QB Patrick Mahomes II, KC (3 Viewers)

Pat Kirwan spoke to an NFL QB coach who believes Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes has the best "arm talent" since Brett Favre.

Kirwan calls Mahomes "Raw and not ready but worth it!" In today's NFL, we aren't sure what this means. Quarterbacks drafted in the top two rounds rarely get to sit and wait until they are "ready," and even fewer successful ones were considered raw. The likeliest scenario is a team selecting Mahomes with a top 50 pick with an offensive coordinator willing to shift things around to fit the quarterback's strengths and weaknesses. That happens less often than we all think. Mahomes has a strong chance of being a first-round pick.

An NFL executive who spoke with NFL Media's Daniel Jeremiah said that Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes will "check every box in Indy [at the NFL Scouting Combine]."

The executive said that "everybody will be talking about him after the [C]ombine." Earlier on Thursday, Ian Rapoport reported that Mahomes (as well as Davis Webb) will be taking part in throwing drills and the like in Indianapolis. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mahomes is one of the more intriguing quarterback prospects in the 2017 pool. He already has the size and the arm chops for the NFL. Don't be surprised if he sneaks into the back half of the first round this spring.

In an interview with Mike Florio, Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes revealed he received a second round grade from the NFL Draft Advisory Board.
Mahomes obviously declared based on that feedback, and there is some buzz that he could be the first quarterback off the board. It is all up to flavors and types in this year's quarterback class, and Ian Rapoport noted some in the NFL view Mahomes as the top prospect at his position. Mahomes will be a second round selection at the latest.

An NFC scout says Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes "definitely has the tools to be a No. 1."
"He's big and athletic with big-time arm talent," the scout said. "I know his numbers are inflated but he can make all of the throws. I think the kid can play. ... I like him a lot!" The 6-foot-3, 230-pound gunslinger threw for over 11,000 yards with a 93/29 TD/INT ratio across three seasons. Because he's coming from an Air Raid offense, even Mahomes' staunchest supporters see him as a developmental prospect in need of a long-term development plan. But Mahomes does have support, but inside and outside of the NFL. Ian Rapoport told the Setting The Edge podcast recently that several evaluators have pegged Mahomes as their "favorite quarterback" in the NFL Draft.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline is "concerned" about Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes' "downfield accuracy as well as the fact that the Texas Tech offense does not translate well to the next level."
"I’m mixed on Patrick Mahomes," Pauline wrote. "I understand why people are intrigued by the Texas Tech signal caller; he’s tough as nails, plays the position with vision as well as awareness and is not afraid to challenge defenses vertically. ... Like the other top quarterbacks in this draft, the potential is there for Mahomes but there’s also a large degree of downside and risk." Mahomes is the most divisive of the top-five quarterback prospects in this class. Analysts and NFL teams both disagree about whether his skills neatly translate to the next level. Heck, the Rotoworld NFL Draft team does not agree about Mahomes' NFL value.

According to NFL Films producer Greg Cosell, Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes lacks "any refinement and polish at the position right now."
Just by following Cosell's work for the last handful of years, we feel Mahomes is the opposite of a Cosell-type quarterback. The evaluator prefers big, strong armed passers who are confined to the pocket. Mahomes can work inside of a structure, but he thrives outside of it and on broken plays. There is some buzz of Mahomes being the first quarterback off the board. He is a completely unique talent, and the NFL has a difficult job processing that. As they should.

NFL.com's Lance Zierlein spoke to an NFC executive who believes Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes will "drive his head coach crazy for the first couple of years and there is no getting around that."
Mahomes' style is rarely seen in the NFL, and produces success at an irregular level. We think Mahomes is a really fun player who has a playmaker mentality, but he thrives outside of structure. The NFL prefers prospects to have a successful comparison, and it is difficult to find one for Mahomes. With all of that said, Mahomes could still be the first quarterback off the board.

Appearing on the Setting the Edge Podcast, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport revealed some NFL evaluators consider Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes as the top QB in the draft.
The hosts of the podcast suggested Mahomes might be a pick for the Cardinals in the second round, with Rapoport interjecting "if he makes it to round two." The first round quarterback discussion largely centered around Deshaun Watson, Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer, but it might be time to throw Mahomes' name in the hat. Mahomes is a completely unique player, so some teams will fall in love and others will rank him outside of the top five prospects at the position.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline hears that "the quarterback most intriguing to scouts" at the Senior Bowl is Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes.

"His arm strength, general accuracy and upside has many believing he could jump into the second round if he throws and interviews well during the combine, Pro Day and individual workouts," Pauline writes. The 6-foot-3, 230-pounder was as prolific as they come during his time with the Red Raiders, throwing for 11,252 yards (63.5% completions) with a 93/29 TD/INT ratio over the course of three seasons. He will need to adjust as he moves on from Tech's Air Raid system, but the intrigue is very much there for a Day 2 selection.

Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes measured in 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds at the NFL Combine.
His hands are 9 1/4 inches. Mahomes hit all of the thresholds, as did the other top quarterbacks, so any conversation questioning size should evaporate. As of now, Mahomes' evaluation is generating the most buzz and momentum.

One NFL scout told Fox Sports' Peter Schrager it is "hard to see" Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes playing in his first year in the NFL.

If he is a first round pick, Mahomes will see the field during his first year unless he is behind a quality starter. Why do we know this? Every first round quarterback since Jake Locker has started at least one game in their rookie season. That has to be a part of the conversation for these teams when considering Mahomes. On the Rotoworld Football Podcast, Matt Waldman discussed his comfort with Mahomes' possibly playing during his rookie year.

Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes "created some buzz" on Saturday at the NFL Combine and "showcased the arm talent that has a lot of scouts intrigued," according to Scouts Inc.

"The ball jumped off his hand and finished with a lot of energy," noted Steve Muench and Kevin Weidl. The duo ticked off a series of questions the NFL still has about Mahomes -- he often didn't play within structure in Tech's Air Raid system, his size is decent but not great and his mechanics need refinement -- but were encouraged by what they saw in Indianapolis. "Mahomes might not be as NFL-ready as most of the quarterbacks in the class, but his physical skill set and ceiling might be enough to entice teams to take a shot on developing him somewhere in the Day 2 range," they wrote.

Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes "put on an impressive display" at the NFL Combine, according to ESPN's Mel Kiper, and proved "that he can make all of the throws."

After measuring in at 6-foot-2, 225 pounds, Mahomes finished No. 1 among QBs in the 20-yard shuttle (4.08 seconds) and No. 3 in the three-cone drill (6.88). He added a strong 4.8 40-yard dash. "He's extremely raw -- his footwork and mechanics on tape are maddeningly inconsistent -- and the air raid system in which he played will likely cause some hesitation among teams," Kiper wrote. "From all I've heard, however, Mahomes is a sponge who wants to learn and develop, and he'll work hard to learn the playbook when he's drafted." The analyst believes Mahomes is "entrenched" as the fourth quarterback in the class behind Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer. As such, Kiper is predicting Round 2 or 3 for the Red Raider gunslinger.

An NFL scout compared Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes' improvisational ability to John Elway's.

"You (remember) how John Elway could scramble around and at the last second just square up and throw the ball the length of the field?" said the veteran scout. "This guy can do the same thing. He didn’t play in a bowl game this year but, remember, John Elway never played in a bowl game. (Texas Tech) had the worst defense in the nation. He had no backs and receivers this year. Excellent athlete and arm strength. He’s got a gunslinger mentality." That said, some scouts continue to question Mahomes' ability to transition from an offense that featured limited reads. "He plays in that junk offense and has a lot to learn," another scout said. "A lot. He’s got quick feet and a (big arm). 4.0 student. Good kid." A third scout quoted in the story wasn't optimistic about Mahomes' chances: "He could (develop) but I don’t see it. He has no vision, no mechanics. He’s erratic as hell. Makes a lot of mistakes."

The Chargers put Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes through a private workout last week, according to ESPN's Eric D. Williams.

The team's head coach, offensive coordinator and position coach attended the workout. Expect many teams with established starters to look towards the future at the quarterback position. Philip Rivers, at 35 years of age, is ending his run of high guarantees on his contract. We would not be surprised if teams without obvious quarterback needs dominate the quarterback draft market.

Cardinals team owner Michael Bidwell and head coach Bruce Arians attended a workout for Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes, according to Ian Rapoport.
It is uncommon for an owner to attend such events, but Bidwell can be hands on. Remember, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie joined his staff last year to visit Carson Wentz and Jared Goff. The Cardinals are one of the teams with a future need at quarterback, a spot that might be addressed in this draft to jumpstart the progression. Mahomes' big arm certainly fits the Cardinals' vertical style.

Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes leads drafts prospects with 18 total visit and private workouts, according to Aaron Wilson.

We struggle to find 18 teams who have an immediate quarterback need, or clubs who might be looking for a future signal caller in two or three years. Mahomes is a unique quarterback prospect in this draft. There's a valid argument stating Mahomes does not have a clear comparison of success in the NFL, but many times unique prospects create their own mold.

NFL Network's Mike Mayock was complimentary on the whole when it came to the pro day showing of Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes.

"The big-arm throws that most quarterbacks don't like to make: 20-yard comeback, cover-2, throw in between the corner and the safety -- he threw both of those beautifully," Mayock said, adding that "[t]he deep, outbreaking routes where you really got to drive it, he was outstanding." No surprise to us on that front, as Mahomes tosses perhaps the best deep ball in the entire 2017 class. Not all was sunshine and gumdrops, though, with Mayock noting that at times, Mahomes appeared to be focusing too much on technique and footwork, leading to a lack of drive on some of his 68 throws. The fact that Mahomes has shown a clear effort to improve his throwing technique and footwork probably matters more than the fact that those aspects of his game are not quite as developed yet. Mayock floats the Saints and Cardinals as two NFL outfits which (due to veteran starters Drew Brees and Carson Palmer) could serve as nice fits for the Texas Tech gunslinger.

Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes met with Baltimore Ravens OC Marty Mornhinweg on his pro day.

Mahomes' pro day work is being met with good reviews for the most part, with NFL Network's Mike Mayock writing that the Texas Tech gunslinger was making "the big-arm throws that most quarterbacks don't like to make." Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline, meanwhile, notes that Mahomes " lined up under center and took snaps, something he rarely did in college. He handled the ball well and there were no bobbled snaps. His footwork looked much improved dropping into the pocket from under center." There is still work to be done honing his technique, but all indications point toward this pro day set of drills being one that should reassure teams of where the quarterback is in his development. He may well have sewn up a selection late on Day 1 with this work.

Draft Analyst's Tony Pauline reports the New York Jets "have strong interest" in Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes.

Pauline was asked not to go into further detail on the matter by his source, so for the time being, "strong interest" is the most we can pass along. Unfortunately, the Jets do not fall into Mahomes' draft sweet zone. Pick No. 6 will almost certainly go elsewhere and New York does not pick again until No. 39 -- at which point Mahomes will probably be off the board. Keep an eye on them as a potential team to trade back into the first round near the end of Day 1 should they decide that Mahomes is their man.

Don't know if it was one of the linked articles in here or another but it said that Mahomes has had the most team workouts/interviews of any prospect. 18 different teams it said.

The Steelers hosted Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes for a pre-Draft visit.

Steelers' offensive coordinator Todd Haley previously attended Texas Tech's pro day. While Ben Roethlisberger hasn't confirmed that he'll be back in 2017, Steelers team president Art Rooney II expects him to return. Even so, it's clear that Pittsburgh has begun the search for his heir apparent.

Remind me please, what's the flaw with Mahomes? He's, in my opinion, quite clearly the #1 qb prospect in this draft and should be considered a candidate to be drafted 1st overall

Inconsistent footwork, sandlot player, throws without touch a lot of times, air raid system QBs don't have a lot of success in the NFL

By "sandlot player" I see someone with Rodgers/Romo level upside in terms of scrambling ability and pocket awareness.

Typically, those air raid qbs who failed as pros didn't have the measurables Mahomes possesses.
