RB Dalvin Cook, Free Agent (2 Viewers)

Cook's 4 TDs Highlight Vikings Win, Historic Day Against Packers

The running back's monstrous day was also a historical one in a Border Battle, as he accounted for 226 total yards and four total touchdowns at Lambeau Field.

That scrimmage yardage total is the second-most by a Vikings player in team history against the Packers, trailing only the 256 total yards by running back Darrin Nelson in 1983.

And according to a stat provided by the NFL, Cook became just the fifth player in the Super Bowl era with 200-plus scrimmage yards, at least three rushing touchdowns and a receiving score in a single game.

Anyone else shocked he was back in up two TDs? I was kind of wanting him to sit at that point. Tells you all you need to know when the guy gets 30 carries after being injured and his highly touted backup barely sees the field.

Dalvin Cook rushed 22 times for 206 yards and two touchdown in the Vikings' Week 9 win over the Lions.

He added two catches for 46 yards on two targets in the passing game, hanging a total of 252 yards on Detroit. He was steadily picking up 8-10 yards on what seemed like every carry. Cook's day could have been even bigger, but he was stuffed on a second-and-goal carry from the one-yard line before an Irv Smith one-yard score the next play. Cook's first touchdown was a five-yard scamper that was initially ruled down at the one. His second busted the game wide open from 70 yards out early in the fourth quarter. Over the last two weeks, Cook has totaled 478 yards and six touchdowns against the Packers and Lions. The NFL's leading rusher now, Cook has scored in every game this season and gets a road date with the Bears in Week 10.

right now its hard to argue anyone is near as good as he is, save maybe CMC, assuming he's healthy. Those 2 are in their own tier now IMO.

PRIMETIME PROPS: VIKINGS AT BEARS

Excerpts:

Alexander Mattison OVER 25.5 Rushing Yards (-115) — PointsBet Sportsbook

Dalvin Cook OVER 86.5 Rushing Yards (-106) — BetMGM Sportsbook

Removing the Week 5 game that saw him go down with an injury, Cook has topped this rushing prop in four of his past five games. He has doubled the prop in three of those five outings. Cook is averaging 122.6 rushing yards per game and just over 20 carries per game. If he didn't have four runs of 35 yards or more, Cook's number of carries would also be significantly higher. He is one of the best backs in the league and sees one of the largest roles on a weekly basis.

Betting Mattison's prop hedges any chance that Cook gets hurt but it can also hit on the same night Cook's OVER hits. He has played six games with a healthy Cook this year. In those games, Mattison is averaging 6.5 carries for 30.7 yards. Minnesota is currently third in the NFL in run percentage with 49% of their plays resulting in a carry. However, even that doesn't show just how run-heavy they want to be. When tied or leading, the Vikings run on 58% of their plays. If Vegas is right and they win this game, both Cook and Mattison can get there.

Dalvin Cook OVER 2.5 Receptions (+100) — DraftKings Sportsbook

Dalvin Cook OVER 16.5 Receiving Yards (-115) — William Hill Sportsbook

When looking for OVER props to bet, keep going back to Cook. He has played in two games that were decided by fewer than six points and has five targets in each of those games. The matches when his team either loses or wins by a lot are that he lacks as a pass-catcher. Luckily for Cook, his team is favored by a modest, 3.5 points versus the Bears. At even money, his receptions prop is worth a bet. His receiving yardage prop is an easy bet even with a bit of juice. Cook has topped 16 yards in four of his past five games and his lowest mark over that span is 16 yards. The only scenario that would eliminate him from hitting the over would be Minnesota crushing the Bears early with Cook catching no passes. That's not out of the range of outcomes but it is unlikely enough to happen that his receiving yardage total is worth betting as well.

Dalvin Cook rushed 30 times for 96 yards in the Vikings' Week 10 win over the Bears.

Cook was bottled up for most of the game and only managed two runs over 10 yards. Both came in the final quarter. He saved his day in PPR leagues with four receptions for an additional 16 yards. Despite Cook continuing to get stuffed for minimal games, Minnesota refused to try anything different. Even while averaging 3.2 yards per carry, Week 10 was Cook's fifth game over 100 total yards in his previous six outings. The only game that he didn't hit that mark saw him exit with an injury. Even in the games where Minnesota's offense looks ruined, Cook is likely to post a solid fantasy day. He remains a viable candidate to be the RB1 overall going forward.

There have been moments where I thought Mattison could get more touches.
My cousin and I were talking about how much energy the Bears defense had at the start of that game and really for most of the first half. I am not sure if any RB was going to be able to do well against how they were playing. So why not have Mattison in there for a few carries early on? The Vikings used to do that with Latavius Murray. Have him run fresh at the start of the game and beat up the defense a bit before switching to Cook.

They want to start strong is the main reason I see for not doing it that way. The game was never in hand enough to not use Cook late in the game where every 1st down was important.

Sounds like no CJ Ham and possibly no Ezra Cleveland this week...not a reason to worry about Cook but it will make a difference...

I think Mattison could have got the same amount of yards per carry Cook was getting. I understand Cook has the ability to break one at any moment, but 30 carries for 90 yards seems like a lot of abuse. We need this guy down the stretch. So do the Vikings.

Dalvin Cook rushed 18 times for 61 yards and caught 4-of-4 targets for 21 yards in the Vikings' Week 12 win over the Panthers.

Essentially everything worked against Cook on Sunday. The Panthers defense was physical up front, scored twice, and put the Vikings into negative game script for the second half, which led to a season-high 45 pass attempts for Kirk Cousins. Cook also was limited in the second half by an ankle injury, although he was able to return just one drive later. It was as bad of a day for a running back projected for 25-plus touches, yet he still scored double-digit PPR points. Hopefully his ankle doesn't swell up too much ahead of Week 13 because Cook has a monster ceiling against the Jaguars if he's healthy.

Vikings OC Gary Kubiak said Dalvin Cook is "just kind of beat up" right now.

Since returning from his midseason injury, Cook is averaging 29 opportunities across five games as a near every-down bellcow. That role comes with plenty of bumps and bruises as the season rolls on. Last week, Cook suffered an ankle injury, something that could limit him in practice this week. Kubiak said, "He’s just beat up. He’s been hit pretty hard the last couple of weeks taking some poundings. It’s at that point of the season, so we’ve got to get him freshened up this week and get him back to being himself." As long as he's able to practice this week, Cook will be an elite RB1 play against the Jaguars even if his workload is slightly scaled back.

Dalvin Cook (ankle) will play in Week 13 against the Jaguars.

The issue isn't Cook's status for Sunday, but coach Mike Zimmer's recent remarks that he'd like to "be smart" with Dalvin's touches moving forward. Sunday presents an opportunity to do so since the Vikings are favored by -10.5 points at home and implied to score the second-highest total (31) of any team on Sunday. Alexander Mattison still has sketchy standalone value since he would likely only be used if this game gets drastically out of hand. Fantasy players should still consider Cook an RB1 despite Zimmer's comments.

I don’t believe for a second that Zimmer is going to scale back Cook’s touches. The guy can’t help himself. Unless Min is up by a ton on Sunday (probably won’t happen with that defense) I’m sure he’ll get his usual huge amount of touches.

File this under “coach speak of the week”.

While Zimmer has the last word he isn't the only person making this decision.

As a person who closely follows the team this isn't coach speak at all. It is the chorus of people around the team constantly focused on Cooks workload, his contract, how long Cooks career will be and if his contract is worth it. They keep asking the coaches questions about this and for good reason. Cook has missed a lot of playing time.

Kubiak talking about Cook being banged up is in response to Cook only having 22 touches in the most recent game instead of 30. Cook was hurt on his fumble and he sat most of the 3rd quarter before returning.

If by usual huge amount of touches you mean 22 for Cook I agree. If you mean 30+ I don't agree, I think they will use Mattison some instead.

We’ll see what happens. I have my doubts they will go away from Cook if they find themselves in a competitive game. The Vikes still have a chance at the playoffs and are going to do all they can to get in. I don’t think Zimmer and Kubiak will be thinking about Cook’s contract and counting his touches late in the 4th quarter of a close game. They’ll do whatever they think gives them the best chance to win, and that has shown to be using Cook as much as possible. As I said earlier, if it’s a blowout I could see them using more Mattison than usual. I just don’t see the Vikes in many blowouts the next few weeks given their defensive struggles.

If he is truly banged up I've got to think Mattison gets more than his normal % of touches. At this point the coaching staff knows Cook's history of injuries.

Also, I think Zimmer is coming around to the idea that with this offense, he doesn't have to go ground and pound all day long. He's got a hell of a dynamic duo at WR with Theilan and Jefferson. Jefferson is the real deal and Rudolph is no slouch.

I don’t disagree that Zimmer SHOULD realize that he doesn’t have to ground and pound when he has those weapons available at WR, I just don’t know that he does. Ground and pound running is in this guy’s DNA. I think he still only wants to go to the pass if necessary. I also think he wants to limit Kirk’s pass attempts to prevent turnovers. With MIN’s defense this year they have found themselves in more shootouts than usual, but I don’t think that’s by design.

His value must be at an all time high. In PPR dynasty, I offered the Cook owner Golladay & my 2021 1st (He needs WR help badly) & he countered asking for CMC straight up for Cook. I declined FWIW

I own both Cook and CMC in one league and I consider them roughly equal.  I would have declined your Golladay and 2021 first as well unless it was a top 3 rookie pick.

While I think golladay is a great player, he hasn't played in awhile so I would be hesitant to make that trade even if I need WR help.

WRs like Galloday are a dime a dozen these days.  A running back like Dalvin is not.  I would trade CMC for Dalvin either, but Dalvin has been lights out and barring injury there’s no reason to view him as anything other than a top 3 running back for the next few years.

All-time high? At what time in his history as an elite player has Cook ever been traded for something like Golladay (good player but is he even a top-15 dynasty WR? He’s way older than people think for how long he’s been in the league too) and a 2021 1st (which I’m assuming isn’t impressively high at all since you didn’t specify and since you’re dealing for a win now RB—I’d guess it’s a back half 1st?)

Your leaguemate overshot in his counter (probably as a shot across your bow), but asking for a top-5 dynasty RB in exchange for his top-5 dynasty RB is closer than what you sent, for most people (again just my opinion).

I picked up Golladay off the waiver wire a couple of weeks ago in a redraft league. He had been dropped to make room for Rex Burkhead.

I agree with this. Although I would still take McCaffrey over Dalvin, such trade is closer than Golladay + a 1st. Maybe because Golladay is overvalued, idk.

I would hope his value is at a peak right now since he is the best RB in the league right now.

Your offer only shows you dont understand that.

If he needs WR help then why would he want Golladay who isnt healthy enough to play? How is that fixing his need?

Regardless Cook is worth more than that unless you think that CMC is only worth that.

Wow. For fellow Cook owners, are you all cutting Mattison for Boone based on this news?
many Viking homers care to chime in on how they see the distribution behind Cook going forward (ie Boone and Abdullah would form more of a committee)
As I said above I think the Vikings are less likely to use Boone or Abdullah to spell Cook than they would with Mattison. So I see this as somewhat forcing their hand to use Cook more, even if they might like to rest him a bit right now.

If I were to pick one of them up it would be Boone over Abdullah.

Issue with Boone is he doesn't always see the field well to read the defense or his blocking.

Issue with Abdullah is fumbles.

The game Cook missed against the Falcons turned into a disaster and they couldn't run the ball in that game. So the Vikings have been leaning on Cook more since then.

Both Boone and Mattison have failed fantasy players who have picked them up with dud games in Cooks absence before. So I hope no one goes overboard with their expectations if adding Boone.

Would you rank either above Pollard as a handcuff?
Personally, I have Pollard and now Boone rostered. For the next 3 weeks, I’d much rather have Boone. Cook is incredible, but his injury history is troubling and he’s yet to play a full 16 game season. He’s clearly wearing down, and I’m still in awe that last week’s ankle injury wasn’t serious. I was sure it was a season ender, but he miraculously returned to action. I know Boone let people down in the fantasy playoffs last year, but he’s a decent player and could start on other teams.

With regard to Pollard, he’s a superior talent, but behind arguably the most durable RB in the league. I don’t own Zeke, but stashed him earlier this year in the hope that they put Zeke on the shelf the last few games of the year. With nothing to play for, maybe the Cowboy brass chooses to sit him.

No.

I like Pollard as a player more than Mattison.

I get it why Mattison has been a highly valued handcuff because of the coaches and scheme.

Boone got his shot last year in week 16 but laid an egg. Then he had a big game week 17 when most peoples fantasy season was over.
Interesting thing about Mattison and the potential injury timeframe, Hooper missed two games and a bye included for the same procedure. So if we’re looking at 3 weeks, the soonest Mattison would be back is week 15 or 16? Makes Boone seem like more of a priority. But will the Vikes just split up the run work and pass work between Boone and Abdullah? They seemed to have Abdullah rather heavily involved  last time Cook was out, but that may have just been game script relates as the Vikes found themselves down so much early due to Kirk’s picks.

I have mostly seen them use Abdullah as a receiving option.

Boone started ahead of Abdullah week 17 last year. So that suggests he would get more opportunity in a situation where Cook was not available.
