How can people love Rogue One so much?

It has arguably the least and worst character development of any of the films in the series. The only character who has believable development and is the most likeable over the course of the movie is a robot. And not Wall-E, T2, this whole movie is about me, robot. C3PO-esque sidekick robot. Jyn spends the entire first half to two-thirds of the movie telling the Rebellion to screw off. She didn't care, didn't care care, didn't care. Sees dad die for 30 seconds? The entire Rebellion says, "Welp. We can't do this. This is what we spend our entire lives, risking our lives, doing and this we're not going to do." All of a sudden, hey guys, I saw my dad die! Let me go all Braveheart on you! Because now I am the most fervent Rebel in the universe! Meanwhile the black guy is all, "We have to absolutely torture this guy. He could be here to kill me and we have to be sure." The next day bombs are landing all around and he's all, "Welp. I've had a good life. I'm just gonna hang here. Nice seein' ya." Sure, the last 90 seconds or whatever is awesome. Perfect segue from end of that movie to the beginning of A New Hope. But the rest? Echoes of Prometheus character level bad.

Kind of hard to do too much character development when everyone is going to die.

I liked Jyn.  I liked the robot.  I liked the blind dude.  I liked the General in charge of the Death Star - much better General than Hux.

The first half of rouge one sucks.  The last hour is star wars heaven with the battles.

Say what now?...

Numbers quoted vary, but at least 47 Allied vessels, from PT boats to escort carriers, were sunk by kamikaze attacks, and about 300 damaged. During World War II, nearly 3,000 kamikaze pilots were sacrificed. About 14% of kamikaze attacks managed to hit a ship.

According to a U.S Air Force webpage: Approximately 2,800 Kamikaze attackers sank 34 Navy ships, damaged 368 others, killed 4,900 sailors, and wounded over 4,800.
The point being that the practice was not widely adopted even after having been shown effective. Why do you suppose that is?

do you know why Disney chose Memorial Day to start with?

I thought they originally wanted 1 Star Wars movie a year so I was unsure why they only separated TLJ and Solo by 5 months.  Star Wars 9 is still slated for Dec 2019
No I don't. I figured once they moved 9 back to December they would do the same with Solo. Maybe they don't want Solo to taint/associate the December thing they got going on.

I left the theater wanting to see it again.  My 8 year old daughter has loved 7 & 8 and RO.  She mostly likes the first 6 and we watch them now and again.  We are both looking forward to Solo (good or bad) and Ep IX. It was a nice escape, didnt feel like 2.5 hours long like some movies can.  Sure some of it was poor (Leia force flying in space, Casino Planet) but overall we enjoyed it.  Was it the best ep ever?  No.  Was it as bad as I or II?  Hell no.  Probably on par with III, VI

V, IV
RO, VII
VIII, III, VI
II
I

Nostalgia probably puts IV and V above the rest.  Marginal difference in the first three rows for me...
Rogue One

Empire

Force Awakens

Last Jedi

New Hope

Return of the Jedi

Sith

Clones

Whatever episode 1 was called

I'm always more than willing to suspend belief in universe mechanics. Faster than light speed? Sure. Force that moves things? Sure. Floating out in space and not dying? Well, ok. Force. But when people act completely ####### stupid in ways that make sense, it ruins the movie. Because that's not a disbelief that I can suspend. So for me, Rogue One was pretty bad. Certainly nowhere near the top of the franchise.
I went in with low expectations so I was happy.  I don't rank R1 in the top three like some though

I believe 9 is slated for May 2019, a year after Solo.

In a universe where semisentient astromech droids can fly a light-capable starshipmwith no humans on board, I can't imagine why it wasn't widey adopted...or even just hyperspeed munitions.

that was the original date but was changed a while ago to December.  JJ fought with Disney on TFA to get the latest date possible so he might have affected 9 as well when he accepted the directorial duties.

I rank Phantom Menace very low, like most do, and yet I have to acknowledge that it contains two of my favorite moments in the entire 9 movie collection.

1) The scene in the hanger when the door opens, Qui Gon and Obi toss their capes and Maul displays the two sided saber for the first time.  Near perfect music and tension.

2) The scene where Qui Gon is locked in the room fighting Maul and Obi can't get to him.  McGregor does his best acting in his 3 movies in that one scene.

Ironically, both of these scenes had no dialogue for Lucas to screw up :)

Seems to me a ship aimed at a Death Star at light speed would take it out, no?
In real life kamikaze missions would have taken out innumerable destroyers, battle ships, enemy bases, carriers, etc. But this tactic was rarely employed. Even after the Japanese used it in WW II. Just sayin'...
Let me know when a destroyer, battleship, enemy base, carrier, etc.... has the power to destroy an entire planet.

If they could, I think a suicide mission might be better option than letting them get a shot off.

I really loved the end of phantom menaces saber fight.  The fight ends poorly with mauls dumb death but 95 percent of it is great. Too bad the story was garbage

Thanks, I guess the info I recently read was old.

Maybe.  In the original movie...there were no Rebel capital ships in the area to test this theory out.

I saw it a fifth time last night. Still can't get over the light speed kamikaze scene.

I did pay close attention to Luke's feet in the kylo face off. He doesn't make any foot prints. It's pretty subtle though something you'll be able to see more clearly on a DVD where you can slow motion it.

Other than some of the cheesy dialogue, I still think this is a great movie. It's in my top 3 better than rogue and TFA not as good as 4 and 5.  I am very curious which direction they go in nine.

Just sat down for a 1030 showing with my girl. Soft reclining seats dead center and we are the only ones in the theater. Booya!

Will report back in 3 hours with my review.

I liked it a lot more than TFA. Much more of the action that was missing from episode 8. I thought things were pointing towards Kylo redeeming himself, him defeating Snoke and the order in the next film, then banging Rey to create a super Jedi but I’m glad I was wrong because that would have been predictable and formulaic.

The following is likely due to the holiday season but it is still pretty good news.

*The box office receipts for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for TLJ were all individually higher than the same days on the previous week.

TLA is at $934m now and should easily crack $1b this weekend world wide, and that is still with out China opening yet who by themselves should provide between $120 to $130m to the total.

$2 billion is likely off the table but a very healthy $1.5b is still possible.

Shut it down.

Just saw it again. You have to be a real dork ### loser to hate this movie.
I won’t say I hate it, but I wasn’t thrilled. Seen a 2nd showing today. I’m convinced the first ten minutes set a bad tone for me. First with Poe’s crank yankers bit. And then it was cemented by Luke tossing the saber. Johnson shows an incredible overhead of the island, with building dramatic music, Rey climbing the hill to meet Luke; it called for something so powerful with the first words Luke had spoken in 40 years. And I get another ####### joke. That was just a bad mood to be set into, imo. I feel like I never recovered from those two scenes.

This is exactly what happened to me. The first time seeing it I was put off right from the start.

Saw it again yesterday and liked it much more. Still lots of pretty major problems, but it's a fun movie with lots to enjoy. I gave it a 3 or 4 out of 10 after the first viewing. I'd give it a 6 or 7 now and put it above the prequels and probably TFA, still behind R1 and the original trilogy.

I actually thought the scene with Luke was great for that very reason. Here is all of this anticipation, not just for us but for Rey as well to learn from this powerful Jedi. She gets to luke and he is like yeah f this.

I thought it was similar in many respects to Luke’s own journey looking to find the great yoda and finding some deranged Kermit the frog / missy piggy love child living in a swamp.

Appreciate that POV, just didn’t work for me. Like I said, especially after Poe’s act it just bothered me overall. I would’ve even appreciated Poe’s joke had he not come right back and ruin Luke’s introduction back to the story with another joke.

And he did what he could to separate his SW movie from what we know, yet in this instance we’re supposed to appreciate the similarity with ESB? I thought we killed the past.

If they don’t show how Han saved Chewie to incur the blood debt then the film is a complete failure.
Are you kidding me?   They’re going to milk that for everything it’s worth.    Just like the whole franchise has been ridiculously over done.   I can’t believe I paid good $ to see another episode of this crap.

Poe leads a mutiny, fails miserably, the captain’s reaction is that he’s an adorable flyboy?   Bombers in space?   That whole plot line about getting the hacker on the casino planet and sneaking aboard the enemy ship was a waste of time.   Poor Snoke, we barely knew him.   That fight against the red suited bad guys was horribly choreographed; it should have had a soundtrack of Danananananana BATMAN KERPOW!  BAM!   Benicio Del Toro didn’t need to be in the film for any reason.   That dark hole on the island was a great big waste of time, after a kinda cool lead in.    Who gives a #### who Rey’s parents were?   And the reveal on that uninteresting question was pathetic.   At least she’s not part of the increasingly dysfunctional Skywalker family,

Did you like anything about it?

I’m not kidding you but I don’t know what they have planned. I’m not scouring the net for leaked scripts.

In all seriousness all of this stuck out to me as well. The biggest problem now is it’s not being helmed by Lucas. Yeah he’s technically a lousy director in most regards but he weaves a great multi film space opera arc. The new incarnation of the series just doesn’t have the same feeling. One you can’t quite put your finger on but you can tell it’s missing.

People have been talking a lot of crap for a long time about the prequels but I always found them entertaining. Yes the acting and dialogue is often ridiculous but it’s not what SW is about. It’s just supposed to be fun.

This current trilogy tarted our taking itself too seriously and haphazardly injecting the amusing and campy bits. It’s supposed to be the other way around. SW is pure camp with just enough serious tone to keep us emotionally involved.

Despite all the faults you pointed out there is overall one big thing that stood out to me.

That the Yoda puppet in this movie looked so much worse than the original from 40 years ago. That’s innescusable.

But I’m drunk so what do I know.
