Ozark on Netflix (1 Viewer)

Done. Not terrible but a bit of a slog and big comedown from S1. Don't think i'll be watching S3
Well that's one way to go...

Just finished S2 last night, enjoyed it. Delivered pretty much what I was hoping it would. Didn't really have an OH ####! moment like the finale from S1 but enjoyed it and will watch S3.

Still think the best part of S1 is when they throw the wife's lover out of his building and he smacks on the ground in front of Marty, who just nonchalantly gets back into his car.

As i said earlier in the thread, they just totally lost control of the flow chart and let it become a ruinous torrent of corruption with no one stemming  the tide. Flabby writing reduced it to something i only half-watched the last 7 eps to satisfy my curiosity and which i'm thankful resolved itself in such a way that will make me happy not to return for future seasons.

Just finished S2.  The show is still good but not GREAT.  See below...

1.  I didn't notice the thing about the symbols either.  I'll have to go back and take a look.

2.  I agree with guru_007....both Darlene and Jacob (and the driver) should have been killed in the attack on their car.  What a really dumb scene.  No way they make it out of there alive.

3.  The Langmore's annoy me...all of them. Ruth is cute...but all of their voices....horrible.

4.  They didn't give too much detail on the businesses getting shut down and then reopening.  I know it was the FBI shutting them down but they didn't really get into when they reopened or how they reopened.

5.  Is Buddy the dip, duck, dodge...Patches Cullihan (sp) from Dodgeball?

6.  Russ had a decent voice when he was singing the Nirvana song with Wyatt.  He did a good job there.

7. Can you really make cyanide from cherry pits?

8. Are they really putting a casino on that old ### boat?  Seriously?  You're spending millions of dollars on getting this casino going and you buy an old rickety boat?  Dumb.
Buddy is the DEA agent from Scarface.

1. Neither did I :bag:

2. Agreed.  At the very least grievously wounded

3. Not a native of the area, but would expect some sort of accent.  Seem consistent at least

4. Wasn't needed and if they had provided a lot of detail it would have been boring.

5. No that was Rip Torn.  But he was Orson Snyder on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

6. OK sure :lmao:

7. Yes, but unless we missed him drinking a lot more than we saw, seems like a stretch

8. They had a need for speed.  It was available so it was preferable to building a palace.

Another really good season, but I thought it climaxed in the middle and then peetered out a bit at the end.  I am bummed to see Petty go. I thought he and the feds getting heavily involved made it a lot more interesting.  His death was kind of absurd, too, as I can't see a federal agent spitting out that much verbal diarrhea at a felon on parole in the middle of nowhere without having his guard up.

It's clear that Season 3 will see Frank and the KC mob get way more involved as the Mexican cartel pulls back a bit.

Seeing the younger photo of Buddy instantly made me realize he was the same actor who played the corrupt cop in Scarface.

Still plugging through season 2. I like it. Where the plot goes a little wonky they make up for it with great acting scenes. For example e7, when Wendy is captive in the priests basement the hit him in the head with the fire extinguisher was kind of silly. But her manipulating him with his religion using her own experiences (supposedly) was superb.

Decent finale.  The dynamic between Wendy and Marty is good.  Gripe - the size of that boat, how many people are you going to fit on there, 50 max?  If you're going to call it a casino you got to get a boat to that holds ten times that.  I'm guessing next season when we see the casino it's a different boat/set.

It was somewhere in the middle of the season.  She was in her office (on the phone, I think?) and they showed him standing in the office and she just kind of gave him a look.  certainly possible that he is above her, also far from clear.
completely agree about the ambiguity.

i've come to like the idea expressed earlier in the thread that the lawyer is also the client. it does ameliorate the dramatic problem of why the cartel was so patient with the Byrdes S2 shenanigans. a lawyer is much more likely to be patient with a long con (and i know, from all those FBI laundering inservices when i was casino suit, that a gambling hall is the Fata Morgana for money scrubbers) than a crime boss. i can't see a long-distance head of a cartel not wanting to swat the bug at some point.

some general thoughts- we wrapped it up last week.

- while I love buddy's character and portrayal, they used him too often as a deus ex machina

- daughter emancipating... seems to me the kind of thing the cartel wouldn't like. ie.. random teenager who knows #### now on her own? figure they'd put a literal end to that pdq. which is what I'd have explained to the girl I was in that situation- you leave, and you're probably dead. and you've probably killed the rest of us. but yeah... gah-head and emancipate. also have to figure the info she divulged to wylie is going to come back and screw the byrds.

- I kind of like the hillbillies, even if the wife's crazy act was a bit much both large and small. the trading of the baby couldn't have been more telegraphed.

- the hit on the hillbillies.  so dumb. an army of trained killers stand back 50 yards and just hope the people are dead?

- ruth's dad... frustrating as the opposite plot device to buddy, but somehow works. he's a two-bit, ex-con punk who acts like it.

- ruth and wife... they decided in their last conversation when ruth explains the situation- through subtext- that he needed to go, right? if not, ruth is in for a really rough S3- byrds had dad killed and aren't ceding control of anything to her, and wylie hates her.

- petty being dead- should only bring a ton of FBI presence into the situation. along with the mob exploding marty's office.

- really enjoyed the son's character arc this season.

felt like it ramped up a bit this season. not tip-top stuff, still some implausible eyerolly stuff, which is kind of to be expected given the story line... but overall solid- especially the acting.

Mrs. SF decided to give this a shot, so we watched S1 over the last week.

I have a question about the finale - FBI is ready to bust Del on the parking ticket charge, they barricade the entrance to the Snell's place, and then Marty gets out of the SUV - How does Marty get away with not answering questions about how he came into possession of the SUV?  Presumably its leased - and its not Marty's name on the lease...

Ruth will probably get a bigger role in the operation - even though Byrdes are staying.  She may be the last person standing when the show ends.

I assume Wyatt will be off to Mizzou

FBI will tie Cade to Petty's death - I assume his fingerprints are literally all over the car.  But, I wonder if anyone will put Wendy and Cade together in the diner before Cade is gunned down - that would put pressure on Wendy - separate from Marty.

My guess is that Marty eventually (secretly) gives the FBI evidence of the KC Mob - which keeps the FBI occupied, and Marty and his family out of the FBI cross-hairs

So you watched S2 too?

So you watched S2 too?
Yes - I have seen both - wife wanted to watch, so I just got done re-watching S1

ETA - so, yes, I know there are several plot holes that you just have to accept - but that one stood out (not following up on who owns the SUV

"he" being ruth's dad.

anybody else pick up on that from their conversation? there was a lot of unspoken subtext and fantastic acting in that scene.. but I really thought the look they gave eachother was a tacit "go ahead and kill him, we have no choice". my wife didn't see it that way.

I figured he was on one of two paths early on - back to jail, or dead.

The preview blurb says: "Ruth realizes Cade must be stopped".  So, I think there probably was a tacit understanding - though this was a call Wendy made on her own - going to the Lawyer to arrange the hit.  So, I can see how there might be some ramifications to deal with next season - vis-a-vis Ruth and the Byrdes.

But, we already had Ruth try to kill Marty, and Ruth killing Russ and Boyd.  So, if anyone should understand the game, its Ruth.

Yeah... The scene I'm talking about, I took it that the conversation and look Ruth gave her was the approval for Wendy to call the lawyer and get it arranged...not that Wendy did it on her own. That's what made the scene so compelling imo

That's way down on the list for me.  I enjoy the show but in contains more plot holes than a sieve.

I thought the same thing. But it was done just right so that you can't be 100% sure. Well done scene, IMO.

I went back to watch and its hard to tell.

Wendy definitely made the call herself - though its possible that she and Ruth had an implicit understanding of what had to happen.  When Wendy visited the lawyer to set up the hit - the lawyer mentioned how Wendy had no idea what she was saying/asking - and that it "changes" you - "how it feels when your husband touches you..."

Fast-forward to the ceremony, right after Wendy gets confirmation of the hit, Marty walks up, and grabs her arm - and the camera pans to see the look in Wendy's face.  i.e. things have changed for Wendy now.

Even Marty is now worried about what his wife has done/become - this was a new twist from Wendy that Marty had not anticipated - added to the fact that she wants to stay and fight.

The more I think about it, I can see this becoming a wedge at some point - between Wendy and Marty, and also between Ruth and the Byrdes.  I can see Ruth not getting as much respect as she thinks she has earned, and looking around and thinking the Byrdes have effectively destroyed her little family, and she has no real allies in her corner.

:blackdot:

Binge watched this show over the last few weeks.  Laura Linney is fantastic.  I get the Ruthie love, but IMO Linney is the real star, and giving her a Michael Corleone moment at the casino opening was great. I don't get why Jason Bateman got an Emmy nomination, however. He's fine, but it's not exactly a taxing role.

I agree about Linney.

But Bateman has been fantastic too- a ton of great work in less obviuos ways... especially how he uses his eyes, tone of voice and set of the jaw, considering his character is so flat and isn't a big-emotion guy.

thought buddy, rusty, the son and wylie were all pretty great too.

There is a river boat casino in St Joe, Mo that is that size or smaller and it’s always packed. Probably holds a max of 200 people

Haven't read the thread to avoid spoilers but having a tough time getting through season 2. Loved the 1st season but this one is a slog so far. Finished the episode where the Feds raided the house at the end. Tell me it gets better from here.

End of season one is just maddening.

Bad guys in the house on top of the hill, maybe at most a 1/4 mile off the road.

Feds and locals, 4-5 cars worth, sitting at the end of the driveway waiting for bad guys to come out

Shotgun blast and hand-cannon fire all fall upon deaf ears?!?!!? :

7 is a yes, u can also use apple, apricot, and a couple others.  I take about 8-12 apricot seeds every day.  You have to build up to that though.

del Pino: No, not really. The only thing we did was that we shot everything at 4,400 Kelvin temperature, interiors and exteriors, day and night likewise. And because we tried different color temperatures when we were doing tests, we saw that using that setup would give us the most ability to keep that consistent cooler grayish/blueish palette. But no filtration.

This tells me they are using LED's vs. standard HMI/Tungsten lighting. LED's allow for Kelvin adjustment. Standard lighting does not unless you apply gels to warm or cool them. Since there are no camera filters and no gels, it's LED's. As a Set Lighting Technician and Gaffer in Hollywood, I myself can't stand LED lighting. I'm old school. The units are too soft and don't allow for cutting and shaping. Nevertheless, it's my favorite show right now. I binge watched the entire season ... I think I finally went to sleep around 6am last Saturday.
I just wanted to say I think you have a cool job.  ?

I just don't get why their house is so dark all the time.
My biggest criticism of the show.  Not just the house either, but nearly every scene. Really frustrating, and I notice it more and more with a lot of programs and movies.

Somebody needs to start paying the power bill.
