Somewhat the good guy, we could have done better, but ultimately we were much more benevolent than China or Russia would have been if they were in that spot.

There is one thing that towers above all else that makes America great, and that thing is immigration.  I've got a set of steak knives for whatever comes in 2nd place.

One could write volumes of books on both the sins and the moral triumphs of the United States.

Overall, the US has been a force to bring peace, prosperity and liberty to the world, despite the many ####ups, genocide, and exploitation committed along that path.

Is the US government evil? It certainly can be. Ask the Iranians who suffered under the Shah or the Iraqis that suffered under Saddam. Those were both our guys and they murdered, tortured and disappeared people as they saw fit. Ask the Yemenis what they think as our bombs and our support kill them. And really that just scratching the surface.

Are the American people as a whole evil? No I think they are so busy trying to survive that things happening a world away seem illusory and to far removed from the daily struggle to fixate on.

That's why I voted not evil but absolutely the bad guy.  Although I would change it to "too often the bad guy". We aren't and really never were the John Wayne character in this movie.
I wonder if the Iranians prefer their current rulers over the shah???

I think America is trending up, we are certainly a better global role model now than at any time in history.

America is leading edge when it comes to racism, sexism,  and religious intolerance. If you think it is bad here, just go visit one of the other countries.  Also look at America's past to see how these groups of people were treated. Now is the best time in history to be someone other than a straight, white, male in america.

Overall the amount of atrocities has gone way down, native americans, slavery, japanese internement camps, etc, and we do not colonize other countries like we used to, Philippines, etc.

We also provide tons of aid to many poor people/countries around the world, with a somewhat ridiculous foreign aid budget.

We are not a white knight yet, however from a global perspective America is better now than we have ever been throughout history.
Whatever the opposite of this post is, that’s my opinion. I’ve never been less proud to be an American and I think we are becoming dumber, fatter and less good.

Some dont seem to now but they sure did in 1978. And at least this time its their own fault. We aren't propping them up and helping them form their secret police for torture, rape and murder of the people. That's all them.

Absolutely the good guy. Sometimes the white knight.

We’re about to celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Now, that was done with allies: British, Canadians, free French, etc., but essentially it was us. We saved Western Europe (and the world) from the Nazis. Think about that. Only a few years later we had the Marshall Plan and the Berlin Airlift and we saved Western Europe (and the world) from Stalinist Russia.

The two greatest evils in the history of human civilization and we stopped them. We were the white knight then.
D-Day doesn't happen if the Nazis aren't tied up on the Eastern Front.

Hard to judge here when freedom and democracy are on the decline around the world.  Part of that is because America has turned inward and aligned with the despots and elected despots around the world by electing Trump.  Part of it is because of the expensive wars we unsuccessfully waged to "expand" that freedom and democracy.  Some have been just, some have not.  But the ineffectiveness we have had in making permanent changes to those countries (as, I'd argue, we did in post-war stories like Germany, South Korea, Japan, and others) have made these wars very costly and eroded our ability to defend much recent military intervention.

The United States of 2019 bears zero resemblance to the United states 75 years ago.

I’m not saying the Shah was great but it seems to me you’re saying the Mullas are better.

We have played a big part in keeping Western Europe democratic and have largely fought for democracy (not always successfully).  We also fight for our best interests though.  I wouldn’t have it any other way, but it’s definitely not always altruistic.
