while Simmons didn't actually play in a game...he was part of the NBA experience that other true rookies didn't participate in.....Simmons got the benefit of being around film sessions, team meetings, practices, team huddles during games, locker rooms at halftime, breaking down matchups, in game adjustments, best seat in the house for every game, experiencing what its like to have to travel all year, etc.....the list goes on and on....IMO, its not just playing time that should determine whether you are a "rookie" or not....

Really liked that Duncan et al had the Nets re-signing Joe Harris, and for a pretty good price of 3/16.5 I believe. Wasn't a huge fan of the Jerami Grant signing, though - seems like this new regime is aiming for a 1 in / 4 out offense and a 30% 3P shooting wing doesn't fit that vision well. They already have Rondae Hollis-Jefferson out there shooting a cool 24% from deep.
I love Grant. I think he can play the 5 if need be, and I do think his shooting will improve. I definitely don't think of him as just a wing.

Is there a summary online of the Dunc'd mock offseason?  I can't find one.  I'm curious about the results but don't want to invest all the time in listening.
The first 7:45 of part 2 recaps all of part 1 if you want to listen to that for at least part of it.  Then they did Evans to Indy at 3/30, Seth Curry to Charlotte at 3/18 with last year non-guaranteed (possibly guarantee based on incentives), then looks like Favors at 1/8 to Jazz or possibly around that to Lakers.  That's as far as I've gotten.  Maybe they will do a recap at the end of part 2.

Thunder fans are starting to talk themselves into George coming back. I feel bad for them. Is it possible that the Thunder won't even make him an offer? Fairly certain ownership doesn't want him back, payroll would be absurd.

Age?  Would be a rationale to make the Simmons/Mitchell ROY debate a bit moot.

Agreed.  Grant's athleticism makes him a really versatile player that can work alongside various player combinations.  Sub in/out a 1 or a 5 and he can slide over to accommodate.

Even if PG13 returns OKC will be forced to make some really difficult roster decisions to avoid an astronomical luxury tax bill.  They'd take that and figure it out, but it seems much more likely that we'll be debating the over/under of Westbrook to Adams pocket passes vs Carmelo jab step totals.  Or Anthony will take a ~$3 million dollar buyout to go partial banana boat somewhere.

He’s definitely played really well in OKC. If he can improve his shooting, that solves a lot of issues with how he could fit in Brooklyn - as it stands right now, a starting lineup with Hollis-Jefferson/Grant/Allen at 3-5 would have pretty atrocious spacing. On the other hand, as a 5 he could be really useful since the Nets have literally zero big man depth. It’ll be interesting to see what kind of a contract teams are willing to give him.

Mater Dei is a storied program but it's in Orange County a good hour commute from Lebron's homes and since it goes by LAX it can be 2 hours any time of day in either direction. They beat Sierra Canyon in the Southern Section finals this year. Both teams advanced to the state tournament and Mater Dei was beat in the first round. Sierra Canyon is state champs and probably will be again next year with or without Bronny.

Sierra Canyon is a much much bigger draw for talent these days

LeBron's opt-out date is the 29th.  DeAndre Jordan the same.  I'm not sure if all of them are then.
Yeah, I think that’s the league-wide deadline although some individual contracts can have different requirements. If the Rockets are a real possibility for Lebron, we’ll know in the next couple days.

when you go back and forth to school in a helicopter it doesn't matter...

Remember when the Magic gave a ton of money to Biyombo, Fournier, and Mack in one off-season?

Lol ? this team.

I will jot down my thoughts on their upcoming off-season but I really think Aaron Gordon might be odd man out. They simply don't have enough minutes between him, Isaacs and future MVP Mo Bamba. Unless of course they can run Biyombo out of town.

Not that it really matters since it’s just nerds being nerds for the entertainment of nerds, but the Duncan podcast has

Gordon signing with the Pacers.

Oh yeah I heard.

Last night Gordon said he wants the max. Obviously Orlando has no incentive to offer him that. Let's see what the market dictates. My guess is they match any offer.

I'm intrigued by sign and trade for him. Off the top of my head he is one of the top 4-5 RFAs out there.

Whatever the wrong thing to do, is the most likely outcome. Fun times

Of course they have enough minutes. Why do people keep saying this? Players don’t play 48 minutes a game.

Why would any team make a decision on Aaron Gordon based off of Biyombo?

listened to most of the free-agency mock. my takeaway:

If FAs - esp RFAs - wanna make 8figs a year, they better either be worth 20+/yr or take their qualifying offer and hope things are better next yr as UFAs. According to these guys, the whole league is made of salary dumpers or teams w cap who will use their cap room to get future picks for servicing dumpers. There were a lot of huh? moments but these guys nerd knowledge was so much more intensive than not only me but at least a1/3 of GMs, so they could be right.

I guess I don't want to invest $20+ million a year in Gordon.

I'd rather see what Isaacs can do at the 4 full time. Gordon at the 3 was a disaster.

Drafting Bamba definitely muddies the waters.

Biyombo, Vucevic and Bamba at 5

Gordon and Isaacs at 4.

Sorry somebody has to go. Ideally that's Biyombo and Vucevic. But that isn't happening.

Vuc could be moved tomorrow. Biz is a non-factor. He’s never playing major minutes again.

So the Lakers are getting pressured to trade for Kawhi by Friday. I am assuming it is so LeBron can decide to opt out and sign as a free agent. Now there are rumblings that Paul George isn't a sure thing for the Lakers.

There is a chance this could blow up on them and they get no one.

More like San Antonio is feeling pressure from not getting any good offers from teams that are being told Kawhi won't sign with them, so they are leaking this BS about the Lakers feeling pressure to get a star ahead of free agency while also indicating that they would now take offers from the Lakers. The Spurs know that as soon as the Lakers get LeBron and PG, they are going to be in a bad spot leverage-wise.

I have a hard time buying that. The Spurs have time to trade Kawhi. The Lakers have 2 days before they have to start courting LeBron and George.

If all the offers are bad for Kawhi then they just take the least bad offer.

I supposed the Spurs made Magic come out and say that if he doesn't land a top free agent by start of the season next year he won't have to be fired he will quit.

There is a chance ...they get no one.
I don't think that's necessarily a catastrophe. Even if they got those three together, I'm not sure they'd be favored to beat Golden State, and they'd have mortgaged their future to get into that position.

Unless it's LeBron doing the pressuring, I don't see who could be applying external pressure to the Lakers to make a deal with San Antonio. I figure LeBron is tuned in enough to know that there's not a whole lot the Lakers can do if the Spurs aren't taking their phone calls.

there are multiple teams that have been rumored to be trading with the Spurs that can offer better packages then the Lakers without gutting their team. the team mentioned in that report on bleacherreport that is interesting is the Clippers. I wonder if they do Deandre Jordan for Kawhi straight up?

One could only hope.

:coffee:

Is there any chance LeBron goes to the Lakers without at least one of either George or Kawhi?
My personal opinion is no way. In the scenario that he really wants to go to the Lakers and they get no free agents or don't trade for Kawhi, I see him opting in with Cleveland or signing another 1 and 1. If he just wants to go where it is his best chance to win then you see him look at the Celtics, 76ers, or Houston. I think he really wants to move to LA, so if I were betting on this I would say that he stays in Cleveland if the Lakers strike out on everyone.

so fun rumor time.....

Heard part of this on podcast (Sixers Beat). looking across sportsbooks there is one sportsbook which has the the odds for Lebron going to Philly way below everyone else. most books have the number now over +1000, and betdsi has the number at +350. They apparently employ Chris Sheridan, who was the guy who had the inside scoop that Lebron was going back to Cleveland when no one else did.  :tinfoilhat:  Fun nonetheless, but it is interesting and you often don't see a sportsbook differ so much from the rest of them.

They can, but they don't.

Ramona Shelburne and Woj are saying the Spurs are talking to the Lakers now.
i think that says the Spurs got an offer they like. Now they hold it over LA to see what they can bleed from them, and if Lakers can get away without blinking Spurs make the trade they have on the table. If Lakers get the trade, i would think they are giving up a ton.

I guess I see the opposite takeaway being just as (if not more) likely. Leonard poisoned the well for the other teams, the Spurs have been offered less than stellar deals, the Lakers are more likely to offer something better than what they've heard so far from everyone else.

i wonder if now is when they get the most value for Kawhi, or if Spurs are better off holding him and will get better offers later. i don't think they have to feel rushed, but maybe

Who knows. They could gamble and wait until closer to the trade deadline and see if some unexpected contender would given them something juicy to put themselves over the top for one season - but you can't know that or what they have at this time. I'd figure most other franchises are looking at Leonard as a one year rental with a slim opportunity to sell him on a longer term deal. In that case, the longer you wait, the less time they get out of the rental, the less value he has to a potential trade partner.

Also I imagine it'll be tougher to work out the cap space restrictions teams will have if they wait until all the free agency stuff happens. Seems like this is the time of year there would be the most fluidity in terms of player movement, cap space, multi team deals, etc.

If you're the Sixers, and you could be 100% certain LeBron would sign there if you already had Kawhi - would you trade Fultz and Simmons (and Bayless) for Leonard to make that happen? I'ld have to believe the Spurs would be happy to get Simmons for Leonard.

i wouldn't. some may, and would have to consider, but team is built for Ben and Embiid for next 7 years or so. that foundation is hard to give up. and yes, you would think Spurs would be all over Ben for Kawhi. would certainly have to think about it, but i am very confident Ben will be shooting outside more this upcoming year, and if he gets a dependable jump shot his ceiling is higher than Kawhi
