______ Passed Away Today, RIP (1 Viewer)

80s one-hit wonder Benny Mardones died at age 73.

Two different versions of his big hit Into the Night charted in 1980 and 1989.
From your first link:

In 2000, [Mardones] was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease -- though he still performed regularly until the mid-'10s, when his condition started to become more unmanageable. In 2017, he announced that a performance of "Into the Night" at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in New York would be his final time playing the song.
Here is that final performance, December 16, 2017 at age 71.

I just watched the final performance of Into the Night. Then what I guess was the video when it was released. Then a live performance when he appeared to be in his prime. What a song. That was his baby and sang it perfect. Here is the story of how he wrote it.

Brings back memories of the soundtrack of my youth. Sorry to hear he passed but at least he will live on forever because of one hit.

Better to be a one hit wonder than a no hit wonder.

Awesome wiki entry on the theme song for M*A*S*H (which was also used in the movie.)

Mandel wrote the music, but the story behind the lyrics is hilarious:

The song was written specifically for Ken Prymus, the actor playing Private Seidman, who sang it during the faux-suicide of Walter "Painless Pole" Waldowski (John Schuck) in the film's "Last Supper" scene. Director Robert Altman had two stipulations about the song for Mandel: it had to be called "Suicide Is Painless" and it had to be the "stupidest song ever written". Altman attempted to write the lyrics himself, but upon finding it too difficult for his 45-year-old brain to write "stupid enough," he gave the task to his 14-year-old-son Michael, who wrote the lyrics in five minutes.

Carl Reiner 😢

The greatest Second Banana of all time. There are people who are mad & funny, and there are people who make comedy happen. A wild little guy joins the writing staff of Your Show of Shows and, first day, he's riffiing as a Jewish pirate, "Oy, the cost of sailcloth these days and Murray da jeweler aint giving what he used to for doubloons", etc. Next day, a Catholic topic comes up and the established Reiner cues the new writer to riff again by asking if he was at the Crucifiction. Boom, the 2000-yr old Man and one of the great partnerships in comedy history is born. Reiner & Mel Brooks had dinner and watched Jeopardy together every day since their wives died, til very recently i'm sure

Very little of recorded comedy has a long shelf life cuz most of it has the funny but not the context. Reiner was the guy who had the context and is the big reason why his projects have such staying power. I am enfeebled by his passing and i cant say that about many. RIP -

I think that speaks to comedy at large.  There is what I call "clap-plause" where the alleged comic is just saying political stuff in a humorous way for applause and if you don't like it, "it's just a joke; RELAX!"

Comedy should be something that holds up a fun house mirror at our lives and realize that there are many things that transcends the human condition.  Stuff that everyone can relate to and that everyone understands.  Can it play on stereotypes and how we view each other?  Absolutely.  If we realize that we all have things about us which are legitimately funny, we'd all be better off.

Hugh Downs, 99. Didn't know he was still around. Co-host of 20/20, host of Today and as Jack Paar’s sidekick on the Tonight Show
Eminent and exceptional broadcaster, sought nothing but to bring television signal into American homes with class & vitality, and did so as well as anyone ever has.

The first TV personality i ever fell in love with was Today Show host Dave Garroway. Dave had the broadcaster thang, but he also had a little of the Ernie Kovacs edge and the Jack Paar curiosity and he made understanding stuff a joy & a quest, just what li'l wkkid most hungered for (plus, he had a monkey). i bawled & fussed for weeks when he quit, but his replacement, while he had none of Garroway's special qualities, kept the fun if not the funny, and everything was pretty alright if he presented it. It wasnt long before me Ma knew again that, if i was was up, Today should be on. Actually, it was under Downs' watch that Today became a juggernaut, just as Tonight did under Carson. Boy, could TV use more of his even-handed piloting today. RIP -

Carl Reiner was the first celebrity in a bit that stopped me in my tracks, honestly I thought he had passed already but whenever one of Danny Ocean's crew goes down it hurts a little more.

It was delightful how they included him and made him a big part of the films. He added so much weight to the films and he carries himself off screen in a way you admire. He lived such a complete life, hard to really be sad except for selfish reasons.

Ennio Morricone at 91.

Extreme sadness.
I was on a tour of Italy last fall and our Italian guide liked to talk about various famous Italians. He had mentioned numerous ones.

About half way through the trip, I asked him why he hadn't yet mentioned the greatest film composer ever, Ennio Morricone.

He beamed with pride as we discussed Morricone's soundtracks.

After we got back on the bus, the first thing I heard was Deborah's Theme from Once Upon A Time In America playing through the speakers. He looked over at me and winked with a big smile.....

Nick Cordero, broadway actor. 95 days in ICU. 41 yo. Healthy. Fought a good long fight. RIP
Oh wow, it felt like he was going to pull thru, young man leaves behind a lovely wife named Amanda and a son named Elvis.

My heart goes out to his wife, she is trying to be a mom to a 1-year old while she is losing the love of her life to the Covid-19. If that story doesn't grab some folks for a second then you don't have much of a heart IMHO.

Great story. I drafted the OUATIA soundtrack in the recent Desert Island Draft. One is my favorite movies and soundtracks.

RIP to one of the best in the business.

And I believe his son made way way way more money off that theme song than Altman made from the movie.

the #### Van Dyke Show is truly a timeless comedy, still funny today.  Of course the Jerk is still one of the funniest comedies as well.  RIP
Truly. I watched the episode where Mary accidentally leaks that Reiner wears a wig on his Alan Brady Show. The confrontation between them at his office is a total classic. That show and episode holds up so well. RIP
