who is/was "that guy" in your town? (1 Viewer)

mr. furley

Footballguy
that guy who, when you say, "i saw (that guy) today" everyone knows exactly who you're talking about.

"that guy" in this town was an older guy that was always spotted standing on a corner near a mini golf course & sporting goods store.  the story i heard growing up was his wife left him at the altar and he never recovered. his life fell apart and he became homeless. he wore the tux from his wedding the rest of his life. any time you saw him, for years, he was wearing that tux. it got worse and worse over the years.

in Milwaukee, it was Pepperoni Canoli.  this old guy that hawked pepperoni's and canoli's from a Coleman cooler all around town... and picked pockets if you weren't looking.

There's a guy that rolls around my hometown on rollerskates.  Everywhere.  He's off his rocker, skates on busy streets, etc.  Shows up in the dive bar I hang at from time to time and they just point to the door.  He's wacko.

He's "that roller skates guy".

I lived in Milwaukee for a couple years in the early 90's.  Never knew the pepperoni cannoli man picked pockets as well.  :sadbanana:

Kent. Was significantly impaired, lived with his elderly parents and  would go for walks  in the neighborhood yelling at every passerby with his signature lines like “hey f—— you you fing #####”

that's when i was there. through the early 2000s.  he stole my female roommate's jacket and her friend's purse. they saw him do it but were too drunk to fight through the crowd and catch him.

that's the direct evidence i know of.  but i heard a number of stories of him getting busted poking in jacket pockets, purses, etc.  never happened to me personally, though.

In the 70s and 80s there was a guy in Dayton, OH that everyone knew as "Aqualung."  Dude looked just like the Jethro Tull cover - clothes and everything.  Even had a large pictorial article in the paper.

He's "that roller skates guy".
Disco Stu?

There's a super famous that guy in Dallas, he runs around on recumbent bike that he paints rainbow color and wears a rainbow wig that attaches to his helmet.

He has a huge following.  I'll find the articles. He does it for no real rason.

These days in downtown New Orleans, I would say that Saint Vader has the highest profile. There are some other "That Guys" that are known around a few office blocks here and there, but Saint Vader has elevated his shtick into local celebrity.

I grew up not far from the king of Prussia mall.  There was a guy we called mall boy that was always there.  Long curly hair, misfits or slayer t-shirt, wallet chain, doc martens, etc.  Every time my mom would drag me to the mall, he’d be there.

2 from the small town I grew up in. The first was Willy. Rode a bike all around town and just mumbled. Story was that his brother shot him when he caught him cheating with his wife. I’m sure he just had a mental disability.

Second was afghan Rose. Old lady walked all over town for no reason. At all times she would be wearing an Afghan rug. Outside temperature didn’t matter. She smelled. Would stop in front of stores/people and make faces or just stare. Both were harmless and no longer living, but everyone knew who they were.

Take your pick...  Dennis Scott, Chris Warren, Mia Hamm, Grant Hill, Sandra Bullock, Warren Beatty.    Dave Grohl too.  But nobody really knew who he was back in 7 - 12th grade

Honestly the answer is probably Chris Warren at least from my generation.  He was a stud at Robinson HS and unlike a lot of these people still hangs out in the NOVA area.  He was born, raised, and still live here.,  3 time NFL pro-bowler.  I haven't seen him in forever, but he's helping coach a HS team in the area.  I feel like the others kind of took off as soon as they could.  Grant Hill would probably be second on the list.

"Preacher Dan", who used to preach on the Quad, warning all the guys to beware of, "those horny, porny women, who are seductive dancers, rock and roll sinners, traveling down... the highway... to... helllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllluh."

In the Champions area of Houston it was Uncle Mike.  He was generally pretty harmless walking the neighborhood all day but would occasionally get randomly angry at cars and pelt them with the biggest snot rockets I've ever seen. He would come into the local MCDonald's every morning early for a small cup of coffee and drink free refills for hours. He'd occasionally mumblesnort but never said too much. He got crazier as the years went by. Last I heard he drew a permaban from McDonald's for waxing the pope in front of the the ballpit and dropping an Uncle Little Mike loogie on the glass door.

When I was a kid in the 70's, there was this guy who rode a motorcycle around wearing an old German helmet, with the spike on top, and when he would ride under the underpass of the freight trains near the park, he would yell "MEATBALL!!!" The whole park could hear it. I heard it probably hundreds of times. People on the facebook neighborhood page still bring him up from time to time.

Then there was Benny the Gluehead. He always had a paper bag with him to sniff glue. At the bowling alley, where we'd play arcade games, he would slip between the games to sniff glue and we'd always yell at him to GTFO. He's still apparently alive, someone posted a video of him about a year ago. He always was a nice guy, despite the glue.

Lived here all my life and never knew of him until you talked about him here. I was never a downtown guy.....

"That guy" to me is the Dancing guy who would always dance at all the festivals.

Edwin passed away about a month ago.  :(   Autistic guy that always walked around town.  If you were local he knew your birthday, phone number, current address, the address of the house you grew up in, names of your kids, your parents and grand parents, and all their info.  He would tell you all of that when you talked to him.

My mom was always very nice to him.  He always called her on her birthday, holidays, and wedding anniversary.  Almost always at the exact same time of day.  When the phone would ring on holidays or her birthday, mom would say, "Oh, I bet that's Edwin." and was usually right.  She will miss him.  :(

I knew of Pepperoni Canoli but I think he ranks behind both of these two...

MILVERINE

FREEWAY

PEPPERONI CANNOLI

All 3 should probably be in some sort of Milwaukee tourism ad. Seriously, wtf Milwaukee?

I used to see this guy walking all over the municipality, up until he got arrested for killing his grandmother adoptive mother with a hammer.

For the Austinites, Leslie Cochran.

We had the Parks twins, I think Eric was the crazier one but they were both off kilter. Phil would show up at school (high school) and poor gallons of milk and other stuff on himself and then do the work across a concrete stage. He also did this at random bus stops around the town. Or maybe that was Eric but either way below is Phil when he landed on Jimmy kimmel

Town I grew up in outside of Cleveland - “Bicycle Bob”. Local legend. Rides his bike everywhere. Probably 10-12 years older than me. He had Mental/Drug issues. I met him when I was in little league back in the early 80’s through mutual family friends. 25 years later I’m back home visiting my parents, haven’t seen “BB” in 20+ years. He comes riding his bike by my parents house and says, “Hey Beef, how you been?” I was shocked he remembered me! He then asked if he could use my parents bathroom and have a drink of water.

I grew up in a decent sized suburb of Dayton, OH with about 35-40K people, had a couple of high schools ...but still pretty small town overall.  This got me thinking about a guy that was somewhere around late teens - early 20s that rode around town on his ladies Schwinn bike.  He always wore a beat up plaid sportscoat, old dress slacks and old wingtips.  He insisted on being called "Mannix" and would gladly tell you about the various cases he was working and what Peggy back at the office was up to.

He even had his hair in the "Mannix" cut with the little piece of bang hanging down.  Sunglasses were also ever present.

No idea what ever happened to that guy.

Lol I got the same exact thing except dude rides a bike. Dude's got a little traffic/ construction vest so people see him. This bike has got tons of added on compartments and a big orange flag at the back. He goes around every day to the public facilities around town (parks, courts, etc) and collects all the recycling from the trash at these places. Been doing it for 20+ years.
