Concerts thread - FBG's lovin' live music, we're back in action! (4 Viewers)

Genesis kicks off their American tour at the United Center in Chicago on Monday. I got tickets on the floor.

I have never seen them before and am looking forward to seeing Phil in person. I know he is suffering through a number of ailments, but I have read that he really goes all out with his performance.

I have also read that there is a wide disparity with what era the fans want to hear, with not much middle ground. There are those who can name check all twenty-two cuts on "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" and then there are those who share the Patrick Bateman perspective on the Genesis catalogue.

Wife and I saw Marty Stuart on Thursday at Florida Theater, a small theater downtown from the 1920s.

Older crowd. Band sounded great. Played a lot of covers from old blues to Woody Guthrie to Waylon and Willie.

Saw CAAMP on Friday at the fillmore in Philadelphia.  I've really come to love this band.   They only have a couple of albums but not a bad song on them.   The fillmore is a really cool small venue.   Its about 2 hours from me so not close but will definitely be making the trip back.

Going to see Session Americana mid-November
I bailed from this show. It was in Easton MD as was I but it was outdoors in a tented facility open on all 4 sides. Temperatures were dropping through the low 40's and winds were over 15 mph. I can do those temps while active, but sitting still on a small couch for 90-120 minutes was going to be pure punishment. Was so relieved when my wife wanted to bail.

They're great live, and I probably won't get to see them for another year, but staying at the hotel drinking and watching Netflix instead of shivering was a good choice.

I'm still bummed he was a late cancellation for his show here in September.

Genesis put on a great show in a full house at the United Center in Chicago. A lot of energy and very tight, focused and happy sounding.

Phil is....not well. He's ailing. His vocals were strong, and he put in serious effort, but physically he's diminished. It was difficult to watch him hobble to the stage with a cane and sit immobile, slumped in a chair, for the duration of the show.

There was a balance between the 80's hits and the 70's era. I have to admit that I did not immediately recognize Fifth of Firth or Duke's Intro or Duchess. They did all the big hits except for those that had horns in the original recordings like No Reply At All and Paperlate.

The end of the show was emotional. After the encore, and the introductions of the supporting players, the stage emptied in darkness and then a few minutes later the lights suddenly came up and then standing in the spotlight, center stage, was the original three of Collins/Rutherford/Banks. They were locked arm in arm and took deep bows. They got 20 thousand Chicago fans standing in ovation, a long, sustained cheering.

Phil referenced several times that they had been together for fifty years. There is the sense that this is it.

Hoodoo Gurus show cancelled for next May. No idea why, but it sucks.

Front Line Assembly just announced a show here the week after the Hoodoo Gurus were to play.

Also got my Tears For Fears tickets today.

Seeing Nitzer Ebb in a couple of weeks. Missed them the last time they came to town so looking forward to the show. Last time I saw them was opening for Depeche Mode in 1990.

To date, I have 9 confirmed concerts next year (2 are way out of town in Milwaukee and Philly), 1 spoken word show (Henry Rollins), and 1 comedy show (Tig Notaro)

Nice. Saw Nitzer Ebb in 1990 with DM as well and again in 1992. Had tix a few years back, but visa problems kept like half of them from being able to enter the U.S., so I just bagged out.

Jealous about FLA - never saw them.

I am going to check out The Black Angels tonight. I don't know anything about them. I saw they were in town tonight so I pulled up a you tube video and watched one song. They seem cool, I am looking forward to hearing something new tonight. I have no idea what the crowd scene will be like but I am guessing psychedelic from the video I saw.

Same here. Didn’t seem worth it at the time. This will be my first time seeing FLA. They’re playing small venues so should be interesting.

Looks like Nitzer Ebb’s frontman, Doug McCarthy, is out for the remaining US shows due to illness (not Covid). Bummer, but I’m still going to the show Saturday night.

Question about TicketMasters verified fan program if anyone has used it.  Is there any actual benefit to enrolling or is it just another way for TicketBastard to find a way to spam me more than they already do?  I had to sell my Iron Maiden tickets in 2018 to attend a good friends daughter's wedding and thought I missed my last chance to see them (at least in the US).  However, with a new album (which I really love so far, especially the drumming) has them coming to the US next fall and I want to see them in Detroit (and maybe Columbus as well).

Not all the tickets are available for verified fan pre-sale.   If you're worried a show is going to sell out then sign up for it.  But IMO it's just a way for them to create panic buying.

Just saw them last night in Philadelphia. Totally agree with your review. I thought musically the band was great, The lighting and video effects were great, and I really enjoyed Nick Collins on drums. Phil definitely was giving it all he could, but definitely his ailments affected his singing, most notably his timing (he was late on a lot lines) rather than his vocal quality. I think the addition of two backup singers to support Phil was a great idea, and all in all, I really enjoyed the show. I would have liked to see them do more older songs, but I understand why they chose the songs they did. Duchess was definitely a high point for me, that song has really grown on me over the years, and it is now one of my favorite Genesis songs.

Thanks!  I panicked even further and joined The Iron Maiden Fan Club for $35 so I could have access to the pre-sale the day before the TicketMaster pre-sale.  Likely over doing things, but this is huge for me as a fan all the way back to their beginning.

Found a video of the show. They look cold. I'll get to watch it tonight, warm and at home.

Just caught Jason Mraz's 20th anniversary tour... stripped down to (mostly) him and his percussionist from the Java Joe's coffee shop days (Toca Rivera). Was able to grab 3rd row dead center... which is huge for small acoustic shows like this.

The GF LOVES him and I really enjoy his live shows. One of our first dates was seeing him as an unknown at a college bar with ~50 folks in April 2003.

He's Written off as bubblegum but the guy is talented and a great entertainer.

Played a fantastic set. Very chatty / funny. Engaged the audience and had a blast. Toca was sadly on vocal rest. Hung out post show and signed stuff at the stage for a while.

Of note... best merch deals I've ever seen from an artist of his stature. Nice 18x24 prints signed by he and the band? $25 😳. High quality tote bag? $5 (the GF loves totes). Fun sunglasses the GF liked? $5. Most artists charge more than $25 for a print, let alone signed.

Bought my first ever tickets to a stadium show - Foo Fighters at U.S. Bank Stadium. I'd seen Van Halen twice at Target Center, but this will be a different animal.

Of course, all the best tickets are gone and while my daughter and I are fans, we weren't interested in breaking the bank to attend either. Ended up just shy of $100/ticket.

So I know the sound will be garbage sitting in the upper deck but at least we're in the front row up there so my 5 foot tall daughter won't have someone standing in front of her.

Dave puts on a helluva show

Starting to line up a # of summer shows.  Still have Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Chris Stapleton, Kenny Chesney, Matchbox Twenty/Wallflowers etc on the calendar and just added Santana w/ Earth Wind and Fire. Will probably add Foo Fighters.  Not much planned for early spring which is fine as it's going to be rough the next few months anyway with cancellations.  Hoping summer is much better.

Doing Dispatch/OAR, Jack Johnson, Tedeschi Trucks finally at red rocks all this summer.   Going to some festival in Tempe  in Feb headlined by Foo Fighters just b/c I'll be there but I get to catch Caamp again by good fortune which is the real score for me.  Things are heating up.

We saw my 14yo son play percussion in the Juilliard pre-college symphony last week in Juilliards gorgeous performance hall. These kids are insanely talented, and floppinho was featured a lot on snare and timpani (one of the percussionist kids was stuck playing triangle the entire night).

Had the feel of the last live performance for a while.

Hes considering doing a session of school of rock performance- options are: The Clash (my vote) or GNR vs Aerosmith...which might be better for the drummer. Thoughts about best option for him?

Cool! The Clash are one of my favorite bands, but I’d vote Aerosmith and GNR. Would make for a more fun live set IMO.

Umphrey's McGee last night.  They were without their lead guitarist due to a last minute family issue, so that kind of put a damper on things.  Still a pretty good show.

Got tix for Graham Nash in March. First concert since moving to NC (from NY) last year. Bonus - my NY concert buddy is coming to visit.

Buddy gave me Beth Hart tickets to a show last night that had been rescheduled for much of the last 2 years.  Undeniable talent.  First half of the show was so-so, too much belting for my liking.  2nd half was much better.  When it's her and a piano she's awesome.  Anyway, good to get back with some live music.  Kenny Wayne Shepherd coming up next month

OMG, OMG, OMG ---- just announced 2nd leg of the Opeth/Mastodon tour.   Stopping in Milwaukee at the end of April!!!   0% chance I miss this.   I was stewing for about a month that I should have driven out to Colorado for that show, this will save a ton of money.

Canada's been behind in opening back up, so I've been to one concert in the last two years (New Pornographers playing Mass Romantic, in the fall). I've kept buying tickets and most have been rescheduled, not outright cancelled and most rescheduled as early as possible once everything is full capacity, so I have a big run coming up (a lot are smaller Canadian bands, playing my hometown).

  • March 18 - Arkells
  • March 26 - Born Ruffians
  • March 29 - PUP
  • April 1 - Blue Rodeo
  • April 16 - Glorious Sons
  • May 14 - Elliott Brood
  • June 16-19 - Bonnaroo, I think...?
  • July 9 - Manchester Orchestra
  • Sept. 23 - The Killers

Blue Rodeo is awesome. Wish they would come down here to Texas.
