Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Thread (4 Viewers)

“Socialism” vs. “capitalism” is a false dichotomy

“We need go-go capitalism to afford a generous welfare state, and people won’t support go-go capitalism without a safety net. “Socialists” and Republicans forget different parts of this lesson.”

”...the new democratic socialists running for office aren’t calling for nationalization of industry or the abolition of private property (though some of their cheerleaders are). They’re calling for an extravagantly beefed-up welfare state, and a shift toward stronger governmental regulation of various industries. These are questionable ideas, but they won’t turn America into Venezuela.”

“According to the conservative Heritage Foundation’s Index of Economic Freedom, for instance, Denmark and Sweden — where taxes are high and welfare spending is lavish — outscore the United States in the security of property rights, ease of starting a business, openness to trade, and monetary freedom (a measure of inflation and price controls). Both narrowly beat the US in overall “capitalist” economic freedom, despite receiving a stiff penalty from Heritage for their big-spending ways.”

“I disagree with Elizabeth Warren on a slew of policy particulars — on the minimum wage, single-payer health care, and the Trans-Pacific Partnership, for example — but I think her recent affirmation of the progressive power of capitalist dynamism gets the bigger picture basically right... We need markets to make us richer. But we also need them to make all of us richer, and that’s not just about making sure that we’re indemnified against the risks of wrecking-ball competition. It’s also about making sure the basic rules of the game aren’t rigged to favor people who already won, locking the rest of us into a lower tier of possibility. Warren is a free-market social democrat in the Nordic mold. Her vision is a far cry from the anti-capitalist agenda of the Ocasia-Cortez and the DSA.”

The best America lies somewhere between Warren and Ocasia-Cortez.

But yet those homogeneous countries score higher than us in the undoubtedly-totally-scientific happiness scales.  Go figure.

My point isn't that we should become less diverse or more restrictive of immigration.  It's that it's silly to point to pseudo-science like "happiness" and try to infer something about economic policies while simultaneously ignoring other differences.
For anyone interested in the discussion we were having about the Nordic countries and measuring happiness last week, the most recent Freakonomics podcast discusses it:  http://freakonomics.com/podcast/happiness/.

Not really anything groundbreaking for those of us who have thought about these issues before but might be useful for anyone that thinks our policies should singlemindedly attempt to increase GDP.

this shapiro guy reminds me of the wallflower who didnt even go and talk to a papershaker telling us all at the dance that he doesnt like her anyhow brohan come on we all know she aint giving you the time of day and we all know why take that to the bank bromigos

I think she's the future of the Democratic Party.  My 15 year old lefty daughter loves her.
I agree. As she cleverly pointed out on twitter a couple days ago, she's the same age Paul Ryan was when he was first elected to Congress. She has a remarkable grasp of the power of social media. Thus far she's shown the ability to stay true to the cause while adjusting to her new role.

Conservatives seem to understand her potential too; she's living rent-free in their heads.  See eg the ridiculous Ben Shapiro publicity stunt that started this thread.

Surprisingly enough this seems to be the only thread about AOC so I'll put this here:

Lawmakers push review of new member events after complaints over lobbyists at Harvard orientation

What she has be able to accomplish before she's even sworn in is genuinely amazing.
I would sworn there was a thread devoted to her.

Maybe @JohnnyU can change the tread title to something specifically about Ocasio-Cortez unless he wants keep it about Ben Shapiro.

If he doesn't then either you or I can start a separate AOC thread.

She minored in economics at Boston University where she graduated cum laude.  Where did you go to college, what did you minor in and what level of distinction did you graduate with?
I graduated cum laude (3.455) with a bachelor of science degree in Computer Science and a minor in business.   Her views on healthcare for everyone and no valid responses in how to pay for it is one of many things that make her look bad.

That's impressive.  What college?

You said She doesn't know basic economics or civics.

Do you think she's capable of learning basic economics (I'd say she does know basic economics, but let's not split hairs since you're the expert) or civics?

Right, even a basic Wikipedia search also shows she has civic experience having interned for a US Senator and serving in key positions in some non-profit and commununity outreach stuff. She's young and is inexperienced in the world of Congress but it is ridiculous how much negativity is thrown her way relative to all the people serving in Congress.

Who do you genuinely think has your and the middle /working class best interests in mind?   AOC or Trump?
I think Trump knows how to help the middle / working class better than AOC.  She doesn't seem to have a clue in reality.

Do any other countries on the planet have healthcare for everyone?  How do they pay for it?  Be curious if it's something that can be done.

Cumberland College in 1984  (now University of the Cumberlands).  I'm not an expert on civics or economics, so her and I seem to be in the same boat.

Okay, her views make her look bad (to you).

But how do those views show that she doesn't know "basic civics"?

Can you give some examples?
God I hate repeating the same stuff in multiple threads.  How about low unemployment, more money in the paycheck, bringing back jobs that were recently overseas?  That's just a few and I really don't want to rehash the same crap.

I'm really only concerned about her economics but she has made some basic civics blunders, one being  her comments on the  "Three Chambers" of government.

"Tax cuts and other moves that produce incremental short-term gains are always good and never backfire!" says man chastising a congresswoman for her rudimentary understanding of economic policy.

Tariffs and trade wars, you forgot tariffs and trade wars.

You know what.  This just isn't the day for me to start going back and forth.  I just don't have it in me today, sorry.
