Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (3 Viewers)

Arkells are playing the hockey arena in my hometown in the fall.

Not a huge band outside Canada but this is really cool, the first time I saw them was in this arena 11 years ago opening for Metric. Since then, they've worked up to headlining the tiny dive bar in the city, to playing the college campus, to the bigger dive bar, to the few hundred capacity concert venue and now returning to headline at the big arena.

I've seen them at all those local venues, and larger Toronto venues and festivals and Town Ballroom with @Steve Tasker but I think seeing them come back to the arena as headliners will be super cool (and I hope they sell a decent number of tickets cause they're jumping from 400 to 2000+).
tonight featuring Nick Nurse on guitar

There is a lot to look forward to in Missoula this summer, including the jam-packed and incredibly impressive music line up. For a small town <100,000, we attract a lot of headliners. Maybe that is because we have two outdoor amphitheaters, an outdoor stadium, an indoor arena and world class concert halls, or maybe it is because Missoula has an insatiable thirst for music. Check out all the awesome acts that the summer of 2019 brings to our charming mountain town.

Anybody going to Summerfest?
I'm planning to see Steve Earl Thursday evening. Its sad to see Earl relegated to a 4:00 p.m. weekday show on a sidestage, but perfect for me assuming I can juggle a minor work commitment.  Unfortunately, I'm out of town both weekends.  I am still considering Courtney Barnett, but July 3rd at Summerfest is probably more than my old bones can handle.

Guns N Roses on sale tomorrow for Vegas first week in November.  Can combine with Breeders Cup action in the Sportsbook so intrigued.  Worth going? Never seen.  I know they struggled early to get in playing shape but latest reviews I've seen have been good.  Anybody go?
Saw them last year...our seats weren’t great but it was a good show.  I’d say worth seeing if you like them

Couple of shows to review..

Saw Hootie and the Blowfish last night at the Hollywood Bowl.  It was as expected the Darius Rucker show.  So obvious why he needed to go solo.  He's world class and the band isn't.  Anyway, still a fun show if you're a fan.  Darius still sounds good but the show didn't have the energy I normally see at the Bowl.  They played their top 6 hits or so and some decent covers, including Losing My Religion from R.E.M.  But I expected better.  It seems like Darius is just doing them a favor to give them another payday.  There was supposed to be a new album out.  The tour has already started.  Where is it?? Nothing new at all.  Darius solo is a way better show - he can do all sorts of songs in his wheelhouse.  Him doing Purple Rain as an encore always brings the house down.  Couldn't do any of that with the Hootie lineup.

Barenaked Ladies? I had zero expectations with them as the opening act.  They killed it, especially their encore medley.  Didn't take themselves seriously, actually sang Lady Gaga's "Shallow" which was hilarious, then did rap, then some Zep, hilarious dance moves on stage.  Became a big fan.  More energy with them with the Bowl on their feet then with Hootie.

Saw Doobie Brothers and Santana Monday night at the Hollywood Bowl.  Absolutely love the venue and see as many shows there as I can during the summer.  First time seeing the Doobie Brothers and they were great.  Tons of hits and to get them as an opening act was awesome.  Multiple encores and they were extremely tight.

Santana? Just becoming one of my favorite bands ever.  And it's not just Carlos.  It's Cindy on drums (she is a bad ###) and the rest of the band.  Talk about an amazing musician surrounding himself with other amazing musicians.  So so good. Every single person showed such versatility.  2 or 3 instruments each, vocals that could lead any band.  Guy on keyboards busted out a rap that was great.  This is a better show than at the House of Blues in Vegas.  Longer.  Loved the rendition they did of The Calling that Carlos originally did with Eric Clapton.  Second half of the show crowd was on their feet the entire time.  Lots of jams in a Santana show so you have to appreciate the music without vocals at times but man...Highly recommend if tour still headed to your area.

This sounds amazing.

Santana has been a first round band for me since I taped my gf's pop's vinyl in '85.

He has been around for so many great things like Woodstock, that people often forget how young was at that time - and still is.

I will definitely hit him if he come within range.

Just bought tickets for Elvis Costello in November in St. Pete and New Order is doing a 4 night “residency” in Miami in January. All 4 shows are almost sold out. Tickets went on sale yesterday. Haven’t seen them live since 1989.

I agreed to take the wife and kids to see 21 Pilots last night in Columbus.  They all love them but I'm not really a fan.  I will say the show was entertaining, though.  The entire arena was on its feet the entire time and the crowd was going nuts most of the time, things I don't see all the time at shows.  One thing though, is it's only two guys.  While they seem pretty talented, there was definitely pre-recorded music being piped in.

Lucky to be in a market with so many venues. Like everywhere depends on the show and where you sit.  Santana was $125 in section E on the side next to Terrace boxes. Hootie about the same for a box.
Interesting, so about the same as here in Maryland it seems.  Do you typically get your tickets from the secondary market?

No.  I'm a presale fiend.  I'll use every Amex, Citi, Chase, LiveNation presale I can find.  Even join Fan Clubs at times (did that to get Tom Petty tix). I want tix secured before the general public. I won't ever every pay more than list.  I'll be strategic about the show.  Some shows I really don't care where I sit.  I can sit 2nd level because maybe an aging group, sound will be the same and I'll watch on the big screen.  I'll pay less for those tickets.  If it's high energy (Bruno Mars or great rock band) I'll want to get the best seats I can - lower level low rows on the side.  I always use seatmap on ticketmaster to pick my own seats.  Lots of tricks there.  I always want aisle if possible.  And know what seat #'s in that section are better.  As an example, seat 1 in section E at the Hollywood Bowl puts you closer to the center, while seat 20 on the aisle puts you on the extreme far side.

For high in demand shows (think Stones/Queen) I'll have multiple devices searching at once to give me a better shot.  PC, iphone, ipad, etc.  Finally, little known trick when there are thousands in the waiting room (join these early) is that you can buy over the phone right through ticketmaster.  All automated.  It will give you available seats and you can confirm/pay right there.  I've done that and gotten way better seats then if I would have just hung out waiting my turn.

FYI some of these concerts I'm just refusing to go to out of principle.  Some of the residencies in Vegas are just out of hand.   I've seen Aerosmith a bunch of times, I'm not paying what they are asking in Vegas.  I've seen the Eagles a bunch of times, I'm not paying the $500-$1,000 they are asking for that show at the MGM.  Only exception I made was for the Stones.  Thinking last time I'll ever seen them, dropped big but list price coin to be on the floor to see them next month.

Ok, I’m the same in that I want to pick my seats but I always use the secondary market since I don’t pre sale and I almost always want to be close.  I’ll keep checking the secondary sites and move when the tix i want are in the range I want to pay.  For example Hootie tix here at merriweather are like $250 for decent pavilion seats.  I may wait until the afternoon of and get them for $120 or I just don’t go.

A Santana concert was my first date with my wife. That was 22-23 years ago? Loved it!!!!!!

Just got back from a weekend at Solid Sound Festival (ie Wilcofest)  My fourth time to the festival and it never disappoints

took the whole fam, wasn’t exactly sure how it’d go. Kids did well...ended up going to sleep about half hour into Wilco last set each night.

Courtenay Barnett was great...more “grungy” than I expected, and I loved it. Here is her doing “karaoke” of Handshake Drugs w the band https://youtu.be/e4vaOSUJ-wo

Wilco was spot on both nights. Tweedy quipped about apologizing for playing a song off Wilco Schmilco which was hilarious, as he knows the crowd leans toward the older stuff. Actually most of their set seemed to pull from Ghost is Born which is one of my favs.  Couple of numbers from Mermaid Ave also which were cool

edit to add: played what might be my fav guitar solo ever also in Impossible Germany

For a band that I never heard of that killed it...check out https://youtu.be/1pqvY9Oh0tQ if impatient jump ahead a min or two as it builds a little slow. This guy was an amazing guitarist. Out of Niger, and the crowd was going nuts for these guys

Very cool.  Love Courtney Barnett.  Saw her at the Greek last summer.  Mdou Moctar - very interesting.  Got into the sound as they could definitely jam but those vocals.....

Saw Bob Seger during his run at DTE Center in Clarkston MI, Bob is getting a little long in the tooth but Detroit loves him and he still sounds decent.  Was a good party time.

I'm sure everyone wants to know that I saw DMB last Friday night. Deer Creek in Noblesville - night 1 of a 2 night run. Awesome setlist. Awesome night.

The venue is a good one - we were seated under cover of the amphitheater but he lawn behind us was huge (and full). The sound was muddy for the first few songs but something got smoothed out after that. Good energy in the crowd. Fun night.

Just bought tickets to see Wilco in November.  One of my favorite bands I’ve never seen before.
Same here on all counts.

I’m also going to NYC to see MMJ in August, wife organized a group to go from Boston for the night for my 50th. Was hoping to see them at Red Rocks but dates don’t work. This should be cool though - pretty small outdoor venue.

Where are they playing?

I went to Judas Priest last week in LA. Halford still brings it. It's amazing that his heavy metal screech is as strong as ever at 68. As only a casual Judas Priest fan, I was disappointed that they didn't play most of the handful of songs that I know -- You've Got Another Thing Comin', Painkiller, Electric Eye. But I became a fan of Victim of Changes. Halford ended the show by urging the audience to keep heavy metal alive, then shouting "We are Judas F'ing Priest!"

I am extremely tempted to see The Cure/Deftones/Mogwai play Pasadena on August 31st, but at one hundred and seventy-five dollars for a day/night festival, I fear the price may be too steep and my old legs too unwilling. Well, it's actually more the legs. The last festival I went to was five years ago, and I was so damn tired. Plus, you never know what sort of sets you'll get from those three veteran bands. You could be spending that quid for a downbeat set, something that would be disappointing.

Saw Jeff Lynne's ELO last night in Tampa, and man what a fantastic show. The music, the lights, the vocals, the harmonies...everything was dialed in. Incredible musicians and killer stage show, what an experience.

Seeing one of the last living Traveling Wilburys do Handle With Care live was  amazing and easily my favorite of the night. Jeff had Dhani Harrison (surprisingly good opening act and George Harrison's son) join him on stage to play guitar and sing his dad's parts of the song while vintage footage of the Wilburys played on the massive screens on stage...so good.

Other highlights from the setlist included Evil Woman, Don't Bring Me Down, Do Ya, Turn To Stone, Sweet Talking Woman, Living Thing, Telephone Line, Mr Blue Sky, All Over The World, Xanadu, a cover of Chuck Berry's Roll Over Beethoven...just a ton of great stuff.

Going to see Young the Giant, Fitz and the Tantrums, and COIN tomorrow night.  At an outdoor amphitheater and it is supposed to be around 95 at the start.  Going to sweat my ### off.  Hell of a lineup tho.

Also have tickets to see Portugal, the Man later this month.

Wife and I have always been into music but have just started going to concerts as we have more free time w/ the kid in college.

I saw the Cure Live in Hyde Park Anniversary from 2018 last night at the only movie theater in the area showing it last night and I have to say I was blown away. It was awesome. For any of you that are Cure fans, I hope you get to see this on some streaming service or something else soon.

Going to see Andrew Bird and Tift Merritt tonight. Looking forward to the show, but not the heat.  I'm going to sport my new cooling towel tonight. It's going to be 87 and muggy at 8 pm.  :X

Fitz is great. Saw them for free as part of the NHL All Star weekend Tampa has a couple of years ago. Great energy and just fun all around.

I haven't been to a concert since Van Halen's Balance tour.

Tonight, my daughter and I are sitting in the Palace Theater getting ready to see The Struts!

It's a proud parenting moment for me, for sure.

Opening act was The Glorious Sons. They were REALLY good.

The concert was very good, and although it was hot out, there was a breeze that helped make things cooler. I still sported my cooling towel, and people were dodging me as I was snapping it to activate the cooling process. I think it was activated the best when I snapped one of my friends right in the ### with it. Tift opened the show, and she was great. Andrew Bird was great too, and I loved the two cover songs he did, which were Gentle On My Mind and If I Needed You.

Bird's new album "My Finest Work Yet" is excellent.

Punk legends Flipper last night.  David Yow is one of punk's greatest frontmen .  It was the last night of the tour and his voice was shot so he compensated by provoking the audience.  Flipper has always attracted an ###hole element no matter how old  their audience is.  The pit was way too much at times but I guess that's part of the experience.

8 of us going to see Queen Saturday night at the Forum. Glad I’m not chasing these prices on Stubhub. $200 seats going for $600-$800.

Went to New Orleans to see the Stones - on Monday instead of Sunday due to "Hurricane" Barry. Drove down on Sunday where it was only raining for the final part of the drive into New Orleans. City was dead on Sunday as I've never seen it - we went to dinner at Nina Compton's place - American Bywater Bistro (James Beard winner) and about 30 minutes in were joined by Ronnie Wood and an entourage. Great Dinner - went to Frenchmen St and saw a really good supergroup at d.b.a. with no one there. It was Sunday but it was still empty of Frenchmen. Called it a night around 2:30AM. Monday rested and caught the Stones at Superdome. Great opener with Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk joined by the Soul Rebels. Did a great Dr. John Right Place Wrong Time and Earl King's Street Parade.

Stones were very good- although that Dome gives off an echo that you have to get past. Highlights were a starting JJF with the "crossfire hurricane" an Under My Thumb , acoustic stage had an Angie (which I haven't heard live in I don't know how long) - Midnight Rambler was the usual bright star of the show. They got the boogie going on that. Finished strong with the usual warhorses Gimmie Shelter and Satisfaction. Go see it if you can.

After the show in the outside mayhem found our Uber and headed over to the Maple Leaf to catch the one and only - the greatest in my book - Mr. George Porter Jr. Wow what a night, since his show was rained out on Friday at the Leaf with his Runnin Pardners he did 2 sets. Rocked a Cissy Strut, Fire on the Bayou and a bunch of other Meter and George classics. A crowd pleasing Grateful Dead's "They Love Each Other". Left there at around 4AM after talking to George and Corey Henry - exhausted.

Ain't No City like New Orleans -- Earl King

Howard Jones Sunday night in St. Pete

ETA: 1 1/2 hour weather delay at a venue which is pretty much a sectioned off parking lot next to a sports bar (Ferg’s). We bailed. Weather is rough tonight. Be safe HoJo.

Went to see The Aristocrats last night.  Guthrie Govan and Marco Minneman blew me away.  Hard to come come up with a better pair of virtuoso’s playing together at the moment.  They have so much fun together and they all 3 feed off of one another.  Caught Buckethead last month.  He too is unreal, and it amazes me that he can get that much out of a show as a solo act.  The month before that I saw Dweezil Zappa playing his dads stuff (which is my favorite).  Dweezil’s show was my favorite of the three as I know all of his dads material and he does an admirable job.  Having said that, The Aristocrats simply amazed me and I will listen to them a lot going forward.
