SUPER ELITE UPPER TIER
Weird time frame, I know.  Let me explain.

My daughter and I are like the same person, but in different bodies.  She has the same type of sense of humor and she especially has the same stubbornness as me.  If I tell her to watch a TV show or a movie, she'll say it looks dumb.  Now, if a celebrity mentions that same movie or show, she'll binge the entire thing in a weekend.  And I get that.  I was the same way with my dad.  But I told her I was going to put a list together and when she gets into her 20's or when I die, she can have this list to look back on and watch the movies I've suggested.  Kind of like a way for her to remember me by.  And a cool way to make her feel bad from beyond the grave, if I do end up dying.

So I have a list of about 25 movies.  And they are my favorites.  And I think I got most of them.  But every so often I'll see a movie and I'll think, "Holy crap.  How did I forget about that one?'  Now, I don't want to just name every cool movie during that timeframe.  These are my favorites.  So I'm trying to keep my list kind of tight.

But I thought if everyone threw out a couple of the movies they considered their faves from the era, it might help me with my list.

You can list whatever, because it's not like I'm taking every suggestion on here, but my criteria has been:

1) Is it one of my favorites?
2) Does it stand the test of time?

Because there were a couple that I loved, and rewatched recently and thought, "God.  That is terrible."  Not because my tastes have changed, but because in order to understand things you need a knowledge of that era.

So have at it.  Let's hear some of your favorites.

I’ll do a niche list re: submarines in the hopes that your daughter is cool with submarines:

- Hunt for Red October

- Crimson Tide

If by chance your daughter isn’t into submarines I’ll generate a different niche list....maybe with motorcycles, orangutans, surfing or something thereabouts.

If you're looking for suggestions of some you might have missed it might be a good idea to list your current 25 movies so the suggestions are more useful and it also gives us an idea of the type of movies that fit your style.

No.  I'm actually asking what everyone's own personal favorites are.  I'm guessing there's a lot of overlap.  I thought it would be interesting to hear everyone's top 3 or 5 favorites from this time frame.

I just thought as I read through everyone else's, it might remind me of ones I missed.

My older boys are now 17/15 and after my divorce in '07, Friday nights were "MAN NIGHT" which meant pizza and rental movies from Blockbuster.  These were the halcyon days for me, before streaming services and back when my sons liked spending time with me.  I genuinely miss the time spent shopping for movies at Blockbuster on Friday night.  I digress....

Generally, I would let them pick something out and I'd find something from my childhood that I thought they might enjoy.  Movies I'd consider classics that I felt would stand the test of time.  Some of the winners, based on their reactions:

Spaceballs - Still funny after all these years.  Even my oldest (who thought Star Wars was stupid) loved it.
Ghostbusters
Back to the Future
Rocky I,II,III,IV
Star Wars, Empire, Jedi (I refused to show them the crap that came out in 2000 or by the time the crappy new new ones came out, they had way more cool things to do than spend time with me).
Raiders of the Lost Ark
ET
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Goonies (bonus for us since it was filmed in Oregon)
Top Gun
Stand By Me (might be my oldest's favorite movie)
Airplane
Vacation and Christmas Vacation - skipped the Euro one, meh
Naked Gun
Summer Rental
Uncle Buck
Splash

Ones that were't winners, for various reasons:
Jerry Maguire - thought my sports fanatic son would love this; COMPLETELY forgot about the sex scene with Travolta's wife where she screams at him to NEVER STOP BOINKING HER.  That was a tad uncomfortable.
Good Will Hunting - I think they were too young for this one; neither one knew what to say when it was over.
Animal House - One scene in particular forced me to turn it off.....:oldunsure:
Dead Poet's Society - Apparently this had a much bigger impression on me than it did on them.

I'll try to think of more.

my all time, most favoriteist, best possible movie experience was at a drive in movie theater in 1995.  The the drive in played double features and we went to see Clueless just after it was released.  I still was not quite old enough to legally drink at that point, but that did not stop us, in fact, there were a few other ways to get banged up that night that added to the overall experience.  Another awesome piece to the awesome puzzle that night was Dave's father's conversion van: that thing was lush, and was not returned in great condition... but I digress.  None of us had ever heard of the second movie that was played that night, but Braveheart is now near the top spot of each and every of our personal Favorite Movies Ever list as a result of that night.  To this day I have a hard time not yelling "FREEDOOOOOM" at the top of my lungs during inspirational parts of other movies - I know I am not the only one of my friends who do that (P.S. My kids love it, but my wife hates it).

So.... that being said, I think you have to add Clueless and Braveheart to your list.  Put an asterisk next to them and tell her that mushrooms may make the more enjoyable.

Saw this, came in to put one movie.

The Princess Bride. (Now see it on your list)

I will have to read the thread further. There are tons. I am biased because I graduated HS in 1988, and had 2 kids in 2002 and 2004, so most of that time my prime going to the movies era.

Strange Brew '83

Lock stock 2 smokin barrels ' 98
Strange Brew is one of my favorite all time movies but I watched it recently and I’m not sure it holds up. Sadly.

Also, she has seen some movies. I’ve seen a bunch mentioned she’s already seen. Again, don’t focus too much on my list. I’m not adding every movie listed here.

But I love seeing other people’s lists.
