Any Trading Cards guys? (Sports, etc) (1 Viewer)

In case you guys want an idea

I bought these cards all for a few bucks a piece online as they are all in poor condition. Made this for my office at work. A lot of these were cards I could never afford as a kid.

Might make another or something similar for my garage.
I like that idea. I grew up a White Sox fan and just went through some of their rosters from the mid-70's to late-80's and I imagine I can get a lot of those cards for a couple bucks max. Where did you get the frame?

Amazon has em but I don't think I spent that much. Pretty sure I got mine at Michael's or some craft store....or maybe I did get it at amazon?

For cards from the era that you have—I’d personally go with PSA.  Vintage collectors seem to prefer them and modern collectors seems to prefer BGS.   If you have a few cards—they do offfer “volume” submission pricing.  If you are on facebook—some of the big boys like Layton Sports Cards use a dude named Josh Cohen-Sports. (That is his handle on facebook) to send their submissions in. Reputable people like him have direct accounts with PSA and being that they accumulate and submit lots of cards together from various collectors and sports cards groups—and will send them in together to get bulk pricing.   Also—the grading companies also have rules in how they want your cards to be sent in (some want them to be in penny sleeves and top loaded)—and using a service is nice because they will break down exactly how they need you to send them the cards.
Just an edit to this post—Josh Cohen-Sports is the owners personal facebook handle.  The actual business page with the information about how to submit card for grading would be PC Sportcards.    If you friend request him directly—he’ll just refer you to the business page where the information is—so you are better off connecting directly through PC Sportscards on facebook so you don’t have to get re-directed to it.

Yeah, after my post, I HAD to go to the card store. Now mind you, I had the perfect excuse (as a 50 year old T1 diabetic I don't get to go anywhere these days--my wife treats me like the Bubble boy), so as luck would have it, I spilled some soda this morning and ruined 4 of my daughter's Pokemon cards--they were commons. She is 15 and this is way beyond cool for her to be collecting this, but I think she keeps doing it so as to have something fun for us to do together.  Plus (pre-covid) it was an excuse for me to take her to the thrift shops a lot and that is what she lives for--kid was seriously born 6 decades too late. She loves vintage anything, especially clothes, and I get to look for old video games.

But back to the story--I really played it up to my wife how I ruined four of her cards and we NEEDED to replace them:  thus--trip to the card store. Wife bought it, but reminded me she was planning on taking me for Father's Day, so keep it in check.

Zero new football other than overpriced Prizm. She got 6 Pokemon packs. I got two Becketts--(I remember when they were 3.99) and three hockey packs==$73.00. She got a very nice rare hit. I got a Red Wing Rookie Jersey swatch card out of the 19-20 UD Trilogy pack---$17 a pack for three cards BTW. Kind of a slap in the face as an Av's fan--but fun was had by all.

Now, I am going to find a box break for this weekend--I don't do baseball--even though I have an absolute ton of it in my collection, but I am going to be part of a break come hell or high water in something. I may do racing if I have to.

Chinese counterfeiting is a major issue in coin collecting. I'd think that China knockoffs would be even more prevalent in the sports card world.

For those of you buying ungraded cards through eBay, how are you checking authenticity?

Feel like the trilogy are a bit over priced tbh. With that being said, I’ve bought a couple spots on vintage breaks trilogy since they don’t have much modern hockey things. What’d you pull, a Zadina? I got pretty lucky in the last break I did last week and pulled an Ilya Mikheyev auto at least.

I have opened probably 8 packs of Triology and the results have been underwhelming at best. My Detroit player was Taro Hirose--I never sell my cards, but can't help but notice this card is listed at 1.50 on Ebay with no bidders. Yep, that pack was worth $17.00--- :wall:  My kingdom for a Makar.....

Dam...was looking at boxes on ebay.....

Panini flawless.

3k a box....a box has 1 pack with 10 cards...lol

I'm stupid enough to consider this.

I guess it's good there is a high end market but I wish cards had a subsidized set like Topps where packs were still a buck to hook kids into it.

There is a group of us collecting the 2020 Topps Heritage set.  See the thread in baseball forum if interested.

Isn’t the story behind the Menendez brothers in the Mark Jackson card that someone figured out what game it was, and determined it was while they were on their spending spree after they murdered the parents?

The flawless boxes have some super sick stuff in them including diamonds, rubies, etc. pretty sure it’s a bit less than $3k tho.

You can always buy a box online and say some. Trilogy just seems like a solid product but unfortunately it’s super underwhelming :(

any other ideas for displays?

I've been randomly buying some old cards from my youth and thinking of displaying them in a garage or basement.

Not much traffic in my basement...maybe more in garage but any cool display ideas for say 100+ cards?

I've collected baseball cards off and on pretty much my entire life.

The sports card market is pretty crazy right now - it reminds me of the 90's.

Topps Project 2020 is the epitome of craziness.

I never heard of this until reading it here.

Is that the Menendez brothers in the background of an old Mark Jackson basketball card?

Lyle and Erik Menendez killed their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion on Aug. 20, 1989, but weren’t arrested until March 1990. In between, they went on a lavish spending spree. Erik, who had showed promise as a junior tennis player, spent $60,000 on a coach and competed in tournaments in the Middle East. Lyle, meanwhile, traveled back to Princeton, N.J., where he had attended college at that town’s Ivy League school. He purchased a popular student restaurant in Princeton, Chuck’s Spring Street Cafe, for $550,000 and renamed it Mr. Buffalo’s, while also taking shopping trips to New York accompanied by a team of bodyguards.

And at some point between the murders and their arrests, the Menendez brothers apparently acquired front-row tickets to watch Mark Jackson and the New York Knicks play at Madison Square Garden during the 1989-90 season. We know this because two men who bear a more-than-passing resemblance to the notorious killers ended up in the background of Jackson’s 1990-91 Hoops basketball card, which features a photo taken from the previous season.

This truly odd coincidence was first noticed by redditor Pirate_Redbeard and brought to wider attention by John Rosenberger on Twitter.

To further nail down the timeline, notice the black ribbon across the left shoulder of Jackson’s uniform. The Knicks wore the ribbons on their uniforms during the 1989-90 season in memory of longtime public-address announcer John Condon, who passed away weeks before the season began.

As a comparison, here are the Menendez brothers at one of their trials, which took place years after the murders: (Photo in Link)

Under normal circumstances, a basketball card for a player of Jackson’s caliber and fame — he was named an all-star just once in his 17-year NBA career — wouldn’t fetch all that much on the collectibles market: A 2008 Tuff Stuff basketball card price guide set the value for the 1990-91 Jackson Hoops card at either 5 or 10 cents, depending on whether you consider him a “common player” or a “minor star,” and one can purchase an entire box of 36 unopened packs from the 1990-91 Hoops set for $12 on eBay. But the apparent presence of the Menendez brothers on the card has caused its value to spike. Even though the Action Network’s Darren Rovell reported Monday night that eBay has started to take down the listings for the card because it does not allow items that are “affiliated with” murderers to be sold, a number of the cards still were being offered on Tuesday morning, with prices starting at 99 cents and rising steadily from there, with one seller offering a lot of 30 for $344.

Police arrested the Menendez brothers on suspicion of murder in March 1990 after getting a tip from the mistress of their therapist, who said she had overheard the brothers confess to the slayings during a session. They were not indicted on the charges until December 1992, following a lengthy court battle over the admissibility of the recorded therapy sessions. Initially tried separately, both initial juries could not reach verdicts, resulting in mistrials. Retried together, the two were found guilty of first-degree murder in April 1996, nearly seven years after the slayings of their parents, and in July of that year a judge sentenced them to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They were imprisoned in separate facilities until this year, when Lyle Menendez was transferred to the same California prison that housed his brother.

Yup--and have you seen the price that Panini is going to be asking for National Treasures basketball?  Dutch auction that is going to start at $30k a box--and the lowest that it will drop down to is $7500 a box.  My guess is that it sells out in the $10-15k a box range. Just nuts.

A little late to the game but I did buy the two that are up today. Don Mattingly and Frank Thomas

Just so happened that both of them are relevant to me as Don Mattingly grew up where I went to school (Evansville IN) so I have followed his career for awhile, especially now that he's in Miami. Also am a White Sox fan so Frank Thomas has already been a favorite of mine.

Getting tempted to go into the attic and dig through my giant box of mid 80s to early 90s baseball cards, not sure if anything from that era has real value, but it would be fun I guess.

Same here but more basketball.  I know I have at least 50 Jordan cards sitting in a box at my parents, maybe double that.  Not graded or anything though

If a card has a low population it’s valuable even if it’s a scrub player. You have to get them graded though and if you don’t get a 10 grade you’re out of luck.

Look for rookies too. I think that’s mostly what you should mostly be looking for.

On a bright note, found lots of packs for bowman 2020 at Target.

Wow I had no idea I thought the market had disappeared. I was a big collector in the 90’s when printing was out of control, so we are back to those times? I was considering if print levels were low getting back into it and hanging onto sets long term....sounds like it’s the opposite? What are the main brands these days that would be worth considering as a long term investment? I came up in the Topps/Upper Deck/Fleer/Score/Bowman/Leaf days.....none of them made it!?!?😂

Definitely depends on what sport you’re looking at. Baseball is mostly bowman, football/basketball is mostly panini, hockey is mostly upper deck.

1990 sports cards were for kids and collectors. 2020 sports cards are for degenerate gamblers.
Lol

Pretty much. I find myself not knowing that much about newer sets and cards but I like to gamble so....do I spend $1200 on this box of 5 packs in hops of getting a card that is worth 3k?

Things definitely have changed.  I remember debating if I should gamble and spend most of my budget on an 1984 Donruss pack for $5.

I really have a hard time dropping $50.00 on a pack of cards--let alone $100 or $1000. I mean, I love collecting, but some of this stuff is just not worth it. I watch box breaks on You Tube and you see some of these boxes like 2020 Football Panini Contenders which is $250 a box and sure you are guaranteed an auto, but some of the no name draftees you are more than likely to get is hard to swallow. I watched three boxes being opened last night and the best card was a Jonathan Taylor and it isn't even an on card auto--it is a sticker and is listed at $26,00 on Ebay now.

Its like a lottery scratch off.

Yeah--the prices for newer wax has really exploded. 2020 contenders draft is really a hot or cold product.  I've literally seen an entire case of 6 boxes ripped where every auto was a sticker auto and there was literally maybe only 2-3 numbered autos in the entire case.  I've also seen cases where there are like 6-8 numbered autos, and some big names like Tua in there.  Ripping packs and getting into breaks is truly like gambling--and make no mistake--to some it's very addictive.  I get my gambling fix by watching breaks but when it comes to collecting--I generally buy singles and collect sealed wax.  If you pick the right products and buy them at the right prices--seale wax tends to go up in value at a pretty solid rate.  The beauty of buying singles is that the gamblers that love ripping packs and getting into breaks always need to finance their habit.  I generally can find nice deals on singles as they are not attached to any particular card--they are just addicted to the gamble. It's kinda the same concept of why there are pawn shops next to casinos.  I know it sound sharky--but in reality--it's a great way to get good deals on stuff.

True. Speaking of that, the 2020 sets have to be at a much lower production number than recent years due to all that's going on. Good time to buy?

What I am more concerned about (or shall I say my pocketbook) is a glut of product hitting weeks apart from one another. I haven't seen Panini announce any product cancellation and yet, we don't have any product released yet (as far as football). Score should have been out, but it is #### pre-selling at $250 a box---SCORE at that price??. This is their supposed entry level product.

Elite is pre-selling around $250 a box--that is still way too high.

Man, I miss the old, simple days---you had UD putting out Collector's Choice for the young collectors. Then you got regular UD (sometimes a series one and two). Then they would usually put a a higher end product like SP and then finally a really high end expensive product. It was simple and had something for everyone. Now Panini puts out 12-14 product lines and some of them are just flat out garbage. But hey, when you are exclusive, you can do what you want I guess.

Kids are just chased away from the hobby because they can only afford whatever retail pack they can find at Walmart/Target at $4.99 and they won't pull anything of consequence (other than some kind of worthless, colored parallel) and that is only if the breakers haven't scarfed up these blister boxes/packs too.

The key to picking good investment worthy products is all about what your thoughts are on that particular rookie class.  For example--I loved the rookie class in 2018 in baseball, basketball, and football. In basketball--you have Luka, Trae, Ayton, Shai, Colin Sexton, Jaren Jackson, Marvin Bagley, Wendell Carter, Michael porter jr.   In baseball--their was Acuna, Albies, Devers, Ohtani, Soto,  Flaherty, Buehler, Hoskins,  Andujar, Ahmed Rosario...etc.   In football--there was Lamar Jackson, Baker Mayfield, Saquon Barkley, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold, DJ moore, Calvin Ridley, Vander esche,  Nick Chubb (I chuckle everytime a breaker says "nice chubb" lol).  Because I liked those rookie classes--I purchased sealed boxes and kept them sealed. Most have gone up in value 3x-15x what I paid for them.

This year--basketball products are insanely high--for example-National Treasures--which is considered the best basketball product comes out tomorrow on Panini's website. The price for a box starts at $30k and will get reduced every 5 minutes until it sell out. The lowest price it will reach is $7500--and my guess is that it will be gone probably around the $10-12k range. The reason for the insane prices this year in hoops are Zion and Ja.  The scary thing is--if you open a box and don't pull a Ja or a Zion--you probably just lost a lot of money.  The caliber of the rookies in a product will be the driving force of the future value of that product.   I'm personally not super sold on this years rookie class in football--and thats why I'm not investing much in football this season.

I want the Bronco rookies and that is all I need this year. Probably won't be doing a lot of case breaks because the Denver slots are inflated due to Jeudy/Hamler/Ojemudia offensive picks running things up.

I scored big in 2018 with the Denver breaks--I managed to get multiple Chubb autos/jerseys. I also got a pretty low # Manning auto in one of the breaks.

Explain box breaks to me...like I'm 9 and its 1987 again.

I mean I think I kinda know how it works but not sure. I was skimming last week and saw a 87 topps rack pack box break.

There are several types of breaks.  Most will be what is known as PYT or RT.  PYT means “pick your team” and RT means “random team”. With pick your team—you literally get to pick and pay for the team that you want—and once all teams are claimed at paid for—they open the box—and you get the cards from players from your team.  With PYT—each team will command a different price based on the value of the potential players for each team in that particular product.

With random team—everybody pays a set amount—so if there are 30 teams in the NFL—they sell 30 spots. Once every spot is paid for—they put your name and each team name in a randomizer—and you get assigned a random team.   The beauty of random teams is that everybody pays the same amount.  For example—lets say you want a shot at a Zion rookie.  In a PYT format for Noir basketball—the pelicans are going for $1200 for a case.  In a random team style—you’re probably paying $200 for a chance to land them.

Ok. Kinda what I thought.

So on a box break. If you paid for the pelicans and no pelicans came out you get nothing?

On  PYT does the box owner set the price of the teams or auction? Or either?

Some set the starting point--but a lot of times the popular teams will just skyrocket and there is no need for a base.

Just when I say I am out, they drag me back in--just bought the Nuggets in 2018-19 Certified 12 box break. Hey $35.00 isn't a bad price for that break, but it is one of the Canadian breaks where you have to wait for all the teams to sell out before they break.

Yes—-in many if not most breaks—there will be teams that get no cards. For some premium products—one box is literally one pack. National treasures basketball that comes out tomorrow will probably end up selling out for $10-12k per box—and literally—one box is one pack—maybe 10-12 cards.  Therefore if you buy into a one box break—you have to do so knowing that there are 30-32 teams in the league—and only 10-12 cards in that box.   You can have boxes where you have 2-3 cards from the same team—which in turn means that close to 25 people will get goose egged.  It’s truly a form of legal gambling.  You also want to break with a reputable breaker—as there have been instances where breakers search the products or rig the breaks and make fake names and keep the big teams for themeself.

I would be more worried about something like the McDonald's Monopoly game, where before the cards even get to the consumers hands someone is skimming off all the valuable ones.

That happens as well. You'll see unprofessional breakers that "accidentally" take the product off of the area where they are doing the recording.   There are a few famous breaker incidents where breakers have switched cards out.  Probably the most famous was when a breaker switched a card out while distracting the viewing audience with a brandin cooks card.  Other breakers like Platinum have been caught selling and breaking products that were opened and resealed.  If you want to join a break--you really need to go with established and reputable breakers.  Right now--I mainly break with Layton,  Sportscard Investors, and Mojo.  There used to be a small breaking group called Panda--but unfortuntely the owner had to shut things down due to some family medical issues.   The link below shows the famous brandin cooks break where the dude clearly switches a card out.
