USA Shootings (3 Viewers)

During a meeting last week with local pastors, Republican Rep. Diane Black raised the issue of gun violence in schools and why it keeps happening.

LOL When is the last time anybody saw dirty mags at the grocery store?  Is that still a thing anywhere in the US?

And I guess that's why they don't have shootings in places like the UK...they don't have porn.

Because other groups will take their place.  Money matters more to these politicians, just like guns matter more to some than dead kids.

End this archaic block to reasonable gun reform (2nd Amendment)
???

This is ridiculous. If the only reason we don't have gun regulation is because the politicians are taking money from the NRA, then the why can't the anti-NRA pay the politicians more?

Everyone keeps saying that a large portion of the population wants to change gun laws. Wouldn't those people be willing to donate a few dollars to an anti-NRA group?

If it's not about money, then it's as simple as voting for the right lawmakers.

After that, it's just #####ing about an Amendment for the sake of #####ing.

No.

Its the difference between cultish and non-cultish.
Oh, I thought it was about lobbyists?

You guys can't even get on the same page. How do you expect to effect change?

First it's the NRA. Then it's the politicians. Now it's the cult of gun owners. If the polls are correct, and the majority of the population wants change, then none of these will have enough power to hold the status quo.

“And by grocery store, I mean the liquor store where I spend the bulk of my salary.  Anyone want a drink?”

Even as such, the non-cult member will never put forth the resources of the cult members will. Let alone the lobbyist addition.
Based on polls, it's not a one to one ratio. NRA states they have 5 million members. That leaves 245 million people in the U.S. over the age of 18. (each one could give $1 and it would be $45 million more than the NRA receives in membership fees)

Sounds to me like you want to blame the minority for a problem the majority could easily fix. Both financially and politically.

It sounds like you are completely, and I mean completely, out of touch with reality. Its like you have zero understanding on how politics in America works.

If it worked like you said, there would be no/little need for lobbyist.

It sounds like you are completely clueless. The same things that give the NRA power, is the same things that an anti-NRA group can do. They have more numbers and therefor more money. Which equals power.

You are ignoring the CULT part.

Understandably.

I really wish Foxnews and anyone other outlets wilould stop putting that terrorist monsters face all over tv and the internet.

No, they probably wouldn't. It's unlikely because they don't suffer from the same motivations.

Gun owners own guns because they suffer from fear. And the ones that suffer from fear the most join the NRA for the same reason... they're afraid. Just like the gun in their hand is a power that pacifies their fear, the collective of the NRA is also a power that pacifies their fear. A lot of them also go to church because god and Jesus are a power that pacifies their fear.

The rest of the population doesn't suffer from fear. Most of them (if not all of them) suffer from other things, but none of those things compels them to join an organization that would combat the NRA. That's not to say it couldn't happen. But any organization that grows to a size that could combat the NRA would do so for reasons far from the reasons that the NRA grew to what it is today, and those reasons are not as easy to tap into as the NRA taps into fear.

Are you saying the fear of being shot in a school, movie theater, or mall is not a motivation?

How many people on this board would donate money to an anti-NRA if it meant counter lobbyists to the NRA? Would you?

I would donate, but not out of fear. I'm not afraid of being shot in a school, movie theater or mall. I'm far more likely to be killed in a car accident, given the odds based on historical data. It's not fear that motivates me to solve the issue. It's being sick of seeing these incidents happen at the frequency that they happen here in the US, when the rest of the world doesn't have near the same frequency of them.

Sen. Bill Nelson and Seb. Leahy introduced the crime gun tracing modernization act in the senate last week. This will make it much easier for law enforcement to trace guns found at crime scenes back to their owners. It’s time the primitive records kept in boxes are digitized.

How very human of you, Spock.

I am put in mind of a proposal some years back that each gun manufactured and sold must have a ballistics record.  The lands an grooves on a bullet and the tool markings on the casings would be placed into a data base along with the sale information.  This was intended to aid law enforcement.  One of the manufacturers, Glock maybe, came out with some support for this and were excoriated.  the idea receded quickly.

well that clearly infringes on a person's right to kill someone and get away with it.

This is way too logical and helpful to ever get passed.

These four kids would have graduated today

A larger than normal crowd is expected for the ceremony — but not all the parents of the four students killed will be attending. Andrew Pollack, father of Meadow, said he won’t be attending the graduation because it’s too tough for him to bear. He had attended the senior prom in May in honor of his 18-year-old daughter.

“I did enough with the prom. It almost killed me,” he told the Sun Sentinel.
Good thing our elected leaders are working day and night to stop these tragedies.

So you report an active shooter and link to a SD news anchor's twitter. Turns out the shooter never fired a weapon (airsoft gun) and the police officer shot himself in the foot.

Neither the news anchor or the people on this board are so quick to report the facts once they become available.

Shouldn't the SD shooting have been posted in the "police shoot an unarmed citizen thread".

(I was told facts matter.)

I extremely dislike like how the people who love guns more than kids will say anything to deflect from the topic.  They don't give a flying fig the kids are dying, just so long as they get their little toys.

*** On 3/20, 2+ months, and 84 pages after the original post, the mods decided to change the name of the thread. IIRC, the name was something like “Yay school shootings! USA, USA!”  I can’t imagine why they changed it, particularly since their new chosen title ignores the fact that the whole thread is about school shootings. But apparently some members or mods can’t face the reality that school shootings are endemic to our American culture, and would prefer to ignore it.
Change it back to include the word "school," just leave out the "yay!" I know it was a tongue-in-cheek way of reminding folks that none of these incidents are acceptable but that was likely the offending word.

I believe he read your post just fine.
Ah yes. But didn't you try to tell me that intent is a very important part of people being killed by drunk drivers? He had no intention of firing his weapon and he never pointed it at anyone in particular? Was this an accident?

Should we use this as an example when calling for tougher gun regulation or tougher alcohol regulation?
