The Slits - Cut (1979)

... more '79 goodness!

took these gals awhile to lay their cacaphonous mishmash of punky ska/reggae down - they were the first all female act to really hit on the scene, and the members all had various ties to the big guys in the rooms  ... lead singer Ari Up would become Rotten's stepdaughter, guitarist Viv Albertine had relationships with Sid and Mick Jones (Clash), and is rumored to have been the muse for "Train In Vain".

Albertine was the centerpiece here in forming the band ... she kicked around with various startups and failures ... then good pal Chrissy Hynde lit a real fire under her ###, and off she went to form the Slits.

the footage of their early live gigs is brutal ... they were a pure noise punk extravaganza - part shtick, part lack of polish - but they clicked with the fans, and became a staple on the circuits, supporting the Clash most often ... Strumner really believed in the gals, he just thought they needed to constantly play live to better hone their skills.

by the time they got into the studio for this debut, drummer Palmolive had left ... Siouxsie's drummer (and future husband) Budgie provided the majority of the album's percussion.

it's such an influential and groundbreaking work ... the great D.I.Y. ethos meshed with the powerful woman's point of view made for a landmark release which shaped many who followed.

So Tough  -  for Sid

Typical Girls (track begins at 1:15 mark in this vid)
I thought the muse for Train in Vain was Paloma McLardy (Palmolive).

Typical Girls is so freakin' good. I'll need to give the rest of it a try.

I'm not a fan of Fogerty's extended guitar jams.  He's best when pumping out four minutes of Rock 'n Roll.

Willy and Cosmo's have so many familiar songs on them that have become a part of American culture.
Four minutes? That's enough time for at least 2 of his songs.

well - I thought I was gonna have to boil the chicken-apple sausages before I grilled them ...but no, they are pre-cooked

so I'm back

here's where we are (note KP said to skip him, he's at dinner)

26.18 - Dust - Screaming Trees (1996)

Better than your favorite band from the 90s Seattle scene.

Witness

Dying Days
First heard them back in my Connecticut days on a left of the dial station.  A couple of years later I'm browsing a CD in Texas and I pick up Screaming Trees CD (I won't won't say the name, but it was the first album where they really latched onto the Screaming Trees sound. Played the #### out of it.

Also, there's another band I heard on the same station. I remember loving the sound, but was never able to track down a recording.  Anyone recall a band named Paisley Jungle?  There's just a whiff of them on the Internet.  Here's a cover of Eno's Baby's on Fire, crisp and tight.

I will do this if you agree to give Chris Owens a couple of bucks if you see him on the street.
I remember seeing one of his posts and trying to figure out which corner he was standing on.  It was South of Market if I recall correctly.

Your selections are cool.  I just wanted to use the sentence vomit is my jam.

I don't even know what pick I'm on.

25? ... Fela Kuti and Afrika 70- Zombie

Zombie

like the dancehall album, duck dance vs china town, this is a one track per side album. think I got it around the same time... probably also turned on to it by Prince, my ghanaian mate. I know he mentioned the politics, but I just stuck with the groove here... will need to go back and see what it was all about (helped collapse the government?).

The Black Keys - Gold on the Ceiling - I used to love these guys.  Mental note to listen to them again.

Cracker - Another Song About the Rain - Cracker has some great anthems. Lowery always play NYE in SF which seems a long way off right now.

Phoenix - Armistice - Another one like the Black Keys that fell off my radar during the endless search for the next Phoenix or Black Keys.  This song has a bit of Talking Heads to it.

Captive of the Sun - Parquet Courts - Never really got into them but liked that song that sounded like Elvis Costello.  This wasn't it.

Black Crowes - My Morning Song - Love this. So groovy.

Terrapin Station cover - Sixteen minutes. Sorry gang this was mine but what's a Grateful Dead tribute if you won't go on for a while. But yeah this is way cool if you hang around for the percussion and strings stuff in minute 12 or 13.

Tom Waits Eggs & Sausage - If I had to make a call, I'd take his Island records over the eariler ones on Warner Bros.

Janis Joplin / Live in Concert 1968-70

Summertime

Down on Me
I took Summertime as a song in the Great Works draft- and IIRC, used this version by Janis. I love her- but never ever listen to her.

Round 26 Singles - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (1992)

This movie was decent, but paled in comparison to the excellent soundtrack which heavily features artists from the Seattle grunge scene as well as old-timer Seattle rockers Jimi and the Wilson sisters.

Seasons - Chris Cornell

State of Love and Trust - Pearl Jam
my favorite PJ song.

like my favorite peewee herman quote "your mind plays tricks on you... you play tricks back!", I love the line in here "and I listen, for the voice inside my head... nothing- I'll do this one myself"

I don't even know what pick I'm on.

I considered Fela too~! "Zombie", specifically!

Ended up not having him on my list 'cause the best way to do it would be with a compilation, given the nature of his releases, but Zombie is my JAM. Seriously, so ####### good - playlist flow be damned. :lmao:

He's definitely an artist best explored by compilation.  A lot of Fela's albums are a side long jam with the instrumental version on the b-side.

skip me.  Trying to watch Wicked Tuna with my daughter.  Thanks!

And I got the Disco Biscuits couch tour stream on in a bit.

wait ...am I going crazy?  Didn't you pick "Fly Like An Eagle"?

I did a ton of work earlier today (and dicked around on the board whenever I got a chance for a break) to get ready for our drive by graduation tomorrow but my wife went back up to her parents lake house for the night so I am hoping there are shenanigans here tonight
