WR Nelson Agholor, BAL (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld:

NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock said USC WR Nelson Agholor is "one of the best route runners in this draft."

"I think he has more upside than (former USC WRs) Robert Woods or Marqise Lee," Mayock said. Initially lost in the shuffle in a deep WR class, Agholor has recently emerged as a darkhorse first rounder. "You can play him outside, you can play him inside," NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah said. "I know he has a slight frame but he has burst and can also return punts and kicks. He has a lot of value and is a very, very bright guy who has impressed teams with his football knowledge. The top of the second round is where I have him, in the 30s, but I can easily see him sliding up into the first round." Agholor, who caught 104 passes for 1,313 yards (12.6) and 12 scores in 2014, posted a 4.44 forty with a 1.53 10-yard split at the combine.

NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah can "easily" see USC WR Nelson Agholor "sliding up into the first round."

Agholor, an early entrant, has largely been lost in the shuffle in the middle of a deep receiver group. He's coming off a sensational season, however, and has been tremendous during the postseason circuit. It certainly seems like he won't get out of Round 2.

USC WR Nelson Agholor surprisingly ranked as the No. 2 receiver in the class according to Football Outsiders' Playmaker Score.

Terry Glenn and Ike Hilliard were cited as similar historical prospects. "Agholor hopes to break USC out of a wide receiver-producing slump that has included first-round busts such as Mike Williams and R. Jay Soward," wrote FO's Nathan Forster. "More recent draft picks Robert Woods and Marqise Lee have had their moments but haven't yet broken out. Agholor was a reasonably productive receiver at USC, with 1,313 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns." Scout's Inc. ranks Agholor as the No. 37 overall prospect.

According to NFL Media's Charles Davis, USC wide receivers coach Tee Martin has told him that USC WR Nelson Agholor reminds him of a young Reggie Wayne.
"What I like about Agholor is he's a former running back out of high school who has trained himself to be a receiver while at USC," Davis said. "He's worked hard to become a technician." The analyst believes that Agholor himself could be a nice replacement for Wayne in Indy. Agholor, who caught 104 passes for 1,313 yards (12.6) and 12 scores in 2014, posted a 4.44 "unofficial" forty with a 1.53 10-yard split last week in Indianapolis.

ESPN's Mel Kiper called USC WR Nelson Agholor "a high-floor player if he's working with a decent QB."
"Match 4.42 speed with a dependable skill set as a route-runner and mostly reliable hands and you have a high-floor player if he's working with a decent QB," Kiper wrote. Agholor posted a 4.44 "unofficial" forty with a 1.53 10-yard split last week in Indianapolis. Unfortunately, he dislocated a finger during catching drills and missed the remainder of the event.

USC WR Nelson Agholor is "very similar to Marquise Lee," an NFL scout said.
His name is Marqise, but we'll let is slide. "Slender build," the scout told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "Good speed, not special speed. Good hands. Probably will make his mark early as a returner. He can line up in all the spots inside and outside." Agholor caught 104 passes for 1,313 yards (12.6) and 12 scores in 2014. He posted a 4.44 "unofficial" forty with a 1.53 10-yard split at the combine.

USC WR Nelson Agholor dislocated his finger during Combine catching drills and will miss the remainder of the event.
Agholor posted a 4.44 "unofficial" forty with a 1.53 10 yard split. We are bummed Agholor won't be going through the 3-cone or 20 yard short shuttle, since he might have posted some of the best times in those areas. Agholor wins with a considerable amount of quickness and burst before and after the catch.

One NFC South scout tells NFL Media draft analyst Lance Zierlein, that USC junior WR Nelson Agholor is "good value in the middle rounds," because of his "return-game potential."
"Right off the bat, his draft value has a ceiling because he's a slot receiver," the scout told Lance Zierlein. "At least that is how I see it. I don't think he has the speed to get open outside. He's a good value in the middle rounds, though, because of his return-game potential." Agholor brings some versatility with his skill-set, as the accomplished returner returned four punts for scores in his three seasons at USC. Cody Kessler’s favorite target recorded 104 receptions for 1313 yards and 12 touchdowns for the Trojans last season.

ESPN's Kevin Weidl notes that USC junior WR Nelson Agholor is comparable to former USC teammate WR Robert Woods.
"Interested to see how Agholor will run. But his details, tempo and spatial awareness with routes is comparable to former teammate Robert Woods," Weidl tweeted. In the first year as the Trojan's go-to receiver, the 6-foot-1, 185 pound Agholor, hauled in 104 passes for 1,313 yards and 12 touchdowns this year. Weidl added in another tweet that Agholor "doesn't have an elite trait but he's well-rounded" and has the "versatility to handle multiple roles" at the next level.

NFL.com's Charles Davis believes "another year with Trojans wide receivers coach Tee Martin could do wonders" for USC junior WR Nelson Agholor.
"Agholor has the size and is playing at a high level," Davis wrote. "He's a great technician and hard worker, too. I still think there's room for him to help himself at the college level going up against Pac-12 competition, though. He faces good talent every day in practice at USC and could really vault himself up the board with another year of seasoning." While this isn't the best receiving draft class, Davis is probably right in his assessment. Agholor, a skilled prospect who has slapped down 97 catches for 1,223 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, could make a case for Round 1 if he returns to school. If he declared, Day 2 is the best-case scenario.

The LA Times spoke with one NFL scout who believes USC junior Nelson Agholor is a perfect No. 3 WR.
The scout adds " slot receiver, and return specialist" to Agholor's projection. The evaluator highlighted slot targets who can win over the middle, find windows in zone, separate versus man, and the run after the catch. "He's got some of that to him," the scout concluded. Unless a number of USC eligibles return for one final season, expect Agholor to declare for this spring's draft.

Scouts want to see USC junior WR Nelson Agholor "be more controlled and reliable with his routes," according to CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.
"Agholor was limited to only four catches and 35 yards against the Bruins last season so he'll be looking for revenge this year and scouts want to see him be more controlled and reliable with his routes, field awareness and process finishing catches," Brugler writes. The USC prospect had the most productive game of his career versus Cal, hauling in 16 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday.

If USC junior WR Nelson Agholor decided to leave school early, he would be a second round pick, observes CBS Sports' Dane Brugler.
"Although not viewed as a first round prospect, Agholor, who is only a junior, will have a tough decision to make after the season, possibly following in the footsteps of former USC wideouts Robert Woods and Marqise Lee by leaving school early to be a second round pick," Brugler writes. The USC prospect put on a show versus Cal, hauling in 16 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday. Agholor "tends to be a little wild in his movements at times, but he runs hard and picks up speed as he goes, showing surprising toughness as a finisher to get every yard he can," according to Brugler.

NFL.com's Bucky Brooks observed that USC junior WR Nelson Agholor showed off superior "route-running, ball skills and run-after-catch ability" in posting 216 yards against Cal.
Brooks called Agholor's performances earlier in the year a "mixed bag," but has been all-in on the receiver as of late. That'll happen when a prospect puts up back-to-back 200-yard receiving games. According to Brooks, Agholor's game is still "ascending." This bodes well for the receiver's prospects, as "scouts plac[e] a heavy emphasis on the way a prospect finishes the season." Agholor is also a skilled returner, which will help his stock with teams that might not necessarily view him as a No.1 receiver.

Entering the season, TFY Draft Insider Tony Pauline had an initial low grade on USC junior WR Nelson Agholor, but notes that he has proven him wrong.
"Entering the season I gave Agholor a very low grade and have been proven wrong. The dynamic receiver has impressed scouts all season long and he turned in a career performance against Cal last week with 16 receptions for 216-yards and 2-scores," Pauline writes. Agholor has now had back-to-back 200+ yard games and also has four straight with 100 or more yards. Pauline notes that Agholor is a "terrific timing receiver who creates after the catch and has a nose for the end zone,"and Agholor "is expected to enter the draft and fits into the initial 80 picks."

CBS Sports' Rob Rang observed that USC junior WR Nelson Agholor "changes direction fluidly," which allows him to gain yards after he catches the ball.
That same acceleration and ability to change directions also suits Agholor well as a punt returner. He has the vision and patience to set up blocks when returning the ball. Rang was most impressed by a play that got called back on a hold. "Agholor took a quick screen from [quarterback Cody] Kessler, made a Cal defender miss and exploded down the left sideline...weav[ing] his way through traffic for a 78-yard touchdown [that got called back]." Agholor had 216 yards receiving in the contest, marking back-to-back 200+ yard games. He has four straight with 100 or more yards. He hasn't officially declared for the draft, but it was reported by TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline that according to his sources, "odds are high" that the junior declares.

ESPN's Steve Muench and Kevin Weidl noted that USC junior WR Nelson Agholor had "top-end speed."
Agholor has 66 receptions for 863 yards and eight touchdowns this season. The ESPN analysts wrote that if he comes out, the junior is "squarely in Day 2 range." They praised his ability to create after the catch, his smooth route-running and his ability to separate both underneath and vertically. In addition, they wrote that the junior "brings added value as a returner on special teams." Agholor has three career return touchdowns. The reason that Agholor might slip to Day 2 is size. "Agholor is listed at 6-1 and 190 pounds, and must continue to develop strength to hold up in traffic. He also has inconsistent ball skills."

SI 64: Nos. 49-45: Jay Ajayi, Carl Davis, Nelson Agholor, more

Excerpt:

47. Nelson Agholor, WR, USCBio: Steady progression over this three years at USC—18 catches and 341 yards receiving as a freshman, 56 catches and 918 yards as a sophomore, and an impressive 104 receptions for 1,313 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. That 2014 performance garnered Agholor a first-team All-Pac-12 nod and third-team All-America. His 104 catches were the seventh-most in the FBS for ‘14, while the dozen touchdowns paced his conference. Agholor nearly hit the 1,000-yard career mark as a return man, too. He landed on 983 yards combined on punt and kick returns, with four punt-return touchdowns.

Strengths: Sees the field well, helping him both as a receiver and return man. His production bringing back punts (19.1 yards-per-attempt average as a sophomore and 14.6 for his career) may be what gets him on the field quickest in the NFL. Has the vision to pick his way through defenses and the footwork to make decisive cuts in the open field. Solid in his route-running, be it on the outside or in traffic. Comfort level with the latter—not to mention his size—could push him inside as a dangerous slot receiver. Not only manages to find gaps in the defense, Agholor makes himself readily available to his quarterback. Catches the ball and gets upfield. Kept getting better and better throughout his USC career, an appealing trend as he heads toward the pros.

Weaknesses: In a nutshell, strength. One of the main reasons teams may view him as a slot receiver is that he can get banged around outside. He’s terrific once he works off the line, but he cannot always do that when he has to face CBs get in his grill. Similar problems arise when Agholor is asked to block or make contested catches. While energy is there to take on any challenge, the physical ability to battle through contact is not overwhelming. Has enough burst to stretch the field, just doesn’t always make the plays once there. Hands are no issue whatsoever when the concentration is there; when it’s not, he’ll drop catchable passes and make fielding punts a bit of an adventure. Between the hash marks-type threat in the red zone—offensive coordinators won’t be calling any jump balls for him.

Conclusion: Robert Woods caught 40 passes in his rookie season out of USC (2013); Marqise Lee made 37 grabs last year, while battling through injuries during his NFL debut campaign. If he stays healthy through 2015, Agholor has a chance to lap the first-year totals of his former teammates. He will have some difficult Sundays when matched up against aggressive, physical cornerbacks. Overall, though, Agholor's game features the polish to transition well into the league. There are more dangerous overall weapons at WR in this draft, like Kevin White and Amari Cooper, but Agholor will be as solid as they come once the top tier has come off the board.

Pro Comparison: Jarvis Landry, Dolphins (Round 2, 2014)

Thanks Faust for the thread, was about to make one myself.

The guy is dynamite with the ball. Great returner, probably the best route runner in this class, very versatile player. My only question on him is if he's going to be a great fantasy producer or a better NFL pro than fantasy one. He needs to get stronger but I love the guy. I could see it going either way, but he's a sure thing for WR4 on an NFL squad.

Really like this kid. Not sure where his stock will end up but he seems like a solid 2nd round target in dynasty drafts

Nelson Agholor - WR - Trojans

USC WR Nelson Agholor could be selected before UCF's Breshad Perriman and and Arizona State's Jaelen Strong, according to Peter Schrager.

Ahgholor might be listed as a wide receiver, but he wins in different areas of the field and in different ways than Perriman and Strong. Agholor is at his best in the short and intermediate game, creating separation and using speed to pick up yards after the catch. A first round pick is absolutely possible. It is also worth pointing out there is a high degree of variance in teams' boards.

Agholor has absolutely everything you want. Speed? check. Quickness? check. Route running? check. Student of the game? check. Great work ethic? check. Return ability? check. Toughness? check. Decent size? check. How could you not really like the guy? There's nothing to point to that's a negative other than maybe his weight (needs to get a little stronger) or that he's a USC receiver (I don't put much, if any stock into that claim) so it means almost nothing to me.

USC WR Nelson Agholor is moving up draft boards in part because teams reportedly think he can play inside and outside with equal effectiveness.
Agholor's buzz continues to get louder as we get closer to the draft. He's not particularly big (6'0/198) or exceedingly fast (4.42), but was dominant as a slot receiver at USC (104-1,313-4) and can also return kicks at a plus level. If Chip Kelly thinks Agholor can play outside as well as inside, it's possible he'll take the plunge at No. 20 overall.

NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock has eight first-round grades on receivers.

"I've got eight wide receivers with potential first-round grades. Of those eight, I think six will go in the first round," Mayock said. "Kevin White and Amari Cooper are both top 10 talents. I like White slightly higher because he's got a higher ceiling." Of particular surprise on the eight-man list is perhaps USC WR Nelson Agholor's inclusion on a list with mostly familiar names. "Nelson Agholor from USC is perhaps the fastest riser in the entire draft," Mayock said. "He's an impeccable route runner who can play inside or outside. He has tremendous value as a punt returner." Dorial Green-Beckham is the other inclusion not always mentioned by other analysts.

ESPN's Todd McShay notes that USC WR Nelson Agholor "can play inside or outside, and is a smooth and sudden route runner."

"He has average size at 6-0, 198 pounds, but possesses good speed (4.42 40) and is a competitive player," McShay wrote. "He has above-average ball skills and can contribute in the NFL as a punt returner, having averaged 14.6 yards per return with four touchdowns during his USC career." The analyst ranks Agholor as the No. 35 overall prospect. NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock has a first-round grade on Agholor. Agholor, who caught 104 passes for 1,313 yards (12.6) and 12 scores in 2014, posted a 1.53 10-yard split at the combine.

USC WR Nelson Agholor "is a fierce competitor with excellent work habits in the weight and film rooms and takes his role as a team leader seriously," notes NFLDraftScout.com's Frank Cooney.
"Agholor's fascinating footwork will serve well on run-after-catch, but probably as a No. 2 receiver on a team that can also enjoy his entertaining style on returns," Cooney wrote. Agholor recently had a private workout with the Panthers (No. 25) and will soon work out for the Patriots (32). He's going to go at the end of Round 1 or near the beginning of Day 2.

I don't see huge upside but I do see a guy that could put up a TJ Houshmanzadeh type career.

An analytics director says USC WR Nelson Agholor would be a great value if he slips to the second round.

Two months ago, it seemed assured that Agholor would be available on Day 2, but that no longer seems like anything close to a certainty. College Football Focus documented Agholor with a 76.3 percent catch rate, tops amongst receivers. Many of those catches came out of the slot, which ESPN reasons "could reduce his perceived value."

His upside is based on fit for what team he is on. In the right system he could be a year in and out 1000 yd receiver. Wrong system and he turns into Stevie Johnson with a couple good years sprinkled in. The floor is pretty high for a guy like that but when Stevie was good, he was really good (albeit in a poor offense). Give Agholor an upgraded offense and his floor is 800yds/4TD's.

Rotoworld:

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss believes USC WR Nelson Agholor "could be enticing" to the Patriots if he lasts until the No. 32 overall pick.

Agholor is a dynamic playmaker on offense and special teams. Bill Belichick loves versatile players who can save roster spots. Agholor is more likely to be selected in the 20s, but Reiss suggests Agholor could fall further than expected "because of the glut of top-flight pass catchers" in this year's draft.

He was considered early 2nd before all his hype lately. Notntoo far off from 1st status anyways. His floor is really high so he's kind of a safe option if teams don't want to go the Perriman, Strong, or Coates route. Super clean route runner, kind of the Jordan Matthews of this draft. Safe inside receiver with lots of ability there. Could play outside just depends on the offense he goes to and if he gets stronger. Also a very good special teams player.

USC WR Nelson Agholor "is tough and reliable," "can line up anywhere," and is ready-made for a pro-style offense after playing in one at USC, wrote ESPN NFL Insider Jon Gruden.

The analyst also likes that Agholor is a dynamic returner. "He is outstanding after the catch. I don't think he has any fear going across the middle," Gruden said. "I like him better than Marqise Lee coming out, better than Robert Woods coming out, because he can run double moves." Gruden went on to extol Agholor's competitive nature and inner drive. He could provide great value in Round 2.

USC WR Nelson Agholor is "kind of like Jeremy Maclin," one scout told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

"He can play both (outside and slot)," the scout said. "His best things are versatility and route running. You wish he was bigger, but besides that he's pretty solid." Another scout compared him to Marquise Lee because of the slender build and good-but-not-great speed. Agholor posted 178 catches for 2,572 yards and 20 scores in college. "(Randall) Cobb might be a little bit stronger, but it's the same quickness," a third scout said. "He makes people miss. Just skinny." A fourth said: "He's OK. Gets pushed around."

Ummm...wow.

Not a player I liked much. I'm really surprised to see him go this high. Chip is certainly marching to his own drummer.

I will say that I hated the Kelvin Benjamin pick from CAR last year and it worked out great, so you never know.

Cheaper Maclin. We can handle that.

Rotoworld:

Eagles selected USC WR Nelson Agholor with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Agholor (6'0/198) was a two-year starter for the Trojans, securing 179 catches for 2,571 yards (14.4 YPR) and 20 TDs. He dropped just 4-of-117 targets in 2014. Agholor ran 4.42 in Indy, but isn't a true vertical stretcher. He's a Z-slot receiver in the Reggie Wayne mold with arguably the second best route-running chops in this draft, behind Amari Cooper. With exceptional quicks and burst, Agholor was devastating after the catch in college. Because Agholor can win with routes and offers punt return value, he should see the field early. Long term, Agholor projects as a potentially high-volume target capable of racking up 80-plus catches per year. He figures to play outside in the old Jeremy Maclin role with Jordan Matthews in the slot.
