This is not how I judge good acting.  Choosing a challenging role is for the actor and not for the audience.

I’m not saying anything about good or bad acting just the ease of playing a role.

How do you distinguish the real person from their public persona or their past roles?

I usually don't think that much about it personally. All I am saying is that Eminem playing a rapper or Harold Russell playing an amputee and war veteran is one thing but they probably couldn't pull off swapping roles.

You would think Batman’s Joker could be played by many people.  Why do you think Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto and Joaquin Phoenix were attracted by this character?

It has been played by many people. I am sure there's lots of reasons they chose those roles and why the producers wanted them for the roles. They are all also excellent actors so they all did generally good jobs. I liked Mark Hamill in the cartoon show. Not really sure what you are getting at as it relates to the conversation of non-actors having great success in limited roles.

He actually can act and do it well.

Check out "Punch Drunk Love".

That movie was so bad, I didn't even watch it long enough to evaluate his performance.

One scene was:

"F You"

"No F You!"

"No F You!!"

"No F You!!!"

"No F You!!!!"

What garbage.

Mark Hamill can explain that you do not need actual experience as a Jedi to play a Jedi.

I think you and I are engaging in 2 different conversations

Some NSFW language

That does look cool as heck. And the best part is I still don't really know exactly what it's about. That's a great trailer.

It's a messy movie by design, but overall it's good. People are constantly talking over each other, a good minute of the movie is devoted strictly to getting a janky security door to work, there isn't a lot of exposition about the gambling that occurs (it's also completely unrealistic, you can't bet giant amounts of money on player props, much less in a correlated parlay, but nonetheless), you're kind of tossed into this dude's world and follow him around. I'd recommend it, but it is uncomfortable.

And yes, she's gotten naked before you perverts. Julia Fox.

I saw it tonight, and agree with all your points. The movie moves really fast. The scenes don't blend into each other but rather seem spliced together.

Sandler was excellent, he carried the entire movie.

It is difficult to give any kind of thorough review without giving away spoilers, but there did seem to be some questions of logic, and math that didn't quite add up.

The theater was packed for an afternoon showing.

Saw it at a packed theater and with a group of 7 others. The opinions around the theater were all over the place. The two older women in front of me said "2 THUMBS DOWN" really loudly at the end, but also there was a smattering of applause. The younger guys next to me were applauding a lot through the movie. My friends really liked it and thought it should get a best pic nom, another said it was with Rounders and The Sting as the best gambling films ever. For me, it was super fun but reminded me a lot of Knives Out. I enjoyed watching it but don't think I will want to see it again any time soon.

So I don't even know how I can or can't recommend this. It's intense and it all rests on Sandler.

The super old couple next to me left after the text conversation regarding the degree of wetness. I laughed out loud when they got up.

Those poor people probably thought they were going to see a Sandler movie where he does belly flops into a lake.

The row in front of me was crazy: all black but ages ranging 12-80. It was a bunch of youngish guys and right as the movie started, about 6 older black women came into their row. I have no clue what they expected, but they hated it. I feel like there is a real age and maybe gender divide on this thing.

I felt like that scene wasn't completely gratuitous, it established that a) she was actually into him via putting her hand down her underwear (Joe don't ban me) and b) that he's a ####### maniac. Which, you know, was every scene I guess.

I liked the ending, btw. We doing spoilers?

Trailer looks boring. I have an unlimited movie plan for the next year and I don't think it makes the cut. We'll see though. Just got it and so far used it on Joker, Star Wars, and Midway.

I'm glad we didn't go half on that baby.

I loved that they both had smith and Wollensky bags too. That cracked me up for some reason.

Ending was awesome.

It’s anything but boring. There are lots of reasons people might not like it but boring ain’t it.

It has a super low audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. I think a lot of people went for the holidays with no clue what this was. It made a ton of money but Sandler has likely lost many fans on this.

I think because it’s relentlessly stressful. It jacks up the tension early and never lets go.

I reckon a lot of people don’t like that feeling.

Here are some of the wonderfully negative reviews

Adam Sandler is a great actor. He does better in comedy. Movie/story was dark, depressing and had zero entertainment value! Waste of time and money

Just awful. Nothing but F-bombs and bad acting and a horrible plot.

I didn't like I couldn't keep up the story line.

The top complaints seem to be that it has no plot, too much yelling and the top complaint by far is too much swearing.

I saw the film today and agree with the majority of those comments from the reviews.  Keeping up with the storyline wasn't hard, but the plot itself was kinda lame and the film was non-stop cursing and yelling; think of the 15-minute sequence near the end of Casino where Sharon Stone was screaming her head off and then imagine that for 2+ hours without a lot of breaks.  Sandler's performance was good, but his character was really annoying (which I get was the point) and wasn't likable at all; there was not a single time in the movie where I felt sorry for any of the bad situations in which he found himself.  The movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't very good either.  I can't imagine watching it again unless I want to give myself a headache.

More than after the Zohan movie or Jack and Jill?

I think there were a lot of grumbles after Punch Drunk too.

This. To a T. We saw it this past Tuesday, and honestly, the theater was packed 80%. Sandler did do a great job, but all he did was scream, then go to "loving father". Rinse, repeat. I understand the flipping, gambling, jewlery schitck. KG was excellent. Didn't see the ending coming. It did somewhat remind me of those of us in a FF championship, with money on the line. Taunting the antagonists was priceless.

Julia was $. Literally. Wife, sayanora #####.

Good flick. Will most likely buy on Blu Ray.

Oscar nominee, most likely. Win? I don't know.

Good movie.

Found it entertaining, but I don't get the Oscar buzz.  I'm not a movie expert, but how I judge an acting performance is if I can forget who the actor is and just fall into the role.  I never once forgot who Sandler was during the movie.  He even had one of his patented yells at his wife he does all the time which was a smack in the face reminder that it was a dumb comedian doing a serious movie.  That's sounds harsher than I mean, because I did like the performance, I just don't get the accolades for it being award worthy.

I had a funny experience watching it.  Saw it with my wife on a Friday afternoon matinee.  I wasn't sure who would be in the theatre and was surprised it was almost full.  I should have realized it was full of retiree aged people.  The two ladies next to me took five minutes to get to their seats due to their canes, and having to go up stairs.  Made several scenes "uncomfortable" to watch.  The one point where she starts to touch herself?  Some lade a few rows up let out an audible "oh brother" and I think I could hear her eyes roll.

While the trailers didn't really tell you what was coming in this movie, between the vagueness, buzz for Sandler, and Sandler fans being fans of a totally differenet type of movie, I think it gets a bunch of people in the seats that are going to be unhappy with what they see.

Sandler was amazing in this.  Amazing......His push push push throughout the whole movie.  About anything, everything..(wont say anything for fear of spoilers)

He ran the entire gamut of emotions and nailed every single one of them.  Someone commented about how people were always talking over people. YES!! That's exactly the character he was portraying. So focused on his wants and needs that NOTHING else mattered---he just wouldn't listen if he wasn't hearing what he wanted to hear.

I can't speak to whether he should win the nomination cause I haven't seen all the potential contenders.(DiCaprio in once upon a time in Hollywood was great too)

But he should absolutely positively get the nomination.  Sandler was fantastic.   I will watch this again when it comes out at home.

Zero Oscar nominations. Unreal.

Give Rotten Tomatoes audience reviews, I’m not surprised. Older people don’t like the movie. It got shut out of almost all the major awards.

I don’t know how much older than me but I meant OLDER and more conservative. The negative reviews just keep pouring in on RT and it’s all still: it’s not funny, I wanted funny Sandler and why is it so loud and I don’t like all the bad words and I didn’t understand the plot.

To be fair, his movies haven't been funny for a bit, so I am not sure what people are expecting there.  ;)

Seriously though, I if these are the reasons and knocks for this movie, why did something like Joker get so many award nominations over something like Uncut Gems? (keep in mind I still haven't seen UG)

Exactly this. It's tough to appreciate a movie that is designed to make you feel uncomfortable. (The Lighthouse and High Life come to mind).

It's also very difficult to root for a protagonist that is just so damn unlikable.

We as the audience are invested in the successes and failures of the Sandler character whether we liked it or not. Every time it seems like he's going to climb out of this ditch and relieve some of the tension, he doubles down and digs even further. This is understandably very frustrating for a viewer.
