Taysom Hill - NO Saints - QB (but also other things...)

Would you go get him for free off the waiver wire if you could?  Payton just got an extension... do you think that he has Hill penciled in as his starter at some point (i.e. maybe next season)?

Redraft, keeper, or dynasty? And what class of player is at the end of your roster?

Seems to be a lot of negative sentiment towards Hill on twitter and in the media, like most people are eager for him to fail for some reason (I guess to validate their preconceived notion of him as no

I decided to grab him.  if i put him in at the TE spot and he actually plays and scores a lot, it will be one of my favorite FF things ever.

Like a TE1.

I meant to say he's more Mike Vick than Steve Young

Pretty sure the Saints would be downright giddy if he’s Michael Vick.

While we're drawing comparisons ... I figure Taysom Hill's short-term upside is something of a combo of Kordell Stewart and Mark Brunell. What they lacked in passing efficiency, they made up in extending passing plays and in their own rushing attempts. Not to say either guy was useless in the pocket -- Brunell even led the NFL in passing yardage his second year in Jacksonville.

To be in the same breath as Steve Young, Hill would have to get to the point of completing 2/3 of his passes consistently. Don't think he's there yet.

These comments seem to fit better here than in the Bridgewater thread.

Dynasty.  I would be bummed if I picked him up and Brees were the starter in 2021.  I could live with sitting on him through 2020, though.

Dropped. They're going to split time most likely and the only reason I have them is so that they can play Week Seven. That's Chicago.

So I'd only get one of those scores. No way.

Taysom Hill rushed two times for 33 yards and one touchdown and caught both of his targets for 12 yards and another score in the Saints' Week 13 win over the Falcons Thursday night.

Hill was the star of Thanksgiving night, getting the evening started with a blocked punt on special teams at the conclusion of the Falcons' opening three-and-out drive. Hill's receiving score was a three-yard pop pass from Drew Brees while the rushing one was a 31-yard keeper right up the gut. Hill is obviously not a fantasy option on such limited touches, but he's obviously a playmaker with the ball in his hands.

This guy is awesome. Did I hear the announcers right in saying he may take over for Brees at QB eventually?

I had considered him earlier in the season, but for his style of play, he's already pretty old.

Right now, people are thinking “impossible!” ... but Taysom Hill is legitimately in play to be the Saints opening-day starting QB in eight months.

For the first time, it has struck me that Brees may no longer control his exit from New Orleans. Not sure if Payton has it in him to initiate the breakup, though.

🤷‍♂️ Many doubted Lamar Jackson too.

He might not have a long career, but it will be exciting.

Why not 2020?

As much as I like Hill, Teddy seemed to earn a chance to start. Maybe go Teddy/Taysom for 2020.

Bridgewater is not under contract with the Saints. It's assumed that the market will outbid the Saints for Bridgewater, with the team still having over $21 million in dead cap to clear for Drew Brees. The team will either clear that dead money in the 2020 league year if Brees retires now, or in 2021 if Brees plays one more year.

Makes sense, if another team thinks he's starter material. Chargers? Pats?

They are nothing alike.  Taysom's ceiling is Tebow.

Perhaps. Although Taysom is more dynamic.

I like the player, but am skeptical of him becoming a consistent starting QB. He adds to the team, but I don't think he can carry it.

But we've been surprised before.

Speaking in an interview during Super Bowl week, restricted free agent Taysom Hill said he "definitely" views himself as a franchise quarterback.

Hill said he is willing to leave New Orleans for a chance to start. "I think as you look at the other questions: Is it New Orleans? Is it somewhere else?," Hill asked rhetorically. "We haven't gotten into free agency long enough to really know how these guys view me and we'll just handle it as it comes." Hill has become a hot Twitter topic as the offseason kicks into gear, but the reality is that he's a soon-to-be 30-year-old gadget player who has attempted 13 career passes. The Saints opted against involving him more as a passer while Drew Brees was sidelined last season. That spoke volumes. Even if Brees retires, the odds the Saints view Hill as Hill's replacement are slim.

"Conor: And also, if he's the next Steve Young, why are you having him cover kicks and using his throwing arm to bust wedges?"

These guys write for MMQB and don't know or don't care that wedges are no longer legal on special teams?

Yeah I just don’t think he’s a good enough passer to be a franchise QB. He’s surely a great football player and I love watching him but he wouldn’t be any better than Tebow for an extended period of time.

He will be 30 when the season starts and he has 6 total completions in his career. Calling this guy a franchise QB is insane. He would be lucky to be as good as Tebow.

NFL.com's Tom Pelissero believes it "stands to reason" that restricted free agent Taysom Hill will get a first- or second-round tender from the Saints.

The first-round tender is projected to be in the $4.66 million range, with the second-rounder checking in around $3.27 million. Such a move would almost certainly scare away rival teams from signing Hill to an offer sheet, as it would mean the Saints would get a first- or second-round pick if they declined to match. Despite how much debate Hill is generating on Twitter, we would be stunned if any team but New Orleans valued Hill that highly. We are still skeptical even the Saints do. The primary data point from Hill's 2019 was his lack of passing usage during Drew Brees' five-game absence.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Saints plan to use a first-round tender on restricted free agent Taysom Hill.

This confirms previous reports. The first-round tender would pay Hill $4.66 million and allow the Saints to a match any offer sheet or get back a Day 1 pick. Hill managed seven touchdowns last year but it's a lot of money for a 29-year-old gadget player with 13 career pass attempts. We don't see any chance teams value Hill that high.

He's worth much more to the saints than anyone else in the league, and this is coming from someone who has him on a 4 year dynasty contract.

Real football and fantasy football (dynasty) are two totally different beasts.  Player cost and rosters requirements/limits will make a difference but the direction the NFL is going with running QB's and players that can operate outside of the play design when it breaks down makes a player like Taysom Hill that much more of an attraction and creates value. You must have room on your roster if you're going to stash him (Captain Obvious) however with that said he will never be this cheap on the open market again. The cost of obtaining Hill and the reward if he hits makes the needle move for me in the direction of picking him up and stashing him without a ton of analyzing the move but let's look at the player. Hills size and speed are off the chart at the position. Just because he has not attempted a lot of passes does not mean he can't. He has all the intangibles you want in a player and maybe more important is Payton loves him. I think the Saints believe he is a franchise QB enough to tender him at the first-round pick level ( I think that will happen shortly). I picked him up for 2.00 of my waiver wire two weeks ago. If he falls on his face I have lost 2.00 of bid dollars and the roster spot for the time I hold him. I can afford that. If he takes over the Saints QB in 2021 then the "return on my investment" should be well worth the cost whether I keep him or trade him for additional assets.  The downside would be if they keep Teddy. I see this as unlikely but could happen.

The questions I have about Hill or factors that could be considered the downside is his age along with injury risk. I would include experience and yes the passing question though I personally think I have seen enough to say he can throw the football and complete passes well enough for the NFL.  I believe if given the chance by the Saints he can succeed.  It's going to be a long hold though but again if at anytime you need the roster space due to injury to players on your roster or any other reason the cost you paid makes him a painless cut.

He’s worth that money to the Saints but no team is giving up a first to get him from the Saints so it’s a smart offer for them. He can be their weapon plus back up Brees.

Totally agreed. I'm not even sure the saints would give up a first plus the contract to have him though.

I’ve often wondered why teams don’t have players like hill. Imagine the value of a guy that can/will fill

1. special teams

2. backup qb

3. Wr5

4. Rb4

That’s at least 3 spots usually filled by different players. Having extra roster flexibility seems invaluable. Imagine if your kicker could also punt effectively- cap savings and a roster spot (even if you pay that guy more.) It seems like a no brainer- I mean, what are kickers, punters with bad hands? Honestly it seems really stupid to pay 2 guys to do those kicks. Imagine paying 2 cooks at a restaurant- one cooks the steaks, and one cooks the burgers, but there is never more than one steak or one burger being cooked. Maybe burger guy has some more experience making perfect burgers, but the steak guy could probably be nearly as effective.
That said, it’s equally baffling to me when a kicker gets injured and a team brings out ndamakong suh for the extra point....

Kickers kick because they cant punt and vice versa. Linemen actually dont make bad kickers in a pinch... I've seen linemen kicking fgs at lower levels of football

I believe a team had their kicker do punts last year and it was an epic disaster

Atlanta had a guy a few years back that did both and was ok. Sometimes the punter will handle kickoffs where a team has an accurate veteran kicker that doesn’t have a big leg. Generally speaking though it’s two different skill sets.

I don't know if Snork was pulling our legs a bit, but it's definitely two sets of entirely different muscles being used in the kicking motion. One emphasizes the groin and hips, the other the hamstring and quadriceps (and hips - they don't lie).

Payton is trying to bait a sucker with that first round tender.

He doesn't think Hill is his franchise QB.  He thinks he is going to get a 1st round from one of the incompetent dumb dumbs who are running about half the franchises.

That said, the hubris involved with Sean Payton could involve thinking he can make Hill into a superstar...

is almost a redundant phrase. Then again, said hubris also allowed him to get out of unreason's own way and attempt that onside kick in the SB, forever preserving his legacy.

Oh no I’m dead serious- look, not everyone can kick accurate fgs, and not everyone can aim a punt and kick it high. I understand having two specialists. I also understand that these guys are pro athletes and I’m really surprised there hasn’t been a fg kicker that hasn’t also been able to punt (and the team lets them.) The difference in net punting yds between the top and bottom is seven yards. That’s not really a great indicator of a good punter, but more often a good punter is measured by accuracy on kicks from midfield. I’m not saying punters are useless, I’m advocating that you could possibly have a better WAR by using that roster spot elsewhere if you’re kicker could punt halfway decent.
