IMHO, more probable: Conner got his ankle re-taped (sideline reporter noted it in the 1st quarter), generating Tomlin's "How is it?" Conner says he can play through it, but Tomlin sees Snell doing well and decides it's better to protect his bell cow from aggravating his injury unnecessarily.
Some serious yarn spinning in here - man. Maybe dude just sprained his ankle & Snell was playing well so they ran with him (pun intended).
I’m not sure it was as dramatic as all this. Not like the Giants were really getting anything done most of the game. They hit/stuffed Barkley behind the line 7x, and were consistently harassing Jones. That game wasn’t ever as close as the final score. And the final score wasn’t that close. The only thing that even kept it that close was Roethlisberger shaking off the cobwebs for the 1st half+ of football.
i dunno....the narratives here are all pretty deep/detailed, and none too flattering of Conner. What I saw was that Conner got badly outplayed long before he got hurt. Snell ran with determination, speed, power and vision. Conner displayed literally none of those attributes
Tomlin has since said he could envision a “1A” scenario developing for Snell (That, after talking up Snell’s improvement all camp). That backfield could be an ugly split for Conner owners all year.
Unless of course Conner snaps out of it and runs like his job depends on it. And even that might not be enough at this point.
Those hoping he was benched for playing soft & it magically lights a fire under his butt may be wishfully thinking.
Personally, I think he got outplayed by Snell then sprained his ankle, and the Steelers ran just fine without him. So why run out a dude on a sprained ankle when the backup is giving you more anyway? that seems like football 101.
Just like we saw on the field during the game.
I see these as different shades of grey to be honest. We can all agree on some things
- conner left the game with an ankle injury after the team complained about his frequent injuries. Not a good look.
- conner looked like he expected to play again and looked pissed on the sidelines when he wasn't getting to
- snell ran better than conner
- Tomlin said they were keeping a light on for conner
- Tomlin said in the preseason that he prefers one bellcow
- Tomlin said in the preseason that conner was that bellcow
- snell had 4 targets last season and caught 3. Conner and Samuels combined for 95 targets last year
- snell had 108 carries last year. Conner and Samuels combined for 182.
- the Pittsburgh offense traditionally throws to the running back a lot, and snell got 35 percent of the carries last year, but only 4 percent of the pass targets. This year he came in as the backup and carried the ball well again but still only got one target and didn't catch it.
- the steelers offense does not look as good when they put in a receiving specialist/third down back
- conner is in danger of losing the bellcow role
- snell is unlikely to become a 3 down back in the near term but could be a strong contributor even with just running, and if he can catch the ball, he's as valuable as conner ever was
- it's a contract year for conner and Samuels has disappointed so the steelers are very likely to either resign conner or bring in another rb next year, which impacts snells keeper/dynasty appeal
Conner allows the steelers offense to do more things, but if snell gives them better rushing numbers and doesn't have the injury risk, they will have to use him more. Conner needs to put in a good showing if he wants to keep the job, but it will take a really good showing to keep snell from eating into his role.
Based on that, my opinion is that it's an expensive time to try to acquire snell, and a cheap time to go after conner. I would still put out feelers for snell but I'm not going to pay "possible rb1" prices for him when I can spend a little more and get actual rb1 value, or wait to see if he gets the job before paying up for him on the basis that he might. It's a tough week to buy. I'd wait until after week 3 if I want him.
