2024 Miami Dolphins: The offseason begins. (4 Viewers)

All hell breaking loose at the 3 spot with the San Fran/GB Rodgers trade news, or at least SF tried to go get him.

That must mean San Fran not feeling great about the other rookie QBs IMHO, huge haul for Miami who in the end gain a 1st and likely still can draft a skill position player high and get away with it, almost like a free pick vs what the Niners invested to this point.

I mean its possible(almost a lock) that no QB in this draft is ever as good as Rodgers is right now, and SF fancies themselves a Super Bowl team right now.

With all the picks they have, how would you feel if Miami dealt for Rodgers? And, what if they then flipped Tua for another 1st.

Rodgers would cry I would think if he were traded to Miami but renting a Florida team for a couple year has become the new "In Thing" with Brady coming down here. 🤷‍♂️

Tankathon just posted a change for Miami, it's based on some algorithm and quality of player and I think media reports.

They have Sewell, Phillips, Elijah Moore, Creed Humphrey, and Michael Carter. Excellent if it happens, but lucky if 2 of those are correct.

LT-Edge-WR is pretty close to what a few of us are talking about. I am not a big Creed fan but I'm not going to quibble and we still might go Meinerz if he is on the board. I like RB in the 3rd if we can wait but will understand if they pull the trigger in the 2nd.

That top 3 is pretty dreamy, little worried about Phillips retiring but maybe UCLA in general just wasn't working out for him.

Worst selection Miami could make, could have at least gotten Sewell or Smith who had an ungodly year last season, you take a guy that had 500-600 yds last year, 5 TDs vs what 23 Smith racked? How could they overlook those Playoff games?

Add this to the pile we took in the 1st round last year. Thoroughly not impressed and Waddle was even projected by some to fall to 12 with Philly.

The move back up with Philly now makes very little sense and we have left our 1st round pick in a very precarious spot with Philly next year. I don't see where Waddle equals wins for the Phins.

Waddle wasn't healthy. I think he's a terrific player... I would have taken Smith but I think both will succeed.

Best slot WR in the draft. Averaged 40+ yards on his TDs. If he hadn't gotten hurt, Smith wouldn't have had Heisman stats. He does look like Cheetah on video. He can do end arounds and punt returns.  If we had stayed at 12, they weren't sure 166 pound Smith would be there.

I share your concern about giving up our 2022 first for the SF 2022 first.

No way! He's very very good and Miami now has a solid WR corps IMO.
Waddle caught 33 balls in 2019 and 28 in 2020...how many real hits has this guy actually experienced? And he is injury prone to boot?

I'm so disappointed in the Miami Dolphins this evening.

And the Patriots select the next QB to rip the Dolphins heart out as they sit back at 15 and just let Jones fall into their lap.

We have 2 QBs from the same college in the same Division in the AFC East, one of them is not gonna make it.

Odds are likely better neither makes it. Not impressed with Jones, glad they didn’t get Fields.

Analysts, evaluators rave about Miami Dolphins’ selection of Jaylen Waddle

Cheetah Jr?

>>ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.: “Twenty four yard average as a punt returner in 2019. He’s coast to coast as a punt returner. He’s coast to coast catching touchdown receptions. Spectacular player. You think about this past year, w hat he was able to do before he fractured that ankle Oct. 24 against Tennessee.

“He had 120 or more receiving yards each of those first four games and in each of those games, he had a reception of 45 or more yards as well as six touchdown catches. Then came the injury Oct. 24.

NFL Net’s Daniel Jeremiah: “Building a little bit of a track team in Miami. When you bring over Will Fuller in free agency and add the most explosive and fastest receiver in this year’s draft, that’s not my opinion, that’s what the GPS numbers tell them.

“Waddle gives you a little bit more juice, but DeVonta Smith plays plenty fast, as well. I just thought what you get after the catch with some of the shiftiness and then just the home run speed with Waddle is why I ended up with Waddle over Smith.

“Waddle had the fastest GPS of any receiver in the country. Your eyes aren’t deceiving you when you watch him. He’s freaky fast. I had my comparison to Santana Moss; that’s who he reminds me of not only as a receiver but a phenomenal returner.”

▪ Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy: “What separates Jaylen Waddle from a bunch of other good slot-type receivers in this year’s draft is he’s not just quick — he’s quick and fast. You go back to last year’s draft — his own teammate, Henry Ruggs, was the fastest receiver in last year’s draft.

“There’s a video circulating on social media right now with these guys in a photo finish in a 40-yard-dash footrace and I’ve been on the field and I’ve timed Henry Ruggs in the 4-2 (range).

ESPN’s Louis Riddick: “You don’t have to put him at the X or Z. You can give it to him real quick, just like Kansas City gives it to Tyreek Hill. It doesn’t always have to be a bomb.

“He’s an angle destroyer. He’s going to absolutely run away from everyone else and no one can catch him. The ability to stretch the field. You can’t match up with him especially if you’re an inside coverage player and in particular if you’re a safety. You can outrun defenders; this is what this guy can do.

“He can run those short crossers and take off and go. That’s what Tua needs - someone I can get the ball out of my hand quick, make a couple easy completions and all of a sudden, I’m rolling. That’s what Jaylen can do in addition to the big plays down the field.”

▪ NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein: “Thrilling, game-breaking talent who will come into the league as one of the fastest receivers to ever play the game. His whereabouts pre-snap and post-snap must be accounted for at all times. Despite his size, he’s a legitimate outside option, thanks to his ability to not only take the top off the defense, but also go up and win 50-50 throws.

“Waddle’s adept at working all three levels, so it will be tough for defenses to predict how offenses will utilize him, as he has the potential to post a higher catch volume in the right offense. Waddle can instantly upgrade a team’s scoring potential, whether it’s with the deep ball, the catch-and-run or as a return man.”

▪ ESPN’s Booger McFarland: “This is good for Miami. This is how you team build. When they traded down from three, you know they were going all in with Tua. He’s the most explosive player.”

▪ Tidbits on Waddle: He has a perfect 158.3 passer rating when targeted in the slot since 2019… His 17 touchdowns in college averaged 44.5 yards… Waddle averaged 9.8 yards after the catch in his career at Alabama, highest among all Power 5 receivers with at least 100 catches since 2014. The Dolphins were 30th in YAC last season.

▪ NFL Net’s and CBS’ Charles Davis: “It’s a great complement to what they already have, when you think about DeVante Parker, Preston Williams, Mike Gesicki, now you got that guy that can really explode.”

NFL Net’s Bucky Brooks, a former scout, said “Waddle has a higher ceiling than DeVonta Smith. He’s the more explosive, more dynamic playmaker. He’s the best catch-and-run specialist in the class. He has a knack for turning short passes into long gains with his electric running skills and cat-like stop-start quickness.”

▪ Stanford coach David Shaw: “Receivers have got three jobs: No. 1 change field position, No. 2 score points and No. 3 get people out of their seats. This guy is going to do all three. And he’s going to do them very, very quickly.”

▪ ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit: “The real question is if he doesn’t go down with that injury, does he win the Heisman instead of DeVonta Smith? Prior to that injury, we were all watching [Waddle] and he was the guys defenses tried to account for. Lightning quick, game changing Tyreek Hill quickness in space. I think he has more versatility than Tyreek Hill.

“He’s probably a slot in the NFL. His route-running, you can move him around. He’s not just going to be in one spot in one role. He has the ability to go downfield, not just quickness underneath and yards after the catch, which he was known for early in his career.”

▪A shout-out to Paramount Sports’ Lee Sterling for calling me this afternoon and making the case that Waddle was the perfect fit for the Dolphins as a slot receiver that can take the top off the defense and also a great punt returner. As we reported here back in February, the Dolphins wanted to add a dynamic slot receiver this offseason.

Miami goes high risk with Jalen Phillips but they go for a big Edge rusher.

Concussions in his medical chart are a serious concern.

As a Miami Hurricane I want him to succeed but I would have preferred Paye.

I like Waddle, but not over Sewell. I would have much rather drafted Sewell and drafted the best WR at 18 (or trade up for Waddle if they like him that much). I don’t buy that they had Waddle ranked ahead of Chase, insanity. I think they got cute with trading and got burned. They desperately wanted Pitts or Chase to be there at 6 IMO.

Yeah. Underwhelming.

I'm sorry you didn't get the trade down you were really wanting... quite possible there was no one looking to move up to that spot based on how the draft fell.

I think you're underestimating Waddle a bit.  If he played the year, I bet his numbers are better than Smith's.  I'm sure they asked Tua which he liked better too, and I'm sure he told them Waddle.

This is not intended to be a hot take - I'm not sure there's a big difference between Chase and Waddle.

I think Sewell would have been a very smart pick for the Bengals or Dolphins.  I also understand going with the electric receiver.

If they wanted to be locked into Chase or Pitts, why trade out of 3?

But what MitB is saying is that Miami could have gotten an OL that would have solved a lot of problems at Tackle. Either Jackson or Hunt, both drafted in the 1st and 2nd round last year, we started 3 Rookies on the OL, but Sewell would have kicked either Jackson or Hunt inside to where Flowers was traded and we would have had 3-4 good up n coming OL that would have made things easier.

There are still WRs right now that are going to be drafted and do very well. Many 2nd Round WRs stick or make it in the NFL, maybe not all of them become All Pro types but many make very serviceable receivers. Parker was taken at 1.14 or 1.16 and he has been very touch n go whether he has panned out or not. Many would say he has underperformed.

Miami has a lot of holes, a lot more than some of you seem to realize. As Miami looks at the moment, they would be lucky to be a .500 team in 2021.

I follow the OL logic. I just think Waddle is an alpha. He's a different type of alpha than Chase, but he still is one. You guys didn't have one before and now you do. Like the Bengals, I think you'll address the iOL today. If you don't then get those pitch forks in-hand.

I think it all looks a lot better if Miami can still grab an OL in the second round. I think a trade down from the first pick is likely. I have DT and RB as the biggest needs after that.

I think last night showed us that Miami does rate Hunt/Jackson more highly than most.

Alot depends on Tua and the young linemen improving, and Flores being able to pressure QBs again with scheme. Tua has a top 10 receiving group, we should know by October if he's the answer. The AFC east got much better with the new coach and QB in NY, and a new QB and players returning in NE. I'll take the under on 9.5 wins in the 17 game 2021 season.

If they get the safety Moehring and an IOL and Michael Carter later today, I'll be happy.

Oh don’t get me wrong, I like Waddle’s upside a lot. Glad they took him instead of Smith. All I’m saying is that if the Bengals took Sewell, we run to the podium to get Chase. We’ll probably never know though.
