This show is amazing and that actor who played Ben deserves an Emmy

Seriously some of the best acting I’ve seen in a long long time. He absolutely nailed bipolar, Especially the manic side.

Perhaps all the recognition he’s getting may indeed be cause for the writers to keep Ben alive.

I'm in the camp of thinking that the show certainly left the possibility open for Ben to be alive, but also hoping the showrunners don't indulge themselves by using it.

It's just hard for me to imagine a use of Ben that wouldn't cheapen what was a surprisingly powerful arc.  None of the possible motivations really make a lot of sense.  And I think he's served his purpose narratively.  I don't know how long they plan to go on the show, but it seems to me that they're already at a place where a plausible final season where Charlotte informs on her parents in order to protect Jonah from getting further drawn in to the business would make sense.  And I don't really see much place for Ben in that story, or frankly, a way to keep him alive much longer in any continuing story (and killing him for real would just cheapen what they already did).

Yeah I just can’t imagine the husband letting the wife suffer the pain of her decision like she did if he knows that Ben didn’t die.  And any idea that he would be naïve enough to believe Ben would stay in hiding forever with out reaching back out just would fit.

If Ben comes back I’d never watch again. That’s General Hospital bad, can’t believe anybody would want that.

:goodposting:

The actor nailed the character, the writing and performance were outstanding, and the story arc was perfect - no need to mess it up by somehow making him not dead.

This.

Plus it cheapens Wendy's character arc to end the season.

Watched season 1 when it first came out. Watched the start of season 2 right away but lost interest and didn't go back to until last week. All caught up now (watched pretty much all of the season 3 the last 2 nights)

Its a very entertaining show but the need to suspend disbelief is a bit much. The FBI is literally siting in the casino office and counting every dollar that comes into the place and they seriously can't close the deal? Come on.  I get that maybe they were just holding back trying to see if they could flip Marty, but considering the way the agent acted, it didn't seem like a slow play. It seemed like a "we can't quite figure this out so we'll throw a hail mary to see if Marty bites and bails us out"

Linney really is an incredible actress.  Amazing range. She was the picture of grace and wisdom and kindness in John Adams and then in this, she's just this incredibly arrogant, mean spirited ##### that is SOOOO easy to hate. The way she struts around with her wine and stupid little smirk on her face like she owns the place (even though any one of 3 people could snap their fingers and wipe her out in a second) is incredible.

I dont really buy Bateman just forgiving her at the end of season 3. (or any number of other character motivation items) But whatever....I was entertained.

Just finished S3.  Enjoying it more as it went on, only stuck thru S1 because everyone said how good it was and now glad I did.  Like Ruth, even if she is a little too mouthy.  Feel bad for her as every time something starts to go good for her it ends up bad.  Finds money has to give it back.  Straightens up strip club has to give it over to dorky guy.  Gets to run casino has to deal with Frank Jr.  Gets brother into college has to tell him she killed his dad.  Dad gets out of jail he becomes abusive.  Meets a guy he has to die....

Anyhow - anyone know what the pic was on the phone in school?  Assuming Ben and that girl?

Like mentioned page or so back - Did Jonah shoot at someone (the sister by mistake?) or just the window?

I just assumed it was something that was mean toward the girl and he became angry that they were making fun of her.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. He just snapped at them bullying her.

I can't wait to see why the cartel leader sided with the Byrds.

My guess is Navarro knew lawyer Helen went to the feds, representing Marty, to show he was about to turn ... even though he wasn't.

She wouldn't leave that office until the feds drew up the deal on their letterhead ... for Marty to sign ... and I assume she was going to present it to Navarro as proof Marty was about to turn.

I think Navarro got wind of her scheme somehow.

Can’t believe it took us so long to finish this season (blame a colicky newborn!) but definitely was my favorite so far.

They’ve done such a wonderful job with the malleability of the characters. Episode to episode, scene to scene almost, you have different sympathies even though these are mostly awful people.

And the ending was a jaw dropper. I will miss that character but wow.

Didn’t see that coming.  Season 3 was worth the wait.  Season 4 can’t come soon enough.

I'm usually pretty bad at these things but this is one I called.  Seemed obvious to me that something had to happen and you had to know that Bateman and Linney were not going anywhere.

Totally agree, but on a related note, I said to my wife as we were watching that if Tom Pelphrey (Ben) does not get Emmy consideration as a guest actor, it will be a travesty. He was a sensational character and played the range of emotions superbly.

Agree - lots of great acting performances but this guy was fantastic and honestly I kind of hated his character but still thought he was awesome.

I'm not sure how far ahead they are in writing this show but I think the only reason they didn't show Ben getting killed was to leave it open in case they want to go with him still being alive. It wouldn't be the first time a show used viewer popularity to alter writing plans.

I don't get the hate for her at all.  Okay, the series started off with her shown to be cheating on Marty, but then she gets thrown into a situation no one could have possibly imagined.  I don't find neither her nor Marty to be particularly likable or unlikable.

She's a total ##### and Linney pulls it off with spades.  I loathe her but she's fantastic.  I hope Bateman's character gets to put a bullet in her but only at the very end.

Bateman has been quoted as saying that the show was never thought to be a 10-12 year show. He said the plan and understanding all along was somewhere in the 3-5 year range. Who knows if he is only saying that to get premium pay for future seasons, but he seemed to think they could be setting things up for the end game soon.

When did it become a thing that television shows have to believable?  It's like you people haven't watched TV your entire life.  And LOL at some of the examples of believable shows - BCS had <redacted unbelievable BCS story line to not spoil for others>

TOTALLY BELIEVABLE!!!1!!Juan!!!

That was my first reaction after just now Hippling the thread but IF they show that Marty planned Ben being kidnapped by the cartel who agree to do that and kill Helen then I'm open to it.  That's about the only way it makes sense.

I thought that part was reasonably straight forward.  They offered up a way to potentially win the drug war.

Helen is a great, loyal employee.  But she is ultimately replaceable.  No one else offers up a chance to flip the tides on the war Navarro is handily losing besides the Byrdes.

It's like rolling the dice on AJ Brown being the next big thing in your dynasty draft instead of settling for steady Jarvis Landry.  Landry has been putting up nice consistent numbers for years, but he's not going to win the league for you like Brown has the upside to do.

There is a gray area between totally believable and totally contrived.  Ozark occasionally straddles the contrived line, but the rest is so good, and the acting is so stellar, that I can overlook those brief moments.

Huh. That’s actually pretty compelling, and would explain why Marty didn’t try to wiggle of the flight when he learned Helen set them up. Makes sense if he knew something. Might also make sense that he needed Ruth to think Ben was dead so she wouldn’t go after him. But overall, Ben was a huge liability and don’t know Marty would have taken the risk. Was clear by Ben buying the phone, calling Helen, and telling some rando at box store that he was being chased by the mob that Ben was a time bomb no matter where he ended up.

I was just running with the hypothetical- I don’t think it will happen and wish he were dead but I wouldn’t call it General Hospital bad if that’s how it plays out.  Marty is a smart guy - he knew there was no way Helen would let Ben live.

Therapist showing up in car that looked like Bubble Bee was hysterical. On the edge of credulity, even in that universe, but for me it worked, maybe helped by the excellent acting of that woman who somehow pulled off this eccentric, murky character who is willing to exploit every situation, but is still committed to dispensing therapeutic advice. Loved her.

As therapist told Marty that she wanted a #### load of money to "stay quiet" ... I was thinking to myself, be careful lady, there is a $ amount that will make more sense to off you than pay you.

They took it to the next level with the car ... but the greedy old hag had it comin'.

I liked her season 1-2... not so much season 3.  They humanized her too much... I liked it better when she was just a scary ##### carrying out "her client's" wishes.

The therapy scenes were some of my favorite, particularly the big blow up.
