I think that if I were Donald Trump, I could turn this around even at this late date. Here’s what I would do: 

1. I would make a national speech. Without actually apologizing, I would state that all of my moves in the last several months were based on the emphasis of getting the economy going because if it doesn’t, it could do as much damage as the virus. But I never intended for the virus to rise as a result. 
2. I would call on the entire nation to be careful in reopening. I would urge social distancing. I would say that it was a mistake not to wear a mask and admit that even I make mistakes. And then, on camera, I would put a mask on and call on all Governors to make it mandatory. 
3. I would declare that the federal government is taking over distribution of all tests and PPE; I would explain that this is so the states don’t have to compete with each other. 4. I would explain that while all of my criticisms against Obamacare remain intact, getting rid of it in the middle of a pandemic is too disruptive. I would drop the lawsuit and hint that it might be resumed once the current emergency has been resolved. 
5. I would declare myself open to all issues of police reform and criminal reform, without weakening law and order. I would admit that systemic racism does exist but there are ways to solve it without getting rid of the police: for instance, a national database of the bad police, and making chokeholds illegal. 
6. I would explain that the main reason we can’t elect Biden is because an economic recovery is impossible if taxes are raised. This would be my main focus until November: Biden will raise your taxes. I would drop all other issues. 
7. Finally, I would announce that I am going to all of the banks in this country and calling on them to have a 60 day holiday just as FDR did, with no rents or mortgages due. All landlords would then be required to do the same. This is the best way to have as quick a recovery as possible

Would all of this get Trump re-elected? Who knows? But I believe it would make it a race again.

I have to admit, this is a good ad by Trump. This is the fear porn that the Trump supporters I know in real life would eat right up.

The question is, will it be effective enough to persuade independents and Republicans who are on the fence about voting for Trump?

I think it might be his best strategy at this point. Trump here is saying the Democrats will destroy and burn down our country if they’re elected and I’m the only other option so vote for me. It’s very similar to what Biden is doing by essentially just saying I’m not an out of control divisive monster like Trump so vote for me.

The funniest part is that he realizes the threat. This isn’t Joe Biden’s Democrat Party anymore, heck it’s not even Hunter Biden’s Democrat Party. This party has been hijacked by left wing extremists and “the moderate” democrats don’t say a peep. They just pander harder. Kente cloth anyone?

Don’t get me wrong. Even if I thought Biden WAS AOC I would still vote for him. That’s how low an opinion I have of the current occupant. 

It is not, however, my opinion of the Republican Party. There are many good people who are still a part of that party, with many good ideas. It’s been hijacked by the far right and by the nativists, and by the Trumpers. Put up some centrists and moderates again and I might switch sides again, especially if we, the centrists currently in the Democratic Party, lose our current struggle. But I’m not convinced we’re going to lose. We just had a primary contest and the leftists were soundly defeated. They were repudiated, trounced. Even beyond Biden, Klobuchar and Buttigieg performed very well. Bernie and Warren did not. Bernie in particular was strongly endorsed by AOC and the rest of the progressives and they heavily campaigned for him and he got nowhere. 

So when you guys just automatically assume that Biden is going to get shoved around by the lefties, guess again. It will be a struggle, no doubt. But I have every reason to be confident my side will succeed. And you guys should jump on the bandwagon.

Nothing like downing a couple cans of 2016 Confidence™ in 2020 to get things rolling!

If Trump wins, have no fear that I’ll be running away. I will be here first thing to eat as much crow as you guys want to serve me. 
 

If Biden wins, I won’t be rubbing anything in either. I take no pleasure out of it. I’ll extend my hand in friendship and the hope that we can all move on (will do this either way.)

Posted quotes from 40 years ago? That’s the road you want to go down? I don’t think that ends well for Trump in claiming he’s the less extreme candidate. 

I just ask you to take look at what they are saying today. 

Trump’s only way to win at this point is to ensure that he milks every last vote out of an extreme, out of touch base. Maybe he’s not that far out there but that’s who he needs to win.

He’s lost too much of the centrist vote to Biden.

This isn’t 2016.  Trump could say anything then and not get called out for it because he had no record to defend.

He now has a record and it is atrocious.  

Toast.
