2024 NFL Coaching Carousel & Front Office Changes (1 Viewer)

Panthers requested an interview with Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly.

Kelly landed an interview in 2019 for the Jets' general manager position. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said the Broncos could also ask Kelly for an interview to fill their newly open GM spot. Kelly served as Denver's assistant director of pro personnel from 2011-2014. He was the Bears' director of pro scouting before becoming the team's director of player personnel, overseeing player evaluations, advanced scouting, free agency, and talent evaluation. He also assists the team's college scouting staff with player evaluations and trades for the NFL draft.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Chargers have requested to interview Bills OC Brian Daboll for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Chargers have requested interviews with Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy, Colts DC Matt Eberflus, Rams DC Brandon Staley, Giants OC Jason Garrett, and Panthers OC Joe Brady over the last 12 hours. They're casting a very wide net in their search to replace Anthony Lynn. Daboll, 45, is part of the Belichick tree but has made a name for himself with his outstanding work with Josh Allen over the last three years, turning him into a legitimate MVP candidate this season. The Bills threw the ball at the highest rate on first down in 2020 and featured plenty of three- and four-wide sets. Daboll would be an exciting hire for Justin Herbert, but we selfishly would like to keep him with Allen in Buffalo.

The Falcons interviewed 49ers DC Robert Saleh for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Jaguars and Lions are also showing interest in 41-year-old Saleh. Even with his defense ravaged by injuries and the loss of DT DeForest Buckner via trade before the season, the Niners still finished fifth overall in team defense DVOA. Saleh brings a ton of energy to the table and might finally land a head-coaching gig after the 49ers made it to the Super Bowl last season.

The Texans interviewed Steelers VP of football and business administration Omar Khan for their general-manager vacancy.

Khan, 43, has been in the Steelers' front office since 2001. He's been in his current role since 2016 and has been a coveted GM candidate for years but has remained in Pittsburgh looking for the right opportunity. Perhaps Khan has been waiting for current Steelers GM Kevin Colbert to retire in hopes of landing that gig. The Texans have also remained linked to Patriots exec Nick Caserio in their search for a new organizational leader.

Jaguars will interview Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy for the team's head coaching position.

Bieniemy could set a record for interview requests this month. The Jaguars have been linked to Urban Meyer over the past few days, raising questions about how serious they are in interviewing other head coaching candidates. Bieniemy, pursued by the Lions, Jets, and Falcons, could have his pick of head coaching jobs in the coming weeks. With the No. 1 pick and $100 million in cap space, the Jaguars are among the most attractive landing spots for a new head coach.

Eagles players were "shocked" and "outraged" by head coach Doug Pederson's decision to bench Jalen Hurts in Week 17 against Washington.

Two defensive players had to be held back from approaching Pederson after the QB change. Hurts was reportedly distraught about the decision to yank him in favor of Nate Sudfeld with the team trialing Washington by three points. The Eagles lost 20-14. Pederson defended the decision to bench Hurts so Sudfeld could get some playing time in a meaningless Week 17 game. He revised his reasoning the following day and rambled about offensive struggled with Hurts under center. Miles Sanders expressed frustration with Pederson's decision in a Tuesday interview. "If I'm being honest, nobody liked the decision. Nobody," he said. Having alienated his players at the tail end of a disastrous season, it's reasonable to question whether the team can bring Pederson back in 2021. Unless, of course, Pederson was told to lose the game. The Eagles have the sixth pick in the 2021 NFL draft; they would've had the ninth pick if they had beaten Washington.

The Broncos have requested permission to interview Bears assistant director of player personnel Champ Kelly for their GM opening.

It's a natural fit, as Kelly spent eight years in the Broncos' front office before heading to Chicago and working alongside current Broncos coach Vic Fangio for four seasons. Kelly will also interview for the Panthers' opening. Kelly interviewed with the Jets in 2019.

Rotoworld take:

Texans hired Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio as their general manager.

NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports the Texans' hiring firm suggested five general manager candidates to ownership and that Caserio was not included. This hiring confirms how much power 2019 interim general manager Jack Easterby has within the organization, as Easterby and Caserio worked together in New England and remain close friends. Caserio has his hands full with the Texans' current cap space and lack of draft picks, but what he does have is a future MVP candidate in Deshaun Watson. Protecting Watson should be Caserio's first order of business. It will be interesting to see who wins the power battle between Easterby and Caserio over the next couple of seasons.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Falcons are interviewing Panthers OC Joe Brady for their head-coaching job on Wednesday.

Brady interviewed with the Texans earlier this week. The Panthers' offense was near the bottom half of the league under Brady, but he's a riser in the coaching ranks for his high-level passing concepts and work with Joe Burrow at LSU. One of the youngest coordinators in the league, 31-year-old Brady also has interest from the Chargers.

The Jets interviewed ex-Bengals coach Marvin Lewis for their head-coaching vacancy.

The Jets join Houston and Detroit. A program builder, Lewis would immediately stabilize the culture in all three battered organizations, but it is justifiably difficult for fans to see beyond his 0-7 record in the postseason. Lewis would settle his defensive side of the ball, but offensive stagnation was a continuous problem in Cincinnati. There is a chance Lewis would end up a great retread hire for any of these clubs, but it would probably be better to give a younger, more unknown talent a chance than recycle Lewis following his marathon tenure in Cincinnati.

Ravens director of football administration Nick Matteo declined an interview for the Panthers' open general manager position.

MMQB's Albert Breer said the Panthers are interested in "cap side guys" to fill their GM spot. Matteo worked for the league office before joining the Ravens' front office two years ago. Carolina interviewed former Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio for the open GM position before Caserio took the Texans' general manager job.

Giants OC Jason Garrett will interview for the Chargers' head-coaching vacancy on Friday.

The Chargers are jumping the line to get ahead of all the other teams banging down the door to make Garrett their next head coach. With that pot shot out of the way, Garrett really would be as uninspired of a hire as possible. He must be a great locker room leader considering how long the Cowboys kept him employed, but he is not a creative offensive mind. Stagnation was the norm with his talented Cowboys squads. The Bolts need to think bigger as they guide one of the most elite young quarterback talents to enter the league in some time, Justin Herbert.

NBC Sports' John Clark reports the Eagles won't retain Senior offensive consultant Marty Mornhinweg.

Mornhinweg, the team's former offensive coordinator who was in his second stint in Philly, will see his tenure end after one season. He joins Senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello, DC Jim Schwartz, wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead, pass game analyst Andrew Breiner and defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel on their ways out the door in a massive overhaul around coach Doug Pederson. With a new scheme (and quarterback) at the helm for 2021, it's truly a wonder how the Eagles' offense will schematically approach the new league year.

NBC Sports' John Clark reports the Eagles won't retain Senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello.

Coach Doug Pederson called his own plays throughout the year but Scangarello was still brought on help "marry" Philadelphia's run game with the team's play under center — an experiment that clearly failed long-term. Marty Mornhinweg is also reportedly following DC Jim Schwartz out the door immediately. The Eagles' overhaul around Pederson also includes wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead, pass game analyst Andrew Breiner and defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel.

The Jets will interview 49ers DC Robert Saleh for its head-coaching vacancy on Friday.

Add New York to the list of teams — Falcons, Jaguars, Lions — interested in Saleh at the head of the table. Fresh off a strong year as San Francisco's defensive coordinator despite having to patch a number of injuries throughout the season, Saleh is clearly a name that's expected to land a head coaching gig early in the offseason cycle. The Jets continue doing its due diligence with both offensive- and defensive-minded personalities.

Eagles fired HC Doug Pederson.

Attached to the hip with former first-round quarterback Carson Wentz, owner Jeffrey Lurie decidedly sided with righting Wentz over keeping Pederson after five seasons and a win in Super Bowl LII. Wentz’s relationship with Pederson was reportedly “fractured beyond repair," leading the 28-year-old backup to demand a trade from the team after he threw a league-high 15 interceptions and took an NFL-high 50 sacks. Pederson's suggestions to "improve the coaching staff" this offseason obviously fell on deaf ears. The organization will instead make a number of changes at the top following a 42-37-1 regular-season tenure (and three playoff appearances) under Pederson. The latter meanwhile has already been linked to the Jets' head coaching vacancy given his public friendship with GM Joe Douglas. The Eagles tried to interview Chiefs QBs coach Mike Groh during last year's coaching cycle and could go back to that well immediately if Andy Reid allows it.

Brian Schottenheimer is not on the hot seat:

Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will be back for the 2021 season.

Cue the collective groan of Seahawks fans everywhere. Seattle's offense started as a pass-heavy, aggressive juggernaut in 2020 only to fizzle out as an offense without a clear identity in the season's second half -- a massive letdown for both fantasy managers and Seattle fans who thought the team had finally handed control of the offense to their all-world QB. The team will be in for at least one more season of managing the tension between Carroll's and Schotty's conservative, establish-the-run ethos and the potential of a passing game highlighted by ultra-efficient Russell Wilson and a dominant DK Metcalf emerging as one of the league's best wideouts. Carroll said Monday that the team's focus in 2021 would be running the ball more.

The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs reports "the rumor flying around the NFL" is that the Bears will retain coach Matt Nagy and GM Ryan Pace.

The report was seconded by NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and further confirms ESPN's Jeremy Fowler's report from December, but the team hasn't made a public announcement. The Bears need to make some type of change because the current formula with Pace, Nagy, and Mitchell Trubisky maxes out as an early playoff loss team. It looks like Trubisky will be the one to take the blame for the Bears' wobbly 2020 season. Expect a formal announcement from the organization soon now that rumors are flying.

Brian Schottenheimer is not on the hot seat:
Scratch that:

Seahawks fired OC Brian Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer and the Seahawks "parted ways" citing "philosophical differences" as the reason why. The Seahawks offense has been good but inconsistent since Schottenheimer was hired in 2018. Critics believed Seattle's balanced approach on offense was to blame, sparking the #LetRussCook movement. Russell Wilson was pacing for an MVP season through the first eight weeks of 2020 while ranking top-five in neutral pass rate, but the offense began running more on early downs and Wilson struggled making easy throws underneath. That set up a total stinker against the Rams' Cover 2 defense in the Wild Card round. Ultimately, the Seahawks ranked 6th, 9th, and 8th in points under Schotty's watch. He'll likely be invited for offensive coordinator interviews immediately.

@flapgreen

GM Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy will be back for the 2021 season:

Bears chairman George McCaskey confirmed GM Ryan Pace and coach Matt Nagy will be back next season.

Both will be returning without extensions. Pace is lame duck status with a deal that runs through 2021, while Nagy is signed through 2022 after agreeing to a five-year deal in 2018. McCaskey singled out quarterback play as an area the team "needs better production from to be successful." Chicago backing into the playoffs bought the Bears' current power structure another year to turn things around. Pace and Nagy will be on the spot again in 2021.

Washington's defense is getting lit up weekly and if that doesn't change Jack del Rio is going to be on the hot seat. The d-line gets little pressure, he keeps the secondary in a soft zone,  opposing QB's tear them up every week and he doesn't change strategy.

Rivera's saying he's satisfied with the defensive schem and is talking about players missing assignments and not being "mature" but the problem is either personnel or coaching. I don't think it's personnel, and I don't expect Rivera to say he chose the wrong players, so that leaves the defensive coaching.  Something has to change or del Rio's going to get pinned with the blame. Just my 2 cents.

Joe Judge is the same guy that said Pat Shurmur is a great coach. I would've fired him on the spot just for saying that.

Nagy is a clown, dude wears golf caps in  -15 degree weather with a bald head. WTF are you doing? you're not Ian Poulter. You're not the Ole Ball Coach.  he'll be fired by week 6 IMO.

Jack Del Rio - LOL. sometimes you wonder why teams keep hiring retreads of retreads of bums. When has JDR ever done anything as a football coach? he's another Rob Ryan type guy. takes about 24 secs for opposing offenses to figure out what his defenses are doing ,and they adjust.

I'm baffled that no one waited for Byron Leftwhich to finish the SB game so that they can interview him for a HC position. that man is super talented as a coach. Even Todd Bowles should've been given a chance to at lest interview.

Judge Judy won't make it out of the 2021 season as the HC of the Giants. he and Gettleman need to go immediately. the entire Giants front office needs to go. the owners need to sell and fans need to stop going to the games at the stadium they didnt need. it kills me as a die hard fan to see the ineptitude. it's a sad story this Giants franchise is nowadays.

If the Bucs offense continues doing well this season and Leftwich isn't sought as a HC then something is wrong in the league.

Titans DC Bowen might need to be concerned. His follow-up year to the 31st D has to be significantly better

I could call plays for a team with future HOFers at WR (x2), TE, and QB. And Godwin has been all-pro, and Fitzmagic played lights out for about 4 games with many of the same players. And the oline is pretty good with Jensen and Wirfs.

How do we know he's not a product of the players or Bruce Arians?

Chris Grier is on the hot seat for bad drafts, especially on offense.  If Miami loses to Jax in London, and ATL in Miami, Flores could be fired. Has a team ever had both the GM and coach fired during the season?

Of course they have. Lions did it last year, for one
