting as the initial installment, but at least it's something. But seriously, anyone looking for a race, this is a solid candidate. Good temps, dry, train over winter, and $100 (there's a promo code to drop it from $115), which isn't that bad. Time to start training now if you're in! 6

Quote We know everyone is anxious for an update on the status of our 10th anniversary race that is currently scheduled for Saturday, February 13, 2021. We recognize that the current situation has been and continues to be very fluid, with ever-evolving national health and safety standards. Our promise to our runners is that we will continue to plan for and organize our race. We are partnering closely with our local, state, and public safety officials to ensure we provide a race environment that is safe for both our runners and the community. We will provide any updates to our runners as they become available. Should the event be canceled due to COVID–19, our contingency plan includes three options for runners: Participate in-person on a future date (likely fall of 2021), when deemed safe by local, state, and public safety officials. Participate in a virtual race option. Defer race entry to the 2022 race, with all deferral fees waived. We look forward to February and hope you will join us for our decennial race! Stay safe, stay healthy, keep running, and we will see you in February!

El Floppo 27,939
All this trail running talk makes me miss Mt Tam and the Marin Headlands. Had two runs out of my parents house on single track and/or fire roads with 1k+ elevation. Actually...just remembered a crazy and timely dream I had recently. I used to see bobcats on one of the trails pretty regularly...little ####ers weren't scared of anything and I'd routinely have to stop and yell until they'd decide to saunter off. In the dream instead of a bobcat, it was a mountain lion...like the video....and I knew cubs were up ahead. Jesus...it really was just like the video, except it didn't charge me. A mt biker came by at just the moment and the cat sauntered off like the bobcats would. Strange I'm just remembering that now. Eta...got my cliftons today- pretty jazzed to take them out for a spin in the morning Edited October 15, 2020 by El Floppo

We hiked from Chapel basin to Chapel Beach and back, and you could almost tell the exact instant the bug spray wore off because we were suddenly inundated. Agreed on the lodging. We only ended up in Marquette because we couldn't find anything acceptable elsewhere, although it's a nice enough little town and has neat town park jutting out into Lake Superior. I dread doing anything long in the winter months. Long runs are miserable if you're schlepping through thick snow or slush or if you don't have your clothing choices on point, and training can be hard to fit into a schedule as I won't run in the dark if it's below freezing for fear of black ice. Still, glad to see you get back in the game! And, I guess you won't have to carry 10 pounds of water in the winter.

Snow in the city suuuucks. Slush lakes and/or ice at every intersection. Running and cycling stop for me. But I'm happy doing both as long as it's above 0 out...actually prefer outdoors training in the winter as it weeds out (or drives indoors) the more casual athletes.
