PGA Tour Thread: 2019 Season Ends (1 Viewer)

Will post letter but overheard an epic raht
Wow, I was apparently pretty drunk when I posted this.  Don't even remember doing it.  Had greenskeeper passes for everyday of the Phoenix Open (couldn't go Saturday-Sunday due to prior obligations).  Was so much fun.  Really really enjoyed the mornings and the practice round because the golf watching was so much better and the crowds weren't as crazy.  Got on 16 for the tail end of the pro am on Wednesday which was fun.  Simply just too much of a wait the other days and the free booze/food in the greenskeepers area was too hard to pass up.  General day plan was get a few drinks in then head to either 3 tee or 10 fairway as we found those the least crowded with most access to the players. We'd stay as long as our bladders and buzzes would let us before heading back to use the bathroom and get more booze. Left side ten fairway was fun bc it was a landing zone and several players hit into us (Rahm was kind of a #### to this loud, boisterous guy that he hit with his drive but all the other players were awesome).

Highlight though was definitely standing on three tee on day 1 (Thursday). We posted up directly on the rope just behind the water cooler and chairs.  3 is a reachable par 5 so the strategy was perfect as players often had to wait and would sit down, grab a water, and engage in friendly discussions.  Overheard two absolutely epic ones:

1. The first was between Justin Thomas and Bones.  There was a really interesting and very technical (i.e. over my head) discussion about some new iron technology going on between Phil and Hadwin so I didn't catch the start but the gist is that Thomas was lamenting to Bones how Spieth consistently refuses to pay his bets when they gamble on golf.  Said that, "[Spieth] is so damn competitive that [Spieth] won't pay me [Thomas] on holes he loses where he makes a bad putt because he'll claim it's 'the worst' putt ever and the hole shouldn't count."  They then joked back and forth about whether he'll learn and that some guys just don't pay bets.

2.  Kuchar and Bubba had about a five minute discussion regarding the sheer number of tour players that met their wives at the Phoenix Open.  They mentioned Lehman and a couple of guys that I didn't know.  They both agreed that the number was really high and that Phil and Amy didn't count because they met in college.  The best part of the exchange was this:

Bubba: This is tough the number is high. Do multiple marriages count?

Kuchar: Yeah I suppose a few guys met like 2-3 of their wives here.  I think we should just count those as just one marriage per piece because they usually don't last long.

Bubba: I agree. So we're still over like a dozen, right?

Looking bad for the Genesis golf tourney in CA.  Some didn't finish yesterday & severe rain today & tomorrow.   Really look forward to watching golfers play Riviera.   More of an old style course.

We knew the table was set for the season with all the young guns lined up...but it's coming to fruition so far.

JT 3 wins, Matsuyama 3 wins, Speith a win, now DJ...

If he's as good as he was this week inside of 10 feet he's very tough to beat. The kikuyu didn't look bad this year. I've tried to hit out of the thick stuff st Riviera. Near impossible

This week it's Fowlers turn in the spotlight. This year couldn't have started any better.
I agree. I was at the Honda Classic for a few hours this morning. Got to see Sergio, Zach, Dufner, Scott, and a few others. Looking forward to the Masters.

Just got back from the event - I have seats overlooking the 17th pin (about 20 yards away from it) every year and the entire crowd was so hyped for Rickie Fowler - he had the biggest following this year by a mile and was the only guy that walked by us who gave a few shout outs to the kids rooting him on next to me.  Sergio and a guy a few seats over got into it yesterday - apparently Sergio is pretty good with the kids and ladies but is a complete Richard to everyone else.

I believe the next event is usually in Miami but Trump lost the rights to host the tournament this year so it's in Mexico instead.  So this year at the Honda we had a lot less of the big names we usually get.

In case anyone forgot about the best young gun...this is an important year for Rory to reestablish that.  He'all be back to World #1 soon I'm guessing.

I've been to a number of tournies over the years...

Rickie is great with everyone, Phil is always cool to be around, Snedeker was very kind when we chatted with him, and a few others like Billy Horschel, Ernie Els, and Aaron Baddeley have been very nice.

Sergio I think is just a "when you catch him" kinda guy.  Sometimes I've followed him around and he's pretty jovial and smiling and sometimes he just seems like a total ****.  I was there at the Players the year Sergio blamed Tiger for his poor play and he was just #####ing and moaning constantly.  He seems like he'd be okay in a one on one situation, but something about the crowds just bring up the worst in him.

Having a hard time believing how easy he just made that fairway bunker shot look on 18.
That's a TOUGH shot for most of us hacks.  He made it look easy.  He's by far the most athletic beast on tour.  Couple with a stepped up short game and you gotta play some serious golf to beat him these days.

This Hadwin guy is a sweet swinger...but Cantley not going away...30 min away from the Snake Pit.

I say it every year but now it's truer than ever...its a shame this golf course falls in the rotation where it does.

That stat:. No one else but Tiger has won back-to-back WGCs...and he's done it 7 times.

I like Haas. He's got an old school gamer feel about him. Takes it back to the outside and cuts the ball.

He was interviewed today - asked how he was gonna sleep and what prep he would do to get ready for Rahm. His answer was something like 'well I'm hoping to find an extra 30 yards in my sleep.'

Love haas. He always knows the money difference between 9th and 10th. True professional.

What does it take to bump Jordan Spieth as the Masters favorite? Apparently, three wins in a row does the trick.

With Dustin Johnson winning yet again, this time at the WGC-Dell Match Play, the World No. 1 has emerged as the clear favorite to win the year's first major championship. And Vegas finally agrees. On Sunday night, Westgate Las Vegas Sportsbook released new Masters odds that list Johnson at 5/1. Spieth, who has a win and two runner-ups in three Masters starts, held steady at 13/2 despite being knocked out in the round-robin portion of the Match Play.

Johnson was actually a slight favorite for a week after his victory at the WGC-Mexico Championship when he moved to 6/1 ahead of Spieth at 13/2, but he dropped back into a tie with Spieth the following week.

Rory McIlroy remained at 8/1, the third-best odds of anyone in the field.

Jason Day, once a co-favorite at 8/1, fell to 15/1. Day withdrew from the Match Play during his opening match to be with his ailing mother. Day released a statement on Friday that his mom underwent successful lung cancer surgery, but he hasn't specifically said he'll play in the Masters.

Hideki Matsuyama, who has struggled since winning in Phoenix, fell to 20/1. He was previously listed as high as 12/1.

Jon Rahm, following another close call in a WGC, moved up to 20/1. He's joined by Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose at that number. Rahm will be making his first start at Augusta National.

Dustin Johnson will be making his eighth start at Augusta National and his past two have produced his best finishes, a T-4 and a T-6. He is the first player since Rory McIlroy in 2014 to win three consecutive PGA Tour starts. He also became the first player to win all four WGC events.

Tiger Woods remains on the board at 100/1. His only public appearance since withdrawing from the Dubai Desert Classic on Feb. 3 was a book signing in NYC last week.

Great run by Rahm.  He's tenacious and had DJ squirming there for a minute or two.

Can't wait for Augusta.

He's very impressive. Amazing what he's show in his first 15 tournaments as a pro.
He doesn't get rattled.  He had nothing to lose with some of those shots when he was down by 4 or 5 holes.  But he kept the pressure on by bombing those drives, even just down one hole.  His drive on 18 turned out too good and it hurt him coming back down that slope on the green.  Another foot on his second shot might have turned into a tap in for birdie, and an extra hole to break the tie.

I like DJ and Spieth as favorites at Augusta.  DJ will have plenty of short wedges but it will come down to putting.  And he has really improved there.  But Spieth seems tailor made for those greens with the way he putts on them.  If he can stay focused he'll stay around the top of the board all weekend.

Rory is a wild card.  He may run away from the field the first two days.  But he seems to have a lapse in some big tournaments where he falls back.  Augusta is a roller coaster for him.

Hideki Matsuyama is the one I want to follow the first day or two.  I think he has the game to win there.  Again, putting.

I don't see Jason Day or Ricky Fowler putting together 4 good rounds there.  I'd be surprised to see their names in the top 7 on Sunday.  I would like for either of them to do well, but just don't see it.  Feel the same way about Stenson.

Rahm is a dark horse like Matsuyama, imo.  Very strong player and may not realize the pressure of a Sunday at Augusta when scores are tight.  I think he'll have a lot of eagle putts during the week.

Phil is my sentimental pick.  Always fun when Phil is in contention.  I hope he's there on Sunday.

Has anyone seen Bubba?  Not sure where he's been or if he'll come out to play.

I hope Tiger plays and can somehow make the cut.  But I doubt it.

Mid range dark horse:  Ian Poulter, Brooks Koepka,

Old timer dark horse:  Angel Cabrera.  Hey, he knows how to win at this course in particular.

Dj has separated himself from the pack now.  If he performs on the greens the Masters scoring record is in jeopardy IMO.  2, 8, 13 and 15 are par 4's for him.

He hasn't down much since his win in Phoenix but I like Hideki. He's done well there the last couple years.

Obviously DJ is the hottest player by far & should be the favorite, but he doesn't have a great track record at ANGC. Three double bogies in last years tournament (he finished 4 back) - he needs to avoid big numbers.
