The whole point of this exercise is to get ahead of the thing. China started late. We started late. Trump's speech (such as it was) was 2 weeks late. Now we wait another week.

 
So wait is Tom Cotton telling us to prepare for our invasion to "hold those accountable".   Are we going to war with China?  are we going to a war with a virus?

 
The difference in approach to coronavirus between Italy and South Korea

Italy started out testing widely, then narrowed the focus so that now, the authorities don’t have to process hundreds of thousands of tests. But there’s a trade-off: They can’t see what’s coming and are trying to curb the movements of the country’s entire population of 60 million people to contain the disease. Even Pope Francis, who has a cold and delivered his Sunday blessing over the internet from inside the Vatican, said he felt “caged in the library.”

Thousands of miles away in South Korea, authorities have a different response to a similar-sized outbreak. They are testing hundreds of thousands of people for infections and tracking potential carriers like detectives, using cell phone and satellite technology.

Both countries saw their first cases of the disease called COVID-19 in late January. South Korea has since reported 67 deaths out of nearly 8,000 confirmed cases, after testing more than 222,000 people. In contrast, Italy has had 827 deaths and identified more than 12,000 cases after carrying out more than 73,000 tests on an unspecified number of people.

Epidemiologists say it is not possible to compare the numbers directly. But some say the dramatically different outcomes point to an important insight: Aggressive and sustained testing is a powerful tool for fighting the virus.

This is one of the many reasons the payroll tax suggestion is pretty stupid.  Funds would be much better utilized if they did it through direct compensation to help with child care, testing, treatment etc.

Yeah. If your sick and not working not much help. If you are healthy and working why shouldn't you pay your taxes. 

 
At this point there’s practically a 100% chance someone in either Legislative or Executive branch testing positive within the week, right?  Way too many “these people have just tested positive and here’s a pic of them with US official X” for it not to happen.  I suppose that’ll be when the time to act occurs

Italian medical chief dies from coronavirus

Italy’s medical community is mourning the death of the head of the medical association in the northern Italian region of Varese, Italy’s state-run ANSA reported Wednesday.

Roberto Stella, president of the Medical Guild of Varese, died Tuesday night in Como, where the 67-year-old was hospitalized for respiratory failure due to coronavirus, the agency reported.

In a statement, Italy’s National Federation of Doctors and General Practitioners mourned Stella’s death, highlighting his contributions on a national level. They added that they hope the government will take notice of the dangers Italian doctors and nurses are facing.

“He was the example of the capability and hard work of family doctors,” said Silvestro Scotti, national secretary of the federation, said in a statement released Wednesday.

“His death represents the outcry of all colleagues who still today are not equipped with the proper individual protection needed."

Stella was a well-respected general practitioner both at the local and national level.

Not to go too far off on a tangent here, but here is a perfect example of why the outdated ways of government in the US will die off.

While the Left and Right bicker over things like this and take 11 day breaks in the middle of a pandemic, guys like Musk, Branson, Bezos, Buffett....all have enough money and resources to offer solutions and not have to go through all of the formal BS.  Hell, those guys probably have more money and the ability to hire better resources than the government right now. 

These are the people that Millenials and my young children are going to look to for solutions.

People are NOT being tested upon their return to the US. Some are being SCREENED at airports - observed quickly for any obvious symptoms, having temperatures checked, filling out forms - not having a coronavirus test.

Trump says the "really important" thing to know on coronavirus is "it goes away, it's going away." He adds: "People have, you know, we call it cases -- how many cases do you have? Well relative to other countries we have very few cases." America lags in testing capacity.

"...we call it cases..." Ladies and gentlemen, your President of the United States. Its nice that we have such few cases though. Who needs testing when there are so few cases.

I think we are going to war with bats.  The evil-doers in Batmanistan will discover the shock and awe of America's military might.  Our stealth bombers will overcome their echolocation technology and rain down fire on the caves in which they dwell.  Invest in guano futures now.

Is there anything stopping someone like Bloomberg to buy the WHO test and administrate them while the US government waits for more of "their" kits?  Could show he cares about the people that want to get tested, getting the kits to those that want/need them.  Or some entrepreneur, buying the kits (not sure how much they cost) and then selling the test to those that want it?

Hope this is true. Was just thinking "how could McConnell,  a born political animal,  be dumb enough to let this happen?" He sees the writing on the wall. If this continues,  November will be nuclear for the Republican party.

You don't cancel a recess in the middle of a Pandemic to focus on something besides the Pandemic.  

They'll either get on board with the house bill or offer up alterations.

Love him or hate him, I think Mitch is one of the smartest out there when it comes to playing politics and understanding the ramifications.  

I'm not here to tell you a good person.  But I think he's too smart to mess this up.
