As most of you know, Elizabeth Warren asked the following question at the impeachment trial:
I think the answer is yes. But I think it's an extremely complicated and interesting question. The key part to me is what exactly "legitimacy" means here.
My hope for this thread is not to debate the impeachment, Trump, Democratic candidates or the appropriateness of the question. I just want to focus on the question itself. I suspect most Trump supporters will think it's a laughable question. Liberals? I'm not sure but my guess is many will think the answer is no.At a time when large majorities of Americans have lost faith in government, does the fact that the chief justice is presiding over an impeachment trial in which Republican senators have thus far refused to allow witnesses or evidence contribute to the loss of legitimacy of the chief justice, the Supreme Court, and the Constitution?
