As a pro-Confederate rally marched through Oxford on Saturday, members of the Ole Miss men’s basketball team took a knee during the national anthem. At least six players took a knee before Ole Miss faced off against Georgia.

It’s unclear why the players chose to take a knee, though there is speculation it could be related to a pro-Confederate rally in the area.

Two pro-Confederate groups — Confederate 901 and Hiwaymen — are holding a protest to express their disappointment that Ole Miss will no longer use Colonel Reb as its mascot, according to Nick Suss of the Clarion Ledger

these players pissed off a LOT of fans by doing this ... and for what ?

hardly a protest/rally when you only get 75 people to show up ... and after the coach said they'd respect the flag too

They almost took a knee to a 1 win conference team at home.  UGA had a clean look to win that thing.  As far as the University, Colonel Reb was retired years ago, which is the mascot the pro-Confederate people were supposedly upset about.  I actually support the University and it's athletic programs through my business and specifically their basketball program.  We will see what the crowd looks like vs Kentucky a week from Tuesday.

By and large, I think the racial environment is not that bad here in downtown MS.  It's less than perfect sure, but it's not southern Ohio or middle Pennsylvania bad. How deep does one's failure plumb to protest around a mascot that was disbanded 8 years ago?

The problem is that this form of protest isn’t actually associated with their actual complaint (ie “social justice”). Maybe a protest at the local courthouse or police station would be more appropriate. Additionally, protesting at the national anthem will always be viewed as insulting by a large percentage of the population to the American flag, the US in general, and especially veterans.

if the coach / university doesn't have a no kneeling policy or something - then they can choose to kneel

and fans can choose to not watch and buy tickets and recruits can choose not to go to that college etc etc

but the ramifications of them kneeling to protest maybe 75 people in a street ?

Here is a quote from the coach Kermit Davis

"This was all about the hate groups that came to our community to try to spread racism and bigotry," Davis said. "It's created a lot of tension for our campus. Our players made an emotional decision to show these people they're not welcome on our campus, and we respect our players' freedom and ability to choose that.''

good for the coach to say that I suppose

there are going to be a lot of people pissed about it I'd expect - go out to the streets and protest against people they don't like, against politics or ideas they don't like ........... disrespecting our national anthem?

like I said with Kap .... the absolute LEAST amount of effort they can do for a protest ..... that's the reality but hey, its their right to do it. its the fans right to be mad too and if 1,000 0r 4,000 or 200 quit going to the game, that's their choices to do that too

Why is the first amendment suddenly not applicable during the national anthem?  These players are doing exactly what we've been taught is the correct way of showing displeasure with society, peaceful protest.

Freaking Trump could give two hoots about the flag, he openly lied and dodged service, but somehow his base ignores this while responding to his dog whistle of us vs them.  He really has created a cult for himself.

Wanna place a friendly wager on whether Trump tweets about it today?

Trump wants this to be about him. He knows how it rolls up his base. He plays them like a fiddle.

Who said it isnt applicable? That seems like a made up argument. It is also kind of dumb when you are getting upset about people voicing their opinions. But ho hum, just more do as i say, not as i do.

Why didn’t the whole team kneel?
Obviously hypnotized by a maga hat they saw.

Proud of them 👍 they are good Americans, unlike the traitor KKK and American Fascists along with their supporters.

It takes courage to take a stand in the face of racism and bigotry. Proud of these young men
kneeling for 120 seconds at a ball game isn't courage

did you read this about the protest ?

White supremacists and white-supremacist symbols are not welcomed at the protest, Confederate 901 co-founder George “K-Rack” Johnson said in a video posted to Facebook on Saturday morning.

“If you are associated with any kind of white-supremacist or hate groups or anything like that, you are not welcomed at this event,” Johnson said.

“If you have any kind of symbolism of any kind of white nationalist groups or white supremacy groups, you will be asked to leave. You might get your ### whooped … It’s only Confederate flags, Mississippi state flags, and American flags.”

Billy Sessions of The Highwaymen also denied that the pro-Confederate rally is about race in a video posted to Facebook on Saturday.

“We’re not a racist group,” Sessions said. “We ain’t got no ties to any damn white nationalist or white supremacist group whatsoever … We’re just Southern guys that believe our history and our heritage should be left alone. We ain’t coming out here calling for anything else. Leave our #### alone. Be happy.”

Trumps tweets are pointless.

I'm surprised that posters here haven't linked Trump to the shooting of Martin Luther King. Or being Rosa Parks bus driver.

This thread is about players kneeling in response to others protesting the replacement of a mascot. Does everything have to be about Trump?

Hmm 🤔

Your governor is the nephew of one of Emmet Till’s murderers.

The state flag is the only one that contains the confederate flag.

Not that bad?

The players had to know that their actions would be unpopular with some of the fan base. Which could lead to being boo’d , hate mail, threats of bodily harm and maybe even death threats.

Courage per Webster - Mental or moral strength or venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear or difficulty

Have you forgotten that the public had moved on from the kneeling protests until Trump put it back into the news again by attacking Kaepernick and saying to get this SOB off the field in order to pander to his base? Plus he has revisited this issue several times since then.

No, everything doesn't have to be about Trump, but he has been front and center concerning this subject matter.

Over/Under on this thread is 300 pages.  And some serious mental gymnastics flipping back and forth from the kneeling is about police brutality to about Trump to about something else.  Read the Kaepernick thread for a preview.

And there it is. It all comes back to Trump.
omfg.  Who's incessant tweeting and dog whistling about NFL players kneeling exploded the issue onto the national stage?

If the moron had just #### and stayed golfing, the country would barely register these occurrences.

Trump supporters are simply amazing, when people like the Maga bomber and this coast guard dude arise targeting media members and prominent dems, you're like, Trump didn't cause this!  Despite all contrary evidence of his rhetoric calling these people the enemy of the country and cheering on violence at his rallies.

Simply incredible world we live in.

When Trump’s response to Kaepernick is described as a “dog whistle” it has clearly jumped the shark.

The Confederate flag is viewed as a symbol of hate for many people.

It wasn't a part of this thread. Or even the news story until someone brought it into this tread.

Self fulfilling prophecy?

Old Miss changed their mascot before Trump was even elected. The fact that some are protesting would have happened regardless of who is POTUS.

Based on the assumption that this is about Trump, then it could be argued that the players knelt, not to protest the protesters, but to protest Trump. Yet, none of the players or coaches said that. So, why would someone say that here? (unless it's false and done so to further an agenda)

Trump didn't cause anything. This country has had problems for quite some time. Blaming Trump for everything assumes that once he is gone, all these problems will go away. They won't.

Why is kneeling considered disrespectful to the anthem? From everything I’ve seen in all other phases of life kneeling is a sign of respect and adoration. Kneel to propose marriage, kneel during Church for the most important parts, kneeling before a Monarch/Emperor, kneel to beg for forgiveness, kneel to pray, kneel to show that you are giving yourself up in a fight/struggle, etc. Why is this the one case where kneeling is being considered aggressive and disrespectful?

Because you are supposed to stand at attention.

Kneeling therefore is meant to be a respectful protest. (Although many still see it as disrespectful regardless.)

Simplest answer, the announcer says "please rise for our National Anthem". If you choose to kneel or sit, it's seen as doing the opposite of what is asked.

It shouldn't be. Genuflecting is traditionally been considered a sign of respect. And this was suggested to Kaep by an ex-Green Beret.

I often wonder if Kaep had started his anthem protest by kneeling instead of sitting on the bench if there would have been the same degree of controversy, or any controversy at all. I imagine that it probably would have played out the same, since at some point a reporter would have asked him why he was kneeling and he would have given his rationale as to rogue cops and racial injustice.

see the problem with the bolded and underlined? the Confederate flag is a symbol of hate and treason to the US.

So he is being more respectful than people who stand to the flag of the country that is oppressing him?  No one genuflects to the American flag as a sign of respect.   At least be honest with his intentions.
