2020/2021 Coaches/GMs on the hot seat - The Coaching Carousel is in full swing!

Recommended Posts

The Bengals really rallied around Zac today.  I do think the temperature is hotter than a lot seem to think as he actually did make moves today that bordered on actual accountability - Jordan and Bullock (!) were inactive.  Bernard essentially benched for the 1st half after he fumbled (for the first time since his rookie year) and benching the left tackle after staging a butt fumble in tribute to Mark Sanchez.

Next up an impending shellacking on national tv at the hands of the hated Steelers.

Even Mike Brown might have had enough after a 30-7 pummeling at the hands of the formerly 3-9 Cowboys.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Broncos plan on keeping Vic Fangio as their head coach for the 2021 season.

Fangio is two seasons into his tenure with the Broncos and has yet to put a winning campaign on the record books. He went 7-9 on the back of a punishing defense last year but currently sits at 5-9 with no playoff hopes to be heard of. Fangio was a successful defensive coordinator for over 20 years before landing this gig but the results simply haven't been there. His defense struggled through injuries this year which may explain the worse record but he needs to figure out a plan to turn the offense around in 2021. Denver is 28th in points per game this season.

Never mind obviously.  Maybe Anamuro remains in trouble but jobs saved by the Steelers and Texans wins for sure.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Eagles coach Doug Pederson is expected to return for 2021.

Four years removed from a 2017 Super Bowl Championship, the Eagles and Pederson have regressed immensely. Philly will head into the 2020 season finale with 4-10-1 record and nothing to play for. Pederson's in-game management and the Eagle's lack of development over the last few seasons has raised red flags. At this point, Pederson must have a quick turnaround in 2021 or else he'll be looking for new work. It's unclear if Carson Wentz or Jalen Hurts will be at the wheel for his must-win season.

I guess 2017 SB gets you a pass on missing the playoffs in the worst division . Keeping Wentz out there for weeks when everyone could see he was hurting the team was inexcusable.

Denver fans want more Fangio and Lock? Vic should probably go back to DC.

Did Herbert buy Lynn more time? His team's late game meltdowns were legendary this season.

How many more losing seasons can Jags fans endure with Marrone? He's overdue.

Zac Taylor has led the Bengals to actually be worse than what Lewis accomplished his last 3 years there.

Gase is just an ongoing meme. It's become too comical now.

Looks like both Eric Bieniemy and Robert Saleh will get their HC chance soon enough.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports Texans interim GM Jack Easterby "isn’t as in control in the Texans’ organization as it might have seemed."

This, of course, would be the type of thing Easterby would leak to the media, but we're taking the report seriously. The Texans have been interviewing GM candidates for the last two weeks, and Garafolo reports the job has become "more attractive to those with no ties to Easterby." A broader general manager search should be considered a win for Deshaun Watson and Texans fans.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Doug Marrone is "likely out" as the Jaguars head coach and that former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer could be the replacement.

Marrone is likely to be a victim on Black Monday after what likely will be a 1-15 season. Despite the record, the Jaguars head coaching job is one of the best available given the Jaguars' massive cap space and first overall pick. Meyer would be an exciting hire for all involved. His offenses at Ohio State were electric, and his coaching connections are as good as anyone's. Rapoport reports Meyer is telling his network of friends and coaches that he "expects to land" in Jacksonville. If Meyer ultimately stays retired, Rapoport reports current Ohio State coach Ryan Day is a "potential target". The debate between Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State's Justin Fields would be turned up if Meyer or Day lands the job.

Am I the only one who thinks it's outrageous Doug Pederson was on the hot seat?

If you desire, you can read the Eagles' thread for a chronicle of the terrible coaching the team had this year.

I understand giving him a pass for this year because of 2017, but Pederson was absolutely awful this year.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the "Lions plan to pursue Seahawks GM John Schneider."

Already a GM of a vastly more successful and talented team than Detroit, Schneider doesn't seem to have any incentive to take the Lions gig at first. However, with the Seahawks, he doesn't have primary authority over personnel decisions. That role still belongs to HC Pete Carroll. More power and a big paycheck could lure Schneider away from the west coast back to his Midwestern roots but this move does seem unlikely. Rapoport noted that Schneider has been in lockstep with Carroll on personnel decisions so the increased role within the organization seems like a minor benefit to take on a far worse roster than he is currently working with. Seattle has an outside chance at the No. 1 seed in the NFC and a top-five QB in Russell Wilson. Internal candidates including personnel director Lance Newmark, VP of Player Personnel Kyle O'Brien, and pro scouting director Rob Lohman, who have all been interviewed for the job by Lions management, seem far more probable to be in the GM chair for Detroit at the start of the 2021 season.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport report the Jets are "expected to part ways" with coach Adam Gase after Week 17.

The Jets would be the laughing stock of all American sports if Gase kept his job even after stacking up two upset wins to close the season. Gase's tenure has led to few wins and many headaches with players. The Jets head coaching job has its pros -- cap space and draft capital -- but the Jets' ownership has a long track record of sloppy decision making. Pelissero and Rapoport report the Jets' head coach search will include NFL coordinators and college head coaches. Jets GM Joe Douglas "isn't going anywhere".

Anthony Lynn is going to be fired after today's game. Can't see he doesn't deserve it.

I'd like to see Zac Taylor fired as well, I'm just not confident he's an NFL HC.

I'm love to see Matt Nagy fired, but that seems unlikely, and the Bears will likely stay in 8-8 purgatory.

Some fits I like, though I have no inside info:

Atlanta: Don Martindale, the offense is in pretty good shape, but the defense is what needs work. Unless they blow it up, but that seems like a mistake to me, as the Falcons weren't a bad team this year, just a bad team in the 4th quarter. This is still a playoff caliber roster.

Chicago: Joe Brady, might be a year early on him, but I think he's a very bright offensive mind.

Cincinnati: Matt Eberflus, he's done a great job in Indy, and had some interviews last year.

Detroit: Robert Saleh, he's a local guy, and is a player's coach which is likely where they head after Patricia.

Houston: Josh McDaniels, I think he's still very highly thought of in the NFL. I have no evidence, but I will always maintain that he quit the Indy job, because he learned Luck wasn't going to be back. No worries about that with Watson.

Jacksonville: Brian Daboll, has done an excellent job with Josh Allen, and should be a HC somewhere. Getting Lawrence is arguably the most appealing job, outside of maybe Houston. The Meyer thing likely has legs, but maybe its as a GM and not a HC?

LA Chargers: Arthur Smith, young up and comer who deserves a lot of credit for turning Ryan Tannehill around, and creating a very effective offense.

NY Jets: Eric Bieniemy, choice of non-Lawrence QBs, and a bunch of extra picks. He's due for a HC job, probably would have got one a year ago, but for whatever reason teams like to fill jobs early, and not have patience for coordinators of Super Bowl teams.

FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports Charger HC Anthony Lynn is expected to be fired after Week 17.

Lynn is 32-31 as the Los Angeles head coach and should be able to pull off his fifth straight win by facing the Kansas City backups this week. However, he had three years with Phillip Rivers and one year with the presumed Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert and made the playoffs just once. Lynn is meeting with Chargers management on Monday and is expected to receive the news then. The Chargers have the talent to be trending in the right direction over th next few years Herbert, Austin Ekeler, and Keenan Allen all under contract for the foreseeable future. They simply need a coach who can avoid the grievous late-game mistakes that Lynn is now known for. His firing isn't a done deal yet but looks more likely than not. Expect the Chargers to start interviewing candidates for Lynn's vacated position within the next month.

Jets fired coach Adam Gase.

And so ends the biggest coaching fiasco in recent memory. The Jets went 9-23 in two years on Gase's watch by the grace of a pointless 6-2 2019 finish after the squad knocked itself out of playoff contention with a 1-7 start. The Jets gained the fewest yards in football each of Gase's years on the job in the Big Apple, becoming a laughingstock of truly epic proportions this season by starting 0-13 only to knock themselves out of contention for Clemson's Trevor Lawrence at No. 1 overall with a 2-1 finish that nobody, least of all Jets fans, wanted. Unable or unwilling to adjust or modernize his offense — the Jets have been where pre-snap motion and play-action go to die — Gase was as out of his depth as a play-caller as he was a locker room leader. As was the case in Miami, Jets players made zero progress under Gase only to improve as soon as they ended up elsewhere.  Although he's only 42, Gase is going to have trouble finding NFL coordinator work after this historically-bad stint.

I don't see how the Jets can or will ever get a half-decent coach now or anytime in the near future. I mean if you're Bienemy do you REALLY want to go coach the Jets and their horrible ownership/front office? I just can't see them attracting the A-list coaches like this. Maybe a guy like a Lane Kiffin, but not Bienemy. just my thoughts.

Gettleman should be escorted out of the bldg immediately, and have him take Danny nickles with him.

Nagy is just as incompetent as Gase, Despite backing in to the playoffs, they're most likely going to fire him after the 1st round game, horrible coach, horrible hire. anyone whose schtick is to wear a golf cap with a bald head in the middle of a cold december and january, in chicago, should be  taken behind the wood shed and pummeled.

Hard to justify keeping A. Lynn around.

Not sold that Josh McDaniels gets a HC job anytime soon, if ever, wouldn't doubt that he's been blacklisted by the owners. Yeah he lied to Indy a few years ago, but don't you think that if he was going to get an offer for a HC position, it would've come in by now? It's been a few years since he left Indy , and no offers have come in.

Even after last night's Philly game, and the self-proclaimed 'I fully expect to be back in 2021' stance he's taking, wouldn't be surprised to see the Eagles show Doug Peterson the door.

Lions have requested interviews with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Saints tight end coach Dan Campbell, and Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith to fill the team's head coaching vacancy.

Bieniemy and Saleh could have their pick of head coaching gigs with multiple teams pursuing the hottest coordinators in the league. Fantasy wise, Bieniemy would be an intriguing hire for players like D'Andre Swift, T.J. Hockensen, and Matthew Stafford and Kenny Golladay, if they return to Detroit in 2021. Whatever happens, the Lions can't do worse than they did last time they had a head coaching vacancy.

The anti Jet bias is strange - I know they have had a bad run with Gase and Bowles but how many teams have been to 2 back to back championship games in the past 11 years.  The owners are not great but the team has shown they can win with them....they simply made bad hires since Rex.  That doesnt mean they cant win or attract talent.  Joe Douglas is a very highly respected executive across the league who will be running the search and team....top market in the country - they have the #2 pick which could give them a big time QB....$100M in cap space and a few solid young pieces....I think its a pretty good spot for a coach.

ESPN has retracted a story erroneously claiming Dolphins OC Chan Gailey had been fired after accidentally citing a fake Adam Schefter Twitter account.

Hey, it happens. Some big 2020 energy to ring in 2021. ESPN has said the error was "in no way Schefter's fault." That much is obvious from anyone who follows Schefter's reporting. 69-year-old (on Tuesday) Gailey did not do an exemplary job replacing Chad O'Shea this season, but his hands were tied by nonstop injuries and personnel changes, including at quarterback. The Dolphins could probably do better, but coach Brian Flores wisely does not want his third coordinator in as many years. Let's all be good to each other online in this new year.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Broncos GM John Elway will take on an elevated role within the organization.

It's a major change within the organization, forcing Elway to hire a general manager after 10 years in that role. Elway himself will stay on as President of Football Operations and work closely with coach Vic Fangio. Although the life-long Broncos exec will still have an input, whomever Elway hires will reportedly have the last word on the draft, free agency and Denver’s roster. This move also ensures Fangio, who will be involved in the process, returns in 2021. Expect Denver's quarterback situation to be one of the first areas addressed in 2021.

Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reports Vikings OC Gary Kubiak plans to retire this offseason.

Kubiak's tenure as Minnesota's offensive play-caller could end only one year after he replaced Kevin Stefanski. It would be the second time Kubiak has walked away from the game, previously retiring one year after winning Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos. Whether the Vikings focus on hiring another run-first coordinator remains to be seen, but 2021 will still be the sixth different OC the Vikings have added in the last five years. Kubiak, 59, also served as the Texans' head coach from 2006 through 2013.

It's another interview for Eberflus, who has also garnered interest for the Texans' and Jets' head coaching vacancies. Indianapolis' revamped secondary tailed off in 2020, ranking 20th in passing yards allowed, but its stacked front-seven finished second-overall in rushing defense on the year. Eberflus' units have also ranked 10th, 18th, and 11th in scoring defense since he joined the Colts in '18. Expect more requests to come his way while the Colts battle in the postseason.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Chargers, Jets, Jaguars, Lions, Falcons, and Texans are expected to interview Titans OC Arthur Smith for their head coaching vacancies.

Those who have only been watching from afar will attribute Smith's success to Derrick Henry when the truth is the latter barely eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark in 2018 before Smith took over play-calling duties the following year, engineering one of the league's most explosive play-action attacks with a rejuvenated Ryan Tannehill under center. Henry of course rushed for 2,027 yards this season, the fifth-most in NFL history, while Tannehill scored 40 all-purpose touchdowns and both A.J. Brown (1,075) and Corey Davis (984) surpassed 950 receiving yards. Smith's tenure as Tennessee's offensive coordinator sounds as if it's coming to an end the moment the Titans wrap up their postseason journey.

The Jets requested to interview Rams DC Brandon Staley and Giants DC Patrick Graham for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Jets are casting a wide net in their search to replace Adam Gase. Staley is expected to be a hot name after the Rams finished No. 4 in team-defense DVOA, checking in at No. 4 against the pass and third against the run. Staley's unit was No. 1 in points allowed, yards allowed, and opponent yards per play. Graham's defense in New York almost singlehandedly helped the Giants to the NFC East title, as the offense was easily one of the worst.
