USA Shootings (9 Viewers)

So why would I walk around armed all the time (presenting an increased risk to myself and those around me) when 1) the odds of me getting carjacked or robbed are extraordinarily low and 2) on the rare chance it happens, it is far more dangerous FOR ME to pull out a gun to fight for my property than simply giving up the property.

Again, thieves don't actually want to hurt you.  They just want the stuff.
there are crime stats for murder, rape, assaults etc

and I will not be a victim and let criminals have their way with society - sorry, just not who I am, how I was raised or a part of my core belief.

This is a very flawed way to think about things.  I really hope you don't get in a situation that you feel requires you to shoot another and you end up killing an innocent person.  But, hey, it was the criminal's fault in the first place, right?  You were just defending yourself.

Do you have extreme road rage?  I can see you not allowing someone to cut you off since you won't allow yourself to be a victim.
I have had some training, I'm very capable with my guns, why would I endanger an innocent? And no, I cannot have any road rage or anger at all - I carry a gun.

A weapon is last resort.

I don't think ya'll know much about weapons at all.

I had one situation where I thought I might need my weapon. But then I carry, so I have to watch at all times situations. Like road rage, walking home through a dark alley after a concert, being the provoker in any situation etc etc. These are things law abiding citizens do, every day, all around the public and ya'll never know.

I feel much safer in a restaurant with people I know have guns in their pockets. If every there was a Luby's situation, I'd much rather fight back and die than sit back and do nothing.

So, if you are walking in a city through a very busy area and a person comes up behind you and tells you to give him your wallet you would turn around and shoot him?  I'm assuming you would tell him no and that you're armed but what if he still insists you give it to him?  Are you going to shoot him in a crowded area?

good gawd why would I shoot myself or someone else without just cause ! hell I could back over someone with my car's too
You do know you are statistically more likely to kill yourself or a family member than an intruder, right?

I know enough about guns and have plenty myself.  I choose not to carry.  I also know that no matter how trained a person is there can still be accidents.  I'd rather turn over my wallet than prove that I won't be a victim.  To each their own I guess.  I hope you never make a decision you regret.

I find it interesting just how much gun ownership is related to fear, and the different ways people handle fear.

My wife has a friend that recently married an Army Ranger. As you may have guessed, he owns a few firearms. My wife's friend had never had guns around before she was married. But now that she is used to living with guns, she recently told my wife she was uneasy because they were going to be staying at a hotel for a few nights but that they wouldn't have their gun so she doesn't feel safe.

Now, before she ever lived with guns was she worried every time she stayed at a hotel? Nope.

Perception is reality.

at least you're honest

things SHOULD be done

  1. arm schools
  2. super hard punishments
  3. carry permits nationwide (and those can be registered, I'm ok with that)
  4. way better system for background checking
Good luck with that.  You'd be more productive organizing your sock drawer.

I honestly can't imagine thinking I needed a gun to feel safe.  that is bananas.

I am reasonably confident that America is the only western liberal democracy in the world where more than a nominal percentage of people would say they need a gun to feel safe.

I can imagine a few scenarios where I feel I need a gun to feel safe but they are logical scenarios.

I'm only discussing bank robberies, but most modern bank robberies are completely unarmed, with just a note.  Sometimes the note will say "Give me the money or someone will get shot" but mostly they say things like "this is a robbery.  All 10's and 20s.  No dye packs" or "Give me $$ or else."  Usually they feature terrible spelling.

At least this is how it is in the Northeast, where most bank robberies are committed by opiate addicts.  It may be different in other parts of the country where I'd assume the robberies are fueled more by meth.  I will also acknowlege that bank robberies committed by non-drug addicts are more likely to involve weapons.  Weapon bank robberies also seem to get more money.  Note robberies is usually only in the $500-$2000 range.

@Zow can you confirm?
I can't confirm for two reasons (which I'll discuss shortly) but I don't disagree with anything you've said.  Especially regarding the idea that it's mainly addicts doing the robbing and that they usually don't get away with a whole lot.  Put differently, it's a pretty "stupid" crime to commit when you consider the reward (maybe a couple thousand) against the risk (decade plus in jail pending enhancements).

1.  I probably don't have a large enough sample size from my own experience to confirm and I'm not aware of any certain statistics on the issue.

2.  I practice in Arizona.  You know, where you pretty much are handed a gun at birth. So guns are likely far more prevalent here than the northeast. Funny thing is that this includes the tellers/clerks*.  I've had more robberies where the defendant was shot than vice versa.

*I'm not specifically limiting this statement to banks.  Generally the tellers doing the shooting are your gas station attendants, pawn shop owners, etc. I don't recall an actual bank teller opening fire.

I'm with you, but I'm surrounded by people who feel the opposite.  It's just engrained in them.  To them, it seems, it's akin to having a lock on your front door.

The people I know that carry are the type that invite those types of altercations.  They want a reason to show someone they are carrying because they feel it's tough and they don't take #### from others.  This does not speak for more gun carriers though, just a few I know.

I know a lot of people who have taken the classes and have their permits but they do not carry.  They got them so they can drive around with their shotguns out of the case when they're hunting.  It's much easier for them not having to worry about it when they are driving from farm to farm.  Without the permit a gun must be in it's case and closed up.

We are safer than we've ever been but we live on a steady diet of fear. This is the natural consequence.

Guns seem to remarkably effective for killing wives and girlfiends also. But the real point is that no reasonable individuals want to take people's shotguns and handguns for personal protection. The ones you can kill 500 people with from a hotel highrise absolutely. They pose far more of a public safety hazzard than any possible protection they offer.

"Bump Stocks" and similar things have only one purpose - to make a semiautomatic fire like an automatic.  They greatly increase the rate of fire, but also greatly reduce accuracy, so they are useless for target shooting or hunting.  And they are useless for self-defense, unless you are involved in trench warfare or are being attacked by hordes of vikings.  They basically can't be used for anything other than mass murder.

USA!  USA!

everything factors in .... gangs, inner cities, population, drug use, capital punishment, etc etc

no they wouldn't , they'd find another way
no.  other countries have gangs, inner cities, drug use, etc.  yet they do not have thousands of  gun related deaths a year and the murder rates are much lower as a result.  again, only the good old US of A has off the chart murder rate in western democratic society.

walk the bad streets of a major inner city at 3 am and tell me that
is that what you do?

and, i doubt having a gun would help me much in that scenario.  I might be able to injure or kill someone else, but i doubt having the gun would make me feel very safe at all.

they passed their classes and training and learned nothing and they are looking at prison for anything they do illegally with their concealed weapons and rightly so

I hope you never make a decision you regret.
I do too - let me tell you my story (from a post I made somewhere else) . To some people this might not sound like anything. Unless you're there its easy to dismiss. Looking back I'm almost certain she had been raped with information I gathered later. Had I needed to, I'd have been ready to save her life and mine or given it a good try. I don't regret having my gun that day at all, in fact I've never thought wow ... sure wish I didn't have this 9mm.

Rural country road has an old roadside park that I'v often thought about going to. Out of the way and today was cold, windy (temps got down to 35 last night or colder) .... but I decided since I was in that part of Arkansas to go to it. Its got several rock shelter things built, fire pit, etc.

Was there 3 minutes and I dug one pop cap and looked up and this woman was walking towards me. I figured someone to run me off, because next to it was a car dump/garage run down place and I figured she lived there. Anyway, she says something and I can't hear because I'm 1/2 deaf and its windy .... and then again, can I help her, and when she looked up I see her face covered in dried blood.

That changed everything fast. I asked her if anyone was after her right then and trying to hurt her - because I have a CC weapon permit and carry, and I need to know right then if this was a situation that could escalate with an attacker fast. She said no, then maybe. I said ok, I'll absolutely help you and if you'll feel safe, get in my car and lets get you help.

She nodded yes - and we got in and I drove us out of there as fast as I could get going. I had no desire to stay with her in that park, not knowing what was what. No cell phone coverage either.

Looking back, she never asked me any questions, like who I was, where was I from, what was I doing, nothing. I didn't touch her even though I really wanted to look at her face/head closer. She showed me her hands when I asked - they were not bloodied. I talked to her non-stop, asking her things and telling her things about me .... she told me her first name, she said the town she lived in, she wanted to go "home". I got from her a story that sometime in the night, two men in a truck beat her and threw her out and threatened to take her baby. This was noon time so she'd been sleeping in leaves for what - 12 hours or more? That's all she'd tell me really. She told me her ribs hurt badly, she was very very cold. I'm a talker, and talked all the way and she never said much at all. About 15 miles away was a small station, I got her a water very quickly and she didn't open it or try to drink.

I called 911 as soon as I could get service and an officer and Game Warden met me at a crossroad another 10 miles. So I was with her ... maybe 30 minutes total.

The officer I think was a bit shocked at how she looked even though I told the 911 operator what was about. He helped her to his vehicle - and she was still shaking badly and moving much slower. He quickly took my information, and left. First thing he told me when he saw her was " she needs medical attention now" .... yes I knew that.

If I had to guess .... she got into a truck somehow with the two guys, they took her to that remote park and raped/beat her and left her. I'd guess the blood on her face was from a blow to the head, maybe a concussion and she'd not been awake long or she'd have flagged someone else on the road? Her jacket had leaves and grass and dirt - I don't doubt her story.

First few minutes was a bit intense - I have no reason to believe I was at the park at the right time to help her and for no other reason but that. God can work me like that anytime he wants to. I'll likely never know how she is, what happened etc .... I doubt I'll ever have a day metal detecting like that again.

is that what you do?

Or he could like, exercise a little discression and good judgement. That mushmellon in your skull is the ultimate personal safety device.

every situation is different - you would learn this through handling guns, training, class etc

does the person have a knife? a gun? two people attacking? 10' ? 20'? Do they seem exceptionally intent on harm or just needed cash for drugs?

the bottom line always is - is it your life or theirs? If you feel imminent threat to your life, draw your weapon and be ready to use it. Drawing the weapon might be all it take for the situation to end. It might escalate even though you did draw.

of all the murders, violent crimes and rape in the US every year, I wonder how many end up differently if the person assaulted has a weapon to fight back? I have to believe a lot - criminals do not want strong victims, they want weak ones

she understands that she doesn't want to be helpless and a victim in the world anymore - she wants to feel safe, secure and that nobody can harm here.

good for her !

The boy was rushed to the hospital and his mother was arrested. As a veteran, Mason said this accident reinforces something she practices in her own home. “I was in the Army so gun safety and all of that is very important to me.” As a mother of two children, she’s heartbroken for all who were involved. “I can’t imagine what the mom is going through, the family or anything and just prayers that he makes it through,” said Mason. Jason Newman said the accidental shooting happened while the man was holstering a handgun during civilian training. Initial reports were the victim is 59 years old, but Newman was unable to confirm the age. The injured man was transported to Portsmouth Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Fire Chief Don DeAngelis said Sig Sauer has its own paramedics on hand to assist with such incidents, so the victim received immediate care. “They do such a great job treating and packaging so they’re ready to go when we get there. Sig Sauer is very responsive with their EMS,” DeAngelis said. The chief said there have been several such shootings at the training facility in recent years. In January 2016, a civilian student suffered an accidental gunshot wound to the leg. Sig Sauer Academy provides firearms and tactics training and is often used by law enforcement and military personnel, but instruction also is available to civilians.

Thompson had a pistol in his waistband, according to police. After officers took the gun, police said all four guests denied knowledge about the gunshot "multiple times," until police found a bullet hole in Thompson's bedroom wall. Thompson then claimed that Whetstone accidentally discharged the pistol into the floor and then brought the gun to him, according to police. He told police that while he was trying to clear the gun after the initial shot, it discharged into the bedroom wall. Police said Thompson admitted he supplied the alcohol to the three teens, all of whom had been drinking, and that Whetstone admitted to firing the shot into the Canyon Ridge apartment below. Whetstone is charged with felony reckless endangerment, lying to officers, gun possession while under the influence and underage consumption of alcohol. The 19-year-old community service officer also resigned, university spokeswoman Ann Marie Deer Owens said. "Both Thompson and Whetstone were placed on administrative leave upon the VUPD’s learning of their arrests," Deer Owens said. "The two women who were in the apartment at the time of the arrests are unaffiliated with Vanderbilt." The two teenage women, Lauren Ramirez and Brittney Fox, were issued misdemeanor citations for underage alcohol consumption.

SHERMAN, TX, 4/08/17: An accidental shooting in the 1700 block of Texoma Parkway in Sherman left one man injured with a head wound and lead to the arrest of two others Saturday afternoon. The incident occurred shortly after 2:45 PM in the parking lot of the Wash Zone laundromat. Sherman Police Sgt. Riley Day said the victim, described as a 20-year-old man, and two other individuals were attempting to exit the parking lot of a shopping center on Texoma Parkway when one off the occupants allegedly fired a gun accidentally and struck the victim in the head. Day said the victim was located in the passenger seat, but he did not comment on where the shooter was seated. The victim was transported to Texoma Medical Center by ambulance in stable condition. “All shooting injuries are serious, but luckily for this gentleman ... all indications are that it was not life threatening,” Day said. Initial reports from some witnesses indicated the incident was a drive-by shooting or that a second vehicle was involved, but Day said all evidence pointed to the shooting occurring in the car itself. He added that there was no evidence of ill will or criminal intent and the incident appeared to be purely accidental. “Someone within the vehicle where the victim was shot is responsible for firing the round off,” Day said. “All information at this time shows the gun was fired by accident.” The two other occupants of the car were arrested shortly after 5:30 PM on charges of tampering with evidence. Following the incident, Day said the individuals attempted to hide evidence of the incident and provided police with “several pieces of bad information.” Day said it was too early to comment on any additional charges related to the shooting, noting that the investigation is still ongoing. Despite the severity of a shooting, Day said everyone was lucky that the situation was not more serious and no other individuals were injured. “We are very fortunate that after the firearm was shot off the bullet did not strike any innocent bystanders or people in this parking lot,” he said. “Not only are we lucky for that, we are lucky that the victim himself should be just fine.”

ARLINGTON, TX, 4/08/17: Investigators believe the shooting death of a 21-year-old Arlington man was an accident, despite a different ruling from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's office. Arlington police responded to a report of shots fired around 5 PM on Saturday in the 1700 block of Aberdeen Drive. On arrival, they found Jake Nelson in his home dead of a gunshot wound to the head. A witness to the tragic accident told homicide detectives that Nelson was "playing with the gun" and "carelessly" handling it when it misfired. The Medical Examiner's office ruled Nelson's death a suicide. But because a witness was in the room when it happened, and there's no evidence that Nelson had suicidal thoughts, the Department is standing by its determination his death was an accident. A spokesperson for the Medical Examiner's office indicated Tuesday the suicide ruling would not change. An autopsy report will not be available for at least 90 days.

OKEECHOBEE, FL, 4/08/17: A man competing in a shooting contest Saturday at the OK Corral Shooting Club over the weekend apparently became excited and shot himself. Deputy Jose Garduno, of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO), said the victim of the accidental shooting was taken to the Raulerson Hospital emergency room for treatment. The report did not indicate if the victim was admitted to the hospital. The 34-year-old West Palm Beach man reportedly told the deputy he was taking part in a shooting competition and became excited. “(He) stated he began dancing with the firearm in his right hand. While ‘busting a move’ (he) accidentally pulled the trigger,” noted the deputy’s report. “(He) was unaware a round was in the chamber, therefore shooting himself in the leg.” Deputy Garduno also pointed out when he arrived at the gun range all firearms had been “… stored for safety,”—including the victim’s. The victim, added the deputy, was conscious and in high spirits. The bullet entered the upper right side of the man’s thigh then exited near the knee. The projectile then traveled down his leg and struck the top of his shoe. “(He) admitted the shooting was an accidental discharge,” added the deputy. According to Deputy Garduno no charges were filed. The OK Corral Shooting Club is located at 9449 N.E. 48th St.

WICHITA, KS, 4/08/17: A shooting reported at a convenience store in east Wichita on Saturday may have been accidental, according to police. Just before 8 PM Saturday night, a 911 call referencing a man who had been shot led police to the QuikTrip at Central and Oliver, said a dispatch supervisor. In a news release sent Sunday morning, Wichita police said a 19-year-old man was discovered to have a gunshot wound to one of his legs. The man was taken to a local hospital shortly after 8 PM Saturday night in critical condition, the release said. Officers investigating the incident talked to a 34-year-old man who said he went to the QuikTrip store at Pawnee and Hillside in south Wichita with the 19-year-old Saturday night. The man said the 19-year-old waited in a vehicle while he went inside and when he returned, the younger man was bleeding and said that he had been shot. The 34-year-old man said he then drove the pair to the QuikTrip at Central and Oliver, where a police officer was flagged down for help, according to the release. A firearm was recovered by police from the vehicle that the two men were in. Police believe the younger man likely shot himself accidentally, though the release said the case is still being investigated.

BRISTOL, WI, 4/08/17: A Kenosha man underwent surgery after an accidental shooting at the Conservation Club of Kenosha County and was expected to survive, authorities said Sunday. According to a Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department report, James M. Kloet, 64, was flown to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa after the 10:56 AM shooting at the range, 21320 85th St., Bristol. He was in critical condition at the hospital Sunday night, according to a Froedtert administrative representative. According to the report, Kloet was discovered lying on the ground at the range and was initially attended to by Bristol Rescue personnel. Kloet had been shot by another man, Donald E. Bekeleski, 72, of Elk Grove Village, Ill. Authorities recommended charging Bekeleski with injury by negligent handling of a dangerous weapon. According to the report, Bekeleski was attempting to shoot a clay pigeon when his gun jammed. He told deputies he had pulled the trigger but nothing happened. He said he locked the action back and pointed the gun with the muzzle straight up. The man said he tried to retrieve the shotgun shell that did not fire, but was unable to. According to the report, he then tipped the muzzle of the shotgun down at a 45-degree angle and removed the shell. When he did so, the shotgun’s action closed and the gun fired. According to the report, Bekeleski said he did not have his finger on the trigger and did not know how it fired. He told deputies he did not know Kloet was standing to his left while clearing the gun but knew something was wrong when he heard the victim scream. The victim was about 20 feet away. According to the report, witnesses had warned the man in the past about firearm safety. Kloet was taken to Froedtert via Fight for Life helicopter and underwent surgery to remove multiple pellets from his stomach.

Chris Perez, a 17-year-old Lehigh Career and Technical Institute student, died as a result of a shotgun blast, Lehigh County Coroner Scott Grim said. Martin said Sunday that several people were in the home at the time of the shooting. The home is at the end of a rutted dirt driveway. On Sunday, Perez's aunt, Somarie Astudillo, said the teens were passing around the gun when it went off, striking her nephew in the stomach. no.  other countries have gangs, inner cities, drug use, etc.  yet they do not have thousands of  gun related deaths a year and the murder rates are much lower as a result.  again, only the good old US of A has off the chart murder rate in western democratic society.
what do you know about Switzerland their gun laws / violence?

the problem isn't the guns - its the people wanting to do harm.

everything factors in .... gangs, inner cities, population, drug use, capital punishment, etc etc

no they wouldn't , they'd find another way
Incorrect. i know you’ve made up your mind, but your just wrong. Removing guns reduces suicide rates:

“Policy implications. For male persons, policies that reduce firearm ownership will likely reduce suicides by all means and by firearms. For female persons, such policies will likely reduce suicides by firearms.”

“The researchers found having access to a gun was tied to a three-fold increase in the likelihood that people would kill themselves.”

“Differences in suicide rates across the U.S. are best explained by gun prevalence”

Random week in 2017. This is a weekly series.
to be fair, also list all the people who hurt themselves with drugs, knives, automobiles, how many people drown, choked ...... how many dogs mauled kids and people?  ......  yes i would like to see zero gun accidents. But truth is, I don't want anyone to get accidentally hurt and yet they do.

Removing guns reduces suicide rates:
when have we removed guns and proven that to be true ?

again - the problem is NOT the way people want to kill themselves. If it was, ya'll would have banned pills and drugs a long time ago and I mean ban them from anyone using them, total bans like the anti-gunners want to total ban guns

ya'll are so focused on the symptoms you fail to see the disease

You clearly can’t bother to read what was linked for you. Fewer guns = fewer suicides. More guns = a high suicide rate. Some studies theorize that suicide by gun may be a product of combining rash decisions with easy use. Regardless, you’re wrong.

I've done it often enough - you ever go to a concert? downtown events? no ?

a larger % of people live in cities did you know ?
I've been to probably 15-20 concerts in the greater Los Angeles area.  I never once thought that I should bring my roscoe.

Nope.

Perception is reality.
she understands that she doesn't want to be helpless and a victim in the world anymore - she wants to feel safe, secure and that nobody can harm here.

good for her !
Anymore? Nothing in the statement above said anything about her being a victim before. I guess in your world we're all just sheep waiting to be slaughtered by the wolves. So scared.

lets say banning all guns stops XX ammount of suicides. the #1 chosen method of death then becomes sleeping pills, not guns. Ban sleeping pills? I mean that makes perfect sense right ?

the problem again and again and again is the people wanting to kill themselves or hurt other people. There are deep problems there man - and those need addressed. Taking away a tool will NOT make those problems go away and to be honest? ignoring the core problems is really a huge problem in the US and with the liberal left. Its sad it really is

Stealthycat is dug in but yeah, lots of research indicates that suicide rates change based upon how easy it is for someone to commit suicide.

Just changing the way medicine is packaged can have a huge impact.

I've been to probably 15-20 concerts in the greater Los Angeles area.  I never once thought that I should bring my roscoe.
really? Does LA not have crime then? or are you just rolling the dice it won't be you ?

say, do ya'll lock your doors at night? lock your car when you're in the mall or at work? security alarms? why ?

Stealthycat is dug in but yeah, lots of research indicates that suicide rates change based upon how easy it is for someone to commit suicide.
I am dug in

Nobody ever says " well damn, I can't get a .357 handgun" and wake up tomorrow with no mental issues, depression or suicidal thoughts.

Charming.
I don't mean to offend. The will to live has to start with the person - they can be helped with every help in the world and if they don't want to live, there isn't anything you or I can do about it.

on a totally separate note ..... assisted suicide, how do you feel on that? or have a machine/drugs button and a person can push it if they want? Agree, disagree, dunno ???

I have seen this debate before and I've found that not having a gun available for a suicidal person can help prevent it.  A gun is easier to use, quicker and is a higher percent chance of being fatal over other ways to commit suicide.  There is a better chance a person survives a suicide attempt from drugs or cutting.  There is also a chance that person decides they no longer want to commit suicide after failing to the first time.  Using a gun most often does not allow for a second chance.
