Star Wars The Last Jedi Episode 8 thread: this thread sucks, you should avoid it even after you've seen the movie (2 Viewers)

When Kylo said, "Let the past die. Kill it if you have to" it was the director talking to Lucas and Star Wars fans. imo.
It could be meta like that, but he is not directing the next two movies, so we will see if the other directors agree with him.

I am less excited now than I was before watching Ep8 at the news, but I do like the fact that he is given the next trilogy (in theory).  It is good to have a single vision with this stuff.  Howerver, I do find it odd (if what I heard was true) that they gave it to him without him having a story in mind for those 3 movies.

It will be interesting.  Of those three, IMO it was more about Ford making that character so damn good.   If the casting is not spot on for this movie, it will be DOA.
Just go grab a young Harrison Ford. They’re all over the place.  Easy peezie.

You have no idea how many socks were ruined by Carrie Fisher going around bra less in ANH and in a gold bikini.
:lmao: this is true

You can only say that from the pulpit when someone else builds the cathedral.   Be very careful who you throw out with the bath water.  I don't know if kids still play with toys, if its more of a video game age (which I understand has been a let down) but the toy sales are down.  Its a legacy brand, be very careful telling your legacy to F off.

A 50 year old guy isn't going to see some entirely new story with no grounding and connection to the past and they've taken almost every step to put that kind of connection on life support.  We'll see if it gets salvaged in the next go round or this is new world.  Milenials don't have the same attachement to this property gen X does.  If you're making the past meaningless, you're devaluing your own property and brand.  If thats their choice, good luck, even from a corporate crass marketing standpoint I would think this is a shaky choice

But we will get to watch it play out.  I've frankly lost faith in the creative but I'm now finding the business side of it fascinating.  Bold choices as I've said, none that I agree with, but I'm just some jerk in the cheap seats.  Interesting to see how these wheels spin.

Seems to me a ship aimed at a Death Star at light speed would take it out, no?
In real life kamikaze missions would have taken out innumerable destroyers, battle ships, enemy bases, carriers, etc. But this tactic was rarely employed. Even after the Japanese used it in WW II. Just sayin'...

Don't really care about Solo...my preferred one-off movie (or series) would be Boba Fett.

That is the movie that should be made...and with great consideration and care...
And it will be made if Solo goes well. I feel like a trilogy of anthology movies is sitting there. Solo-Boba-Lando

Let's go find help from a guy with an unsavory reputation - The guy who they went to find help from can crack codes and shoot a blaster is a pimp-looking high roller (fbg, probably) and is completely trustworthy according to Maz. Nothing about his reputation is unsavory. Now the guy they find seems way more shady than Han. You weren't that surprised to find out that he sold them out. But you can't make it mentally work to have Han sell out Luke and Obi Wan. Han is both more and less reputable than the codebreakers at the casino.

in a place of ill repute - Just because it's a casino doesn't mean it's a place of ill repute. The biggest scofflaws in the joint, who got thrown in jail, were parking illegally. Someone getting beheaded by a lightsaber and then the place starting again with one drum beat it is not.

frequented by all sorts of aliens we haven't seen before - eh.

sort of under imperial control - There is zero indication that the First Order is there at all. They're being chased by casino bouncers and security. That's like saying your local mall is sort of under imperial control.

and escape on the ship he is flying after being chased - You got 1 thing right.
I've only seen it once so maybe I missed the line, but I don't recall Maz saying he's completely trust worthy. Just that he could get the job done. And she seems to have a crush on the dude. Maybe I'm just assuming code breakers would have a questionable reputation but I really don't recall Maz saying he's completely trustworthy. Han absolutely could have sold out Luke, Leia and Ben. He at least pretended to be in the mission for the money, then his conscience got the better of him. Chewie hanging out with him after the prequels changes that dynamic a bit imo. (Meaning Han wasn't as bad as his rep)

Fair enough on the casino being a "legit" establishment only financed largely by dealing with the first order (some by the rebels, but not nearly as much).  Rose sure didn't like the place and indicated unsavory activities happening there. Maybe not the clients, but the management seems to have questionable character.

Still the scene seemed entirely too familiar. But then it has to be tough to be original 9 films in.

Sort of agreed. I'm hoping Chewie is a big part of the Han story.

Say what now?...

Numbers quoted vary, but at least 47 Allied vessels, from PT boats to escort carriers, were sunk by kamikaze attacks, and about 300 damaged. During World War II, nearly 3,000 kamikaze pilots were sacrificed. About 14% of kamikaze attacks managed to hit a ship.

According to a U.S Air Force webpage: Approximately 2,800 Kamikaze attackers sank 34 Navy ships, damaged 368 others, killed 4,900 sailors, and wounded over 4,800.

From what I have read, a movie about Obi Wan is the most likely next anthology movie although nothing is set yet.

I don't think we will see a Lando stand alone movie since I think we are going to get a ton of him in Solo.

I don't think these movies are made for me any more. Teenage daughter's loved it.  They seemed to actually care who Finn ends up with as a love interest.  Meanwhile the limited internal techno babble consistency of the star wars universe is shattered.  Should have known the second JJ Abrahams was given the reins, any b.s. goes.  Hopefully the star wars story movies are good like rogue one. These main story movies though, just meh. The biggest problem is the bad guy. The Snoke / Kylo duo is laughably bad compared to the Emperor / Darth Vader.  Hux is a cartoon, I mean consider Tarkin as a contrast. Rey is good as a hero but fighting emo boy who smashes his helmet into walls and destroys computer panels is just not worthy of her time.

Holy balls you people suck. I think some of you are forgetting how comically bad some scenes in the original trilogy were. It is nearly impossible to make a movie that 45 year old nerds and teenagers will love
No no its not. The original trilogy i can watch with my daughters everyone is satisfied. Rogue one we watch with great glee!  Even Phantom Menace and Revenge of the Sith work.  We all love the majority of the Marvel movies. We still quote Gaurdians of the Galaxy.  Dunkirk worked for us on many levels. Madagascar 2 hilarious to this day. Dawn of Justice we will all see again and have a good time. Force Awakens and Last Jedi? I won't be pushing to see for sure.

The original trilogy is laughably bad at times. The reason everybody loves it is because they were kids then.

My wife LOVES 7-8 and Rogue 1 but can't get through the original trilogy. The acting and script is too awful for her. Her first time seeing it was right before TFA -- I imagine most people seeing it for the first time at age 30 would feel the same. When my son is old enough to watch I don't know if I want to start him with 4-6 because he might think they are all that..."classic"

You mean like as bad as near dead Force Leia in this one?   Maybe not as bad as Anakin surfing on the back of those things on Naboo, but it was definitely a low point in this series for sure.
I feel sorry for you good buddy. First it was Game of Thrones, now Star Wars.

Solo is an interesting test.  Were hamill, ford and fisher the stars or Luke, Han and leia ?
Given their acting chops in the last two movies (uniformly awful) let's hope the characters were the stars.   This series desperately needs better acting.

Disney is bracing themselves for the Han Solo movie to bomb. They were worried about it before all The Last Jedi controversy, but now they’re essentially writing Solo off. The lead actor, Alden Ehrenreich, can’t act, and they had a dialogue coach on hand for all of his scenes. On top of that, the script is unworkable. It’s going to be a car crash.

I can't believe I had the theatre experience I wanted for Star Wars in friggin Jumanji last night.  Theatre was packed.  I actually had to sit in one of the two chairs on the outside of the stairs all the way at the top and later stragglers were filling the orchestra part.  It was only polite clapping at the end instead of a thunderous standing ovation, but there was audible studio audience, "awwwwwwwww" when the socially awkward main characters shared their feelings for each other, and solid laughter sprinkled throughout.  I was surprised I liked it at all.  The previews were so cringe-inducing. It wasn't nearly as terrible as expected though.

I’ve heard the lead is horrible - and Disney is prepared for it to bomb.  Could just be internet rumors and I’m sure I’ll love it either way.

ETA - what that guy posted

Just saw this yesterday. I thought that was kind of obvious. That was the whole point of the movie. All the original characters are gone now (with Carrie Fischer being actually dead). Time to move on.

I'm not as dedicated to the series as some on here so I'll just say I really enjoyed the movie. And, as always, look forward to the next one.

But let me add that I have enjoyed the #### out of every single one of these movies.
There has been some very good actors in Star Wars.  Harrison Ford, Samuel Jackson, Natalie Portman, Billy Dee Williams, Ewan McGregor and now Daisy Ridley have all provided good performances in Star Wars.

For the life of me I'll never understand why they didn't push this back after Howard came on.

That also explains why we haven't seen one trailer and hardly even a photograph.
do you know why Disney chose Memorial Day to start with?

I thought they originally wanted 1 Star Wars movie a year so I was unsure why they only separated TLJ and Solo by 5 months.  Star Wars 9 is still slated for Dec 2019

Next person to go see this again - I am curious about the final scene with Luke and Kylo Ren.

My recollection is that prior to the main attack, they showed a rebel/resistance soldier walking on the salt flats, and they showed a close-up of the red planet under his footsteps - obviously foreshadowing the "red" trail under the mono-skis.  But, I wonder if it was also attempting to foreshadow Luke's "trick".

I know in the Luke v. Kylo scenes they focused on the feet a couple of times - but I can't recall if they were showing that Luke was moving his feet, and no salt foot prints were left (or were they showing Kylo Ren's footwork?).  Or, was that entire area already cleared of the salt from the ongoing battle/laser blasts?

Just curious.  Thanks!
I've watched this scene with particular attention to their feet twice now, and what happens is that whenever the camera focuses on Luke's feet, he'd move slowly and measured while Kylo Ren's feet were stomping and dragging.  I did notice that the first time around, and then I thought they were showing the personality differences between the two in a symbolic sense and not giving an actual hint to Luke's physical body.  I've seen this movie three times now, I still think the scene and camera use is doing both simultaneously.

I left the theater wanting to see it again.  My 8 year old daughter has loved 7 & 8 and RO.  She mostly likes the first 6 and we watch them now and again.  We are both looking forward to Solo (good or bad) and Ep IX. It was a nice escape, didnt feel like 2.5 hours long like some movies can.  Sure some of it was poor (Leia force flying in space, Casino Planet) but overall we enjoyed it.  Was it the best ep ever?  No.  Was it as bad as I or II?  Hell no.  Probably on par with III, VI

V, IV
RO, VII
VIII, III, VI
II
I

Nostalgia probably puts IV and V above the rest.  Marginal difference in the first three rows for me...
