2018 Mid-Year Song Draft - Round 9 this AM, Round 10/all owed picks this afternoon. (1 Viewer)

This McCafferty song pretty cool. I hated the opening but it really opens up around the 1:00 mark. Blink 182 is all over this.

I will pull a NV move and pimp a band that the wife and I saw.  Honestly, they weren't on my radar before, but after listening to the album on the way to the show, seeing them live, and her talking about the music and lyrics and how much she likes this song and I am hooked now.

Round 13:

Cold War Kids - Part of the Night

LINK

We are a part of the night
Part of the night
You see me through my darkest times
We are a part of the night
Part of the night
I feel you when I close my eyes

They only had about 5 albums this year, I suppose we could get one song on the playlist.

Round 14:

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Sleep Drifter

LINK

Drifting in and out of sleep

Is my favourite state to be

:blackdot: Had to skip this one, but def gonna be checking out the playlist.
you still have time to submit 15 picks real quick!

That was one of my favorites from them this year as well.  If I was in a different mood, I was going to pick Rattlesnake today and include a blurb about how the lyrics really make the song.

:lmao:  I'll take a look once I'm done with today's work. Two of my favorites from the first few rounds were "Ran" and "Whiteout Conditions".

I've been really bad about keeping up with new music recently. Caught up a bit thanks to some "best of" Spotify playlists, but little in the way of actual full albums.

I had several songs in contention today for my final pick, but this morning sucked and I felt like rocking the ##### out, so there you go.

Round 15 - Direct Hit! - Blood on Your Tongue

Hey look at me - I followed the rules today!  Happy new year everyone.

Others in contention for my final pick in case anyone is curious:

  • Jameel's Space Ride - Thundercat
  • Lights Out - Royal Blood
  • The Way You Used To Do - Queens of the Stone Age (this must have been picked though, right?)
  • Bored Teenagers - Beach Slang
  • My Best Friend is a Nihilist - Iron Chic
  • Gold Moon - together PANGEA
And a few from albums already picked that I considered as well

  • Without Your Love - Harley Poe
  • Ordinary Day - The Districts
  • Not Coping - Clowns

Final picks and anything owing can be made today. I'm less busy finally and should be able to catch up anything missing from spreadsheet/spotify as well.

Damn, it is going to be very difficult to narrow it down to 2 more.  Great year for songs, and thanks to all the participants for directing me to some I (or Spotify's Discover Weekly) missed.

El Floppo said:
ok... struggling to narrow it down to three here. we're stopping at 15- or keep going?

either way, I'm getting another one from my AOTY in here before it's all done.

13... 1049 gotho- IDLES
This is the IDLES song I've had in my playlist for most of the year.

Round thirteen

Long Time - Blondie

This collaboration between Debbie Harry and Dev Hynes stays pretty close to Heart of Glass but I assume that was done intentionally.   I'm glad they're still alive and kicking.
The Debbie Harry song ("Shadows") is the best song on the new Future Islands album as well, IMO.

Someone made a joke that seemed hopeful
About things that go bump in the night
At first it kind of picked up the party
And then it kind of ruins your life

What happens when you snuff out the candle?
It’s mostly just an absence of light
Death is a complete loss of power
There was a snake in the shower last night

Round 13 - The Hold Steady - A Snake in the Shower

...this pick was probably inevitable

You're used to winning, how did it feel?
Could you hear the screaming? It was unreal
What did they pay you, what did it cost?
How long did it take you to know that you lost?

Round 14 - The Killers - Tyson v. Douglas

THS released something this year??? I thought I was following them on Spotify.  The hell?

this is for jvdesigner and his ####ty song choices.

14... call the police... lcd soundsystem

album full of anthems... I've been cycling between this, tonite and american dream for the pick.
New Order! ;)

Considered this for my last pick. The top of my list has a few songs that have already had a couple picked from those artists right now, so not sure if I want to triple down on those artists or go another way. There's also the song that shows up at the very top of my 2017 Spotify wrapped playlist but it might be too embarassing/fantastic to put on this playlist.

dammit... I was always taking a twin peaks tune last- it was the first song in my 2017 playlist and I dug it all year. just realized it was from 2016

15.... better find out- together PANGEA

plus... Others I liked

after party- active bird community

sore throat- the bronx

salome- chilly gonzalez, jarvis cocker

Perhaps you list songs 16 on after the draft???
I spoilered them, per your request.

I just thought that at this point, and knowing the other drafters, my listing songs wasn't going to affect anybody else's decisions. and if there was a song they had forgotten about and jostled the brain that they liked it- don't see the harm. but not a big deal so again- I spoilered them.

I really liked that album too!

Super-quick make-up playlist. Reasonably sure I got no repeats. Would've taken several of the ones already picked. Guy I know said that 2017 was the year Portugal, The Man and Grizzly Bear stopped being brutally boring, and I agree to some extent. :lmao:  "Mourning Sound" and "Feel It Still" are both fantastic.

Still pretty happy with these leftovers. Several had to grow on me, but then got stuck in my head all day long.

1. Imaginary Tricks, Bird
2. Jens Lekman, Evening Prayer
3. The Shins, Mildenhall
4. LAKE, Work With What You Got
5. Tennis, My Emotions Are Blinding
6. Day Wave, Untitled
7. Richard Edwards, Rollin' Rollin' Rollin'
8. Simian Ghost, Stop Moving
9. Real Estate, Darling
10. American Lips, Definition
(couldn't find it on YouTube)
11. Nilüfer Yanya, Sliding Doors
12. Parcels, Overnight
13. Bad Fit, Worry Doll
14. Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dressner, Nico Muhly & James McAlister, Mercury
15. Dent May, Picture on a Screen

Well, Abrantes wins the Most Obscure Award with Bad Fit’s “Worry Doll,” which has less than 1,000 listens on Spotify six months after its release.

Was really hoping somebody would take something off this. My first listen, it just didn't turn my crank, but it's really grown on me.
Yeah, I kind of felt the same.  Felt like something deserved to be taken from the album.  Some of the songs are a little too slow for my tastes, but they jam out on “Fear Is Like a Forest.”

:pickle:    I WIN!

I'm sure I account for a good chunk of those listens. Like I said before, most of my picks came from playlists others put together, and I have no idea how they dug these songs up, but while some of those picks were growers, "Worry Doll" had me immediately.

I’ve been debating between a bunch of different songs for my last pick, but I’m going to go back to my Album of the Year because it’s been the soundtrack to my 2017 with its very pertinent themes of resisting fascism, racism, police brutality, and class warfare.  Not to mention that the video is pretty dope too.

Round 15:  Run the Jewels - Don’t Get Captured

[El-P (from the perspective of a corrupt police officer):]

Good day from the house of the haunted
Get a job, get a house, get a coffin
Don't stray from the path, remain where you at
That maximizes our profit
Is that blunt? Oh well, hell, so's this boot
We live to hear you say "please don't shoot"
A pure delight, c'mon, make my night
When I file reports what's right's what I write

11+ hour playlist.    I better start in on this thing.

I was going to take a song from this album for the dreampop section of our GP2 draft, so I might as well throw in into this this mix.

Round 15

Japanese Breakfast - Machinist

LINK

I don't know how it happened
Was it always this way, and I just couldn't see it?
Heart burning hot enough for the both of us
I never realized how much you were holding back
