2019-20 NBA Thread: new forum, same great taste (9 Viewers)

An interesting thing to me is how the NBA is dominating sports talk right now. I realize NFL camps haven't opened yet, but usually NFL starts taking over the news cycle mid July. And MLB - they're in midseason and I hardly hear any baseball talk, pretty sad.
It would be a lot sadder if you did hear baseball talk.

It's also interesting that the Knicks never got in the mix for Westbrook. Seems like a thing they'd have done in the recent past. Maybe they're actually figuring things out?
Dont think they're allowed to move their myriad FAs for contract-matching purposes til December, so couldnt have offered til then

Are they full up? For some reason I thought they had a ton of space still, but I haven't been following their moves very closely once they got jilted for the Nets by Durant and Irving. I know they signed Randle, but lost track after that. I suppose I'm giving them undue credit then for showing temperance in the Westbrook sweepstakes.

I think the whole trade for whoever they want is overblown.  For non-top 20 NBA guys sure, but the top guys continue to force their way out of places like OKC not to OKC.  It’s going to be their weird guy that stays out of the major markets.
Sure, but if they hit on an all-NBA guy with a lottery pick in the next 2-3 years they can surround him with everything he needs to succeed.

Consider the guys who turned into elite players while still on their rookie deals lately.  When those teams had the assets and FO skill to surround them with a supporting cast (Milwaukee, Denver and Utah are the obvious examples) they've become contenders.  And OKC will be arguably better positioned than all of them if they do stumble across their own Giannis or Jokic or Gobert/Mitchell.

hell yeah.  they used basically all of their space on the jackpot of:

Reggie Bullock

Bobby Portis

Julius Randle

Marcus Morris

Elfrid Payton (I think?)

and some other crap.

Although at least most of them are only 1 year guaranteed (Randle with 2 years guaranteed)

edit: Taj Gibson and Wayne Ellington being the rest

@Capella hates baseball because he needs action all the time and can't appreciate a slower game which is why he only watches Michael Bay movies and monster truck rallies.
It’s not just the eternal, soul-sucking, mind-numbing, white bread ### boringness of it — although that is certainly a factor. It’s the 10000 games that go on forever and are almost completely meaningless.

Baseball sucks
I kind of agree with you. In particular I think they've gone totally the wrong direction in allowing home runs to become the entirety of the game. They should go the other way, embrace low scoring, with each run being a big deal (like soccer does), which would also result in shorter, more tense games where most things matter, maybe a bit more activity on the base paths. I became a fan of the Herzog Cardinals because they played an exciting kind of baseball to watch as opposed to the Earl Weaver sit around and wait for home run style - which is basically all we have now.  Ricky Henderson on the base baths was must see t.v. Baseball really doesn't have that anymore. Baseball as it stands now is unwatchable.

In the most iconic song about baseball (so iconic that it is sung at nearly every professional game), it's worth noting that peanuts and crackerjack get top billing.

who has more 3's this year, Simmons or Fultz...……..
That is a tough call.  In two years, Simmons is 0/17 and Fultz is 4/15.  My money would be on Fultz, but there is no guarantee that he even plays a game.  Simmons is due to throw in a desperation 3 at some point.

he sinks them a lot pre game. It is the inability to even attempt during live 5-on-5 which is worrisome. he can shoot them though. It does seem that this year he will be trying some, that's what I am looking forward to the most with the first 3-4 games of the season if he makes any attempts.
For some reason, I feel he will end up with a Nick Anderson moment down the road.,..

Dam we all thought the Circus was just gonna be in LAL this year but the Rockets said Hold my beer and watch this. What a ####show Harden/Westbrook will be. Hou got taken to the cleaners. At least if your favorite team sucks there's two teams who will be filled with LOL's. As if I didn't hate HOU already. So happy Billy Donovan is out of that egotistical clown of Russ. Hopefully if OKC ends up keeping CP3 Donovan can teach the dude some maturity and not being suck a floppy whiny #####.

As for the other news did Harris get a clause in his contract about about only saying nice things about Ben? He hit 3 in a row? Most guys hit 3 in a row against you dude. You aren't really well known for your defense and all you are doing is repeating what we've all already heard about Ben. "well he makes them in practice and does really well." no #### we've all seen the videos. Thank You Captain Obvious.....

As for Ennis comments: Not sure I'd want my bench player who on a better depth team especially GS might only be coming in from time to time as a 3 PT Specialist and some D flapping his gums about walking to the finals. The East has Giannis and Mil still and the team you struggled and barely beat in the Nets just got better. For a guy who doesn't play much not sure I'd want him flapping his gums off. Now he's just putting more pressure on the team as is. First stretch of games they start losing these comments will be thrown in his face. Another 2nd round exit if it happens and those comments won't age well at all. Would be totally different if Joel or another starter was saying this. At least they get enough opportunities to back it up and all. Plus everyone would just say it's Embiid being Embiid. If I'm Brown I'm sitting James down for a chat. Saying I like the confidence but you now just put us in a tougher spot. You don't play enough to be saying these things. Plus someone should show him the video of the Mets saying this in 07. Up 7 with 14 games left and one of the biggest choke jobs of my lifetime up until that point until SEA decided not to give it to Lynch at the Goal line in the SB.

Thunder posted Westbrook video.  I'm a nuggets fan living in Oklahoma, but his love, dedication, and passion to this city will be truly missed.  OKC obviously isn't sexy like other cities, and he could have left, but he didn't and will forever hold a golden key to OKC.

My oldest is a die-hard fan and cried when he learned he was going to be leaving.  His pregame warmup with the crowd was always awesome and something that my kids will remember.

The Brooklyn Nets have signed David Nwaba to a two-year contract, league sources told Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Nwaba averaged 6.5 points in 51 games for the Cavs last season.

I really liked Nwaba the one year he was on the Bulls and wished they'd have re-signed him.  I know he was hurt a lot last year.  It's nice to see him on a playoff team.  He's a poor shooter but he's a nice hustle, good defensive guy to have come off the bench when needed.  He'll know his role.  Good signing by the Nets.

i feel like i have heard this before, but maybe this is the year?

OrlandoMagicPC] Caron Butler says Markelle Fultz is “completely healthy” and has been “working his tail off all summer.” Caron believes Fultz will be the starter, that he’ll be a “huge addition” and will make the Magic a team to be “reckoned with.”    https://twitter.com/orlandomagicpc/status/1150254442870136832?s=21

no idea where butler is getting this from.  Clifford and Hammond both recently said that they have no idea what is going to happen.

Hammond from last week:

“It’s just a matter of him just continuing to get more comfortable, continuing for him to get himself in a position where he’s ready to step on the floor and help us,” Hammond said of Fultz. “And look, we have no idea when that’s going to be. We’re hoping much, much sooner than later. But once again, we’re trying to do this the best we can.”

I don’t believe Butler that much but no way would the Magic come out with a ton of praise and continue to add pressure. Keep expectations low.

of course, but their quotes go a step beyond that, I think.  regardless, as someone who has fully lived through this whole thing, it is really off the charts on the bizarro scale and I don't think that there is any way for anyone to calibrate anything or believe anything until we actually see him play in a real game.

Regardless, the Magic traded basically 0 for him now that the OKC first likely will convert to future second rounders and Jonathan Simmons was one of the worst players in the league last year.

yeah, but the Sixers also cleared $10 million in cap for this year and $12.5 for next year (assuming option picked up).  That was key in their acquisitions this year.  Those 2 "assets" they got  didn't work out, but they weren't terrible ideas at the time.

And I'm not arguing that the Magic shouldn't have done it or that they will look stupid if he never plays, just talking about who Fultz is and what he can be.
