RB James Conner, ARZ (2 Viewers)

I think its kind of funny how a guy described as the "bell cow" by his coach a few weeks ago is being written off by the fantasy community based on 6 carries in week 1 :)  .. I somehow doubt he lost his job after 6 carries and an injury just because his backup looked good against the Giants.

This is what i think happemed.

Conner got off to a slow start.

Coaches asked what happened and he said he sprained his ankle but he could play on it.

Coach said if you can play on it it's not sprained, sit your butt down.

They played snell, and snell looked good.

Conner seething on the sidelines because he was ready to play.

Right after the game coach says hey we'll leave the light on for him.

He goes to practice and they explain that he isn't going to start anymore if he's going to tap his helmet every time he gets a boo-boo.

He practices fully the rest of the week and is expected to play.

I understand that snell ran well but snell is one dimensioned. That was fine when he was gashing the giants but what Tomlin really wants is a 3 down back who plays tough imo. I think he's going to have a fast trigger finger but I think the ball is in Conner's court right now.

I'm not ready to trust him or snell in leagues where I have good depth, but I'm considering it in a league where I can start 4 backs.

You think a guy that practiced through beating cancer & is playing for a fat contract would do that? Come on
Yes, I specifically think that he said I can play through it and they benched him to send a message. It matches all the body language I saw on the sidelines and all the messages coming out of Pittsburgh this week.  I might be wrong but I'm just sharing my perspective use it however you'd like.

IMHO, more probable: Conner got his ankle re-taped (sideline reporter noted it in the 1st quarter), generating Tomlin's "How is it?" Conner says he can play through it, but Tomlin sees Snell doing well and decides it's better to protect his bell cow from aggravating his injury unnecessarily.

Some serious yarn spinning in here - man. Maybe dude just sprained his ankle & Snell was playing well so they ran with him (pun intended).

I’m not sure it was as dramatic as all this. Not like the Giants were really getting anything done most of the game. They hit/stuffed Barkley behind the line 7x, and were consistently harassing Jones. That game wasn’t ever as close as the final score. And the final score wasn’t that close. The only thing that even kept it that close was Roethlisberger shaking off the cobwebs for the 1st half+ of football.

i dunno....the narratives here are all pretty deep/detailed, and none too flattering of Conner. What I saw was that Conner got badly outplayed long before he got hurt. Snell ran with determination, speed, power and vision. Conner displayed literally none of those attributes

Tomlin has since said he could envision a “1A” scenario developing for Snell (That, after talking up Snell’s improvement all camp). That backfield could be an ugly split for Conner owners all year.

Unless of course Conner snaps out of it and runs like his job depends on it. And even that might not be enough at this point.

Those hoping he was benched for playing soft & it magically lights a fire under his butt may be wishfully thinking.

Personally, I think he got outplayed by Snell then sprained his ankle, and the Steelers ran just fine without him. So why run out a dude on a sprained ankle when the backup is giving you more anyway? that seems like football 101.

Just like we saw on the field during the game.

I think one thing that's missing here is that the Steeler offense looked all kinds of discombobulated early on.

Ben was shaky at best. There were two different screens he threw to Conner that were off. Conner catches both and makes something of it it could have been a whole different story.

Don't think the line blocking was at it's best early either. Conner was basically running into a wall on all his carries.

Once Ben got his feet under him the offense seemed to get in a groove and I think Snell benefited.

All that said, Snell looked damn good.

If I'm Tomlin, I'm giving Conner the benefit of the doubt this weekend, but if he's remotely shaky we are quickly going to see a timeshare @DEN. Big game for Conner this weekend.

I don't have the guts to start him that's for sure.

I see these as different shades of grey to be honest. We can all agree on some things

- conner left the game with an ankle injury after the team complained about his frequent injuries. Not a good look.

- conner looked like he expected to play again and looked pissed on the sidelines when he wasn't getting to

- snell ran better than conner

- Tomlin said they were keeping a light on for conner

- Tomlin said in the preseason that he prefers one bellcow

- Tomlin said in the preseason that conner was that bellcow

- snell had 4 targets last season and caught 3.  Conner and Samuels combined for 95 targets last year

- snell had 108 carries last year.  Conner and Samuels combined for 182.

- the Pittsburgh offense traditionally throws to the running back a lot, and snell got 35 percent of the carries last year, but only 4 percent of the pass targets.  This year he came in as the backup and carried the ball well again but still only got one target and didn't catch it.

- the steelers offense does not look as good when they put in a receiving specialist/third down back

- conner is in danger of losing the bellcow role

- snell is unlikely to become a 3 down back in the near term but could be a strong contributor even with just running, and if he can catch the ball, he's as valuable as conner ever was

- it's a contract year for conner and Samuels has disappointed so the steelers are very likely to either resign conner or bring in another rb next year, which impacts snells keeper/dynasty appeal

Conner allows the steelers offense to do more things, but if snell gives them better rushing numbers and doesn't have the injury risk, they will have to use him more.  Conner needs to put in a good showing if he wants to keep the job, but it will take a really good showing to keep snell from eating into his role.

Based on that, my opinion is that it's an expensive time to try to acquire snell, and a cheap time to go after conner.  I would still put out feelers for snell but I'm not going to pay "possible rb1" prices for him when I can spend a little more and get actual rb1 value, or wait to see if he gets the job before paying up for him on the basis that he might.  It's a tough week to buy. I'd wait until after week 3 if I want him.

I understand Snell had a good second half, but not sure why everyone acts like Conner played so poorly. He had merely 6 carries.  6. At that time, Snell had 2 carries for 9 yds. Yet everyone states Snell looked SO much better before Conner left the game. Seriously? From two carries?? At the end of the game, Snell's stats were good, but I also saw a lot more stretch runs and less up the gut into the heart of a decent run defense. I also saw BB putting it together and the NYG secondary having to respect the pass again leading to bigger runs.

I wasn't happy to see Conner tap himself out, but I don't think he was "outplayed" from Conner's 6 carries to Snell's 2. That's looking at the game too much in a vacuum.

- conner is in danger of losing the bellcow role
biggest takeaway here - I’m in agreement on this 100%, and suspect it’s already the case. Tomlin said, Snell has earned more of a 1a role. That sound like RBBC.

Conner allows the steelers offense to do more things, but if snell gives them better rushing numbers and doesn't have the injury risk, they will have to use him more.  Conner needs to put in a good showing if he wants to keep the job, but it will take a really good showing to keep snell from eating into his role.
he has in the past. Limited sample for sure but he looked like booty in that game before the ankle. And he’s never played a full season, so maybe the Steelers would be smart to reduce Conner’s workload regardless.

Agree, but there’s a distinct possibility that Snell’s value holds if a true time-share develops.

in which case I still wouldn’t want to pay present-value for him. No way he’s worth acquiring for RB1 pricing.

because he did. He looked SO much better on those 2 carries. And Conner looked SO bad on his touches that it made Snell look that much better on those 2 carries. On the in-game topic I said it after 1 carry.

I wasn't happy to see Conner tap himself out, but I don't think he was "outplayed" from Conner's 6 carries to Snell's 2. That's looking at the game too much in a vacuum.
Conner looked bad. Like, had me wondering if he was a benefit of  system/OL when he was successful bad.

I’m sure others will give him benefit of the doubt. I concede he may come out and look better this week. But he did not look like an NFL player on those 2 carries before he got hurt.

I drafted Henry in the first and Kelce in the second. I had no intention of taking a RB in the third but found Conner sitting there at my turn

I kinda regretted taking him before I even made it back to my seat. Took Snell in the last rd and thought I’d be ok

Now I have this #### and it’s only week 2

sigh...

Agree and disagree...overall you are dead-on about the small snapshot...on the flipside while it was small he looked bad (and Snell looked good) and he also got hurt and that was a major concern about him going into the season...if he has a good game this week then those six runs go into the rear-view mirror quickly, if he has another dud and Snell runs as well as he did last week Conner could really see a reduced role...last week's injury gave Snell an opening and after his performance I think he's going to get some more opportunities and that really has a chance to ding Conner's value even if he plays well.

Great post although I do believe if Snell has something like a 100 yard performance or a two TD game this week his value will go thru the roof...he is such a tough guy to put a value on right now and as you point out his receiving role is a huge x-factor both short and long term...this is a monster week for both Conner and Snell...will be real interesting to see what it looks like after their game.

What’s tough about this is they’re vs Denver, who lost Bouye to a dislocated shoulder, and who just did a very good job containing Henry, who needed 31 carries to get 100+ yards. I know the box score looks ok, but in-game eye test, Denver was very tough against the run all game.

Game script would seem to favor a healthy dose of JJSS & Dionte Johnson. So this may not be the best week to evaluate either Connor or Snell.

on the other hand, against a tougher run defense than NYG if one RB has success, maybe it will say a lot about what we’ll see going forward.

One other thing here...Conner is a FA after this year...Snell has two more low-money years after this year...if the Steelers hit on Snell it is a very big plus as far as the salary cap is concerned.

If Connor goes I’d expect them to draft a RB or bring in a FA. I don’t see a scenario where they make Snell a feature back, but stranger things have happened.

I would expect that as well but if Snell is legit and it's something like a 3rd rounder like Moss or a fourth like a Kelley this year you are adding another real low contract.

Most people are pretty aware of the Steelers success at drafting WR's but I think an underrated part of that  success is based on fact they know how to develop them. Their track record of drafting and developing RB's is not as strong but it's not so bad either.

Le'Veon Bell in his rookie season looked like a plodder. Comes back in year  two noticeably leaner and quicker to go along with a lot of advancements as a true three down back.

James Conner in his rookie season looked like a spare. Comes back in year two leaner, noticeably quicker and his game had grown into someone who had developed into a 3 down back.

Benny Snell in his rookie season looked like a replacement level spare, a plodder. Reports all during camp to my own eyes this last Monday was that he was noticeable leaner and quicker. Not sure if he's developed three down skill set yet but it sure seems like I'm sensing a trend here.

To early IMO to make any definitive statement because we got a whole season yet to play but I personally think Snell is on track to take the reigns next season, if not sooner.

Don’t forget about McFarland next year
And then we get to McFarland who of course was not active last week and it would seem they are in the process of developing him. I'm not sure they view him as a feature runner,  I know I recall Tomlin saying stuff after drafting him as having a specific role in mind, but they sure might view him as a nice compliment to Snell but again we got a whole season to play out before making these predictions.

Well, as of now my opponent is still riding with Snell at RB2 & Conner on his bench.

Starting to seriously wonder if he’s gonna stick with that.

For sure not the position I'd take, at worst for Conner it's possible Snell earned more work this week but Snell is not 1A yet and don't think he's yet to even turn this into being 1B. Put another way I believe the feature back role this year is still Conner's for the taking, whether or not he's up to it is the question I got but this week I'd ride with him as my RB2 without hesitation.

Yeah, betting he changes it before tomorrow’s game.

Still not the friendliest of matchups for whoever gets the most Steelers carries.

Snell was a bell cow at Kentucky, so he has been durable and a strong runner.  The big question is whether he can at least be adequate catching the ball.  I have my doubts about that.  As a UK fan I enjoyed watching Snell in college, but he may be a sell high right now.

Fair. But I am not necessarily opposed to seeing a 75/25 split. I don't think Conner's body and running style can handle a 90/10 or even 80/20 split over a whole season. I also remember last year a lot of people were hyped up about Samuel's opportunities when Conner got hurt and he did not look good in a larger sample size.  (I think Snell is a better 2 down back than Samuel, but similar hype)

Conner has his warts especially with the injury concern. Sometimes, I think he mimics Bell a little too much with a tentative (I don't want to say patient) approach to the LOS. I think the O-line was more dominant Conners first year, and he could get away with that. Don't think that's the case anymore. Sometimes you just gotta hit the hole and take what you can get.

Then let’s go with the “something else” premise. Dude is a cancer survivor. Wuss doesn’t belong anywhere near his name,
Agreed.

and let’s be real: any NFL player > 99% of FBG members in terms of toughness.

If someone has made it to the NFL, they are tough as nails whether they get injured or not.

I don’t mind the JAG designation so much, because you’re comparing football players to other football players. But no keyboard warrior should be calling a pro football player a wuss.

Kickers say hi

I sold for probably 70 cents on the dollar. Traded Conner/Jeudy for Jacobs/Metcalf in a keep two league where both players I traded can be kept next year, and neither player I acquired can be kept. Feels great to be rid of the headache.

I would take the Jacobs/Metcalf side of the trade 99 times out of 99. I’m definitely not seeing $.70 on the dollar.

There should be an NFL kicker fighting tournament.....like a round robin MMA type thing....that would be an awesome PPV!......seabass would clean some clocks

Ah, so you also catch yourself making involuntary groaning noises getting in & out of vehicles?
I'm pretty sure I've got to start buying vehicles I've got to step up into, these sedans that are barely off the ground are getting really hard to get out of

For this season sure. But if Jeudy is a top 12 receiver next year, this trade is gonna sting. I’m ok with it though. I’ll worry about next year, next year.
I feel like “if” is doing a lot of heavy lifting in this concern.

Sutton is a stud receiver - he’s going to command a sizable amount of target share.

Jeudy looks good, and has crazy agility/movement after the catch. But he’s gotta catch it for that ti matter.

He also has Lock throwing him the rock, which may or may not turn out to be a good thing. As goes Lock so goes Jeudy. 2021 top 12 receiver sounds very optimistic to me.

Whatever dude. You profited on each piece.
